Today, we have an even bigger challenge: climate change
▪ Annual C02 emissions will increase from 48 gigatonnes today to 64 gigatonnes in 20301
▪ Global temperature will increase between 1.7 to 4.4 degrees in 21002
▪ 200 – 2000 species extinct each year 3
▪ Annual deforestation rate4 is 0.18%, which corresponds to ~ 5 million hectares or roughly the size of Costa Rica
▪ Annual CO2 emissions from forests are three gigatonnes
– 2/3 comes from above ground emissions5
– 1/3 from peat decomposition6
▪ Annual economic losses from deforestation and damage to forests alone is estimated at between $2 trillion and $4.5 trillion globally7

We know Indonesia can play a role in reducing carbon emissions
Over 2 Gt CO2e emitted in 2005
Nearly 80% from land sector
Indonesia has 3rd largest tropical forest
With very rich biodiversity and people living within......

“We are devising a policy … that will reduce our emissions by 26 percent by 2020 from BAU (Business As Usual). With international support… we can reduce emissions by as much as 41 percent”
“We will change the status of our forest from that of a net emitter sector to a net sink sector by 2030”
– President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
We are committed to GHG reduction: our president has made official declarations

▪ Design of REDD+ agency
▪ Setup of funding instrument
▪ Design MRV framework
▪ Select pilot province
▪ Design scope of moratorium
▪ Funding instrument operational
▪ Tier 2 MRV system operational
▪ Launch first (2011) and second (2012) provincial pilot programs
▪ Enforce 2 year suspension of new concessions for natural forest and peat
