Welcome from ACE and EFCA

I am delighted to welcome you to the European CEO Conference 2019 for what promises to be an interesting and engaging programme. We meet at a time of political upheaval both here in the UK and around the world with the fallout from the Brexit referendum and the election of the Trump administration causing considerable uncertainty in the world’s two largest markets. Alongside these challenges the rise of a more politically assertive China combined with a slowdown in the Chinese market has added further instability to the global economy. It’s now more important than ever that CEO’s from across Europe’s engineering consultancies meet to discuss the issues that affect our industry and collaborate to meet our mutual goals, hence the new approach to this conference in partnership with EFCA.

The three themes of this year’s conference are the global challenges we face, our clients’ and societies’ changing expectations of our industry and how we can learn together and respond to these challenges and expectations. Our conference will examine our global challenges and client expectations in day one with day two reserved for an examination of how we can better collaborate with each other to ensure a more sustainable and profitable industry. I look forward to meeting you all and hearing your views on these key themes.

Thank you for attending and I hope that you enjoy this year’s conference.

The European Federation of Consulting Engineering Associations, EFCA, is delighted to join with ACE in welcoming you to the European CEO Conference. EFCA represents members across 28 European counties, employing one million staff. At a time when unprecedented political uncertainty across Europe threatens to polarise our communities, segregate our industry and create barriers to trade, ACE and EFCA have created a unique forum for CEOs of engineering consultancies. This networking event provides an unrivalled opportunity for key decision makers from all over Europe to come together to consider, contemplate and collaborate on matters of mutual interest and concern.

An insightful range of speakers has been assembled to examine the impact of global economic, political and climate developments on the future of our industry, allowing us to position our companies to face the resulting challenges.

8.45 - 08.50Welcome and opening statement Kevin Rudden, President, EFCARecap on output of day one and set the agenda for day two programme

8.50 - 10.15The future for delivery of complex services - disrupt or be disrupted• A vision for the future of the delivery of services• New business models for integrating complex services• Disruptors and meeting the common challenges facing companies operating in the engineering and construction

sector • Digital transformation

Session chair: Professor Roger Flanagan, Professor of Construction Management, University of Reading

Guest speaker: Benoît Chauvin, EIC Board Member, COLAS

Panellists:• Peter Reekie, Chief Executive, Scottish Futures Trust• Hannah Vickers, Chief Executive Officer, ACE

The session will focus on the future for the delivery of complex services. Digitalisation is breaking down the barriers between consulting services and site production. New technologies are creating opportunities for off-site manufacturing. The key is design and production integration. How can consultants respond to the challenges? Is there a need for a new dialogue between design and production teams? What are the big challenges for European production teams? How can digital delivery improve profitability, productivity, speed of delivery, and quality? Will Chinese companies be a disruptor or an enabler in the future?

10.15 - 11.15Best practice case studiesThis session includes cases studies from companies that have been identified as delivering good practice in each of the Future of Consultancy’s three areas of opportunity.

11.45 – 12.05Data and artificial intelligence Advancing BIM through digital twins

Digital twins are set to take centre stage—advancing rapidly beyond building information modelling and enabling asset‐centric organizations to converge their engineering, operational, and information technologies for immersive visualization and analytics visibility. Digital twins are an opportunity for CEOs, CIOs, CTOs, and CDOs to add new business value to their firms. They also are an opportunity for engineering firms to extend business value to their clients beyond project delivery to asset performance over the lifecycle. What skills, competencies, IT architectures, collaboration, culture and mindset changes are required to support a successful introduction of digital twins? Digital readiness implies a minimum threshold of digital maturity in resources, systems, and organization upon which digital initiatives can be executed, aligned with business strategy.
