Enabling the progression and adoption of the connected and autonomous vehicles’ ecosystem

2-4 May 2017 Rydges North Sydney l Australia

Official Minister’s Welcome

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to Sydney for the Future Vehicles conference.

Transport is a technology business, and we need to create an environment where innovation on our roads and transport networks is allowed to flourish. I have long said technology is key to improving travel for all of us, by making it safer, quicker and more convenient.

Our Smart Innovation Centre, which the NSW Government announced in May 2016 is a technology hub that will lead research and development into new technologies including driverless cars.

We need to enable connected and automated vehicle platforms and our government, along with our federal and state counterparts, is investigating the legislative requirements needed to make trials for driverless cars a reality as soon as possible.

We are spending a record $73 billion in infrastructure across NSW, but to make it the best it can be, it is important emerging technologies align with current and future projects.

I am proud that our government is pioneering new transport models that we expect will make increasing use of connected and automated vehicles to provide convenient and affordable services to customers.

Transport for NSW is currently leading the world with the largest testbed of connected technology in heavy vehicles in the southern hemisphere, operating on 2300 km of road in the Illawarra.

This innovative technology has significant safety benefits by alerting drivers about potential head-on and side-on collisions, upcoming red lights, and speed limits.

It is also the first step to getting fully automated vehicles on the road.

Through the Premier’s Innovation Initiative on congestion, Transport for NSW is working with an Australian technology company, Cohda Wireless, to test on-road priority for connected freight vehicles.

These trucks will communicate with traffic signals on three major freight corridors to reduce the number of times the trucks stop at traffic lights and smooth overall traffic flow.

These programs also support the directions of TfNSW’s Future Transport Technology Roadmap, which includes the support of automated and connected technology as one of its five key strategies.

NSW will continue to develop and strengthen partnerships with industry, research partners and other government agencies to make sure safe and reliable automated vehicles are part of our transport future.

Andrew Constance NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure
