Messer. Gases for Life.
Industrial gases play an important role in everyday
matters. It is impossible to imagine doing without
them in most aspects of our lives because in
many industrial production processes gases are
as important as water and electricity. They are
visible as fizzing bubbles in drinks – but in many
products they are hidden. Potato chips packed
under a controlled atmosphere, xenon headlights
and krypton torches show them clearly – but gases
are also used, for instance, in producing paper, ice
cream, wind turbines, cars and airbags, tiles and
ceramics, and water standpipes.
There you will learn how nitrogen cools concrete,
endowing it with greater stability, how liquid
carbon dioxide makes foam materials even more
comfortable, and why gases in lamps help them
operate longer, how vehicles are economically
welded with shielding gases and how the quality
of baking trays can be improved by proper com-
pounding of shielding gases. But applications such
as the natural treatment of potable water with
oxygen or the recycling of plastics using cryogenic
nitrogen also show how important gases are for
our lives.
Would you like to find out more about
the variety and uses of gases in our daily
lives? Then visit our new website at

Messer is one of the leading industrial gas
companies, and is active in over 30 countries
in Europe and Asia, as well as Peru and Algeria
with over 60 operating companies. The inter-
national activities are managed from Frankfurt
am Main, whilst management of core technical
functions – logistics, engineering, production
and application technology – is undertaken
from Krefeld.
From acetylene to xenon, the Messer Group has
one of the most diverse product portfolios on the
market – the company produces industrial gases
such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide,
hydrogen, helium, shielding gases for welding,
specialty gases, medical gases and many different
gas mixtures.
The Messer Group has state-of-the-art research
and competence centres in which it develops
applied technologies for the use of gases in almost
every sector of industry, in food technology,
medicine as well as research and science.

Our program„for a successful atmosphere”
From acetylene to xenon, the Messer Group offers
you much more than gases which meet your
needs. Our expertise in application technology
is both comprehensive and specialised, and
therefore provides the key to the optimisation
of processes in terms of quality, economy and
innovation.
Your company will profit as a result, no matter
what sector you work in: whether transport, food,
chemical, petrochemical, metallurgy, environmen-
tal technology, electronics, medicine, industrial or
welding technology.
The same applies to the various delivery methods:
from cylinders to road or rail tankers through to
pipelines or on-site facilities. Together, we will
find the solution that best fits your individual gas
requirements.
Whether liquefied or gaseous, we will supply the
gas products you need in their exact volume and
quality.
Of course, our portfolio also includes the ideal
hardware for using our products in the most
effective way.
Let our expertise make your company more
successful!

Purification of airImpurities such as water vapour and
carbon dioxide are then removed from the air
in a so-called molecular sieve.
Cooling of airBecause the gases which make up air
only liquefy at very low temperatures, the purified
air is cooled to approx. -175 °C in the main heat
exchanger. The cooling is achieved by means
Separating air to produce gases.
And what is air separation?Air can be separated into its components by
means of distillation in special units. So-called
air separation plants employ a thermal process
known as cryogenic rectification to separate the
individual components from one another in order
to produce high-purity nitrogen, oxygen and
argon in liquid and gaseous form.
What is air?Air is a mixture of gases, consisting primarily
of nitrogen (78 %), oxygen (21 %) and the
inert gas argon (0.9 %). The remaining 0.1 %
is made up mostly of carbon dioxide and the
inert gases neon, helium, krypton and xenon.
Compression of airAmbient air is drawn in, filtered and
compressed to approx. 6 bar by a compressor.
Precooling of airTo separate air into its components,
it must first be liquefied at an extremely low
temperature. As a first step, the compressed
air is precooled with chilled water.
Oxygen Nitrogen Argon
8
of internal heat exchange, in which the
flows of cold gas generated during the
process cool the compressed air. By
expansion the compressed air is cooled
further down, whereby it undergoes
partial liquefaction. Now the air is ready
for the separating column, where the
actual separation takes place.
Separation of airSeparation of air into pure oxygen
and pure nitrogen is performed in two
columns, the medium-pressure and the
lowpressure columns. The difference in
boiling temperature of the constituents
is exploited for the separation process.
Oxygen becomes a liquid at -183 °C
and nitrogen at -196 °C. The continuous
evaporation and condensation brought
about by the intense exchange of heat
and material between the rising vapour
and the descending liquid produces pure
nitrogen at the top of the low-pressure
column and pure oxygen at the bottom.
Argon is separated in additional columns
and involves some extra steps in the
process.
Withdrawal and storageGaseous oxygen and nitrogen are fed
into pipelines for transport to users,
e.g. steelworks. In liquid form, oxygen,
nitrogen and argon are stored in tanks
and transported to customers by tanker lorries.

Pipeline gases
In integrated industrial areas with a large number
of bulk customers, for example in steel production
or in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry,
gases such as oxygen or nitrogen can be supplied
centrally via a system of pipelines engineered
andmanaged by Messer.
On-site
If it is not possible to connect a bulk customer to
a pipeline system, a production unit will be built
on-site, which in many cases is operated remotely.

Gases in road tankers and storage tanks
The most economically effective way to supply
“medium” volumes is to transport and store them
as cryogenic liquid and compressed gases in road
tankers. We provide our products in insulated

Messer Belgium has been active in practically every sector for
more than 100 years – in cylinder gases as well as in the supply
of liquid gases. At its headquarters in Zwijndrecht, the company
operates a state-of-the-art cylinder filling plant for industrial
and specialty gases. Messer Belgium supports its customers
in the handling of their cylinder gases and provides them with
industry-specific gas applications. These services extend to total
gas management, which includes picking up the cylinders and
maintaining the gas facilities on-site. The company’s many years
of expertise goes hand in hand with a wide range of products
and comprehensive services. In the medical sector in particular,
Messer in Belgium has made a name for itself with its high
safety and quality standards.
Through its bECO2 joint venture, Messer Belgium has secured
a good position in the CO2 market. With the CO2 plant in
Zwijndrecht, approx. 130 kilotons of CO2 a year can be
produced, purified and liquefied from ambient air and then
supplied to customers, including those in the food and
beverage industry.

Messer Bulgaria, based in Sofia and Vratza, is a leader in the
Bulgarian gas market. Apart from its domestic business, the
company also serves customers in neighbouring countries. Over
2,000 tons of liquefied gas and around 20,000 gas cylinders are
delivered to customers every month. The whole subsidiary is
certified according to ISO 9001:2000.
The employees play a significant role in achieving these and
all other aims set by Messer Bulgaria. This is due to the high
European working standards as well as their familiarity with the
special features of the Bulgarian market. Messer Bulgaria was

With an annual growth of 15 per cent, China is the fastest
growing market for industrial gases. As a pioneer gas supplier
in China, Messer has had a presence in the country since
1994. So far it has set up 17 operational companies in three
core regions with leading positions primarily in Hunan, Yunnan
and Sichuan, as well as in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong.
Messer China has invested in more than 30 air separation units
throughout the country in order to supply steelworks and other
industrial sectors with the required industrial gases.
In 2013, Messer China started its business diversification
strategy. Currently, its major focus is on expanding the liquid
gases marketing share as well as the cylinder business in order
to provide a better supply to existing and new customers. In
addition, Messer China is also strategically stepping into new
business segments by setting up one electronic specialty gases
plant, three CO2 recovery plants and one krypton/xenon recovery
plant.
