Loveden Festival Singers in Fine
Voice at St Vincent’s
The Loveden Festival Singers performed
their final concert of the summer at St
Vincent’s church on 17th July. Their
repertoire was varied and included pieces
by Handel, Mendelssohn and Rutter,
medleys from Oklahoma and My Fair
Lady. In addition we heard three Negro
spiritual songs,. Three of their soloists
sang I’ll Never Find Another You,
Morningtown Ride, Puff the Magic
Dragon, Summertime and Sometimes
When we Touch; something for everyone!
Delicious refreshments were provided by
members at the interval.
All were thanked by musical director,
Stuart Freshney for their hard work and in
particular Robbie Squire who performed
two excellent piano pieces. He empha-
sised how fortunate they were to have her
as their accompanist. He bade farewell to
Carolyn and Victor Snaith whose last
performance it
was and wished
them luck as
they leave
Caythorpe. He
concluded by
inviting anyone
who would like
to join the singers. They will be most wel-
come; their next rehearsal will be the start
of the Christmas music!
The evening ended
with a lovely
rendition of “When
Irish Eyes are
Smiling”, a
particular favourite
of mine as I was
born near Galway
and often sang this with my parents when
growing up.

Rural Dean of Loveden
Count your blessings!
At the time of writing we have been
having lovely weather, lots of sunshine and
blue skies, which always makes people
more cheerful and positive. So I thought I
would use this issue to tell a story which
encourages us to be thankful despite our
difficulties and challenges.
Some may know this old hymn but not the
story behind it, here is the first verse:
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to
say
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Refrain:
It is well, (it is well),
With my soul, (with my soul)
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
The words of this hymn were written by an
American lawyer, Horatio Spafford,
following a very difficult period in his life.
In 1871 the Great Chicago Fire brought
financial ruin to him as he had invested in
a lot of property in the particular area of
Chicago that was damaged by the fire.
Then in 1873 he was further affected by
the economic downturn.
That same year he and his family were due
to travel to Europe together but he changed
his plans at the last minute and sent them
on ahead of him because he needed to sort
out some business problems resulting from
the Great Chicago fire.
While his family were crossing the
Atlantic, their ship sank after a collision
with another vessel and Spafford’s four
daughters died, though his wife survived.
It was while travelling to meet his grieving
wife that he was inspired to write the
words of this hymn.
Whatever we may
be facing in the
months ahead I
pray that God
may show us even
the smallest thing
that we can be
grateful for.

LOVEDEN DEANERY - QUIET MORNINGS AT CAYTHORPE
Deanery quiet mornings give an opportunity to take some precious time out in a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. They usually comprise shared, guided reflection followed by personal quiet time, and are open to all.
Quiet Mornings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Sports Pavilion, Old Lincoln Road, Caythorpe, meeting for coffee at 9.45 am for a 10 am start. They usually conclude with a short service of Holy Communion and a shared lunch. Everyone is welcome.

Baking Bread at the WI
Our July meeting was held on a very warm summer evening made even warmer by the
ovens in the village hall kitchen being turned on to their highest setting. They were
shortly to be filled with twenty-two mini loaves of hand-made bread. The dough
instantly absorbs the heat and makes the temperature
drop, hence the need for a high oven temperature.
This was one of the top tips given to us by our guest
speaker Peter Welbourn (retired) of Navenby bakery
who made a washing up bowl (yes) full of bread dough
and whilst it “proved” he spoke amusingly about his
time as a baker and how much things changed over
those years, but the basic way to make bread has not
changed at all. He recommended that we made bread when we are feeling angry or
annoyed as the kneading process requires all of the air being “knocked” out of the
dough! We all took a delicious warm loaf home with us.
President, Janet Hoddell told us of the new project for the Associated Country Women
of the World for which we raise money each year. This year we are to assist needy
people in the Cameroon by “changing mentalities and empowering groups”. Pauline
Dorey, our treasurer, showed us the photograph of “Women in the Workplace” which
she entered in a competition at the Lincolnshire Show and came second; it depicted the
only woman currently working on the shop floor of a Lincoln engineering company.
The 13th August meeting is to be held in the garden of Cobblers Rise where we will
“Bring and Share” a picnic with host Ann Russell. We plan to start around 2pm and
finish at 4.30pm, please bring a chair and cutlery etc., as you would for a picnic. Any
garden sized games would be fun too, Jenga, quoits, dominoes, pick up sticks and the
like, if you have them to bring. In the event of rain we will use the village hall instead.

Congestion in Caythorpe
Sir - Recently John Scott, a lifelong
village resident, raised in News and Views
the subject of the Parish Council’s failure
to address the congestion in Caythorpe
High Street. As the longest-serving Parish
Councillor, I would like to inform
residents of the Council’s approach to the
views he has expressed.
The High Street evolved in the horse era
and now deals with a four-fold increase in
village size and with motor vehicles.
There are homes with no off-road parking,
a School, a Sure Start Centre and a
Playgroup totalling up to 30+ staff
members and their associated vehicles.
There are customers at the shop together
with users of the Village Hall. Now throw
into the mix the buses and delivery lorries
- this is the reality of the 2015 High Street.
Are yellow lines the answer with their
draconian fines for non-compliance?
Some years ago the Council and the
Highway Authority produced such a plan
to restrict parking. After some discussion,
this idea was shelved for the following
reasons:
Parking restrictions would result in the
displacement of large numbers of vehicles.
To where? Further up and down the High
Street, to Back Lane or to South Parade?
In school hours, a long line of vehicles
would stretch from Arnhem Drive to the
Waggon and Horses? There would be
nowhere for other vehicles to pass without
encroaching onto grass verges and

find difficulty parking near to their homes.
In addition the viability of our village shop
would be affected.
In 30 years the village has lost two
butchers, Askey’s Mini Market, Margaret
Richard’s Hairdressers and the Co-op.
The Post Office is currently up for sale.
Their may be an opportunity for this to
move to the Spar Stores.
It is, therefore, vital that the viability of
the shop is protected together with
consideration for the plight of residents
with no off-road parking.
Yellow lines would increase traffic speeds
with the associated safety implications.
The Parish Council has enlisted the
co-operation of the School, the Sure Start
Centre and the Village Hall urging their
employees, and visitors to park without
causing obstruction to the free flow of
traffic. All these organisations are co-
operative and fully aware of the problem.
There is a school staff car park with an
entrance into Back Lane. It was badly
designed as it only provides five parking
places. By removing the high kerb and the
grass within the fenced-off area, more
spaces could be provided without taking
any of the children’s play area. Possibly,
herring-bone parking places could be
created by the school’s perimeter fence.
However, Back Lane is a single width
road without pavement, footway or
lighting. In addition, could the staff be
expected to walk out onto Back Lane on
dark ,winter afternoons and evenings in
bad weather? Of course, there is also the
question of cost and who is going to pay.
Both the Council and the Highways
Authority have discussed the provision of
lay-bys to allow the children to be
dropped-off and collected.
The council contacted Stagecoach
requesting details of vehicles causing
obstructions to the No 1 bus route. They
suggested liaison with the police and both
PC Nick Smith and PSO Babs Mooney
have been informed.
The matter of parking on the High Street is
on the agenda (again) at the next Parish
Council Meeting on Wednesday 9th
September when all the issues will be
discussed and opinions given. Parishion-
ers are most welcome to attend.

Appeal for new committee members for
Caythorpe Preschool
Caythorpe Preschool needs new volunteers to take roles on the charity’s management
committee.
The busy Pre-School has been in operation since 1987 when it ran from the village hall
with just 4 members of staff.
Today it has its own dedicated premises attached to the school and employs 7 mem-
bers of staff and cares for 28 children.
Without an active committee Caythorpe Preschool will not be able to operate; we are
therefore appealing for members of the local community to join the team to ensure the
preschool continues to provide a valuable service to the families in Caythorpe and the
surrounding villages.
To be involved, you do not need to have young children. We need people who can
devote a minimum of 5 hours a month to attend meetings and carry out their duties. In
particular we need people with accounting, finance and HR skills and administrative
and/or fundraising experience.

The 1st Caythorpe Brownies
As we end our summer term the 1st Caythorpe Brownies have had a very full and
varied programme. A few examples of activities include completing the Water Safety
badge, finishing our Friends to Animal badge, church cleaning
and a trip to see Disney on Ice.
At the end of the term the Brownies performed their entertain-
ment evening for parents and leaders. As a treat on the final night
we took the Brownies bowling which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
In September we will have places available for new children to

Ramblings of the Old Rector
As the Hon. Chaplain of the Bomber Command Association, the 28th June saw me tak-
ing the annual Act of Remembrance at the Bomber Command Memorial in The Green
Park, London, as I have done every year since HM The Queen unveiled it on 28 June
2012.
Every year about 200 veterans of the bombing offensive against the Nazi regime return
with their families to remember their old comrades, and Joy and I greet them now as
old friends. Jim Dooley (of The Dooleys), who worked so hard with Robin Gibb (of the
Bee Gees) to raise the enormous sum of money required for the memorial, attends each
year. As does the architect, Liam O’Connor, and the sculptor, Philip Jackson. Their
age dictates that some of these frail
old men now find it difficult to pull
the skin off a rice pudding, but in their
youth they flew Lancaster and Halifax
aircraft through the flak-bursting skies
over the Ruhr and elsewhere in
occupied Europe. I am proud to be
their chaplain.
When I am not involved with young
people, either at Sir William Robert-
son Academy or with Air Cadets in
No.3 Welsh Wing, I spend much time
with the retired Air Force. The 8th
August will see me nearer home; I
shall be officiating at the dedication of
a headstone on the grave of a pilot who crashed on that day in, 1923, near Grantham
having taken off from RAF Grantham – later RAF Spitalgate.
Having survived the First World War as a soldier, receiving a commission in 1917,
Robin Jacques was promoted to the acting rank of Captain in 1919. Despite playing
centre-forward for the Army, he was transferred to the reserve when the Army ‘down-
sized’ in 1922. The following year he was awarded a Short Service Commission in the
RAF, in the rank of Flying Officer, and he signed for Fulham FC.
Sadly he never played for them, because while he was undergoing flying training at
RAF Grantham, with only 30 flying hours under his belt, his Avro 504K crashed near
Old Somerby ten minutes after taking off. His wife and children, a boy aged about four
and a little baby girl aged 18 months, lived at the Red Lion, Newton, on the A52.
They returned at once to London. The little girl, Hattie, who never knew her Dad, was
to become a famous actress.
Robin Jacques was buried in Grantham Cemetery, but his grave was never marked with
a headstone. That will be remedied on 8th August.

On behalf of the Church and Walk Group of Grantham U3A ( The University of the
Third Age) we were asked to arrange a morning visit to our local Churches.
We decided to visit the churches of Carlton
Scroop and Normanton-on-Cliffe and we asked

tour of the
lovely wild flower churchyard at Carlton
Scroop. It was a very successful morning,
enjoyed by everyone and we have received many

A Fun-filled evening with Cliff ‘n’ Chips
The Women’s Institute dull and boring! Absolutely not
and that can be confirmed by all of those in attendance on
27th June at our fund raising Fish and Chip supper.
What a surprising and fun filled evening we all had with
guests laughing, singing and dancing between the tables.
The evening was run by Andy Lloyd and his family (of
Island Truffles and Treats) from Horbury Bridge in West
Yorkshire. They came equipped with everything they
needed to feed and entertain us and began the evening
with a demonstration of how to make brandy and Belgian
chocolate truffles. Andy did this in his natural comedic
style and had us
all laughing out loud.
Once this was over, his team produced plates
of delicious and hot fish and chips which we
ate with gusto. Tables were cleared quickly
and Andy then came around to every table for
us to take an absolutely delicious chocolate
truffle as our dessert.

Whilst Andy “changed”, President, Janet Hoddell drew the raffle and thanked the
members and guests who had provided over twenty prizes for us. Then, the versatility
of this man, Andy, came to the fore; he had a fantastic singing voice with which we
were entertained with songs from the fifties and sixties as well as other classics.
Members couldn’t keep still with feet tapping and eventually took to the floor dancing
to the music. We then sat and rolled with laughter with his Bee Gee
impression complete with wig and
sunglasses.
Who would have thought that this
unusual combination of entertain-
ment would work? But work it did
and a fantastic evening was had by
all, I don’t think it will be the last
time we will see him either, so
watch this space!
Grateful thanks must go to mem-
bers who came in the morning to
set up the tables, table flowers and
also, to Carlton Scroop village hall for the loan of their water jugs and vases.

Sue’s Solutions - Home-made Jewellery Cleaner
1 tbsp salt 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tbsp washing up liquid
1 cup hot water 1 piece aluminium foil (enough to cover bottom of shallow bowl)
Pour the hot (not boiling) water into the foil covered bowl. Place the salt, soda and washing up
liquid on top and gently mix together making sure the salt and soda are dissolved.
Place the jewellery into the bowl making sure it is completely covered with the solution and
leave for 5-10 minutes, depending on how dirty it is.
Rinse in cold water thoroughly and dry completely with a soft cloth.
Discard the solution and make up a new batch next time.
According to wire-sculpture.com “this works well for gold filled, brass, nickel and sterling sil-
ver. I have cleaned jewellery with freshwater pearls, shell cameos and mother of pearl with no
problem”.

preparing work for the Club’s Exhibition

There are two demonstrations arranged
for later in the year and being given by
exceptionally fine artists. Haidee-Jo
Summers, whose subject will be “Portraits
in Oil”, and Ian Risley who will be
demonstrating “Landscape in Pastel”. Do
check out their web sites to see the quality
of the work they produce. Both of these
events are, like all our demonstrations and
workshops, held on a Saturday and open
to members and to visitors who are
always welcome.
The Club’s Thursday “Painting Morn-
ings” are continuing throughout the
summer in Carlton-le-Moorland Village
Hall between 10.00a.m. and 1.00p.m.
with members meeting up informally to
paint and draw.
Rather than wait until the exhibition or for

TRIPS to Clumber Park, Hunstanton, London and Frieston
Recently, the whole school have enjoyed several different trips,
including residential trips and a whole-school trip to Clumber Park.
Here is a summary of what we’ve been up to!
Clumber Park
The whole school went to visit
Clumber Park on the 14th of July.
We went for a treat for doing brilliant at collecting
our gold bars. Key Stage Two did orienteering
which involved reading a map and walking through
woods and searching for clues. Year five/six played
a game of cricket before everything started and the
teachers also joined in. Reception played in a woodland park and then happily made
dens in the woods. We also went in the walled kitchen garden and saw many differ-
ent plants and fruit and even saw talking rhubarb! We had lots of fun and enjoyed
the day out in the woods.
Hunstanton Y1/2 went to Hunstanton for two days and they went
to the sea life centre. They saw lots of different kind of
fish. After that they went to the seaside and paddled in
the sea. They stopped off at the fish and chip shop for
tea. Amazingly they slept in a room where there was
glass around them so when they slept they could look
up and see colourful fish and daring sharks.
London Year five and six went to Lon-
don. We went on the London
Eye, visited the Natural History
and Science museums, took a
boat cruise along the River
Thames and watched the Lion
King! At night we went to sleep in a Premier Inn
which was very exciting. We had a very busy two
days enjoying some of London’s best attractions.
Frieston
Year three and four went to Frieston. They did a scav-
enger hunt, a river investigation day, a blind-folded
obstacle course and had a campfire with roasted marsh-
mallows.
They slept in Frieston residential centre for two nights
and had a great action-packed trip!

SPORTS DAY
On Tuesday 23rd June, we had an awesome sports day. Miss
Beanland organised a new format for sports day this year to make
there less sitting around
waiting and more activities
and having fun. We had lots
of new events this year: the
speed bounce, the long jump, the sit down
throw, the long run and even Welly Wanging!
We still had the sack race, sprint and hurdles.
We had lots more activities.
We also had new sports day teams based on
the 5 Olympic Rings and the five continents –
Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Oceania.
The team that came third was Oceania, the team that came second was Asia and the
team that came first was Africa. At the end of an amazing day, we had a whole
school relay!

Caythorpe and District Garden Society
The summer social was held in the beautiful Fulbeck garden of two of our members.
The evening was cloudy, but warm and dry, so we all had a chance to walk round the
extensive garden and admire the well tended and often unusual plants featured.
Although not formally divided into ‘rooms’ the space is broken up by mature borders
containing trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, and winding paths lead the
visitor between the different areas. The beck runs through part of the garden, and the
damp soil supports a good selection of large ferns and other moisture lovers. Planted
pots, sculptures and topiary add to the interest of this much admired garden. We also
had an enjoyable buffet, with food brought by members and wine provided by the
society, to round off a perfect evening. Our grateful thanks to our hosts, and to the
members who organised the buffet.
The August meeting will be in Carlton Scroop village hall on Tuesday 11th August
at 7:30pm. Ian Cooke will speak on ‘So very versatile perennials’. Visitors (£3) will
be most welcome. Just come along.
Caythorpe Show
The show will be held on Saturday 22nd August in Caythorpe Village Hall. Anyone
may enter, and there are classes for garden produce, cookery, handicrafts and
photography. Schedules are available from the Spar Shop and the Post Office in
Caythorpe, Belton Garden Centre, Fulbeck Crafts and Leadenham Farm Shop.
Set up and judging take place in the morning, and doors open for viewing and cream
teas at 2 pm.

News from Sir William Robertson Academy
So many villagers have expressed delight that Sir William Robertson Academy,
Welbourn, known to us affectionately as “Will Rob”, has recently had a “Good”
Ofsted inspection, that I thought I would let you know what the inspectors said.
They were in the school for two whole days; they observed lessons, spoke with the
pupils and teachers, and went into every department. The Lead Inspector also had a
session with some of the governors, to ensure that we were well-informed about the
standard of teaching and learning throughout the Academy. They concluded that the
school was “Good” in every area, and bordering on “Outstanding” in some. The four
inspectors considered that the wide range of subjects taught captured students’ interests
and ensured they enjoyed all the
courses they follow. They thought
that the academy uses educational
visits to places like Berlin and
Castle Acre, as well as residential
trips, inter-house sporting
competitions and cultural visits to
the theatre, very effectively to
enhance students’ learning.
They saw for themselves that the
governors value good teaching and
monitor the quality of teaching, and
support the Head teacher in tack-
ling underperformance. They
agreed that governors manage the
Head teacher’s performance
closely, linking targets to the academy’s improvement plan. They noted that staff
targets are linked to students’ progress and good teaching. It will come as no surprise
to villagers that they found that the behaviour of students is good. They said the stu-
dents have positive attitudes to learning, take pride in their appearance and cooperate
well with adults. Furthermore, in class, students listen politely to teachers and to one
another; and engage with teachers’ questions and contribute sensible answers.
With regard to the sixth form they reported that the academy’s provision of good,
impartial careers advice helps our senior students to plan their futures, so that virtually
all students progress to higher education, employment or training. They reported that
the vast majority of students have high aspirations, and that an increasing proportion
goes on to study at Russell Group universities. Considering that this is only the end of
the third year of the sixth form’s existence, that is high praise indeed.
I must say that I always enjoy being in the Academy, whether it is with the teaching
staff or signing cheques in the finance department, but most of all when I meet and chat
with the pupils.

Parish Council News…..August 2015
Co-option to the Parish Council……I am pleased to be able to report that we have
filled the three vacancies and have co-opted Rachel Mountain, Karen Bailey and Mike
Budden; their contact details will be shown in the September edition. I would like to
thank the other four residents who took the time and trouble to put their names forward
for co-option.
Parish Council grants …..The meeting held on July 8th agreed that grants of £3,000
should be given to both the Village Hall and to the Playing Fields. This is in
recognition of the excellent way that both organisations are run and managed.
Parking on pavements…..Residents are reminded not to park their vehicles partially
or fully on footpaths and pavements. This causes considerable problems for those who
are partially sighted and in particular for one resident whose guide dog refuses to take
its owner pass such obstructions. This also causes problems for those with prams and
pushchairs.
Dog fouling …..This anti social behaviour continues to cause concern. We will be
distributing leaflets to all households shortly reminding dog owners of their responsi-
bilities and the fine of £75 that can be issued by an Authorised Officer for any one not
clearing up after their animal. In addition there will be contact details if residents wish
to report an incidence of dog fouling.
Grants for community projects…..The Parish Council sets aside a sum each year for
the making of grants to organisations where it can be demonstrated that a particular
project will be of benefit to the community. If you would like further details with
regard to this please do not hesitate to contact the Parish Clerk.

Caythorpe Cricket News
July has been another very busy month for all of Caythorpe's Cricket Teams, with some
superb Cricket being played at all age levels and with very favourable results!
Currently the Senior Xl are joint leaders of Division 2 of the Sills & Betteridge Lincoln
League and looking favourites for promotion. Boston were defeated by 62 runs.
Caythorpe batted first and progressed to 169 all out, with Luke Endley top-scoring with
41, followed by James King with 34. Boston were dismissed for 107 in just 23 overs.
Dan Pinfold had the most success with the ball, taking 5 wickets for 42 runs whilst
Nick White took 4 for 20.
We then collected full points without playing against North Scarle as they conceded
due to shortage of players.
The next match was a very low scoring affair, with Caythorpe, batting first, only scor-
ing 91 runs, Andy Wilson with 22 and Rob Pealing (29) being our only batsmen to
reach double figures. Feeling downhearted going out to field Caythorpe's spirits
quickly rose again thanks to some fantastic bowling by Luke Endley. Luke took 8
wickets for just 9 runs, the second best bowling performance ever in the Lincoln
League. Most of his victims were cleaned bowled, the stumps regularly cart-wheeling
out of the ground. Dan Pinfold picked up the other two wickets as Hartsholme scored
only 29 runs.
Caythorpe's Under 9's continued their winning ways, defeating Cherry Willingham and
Collingham, to remain joint leaders of their League. By the time this appears they will
have played Bracebridge Heath in a game that could decide the title. Two games have
been rained off, but we are trying to reschedule them. Most of the 25 players who have
been training on Friday nights have now played in a match, even those as young as
five and six, so the future of the Club looks assured! Eight girls are in this Group of
whom two, Lotte Wells and Andrea Kiddle, have progressed to play for Lincolnshire.
Several parents have stepped forward to assist and are waiting for the next available
ECB Coaching Courses to look after this Team as they move up the age groups.
Our Under 10's have played three matches, defeating Woodhall Spa but losing to Gran-
tham and Hartsholme in close-fought games. In each we were just 10 runs short of vic-
tory. This team is now looking quite confident about playing with a hard ball and some
are surely destined to progress to County level.
The Under 11's have played another 4 games and have won two, against Boston and
Grantham, but lost to Collingham and Sleaford. This age-group has had difficulty field-
ing 11 players at times due to other calls on the youngster's time. School trips, plays,
parent's evenings, Scout camps, all taking their toll. Fortunately the Managers could
draft in Under 10's who performed very well at this higher level when necessary so no
games had to be forfeited showing the Club's strength in depth. like the Under 10's this
Team is in the top half of their League Table. Moving up to the Under 13's we can
report on yet more success. Currently second in their League Caythorpe have beaten
Barkston, Bracebridge Heath (twice), Boston and Sleaford (twice) in a busy schedule

On Saturday, 18th July, Caythorpe Playing Field saw the start of the first ever Very
Amazing Pink Ribbon Race and produced some
extraordinary sights! Our Member of Parliament,
Stephen Phillips, came along to help start things off
and got a bit of a surprise because he hadn’t been
warned that as part of a selfie challenge participants
needed to try and get a photo with him, preferably
on a spacehopper.
He
certainly
entered
into the
spirit of
things, and is shown here with team
Walking Wounded, when we think he may be
exercising parliamentary privilege.
Weather for the day was perfect and with the
council having undertaken some essential
clearance on footpaths along the route, those who were walking were able to enjoy our
beautiful countryside without being stung by nettles.
The event will have raised about £5,000 for Breast Cancer Now, the charity newly
formed from the merger of
Breast Cancer Campaign and
Breakthrough Breast Cancer,
which will go towards vital
research in support of their aim
that no-one need die from this
disease by 2050.

Parish Council News July 2015
A Parish Council meeting was held on the 8th July 2015.
Mrs Kaberry-Brown introduced herself as the new District Councillor representing the
area that includes Carlton Scroop and Normanton on Cliffe. She explained that she sat
on the Planning committee and would look to support the Parish Council in any issues
that they may have.
An update was given regarding the appeal against the refusal to grant planning permis-
sion for the wind turbine in Carlton Scroop.
Parish Clerk Vacancy
The Chairman reported that there had been an expression of interest in the post and
interviews had taken place on the 29th July 2015 and as a result a new clerk (Mr Adrian
Illingworth) had been offered the position which he had accepted.
Aims and Targets
The Chairman explained that the Parish Plan which had been written in 2008 was now
out of date and needed revising. The plan would detail what the Parish Council hoped
to achieve in the next five years, however he stressed that it was important that the
views of the residents was vital in this process. If any resident of Carlton Scroop or
Normanton would like to discuss this please contact the Chairman.
Other Matters
It was reported that most of the footpaths which had been reported as blocked had now
been cleared, however one still remained blocked.
The next meeting of the Parish Council would be on Monday 7th September 2015 at
7:30 p.m.

Parish Plan Review
Operating independently of the Caythorpe and Frieston
Parish Council, a parish plan review group has been
formed to begin a series of consultations with local
people and businesses. Review group members are Jo
Russell, Jean Nelson, Tom Mountain, David Cree, Rob
Cook, Gordon Grant (chair) and Andrea Smith (clerk to
parish council, ex officio).
Youngsters from the village school have already been
involved in a series of projects, gathering information
about the community (housing, playing field, roads,
businesses, environment) and surveying each other, to
establish their views about what kind of community they
would like to see now and in the future. They have
produced some wonderful posters and displays which
you will be able to see at the Gala on the Playing Field
on Saturday 5 September. At the Gala you will also be
able to record your own views about community needs
and resources (there will be a dedicated parish review
stall). So please do come along.
There are plans to consult with community groups and
businesses and also to distribute a household question-
naire later in the year. Keep watching these pages.

In and Around the Garden
What a difference a week can make. I went away for a few days at the beginning of
July, and the hot weather had transformed the garden when I returned. All the brash
and bold stars of the high summer garden had begun to flower in shades of yellow,
orange, red and mauve. One plant that has rather surprised me is the unpronounce-
able Dianthus carthusianorum, a relative of the carnations and pinks. I acquired a
small plant 18 months ago, attracted by its blue green foliage and tall stem topped
with 3 or 4 tiny bright magenta flowers. This year it has sent out dozens of stems,
making a wonderful airy and long lasting display in one of the driest, stoniest parts of
the garden. A lucky find.
The insects are out in force; I have never seen so
many pollen beetles before. They always
appear in the garden after the oil-seed rape stops
flowering, and they definitely have a preference
for yellow and white flowers, but this year there
seem to be more than usual. Out of curiosity I
plucked a single-flowered yellow dahlia and
counted 146 of them in this one bloom alone.
So be careful if you smell a white rose – you
may inhale more than just its perfume!
A neighbour has reported a family of spotted
flycatchers in his garden. They have set up
home in a climbing hydrangea and have raised
two broods. These small brown birds are easily
identified by their habit of perching on a
conspicuous twig waiting for an insect to come
near. They then fly out and grab it in flight, and
using wings and tail as air brakes, turn on the
spot to fly back to their look-out post. They over-winter in Africa, returning in late
spring to breed; with all the concern over declining bird numbers it is pleasing to find
them doing well in Caythorpe.

Renewable Energy
September 18th was a critical date in many people’s minds, so it was with
much relief that we learned in July, before this six month expiry date in
September, that RWE, would not be appealing the SKDC Planning Refusal for
the five Wind Turbines at Temple Hill, Brandon.
The downside of this news was the disappointment to learn that Energie Kon-
tor are about to submit planning applications to SKDC and NKDC for 10 wind
turbines at Fulbeck Airfield. As decided at a recent cluster meeting of Parish
Council representatives for SKDC and NKDC, it is very important that as
many of the public write to or e-mail their District Councils setting out their
own views upon such applications. The overriding message from this meeting
was “to protect our countryside and landscape character.”
Straw Storage
Remaining with Fulbeck Airfield, the agents acting for Sleaford power station
straw baled storage and transportation are believed to be soon also submitting
a planning application for change of use from agriculture “to industrial stor-
age”. This follows a long consultation period with LCC Highways concerning
large load vehicular movements along the C100 (Stragglethorpe Lane) and the
excessive deposits of straw cuttings along the gutters and verges of the A17
towards Sleaford.
Mid UK Recycling
The recent fire at Ancaster has raised again a number of concerns as to the
health and safety and management issues among the surrounding communities
close to the Caythorpe recycling site.
I can confirm that all the Emergency agencies involved in such incidents,
together with the Lincolnshire Fire Brigade, put into operation at the recent
Ancaster incident the procedures developed following the de-brief meeting
after the 2012 Caythorpe fire. In the Ancaster case, the decision was to extin-
guish the fire, which, as we all know, took almost a week to achieve, with the
local community being advised to keep all windows and doors closed through-
out this period.
In the meantime, I have asked our County Councillor, Paul Wood, to press a
case for the review of Mid UK’s “Operators Licence” with the appropriate
body in the County Council.
