When you look at our daily routines, it’s generally pretty easy to find ways to lessen the impact on our environment and now is a great time to start.

Eliminate single serving items: Bottled beverages require lots of packaging, energy and air and water pollution just to get that liquid to your mouth. Avoid single-serving items and bring a coffee mug and water bottle wherever you go.

Make your home chemical-free: There are nearly 80,000 chemicals in conventional cleaning products. Most end up down the drain or in our bodies. Use green cleansers, providing safer alternatives.

Get out of your car: Consider biking or walking to the grocery store, to work, and shop locally.

Eat local and organic: Purchase meat, fruit, veggies, and grains from your local farms and farmers’ markets, or choose local food at supermarkets. This supports local farmers and

lessens transportation energy. Get really local and start a vegetable garden!

Get down to earth: Visit a farm or hike through a national or state park. Nothing inspires like a little dirt and nature.

So make some changes and go green in your daily life!

This will be the third time the name Royal Princess has been given to a Princess ship.

Debuting in spring of 2013, the new 141,000-ton, 3,600-passenger Royal Princess is the first of two new-generation ships for Princess which are being built by Fincantieri at their Monfalcone, Italy shipyard.

A new design element is an over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed enclosed walkway on the ship’s starboard side extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel. From here passengers can enjoy dramatic views, including to the sea 128 feet below. On the ship’s port side, passengers will find a similarly-unique cantilevered SeaView bar, featuring cocktails with unbeatable vistas.

Also, on her top decks, Royal Princess will feature a new adults-only pool surrounded by seven plush private cabanas that appear to be floating on the water. Two additional pools will flank a tropical island that will offer pool seating by day, and by night will become an outdoor dance club, complete with a dazzling water and light show. Princess’ signature adults-only haven, The Sanctuary, will be expanded both in size and amenities. The popular poolside theater, Movies Under the Stars, will play a starring role mid-ship with an expanded size and high-definition viewing.

All outside staterooms on Royal Princess will have balconies, which means that 80 percent of the ship’s staterooms will include this desirable feature.

The Body-Mouth ConnectionThere has been a growing interest over the past 20 years in the possible connections between the dental health in general and periodontal diseases, in particular on the overall health of the body. Most of us are now well aware of new research studies that implicate periodontal diseases as a possible risk for cardiovascular diseases, poor blood glucose control, adverse pregnancy outcomes, lung diseases and gastrointestinal diseases to name just a few examples.

It is important to remember the relationship of oral health to overall human health is not a one way street. On the other hand, overall human health, systemic conditions and medications may also have a huge influence on the incidence, severity and the progress of gum and periodontal diseases.

It is interesting to note that the oral cavity and the gum tissues that support the teeth experience an “early warning system” for changes which happen in the general health condition of the body. The mouth is exposed to a greater variety and number of bacteria, fungi and viruses than any other part of the body and this requires a completely well functioning host protective system. Any problems with one or more of the immune system can lead to inflammatory destructive changes in the oral cavity and an overgrowth of the bacteria, fungi or viruses in the mouth. For example, diseases which impair the body’s protective system, like leukemia and lymphomas have an increased amount of bone loss around the teeth. Similar changes are seen in patients with Down’s syndrome. Furthermore, there is an extensive range of mucocutaneous diseases like lichen planus, pemphigus and lupus which show extensive, early changes in the gum tissue. Certain cancers can metastasize in the gum tissue or even originate in the gum tissue. HIV associated infections like necrotizing gingivitis or Candida infections are usually early indicators of the body’s declining immune status.

Certain medications like dilantin for seizures, cyclosporine to prevent transplant rejection, or certain medications to treat blood pressure or heart arrhythmias also can lead to inflammatory and or gingival enlargement of the gum tissues.

These are just a few of the many examples of how important it is to visit the dentist regularly to detect any changes in the mouth, teeth and the gums, as it could be the first indication of an underlying systemic condition or disease which could be diagnosed by the dentist at a earlier stage, and it could help to get early and appropriate treatment.

Once again seeing a need to aid and assist our current real estate market, the California Housing Finance Agency, otherwise known as CalHFA, has completely revamped their home loan programs. According to Steve Spears, acting Director for the California Housing Finance Agency, “While the financial market turmoil continues and California faces unique challenges economically, there is perhaps no more important time for our agency to work on behalf of families statewide.” This is an agency that puts its money where its mouth is: Since the agency’s creation in 1975, CalHFA has helped over 150,000 California families realize their dream of homeownership by using over $18 billion in non-taxpayer funds to secure low rate fixed mortgages, as well as offer down payment assistance programs.

Their latest effort to help “first time buyers” – those who have not claimed any mortgage interest on their tax returns in the last three years – comes in the form of an AMAZING down payment assistance program. And although

the guidelines are tighter, and more restrictive than before, the payoff is truly worth it…California is willing to cover 99% of a buyer’s down-payment. In other words those who qualify for the state’s program will only have to put 1% of their own money towards their down-payment. If you’re buying a home for $200,000 instead of bringing in the minimum FHA down payment of 3.5%, or $6,500, you’ll only need to bring in 1%, or $2,000!

Packing Tips to Get You MovingPacking is one of those dreaded but necessary chores of moving, but it can be a manageable task by starting early, having a plan and not waiting until the last minute. Moving is stressful enough without running out of time. Try to give yourself at six weeks, which gives you enough time to pack a few boxes each day. Take a rough inventory of your items to determine how many packing boxes you will need. As a rule of thumb, use small boxes for small, heavy items such as books and canned goods; medium-size for bulkier, not so heavy items like linens and pots; and reserve larger boxes for very bulky, lightweight items.

Obtain boxes from a u-haul dealer, a local storage facility or home improvement store. To cut expenses you may get boxes from a fast food chain, supermarket and liquor stores. Also, consider investing in specialty boxes, such as wardrobe and mirror/painting cartons. Besides boxes, make sure you have marking pens, packing peanuts or bubble wrap, strong 2-inch wide packing

tape, and unprinted newspaper. The ink from printed newspaper can rub off onto your individual items.

Pack strategically. Plan out how you will pack up your belongings. Decide what needs to be packed first, such as seldom used and out-of-season items. Then, work your way up to everyday items, like dishes.

Decide what you will need to access as soon as you arrive at your destination. Write “Open First” on these boxes and load them onto the truck last or put them in your car. You also should pack a box with essentials for your first few nights and keep them with you, such as prescription medicine, toiletries, a telephone, a change of clothing, towels, toilet paper and bed linens.

Make sure to protect your belongings. You’ll want to make sure that your belongings get from Point A to Point B in one piece. To avoid damage, follow these packing techniques. Before packing your computer, back up your data on either an online service such as Carbonite.com or a portable hard drive. If possible, pack the computer in its original boxes and packaging. If you no longer have them, use a box with shock resistant insulation or create padding at the bottom and all around the sides.

Artwork and mirrors: Wrap all pieces individually with bubble wrap or cardboard. For artwork framed behind glass or mirrors, tape an “X” across the mirror to keep pieces in places in case it should break. Place each piece in its own flat, fitted box and fill in any space with crumpled newspaper.

Miscellaneous

• Avoid damage from leakage by packing your liquids (including medicine) in leak proof containers.

• Keep box weights to 50 lbs. or less.

• Use masking tape to secure lids to jars and bottles; hold down moveable parts; and affix nuts, bolts, screws or nails to associated items.

All that’s needed is a small hammer and a nail punch to remove and replace the hinge pins and a six-inch crescent wrench to bend the hinge. We call this re-forming.

Best of all, you can leave the door in place in the opening while you make the adjustment.

Remember: the fix we recommend here is for minor adjustments of up to about an eighth of an inch. A house that has settled to the point where the door will close only halfway is a different story and another column.

First, let’s consider a door that’s rubbing at the top on the knob side. Simple geometry allows us three alternatives to make the repair. All you need to do is to use one of the following techniques to increase the distance between the door and frame at the top: 1) move the bottom of the door closer to the frame at the hinge side. 2) move the top of the door away from the frame at the hinge side. 3) a combination of 1 and 2.

The method you select will depend on the amount of space that you have to work with between the door and the frame at both the hinge and knob sides.

Once a method has been selected, the next step will be to close the door and pop the hinge pin from the hinge you have decided to adjust. To move the door closer to the frame, knuckles on the hinge on the frame will have to be bent toward the frame. Either that or the hinge on the door must be bent away from the frame. Doing the reverse to either hinge will move the door away from the frame.

want it to bend. Each knuckle will have to be re-formed separately. Modern hinges are lightweight and relatively easy to bend, so a lot of pressure shouldn’t be necessary.

Older hinges are typically more rigid and may have to be removed, placed in a vice and then re-formed.

When closing the gap between the door and the frame, be careful not to over-bend the hinge. Doing so may bring the door too close to the frame and make the door difficult to close.

The same technique can be used when the knob side of the door is rubbing the frame. When adjusting for this problem, remember to bend the hinge(s) so that you don’t cause the door to rub at the top.
