The world oil refining industry is a continually changingbusiness. This presents an ever-evolving challenge to therefiner and requires the ability to be flexible, adaptable andaware of the future directions and changes the industry willtake. At Johnson Matthey Catalysts, we work closely with ourcustomers in order to ensure that they succeed. Throughour refineries business, we offer a range of specialized highperformance catalysts and process technologies that enableour customers to meet the demands they face today andprepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

Product demand

Economic growth leads to an increased demand fortransportation fuels, especially in the fastest growingeconomies of the world such as India, China and Russia. Inadapting to these changes, the removal of undesiredimpurities such as sulphur, mercury and chlorides from hydrocarbon streams is becoming increasingly important to refiners. PURASPECJM™ absorbents and process technologies have been designed specifically for these applications in both gas and liquid duties. The HYTREATJM™ range of hydroprocessing catalysts provides a proven range of products for a broad range of HDS and HDN duties.

Crude supply demographics

Whilst demand is growing, crude supply has become aneven more important factor for the industry. As some of themore desirable crudes shorten in supply, the world crudeslate has become heavier and sourer which requires largervolumes of hydrogen for use in hydroprocessing duties.KATALCOJM™ catalysts for use in on-purpose hydrogenmanufacture ensure an efficient and reliable hydrogenfeedstock to the refinery.

Environment

Demand growth, shifting usage patterns and worseningcrude slate have large knock-on effects on the environment.Indeed, health and environmental issues have promptedlegislation in developed economies, which has forced theproduction of ever-cleaner fuels. Traditionally the primefocus of refiners has been the sulphur content of fuelproducts but increasing attention is being paid to theconcentration of heavy metals in product streams fromrefineries. Mercury contamination is a particular concernand PURASPECJM technology provides a simple and effective means of removing mercury contamination from liquid hydrocarbon streams.

The refining industry – a moving target

Manpower

Whilst maintaining the flexibility and adaptability to cope withthese changes in demand, supply and environmentalconcerns most refiners are achieving this with a dwindlingworkforce. Many tasks have been automated, sub-contractedor outsourced leading to a general decline in the number oftechnical personnel within the refinery. Johnson Matthey isable to supplement the core skills within the refinery bysupplying two unique services. First, TRACERCO™ servicesfrom Johnson Matthey offers the refiner specializeddiagnostic and measurement techniques for detailedinvestigation of operating problems within the core refineryunits. Second, KATALCOJM PERFORMANCE offers a uniquerange of hydrogen related services that range from processoptimization to asset improvement.

KATALCOJM catalysts from Johnson Matthey are used foron-purpose hydrogen production via the steam reformingprocess. As cost pressures on refineries rise, alternativefeedstocks for hydrogen production are becomingincreasingly important. The KATALCOJM range ofQUADRALOBE™ steam reforming products contains theleading catalysts in this market, which allow hydrogenproduction from a wide range of feedstocks. Furthermore,KATALCOJM water-gas shift catalysts are proven to provide areliable, cost effective and durable source of hydrogen, enabling operators to maximize hydrogen production fromhydrocarbon steam reforming plants.

PURASPECJM absorbents and process technologies provideoil refiners with a simple and effective means of removingundesired impurities from hydrocarbon streams. Forexample, PURASPECJM technology is widely applied toremove chloride contamination from the product streamsfrom catalytic reformer units, sulphur contamination fromliquid hydrocarbon streams and mercury contamination from naphtha streams.

INTERCATJM is the leading manufacturer of speciality additives and addition systems used in the refinery’s Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) Unit. With over 70% of the worldwide market share of FCC additives and 75% market share of additive addition systems we are clearly at the forefront of the industry. Today’s challenging market and the shortage of rare earth metals creates new pressures for refiners. The range of INTERCATJM innovative SOx emissioncontrol additives and our team’s rapid response to refinery requirements allow refineries to realize the benefits of higher sulphur crudes and quickly changing economics.
