The foundation of a happy and fulfilling life is health and well-ness. What better way to start off the New Year with this issue!
In our community, health and wellness, and healthy living, is very much a part of our culture. Given the broad scope of health and wellness today, we tried to play our part in covering some stories that stand out in our community. Running, yoga, spin, meditation, healthy eating and nutrition, and so much more are just part of the building blocks of a healthy you and a healthier community.
Our feature story on page 26 this month looks at some incredible retreat destinations for wellness. Some near, some far but all deeply devoted to you and your well being. We hope you get to explore them and if you do, or have travelled already to these locations, connect with us on social media to share your experiences.
We also spotlight some great new businesses here in Del Mar and Carmel Valley. In Around Town, we celebrate new business openings over the past few months. Definitely recommend local new hot spot Crudo – for a look at this great new restaurant, see page 32. Fleet Feet Sports opened last year in Carmel Valley and is already a big part of the running and fitness community here - read more in our Local Limelight on page 34.
And don’t miss our spotlight on Resounding Joy on page 36. They are doing some amazing work and helping improve and enrich lives through music therapy.
So here’s to you Del Mar and Carmel Valley. Happy New Year and may the year ahead bring you and our whole community health, happiness and a new state of well being and enlightenment. You inspire us!

Healthy Lifestyle
For some people, death is the scariest thing they can imagine. But Dr. Bob
Uslander deals with it every day. In fact, he considers it his calling. “I had a sort of an awakening that I was supposed to be helping people at the end of life,” says Dr. Uslander.
A long-time medical doctor, he has prac-ticed medicine in California and as far away as Guam. After decades in the traditional medical system, he recognized that this was not where he is most needed. “The system does fine for people who are healthy,” says Dr. Uslander. “We’re learning more and more all the time about prevention of disease. We can often fix people with surgery and some-times with medications.”
But what happens when things get com-plex? “We are completely missing the boat and coming up short,” says Dr. Uslander. “When someone’s health becomes chal-lenged, there isn’t nearly enough support for them at home, and especially not from physi-cians who are committed to their wellbeing.”

Healthy Lifestyle (CONTINUED)
In 2001, Dr. Uslander helped a 32-year-old friend battling metastatic melanoma. He became his home-care physician and helped him and his family - a wife and three young children - through the end of life process. “My family also became very connected and supportive, and we ended up creating this little cocoon for Darren, and then we brought in hospice. That was the first time I’d ever actually seen hos-pice at work,” says Dr. Uslander, “and it was transformational for me.”
That experience planted a seed that later took root and blossomed into a new practice for Dr. Uslander, based on an innovative medical care model. “The work I know I’m supposed to be doing is with people at the end of life, guiding and supporting the patients and families. But I also love caring for people in the time before, as their health is changing and their needs are getting more complex, when they just need more support and compassion.”
He founded Integrated MD Care about a year ago; his office over-looks the beautiful Torrey Pines Lagoon and is steps away from his Del Mar home. “I’m trying to make sure that people aren’t living with fear. The circumstances that they are in can be overwhelming and scary but they don’t have to be if they have the proper connections and support.”
He explains that most of the time, patients and loved ones are left in the dark when the patient is facing a terminal illness. Traditional health care providers are short on time and long on patients, which weak-ens their ability to provide the highest quality care. Each physician at Integrated MD Care will care for no more than 15-20 patients at a time.
“We have incredible resources and incredible people and technol-ogy. But on the personal side of it, we are unable to meet people’s needs because there are too many people and too few providers to serve them,” says Dr. Uslander. That’s where Integrated MD Care can help patients and families. “No one is taking care of the families, guid-ing them. They’re out there hanging, trying to do the best they can.”
After a complimentary consultation, if the patient and family are agreeable, Dr. Uslander does an in-home assessment to review the patient’s situation, medical records, medications, and concerns and goals, and then he and his team design a program that will best meet the needs of the patient and the family.
The cost varies depending on people’s needs, time and resources, and ability to pay. The less intensive in-home care program might consist of a care manager and/or nurse visiting regularly, and Dr. Uslander visiting every few months, but being available 24/7 via phone, text, and email. More intensive programs involve Dr. Uslander being in the home two or three times a week (or more) and a care-giver team on-hand, collaborating to provide the best care.
Dr. Uslander, now more than ever, is filled with purpose and pas-sion. “I feel like our patients are having the absolute best experience in the last phase of their lives – the most peace, the most comfort. Their families are feeling supported and they feel like they’ve done everything they possibly could for their loved one, and that’s incred-ibly satisfying for me.”

1. Wine Protects the HeartA Kaiser Permanente study revealed that men who drink two 5 ounce glasses of wine a day died from heart disease at a lower rate (6.3%) than non-drinkers (8.6%), but heavy drinkers died at double the rate (12.7%). This is because the antioxidants (polyphenols) in the wine help increase the good (HDL) cholesterol preventing buildup. So don’t ditch the wine - drinking moderately protects your heart.
2. Wine Protects the Brain and Raises Your IQThe New England Medical Journal studied women ages 70-81 and found that moderate drinkers scored higher than non-drink-ers on mental function tests. They found an increase in brainpow-er with one drink per day and a 23 percent decrease in mental disease compared with non-drinkers. They also found a lowered risk of Alzheimer’s, dementia, stroke and blood clots. The reason-ing is that the polyphenols from the wine help relax blood vessels and promote better circulation. Unsurprisingly, a 2001 Danish Study comparing wine and beer drinkers found that wine drink-ers on average have 18 IQ points higher than beer drinkers. There you go - drinking wine does make you smarter.
Resolve to Keep Drinking Wine in 2017
3. Wine Saves MarriagesA study by the Journals of Gerontology found that older cou-ples that shared the same drinking habits stayed together and were happier than couples with differing drinking habits. Sharing wine together allows couples to experience things similarly. Yes, wine saves marriages and makes you happier.I’ll drink to that!

Hidden away among the trees on the 101 in Leucadia, you'll find Bloom Naturopathic Medicine where health and wellness are addressed with the cutting edge technolo-gies of today's naturopathic medicine and the wisdom of ancient healing arts, design-ing a complete ‘plan of health’ tailored to every patient’s specific needs.
"If you've been feeling out of sorts and mainstream medicine isn't helping, we can help you regain healthy balance in a different, more natural way. We take pride in providing a very high standard of individualized medical care so you feel nurtured and invigorated by the care and services we provide," says Dr. Amanda Ward, N.D. who is the founder and director of Bloom Naturopathic Health. "I am a strong advocate and practitioner of naturo-pathic medicine - treating the root cause of an illness instead of only the symptoms. I focus on treating the 'whole person' and doing so using the philosophies of naturopathy."
Every ‘Bloomie’ gets a treatment plan cus-tomized to match their individual needs. The Bloom staff does a full comprehensive consult on each new patient, examining every aspect of their health, and pride themselves on looking for what other healthcare professionals may have missed. Since opening her practice in 2007, Dr. Ward has frequently and passionately expressed her thoughts on women's health, hor-mone balancing, natural weight loss along with naturopathic medicine and all of its benefits.
Bloom Natural Health offers a menu of Nutritional Cocktail ‘Shots’ including the multiple B-Vitamin based or Skinny Shots™ as well as injectable micronutrient therapy for-mulations. Benefits include better sleep, libido, weight loss, energy, etc. "The best results and formulations are experienced when a micro-nutrient blood test is done to gauge exactly where a patient is deficient. I customize the shots based off those results so every patient gets my individual care and attention, and a custom treatment," she shares.
If you’ve never tried them before then their Injectable Happy Hour™ from 2pm – 7pm on Wednesdays, when their signa-ture Skinny Shot™ is 1/2 off regular price,
is well worth a visit. Bloom Natural Health has found much success with their Nutritional Cocktail Blend Bar™ and the Bloom Mobile™ Naturopathic Medicine van. The pink Mercedes sprinter van travels to you for shot parties and mobile health care. Chances are you’ve seen the Bloom van at GoodOnYa Organic Cafe, Total Women Gym in Encinitas, Whole Foods in Del Mar, Choice Juicery in Carlsbad, and at local runs and surf contests as well as wellness fairs.
Bloom Natural Health also offers an alterna-tive to standard anti-aging procedures called NOTOX. This anti-aging injection therapy was originally formulated in Italy and has been used in Europe for over 10 years. It utilizes highly specialized biologic medicine to treat fine lines and wrinkles, while its combination of natural substances has proven to be extremely effec-tive in providing a gentle lift to the face and neck. The platelet rich plasma stimulates con-nective tissue, assists your body's natural skin regeneration, stimulating connective tissue metabolism to improve overall tissue tone. A difference can be seen after the first treatment, but most noticeably after three months. The best part about it is that it is natural, safe and effective, plus there's no downtime.
This holistic gem strives to bring you the best of the best, visit after visit. The most innovative technologies and approaches to living your best life, because after all, the Bloom philosophy is based on ‘Let Your Life Be Your Medicine™’ and truly is a ‘New Medicine for the 21st Century™.’

Now Open
New York. Paris. San Francisco. And now, Carmel Valley. Foodies have long
traveled the world in search of innovative culinary delights. With the debut of Crudo by Pascal Lorange, Mediterranean-inspired cui-sine from one of the world’s most renowned chefs can be savored much closer home.
Crudo (which means raw in Italian and Spanish) is physically situated among retail out-lets at The Village at the new Pacific Highlands Ranch community, but is conceptually a world apart. The second you enter the restaurant it is clear this is no ordinary dining experience. Hues of white and orange define the decor as well as an abundance of natural light and the crisp scents of rosemary, lemon and kumquats. Bell peppers are perfectly situated on white square shelves while paintings are adorned with the restaurant’s signature spice blends.

lamps and dining tables. A private dining room with access to its own outdoor space is available for private events, and catering is also offered.
For those who love to wine and dine, Lorange has personally curated an extensive wine selection with just the perfect wine from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and California to complement every menu offering.
Lorange is a father to a young son, and he went above and beyond to make sure his restaurant was family friendly. Children are presented with a raw cookie dough animal when they arrive, which they can decorate with sprinkles and other edibles. Their creation is then baked and served after their meal. (Hint for kids: order the porcupine mac-n- cheese!)
Interested in learning from the master chef himself? Lorange hosts two-hour cooking classes at Crudo twice a month. The cost is $120 per person, which includes a welcome drink and cooking demonstration that showcases three Crudo menu offerings. Guests are then invited to enjoy the dishes with a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage of their choice. Bon Appétit!
CrudoPL.com
While some culinary food critics were nothing less than surprised when Lorange announced his location in a strip mall, the restaurant’s concept was specifically designed to complement the Southern California lifestyle. For one, Crudo celebrates the light and healthy flavors of the West Coast (think seafood and fresh produce) and mixes them with the spices and food preparation techniques of Asian cultures.
Crudo doesn’t require the requisite three-hour- minimum dining experience other culinary establishments are known for either. Lorange is well aware that today’s lifestyles can be quite hectic. Meals at Crudo are designed to last an hour, without a white tablecloth in sight. The restaurant seats up to 180 guests at tables and at the square, mar-ble-topped bar, which serves as a striking centerpiece and communal gathering spot.
To take full advantage of Southern California’s beautiful, year-round weather, Crudo offers an indoor/outdoor dining expe-rience. Bi-fold glass doors open to an outdoor shaded patio with couches, fire tables, heat
But Lorange’s true flair for uniting global sophistication with an elegantly informal style is most apparent in the food itself. This founder and executive chef has cooked in some of Europe’s finest Michelin-starred restaurants as well as for international celebrities like Julio Iglesias, Oscar de la Renta and Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Now, he has created a menu that mixes his European training and experience with fla-vors from around the world, blending tradi-tional cuisine from the Mediterranean with Japanese-inspired infusions. Thanks to the open kitchen design, lucky diners can even see this master chef in culinary action.
“I am excited to introduce new creative, fresh and affordable dishes to the neigh-borhood,” says Belgian-born Lorange, who splits his time between New York and his home in Carmel Valley. “My dream was to create my own namesake restaurant in a lively, welcoming environment designed for today’s modern families. Now, thanks to the incredible support of our entire community, that dream has materialized.”

Coupling art with science, music therapy aims to improve the social, cognitive, psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing of individuals and
communities. It tackles issues such as anxiety, stress, and pain management.“You can’t stop sound,” says Barbara Reuer, founder and CEO of Resounding
Joy. “It just goes through us, in us, around us. That’s why it’s such a powerful tool.”Reuer is an internationally recognized and widely published expert in music
therapy. In 1987, she founded MusicWorx Inc., a music therapy agency that serves medical and hospice patients, persons with special needs, and individuals dealing with various psychological issues. In 2005, Reuer founded the non-profit organi-zation Resounding Joy to also reach underserved populations.
The organization’s mission is to use therapeutic and recreational music programs to improve the overall wellbeing and quality of life for individuals and communities,

while expanding international awareness and increasing access to the power of music for social, community, and clinical uses.
“Music therapy can be extraordinarily effective,” says Jessica Blaisus, Resounding Joy’s Director of Development. “It can be the only thing that breaks through somebody’s pain or anxiety.”
The sessions may include therapeutic singing and music-mak-ing on various instruments for individuals or groups, song-writ-ing and lyric analysis for expression, guided music-based relax-ation and meditation, drumming circles, and overall community building and peer support.
The Resounding Joy team comprises of interns, board-certi-fied music therapists, board members, and a number of volun-teers, coined ‘Joy Givers’ and ‘Joy Makers’. The music therapists identify low-income facilities (specifically for older adults) that need supportive services as opposed to clinical music therapy, and then send Joy Giver volunteers.
Joy Givers—as well as Junior Joy Givers aged 6 to 18—receive recreational music training led by the organization’s therapists through the Mindful Music program, which fosters intergenerational relationships and provides seniors in nursing homes with invaluable social experiences. Joy Makers primar-ily provide administrative, event, and fundraising assistance.
The organization serves people of all diagnoses and age ranges, from newborns in neo-natal intensive care to 106-year-olds! Their broad services are provided to support veterans, teen parents bonding with their babies, older adults, and hospitalized children and their families.
Powerful and cost-effective music therapy services are offered through four main programs—Healing Notes, Mindful Music, Semper Sound, and Sound Minds—which benefit low-income and underserved communities. Other programs are created as requested by community members. Every session begins with an assessment, and then the therapist works with the client to determine which goals to focus on throughout treatment.
“We work with populations that we’ve identified that have a very specific need,” says Blaisus. Resounding Joy has more than 50 partnerships throughout the community. Their ser-vices are fueled by individual donations, community fund-raising, and philanthropic grants.
“We provide services that meet clinical, corporate and wellness needs. Each session looks completely different based on the per-son(s) we are working with,” says Lindsay Zehren, a Resounding Joy therapist who also leads their Drums Alive DRUMTASTIC class and yoga sessions at the Music Wellness Center.
“Things are always going to be changing and there’s always going to be interesting community classes and music lessons,” says Reuer. “You don’t have to be a musician to come to us. But if you want to be one, we can help you with that. We work with whatever ability you have and go from there.”

DR. FITZPATRICK AT FOREFRONT OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
ARTICLE SHANNON BARR | PHOTOGRAPHY MICHELLE SCOLMAN
Growing up, Dr. Kevin Fitzpatrick DDS knew exactly what he wanted to pursue. “I had a super good visit to my dentist when I was two
or three-years-old, and I told my parents - That’s what I want to do.”Fast forward to May 2015 and he wanted to open his own practice,
after having initially moved to San Diego in 1992, leaving and returning multiple times for dental school and assigned stations while working for the Navy. He soon found the perfect match - a particular Del Mar office whose doctor of 43 years was ready to retire.
Dr. Fitzpatrick, his wife Lisa, also a business owner, and three chil-dren moved to Del Mar and call the city home. “Soon as we moved, we immediately got involved in the community. It’s where we live, it’s where I work, it’s home. It means a ton for me to be able to know my patients, to see them walking around in town!”
One of the latest tools Dr. Fitzpatrick uses is the SOLEA laser. Replacing drills and anesthetics, the laser uses a light beam to swiftly and painlessly cut through tooth enamel and soft tissue. When the light hits enamel, it vaporizes a thin layer of the tooth structure. Because the light’s wavelength interferes with the nerve's pain signals, it offers a pain-free experience for patients. The laser can be used for fillings, oral skin growth removal, and to aid severely tongue-tied patients.
Dr. Fitzpatrick believes many dentists will eventually adopt this tech-nology and is excited to be at the forefront. Before he bought the laser, he
did thorough research on the technology. “I’ve known about this laser for about four years so I definitely did my homework.” Despite its novelty, he believes it will continue to gain traction in dental offices. “I saw what was going on with the technology, and realized this is going to be something that a lot of folks are going to have two to three years from now.”
The painless laser has attracted many parents to his office, primarily through word-of-mouth. “It’s the mom who brought in her screaming 6-year-old who couldn’t be treated the last time because they had a bad reaction to the treatment, or they were so afraid of needles that they couldn’t bare to sit still and have the doctor use anesthesia.”
At his practice, Dr. Fitzpatrick takes a preventative approach, addressing issues before treatment is needed. Constantly researching cutting edge technol-ogy in dentistry, his unwavering passion for his pro-fession shows in his rapport with his clients, new and old. “It’s a fun job, full of excitement and challenges. It is great to be able to help people become healthier.”

Financial Buzz
FOR DIVORCED WOMENARTICLE LAURIE ITKIN, FINANCIAL ADVISOR AND CERTIFIED DIVORCE FINANCIAL ANALYST (CDFA)
Have you thought about your new year’s resolutions? Maybe you vow to increase the frequency of your gym visits or eat
healthier? While many of us focus our resolutions on becoming physically fit, as a divorced woman, one of the most important res-olutions you can make is to become financially fit. Make it your goal to be clear about your financial situation and have a plan to ensure that you don’t outlive your money.
I am often hired by newly-divorced women to manage assets from a settlement. These assets may include retirement and/or brokerage accounts, or proceeds from the sale of the marital home. But my job goes beyond just deciding which stocks, bonds, and other assets to include in a portfolio. My job is to make sure my client doesn’t run out of money. In my experience, even affluent women with significant assets and spousal support payments fear running out of money.
To ensure you never find yourself in the same dilemma, here are some resolutions to consider for financial fitness in 2017:
1. Know your net worth. Take inventory of your assets and debts. If your debts exceed your assets, you could be on the path to running out of money. This is the first step and the most important in deter-mining the strength of your finances.2. Educate yourself about money. Spend 30 minutes a week learning about finance and investing. Subscribe to a newsletter, buy a book, read the Wall Street Journal, listen to Marketplace on NPR, or download a podcast.3. Determine your ‘wants’ vs. ‘needs’. Cut one or two of the former from your budget and invest that money instead. You’ll be surprised how quickly your money can grow over time if invested properly. Having a nest egg gives you tremendous options later in life.4. Ask a buddy to be your financial fitness partner. Attend finan-cial seminars together or create your own informal group to discuss money issues. Be each other’s support system and help keep both your finances in check when needed.5. Seek the help of a financial advisor. If you are experiencing anxiety about the future, find a fee-only financial advisor you like, respect, and trust.

aserati Levante, the first SUV in the brand's more than 100-year history, completes the existing range of saloon and sports cars, extending the offering together with the Quattroporte, Ghibli, GranTurismo and GranCabrio models. Built at the Mirafiori
plant in Turin, Italy, the first cars have already come off the assembly line since the launch at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show.
The design of the new model features clear associations with the Maserati brand and its distinctive Italian character: the aggressive front introduces new, tapered headlights separated into two elements, with the upper headlight unit connected to the radiator grille. Maserati's design signature is clearly visible on the sides: the three iconic air vents on the front wings, the trapezoidal C-pillar with the “Saetta”
logo and the large, frameless door windows. The rear is dominated by the very tapered back window and stream-lined shape, both typical of a high-performance sports car.
At a technical level, the Levante's chassis is designed to combine the outstanding on-road performance typical of every Maserati with unrivalled handling even on very low-grip surfaces and an excellent off-road performance and ride. The new SUV boasts a high level of content as stan-dard, with all versions featuring sophisticated electronic suspension with controlled damping and air springs, which can be set on several levels, “Q4” intelligent all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission specially calibrated for the brand's new SUV. When it comes to power units, the Levante is equipped with both petrol and diesel engines that are all Euro6-compliant.
