Del Mar Recap for Saturday (7-24-21)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (6.5f, 5.5f, 6f). The lone dirt route at 8f was captured by midpack stalker Salah. The turf course winners were a presser at 8T, a closer at 8T, a flat mile stalker elevated to first through disqualification, a stalker at 9T, and a closer at 8T (rail at 12 feet).

With multiple ship and win horses competing at Del Mar, I am keeping track of where the winners are coming from. On Saturday, eight winners last started at SA, one winner exited LRC, one was a 2yo filly FTS for Mark Glatt. Clem Labine was the other winner, and he exited a runner-up finish at Pleasanton in NoCal.

Riding double for leading pilot Flavien Prat, and he picked up another stakes win aboard United in the Eddie Read (G2). Simon Callaghan saddled two sharp winners. His promising sophomore filly Sea Dreamer ran off the screen in her dirt sprint maiden win in the 3rd, and Madone rallied to defeat heavy favorite Going Global in the San Clemente (G2).

Eddie Read Stakes (G2) Recap - Winner: United ($8.60)

Page 2: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

United bounced back nicely in this spot after throwing in a rare below par effort in the Whittingham (G2) last time. Award Winner set the pace and pressed from 2nd, took a short lead, and United ran him down. Prat rode the winner and he put him in a good stalking spot, and he just had a bit more stamina than the beaten favorite. Count Again did his thing in a rallying show finish, and was followed by Vintage Print, Award Winner, Restrainedvengence, and Say The Word.

San Clemente Stakes (G2) Recap - Winner: Madone ($13.60)

The pace was fast in this flat mile turf stakes and heavy favorite Going Global (IRE) was patiently handled under Prat. He rallied in the lane and briefly led, but Juan Hernandez gave Madone a great closing ride and made the last run to upset the favorite by a half-length. Tetragonal (IRE) stalked and held off my value top choice Karakatsie for show honors. The latter, a Florida shipper, dod not have the smoothest journey under Kent D and actually ran a decent race from an outer post.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $440,437, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $7,590.76. The jackpot carryover stands at $225,863. There is also a Super High 5 carryover of $18,040 heading into the Sunday finale.

July 25 Picks:

DMR 1 (MSW, 6.5f) Primary - #6 BOBBY BO, #3 AffableSecondary - #1 Who’s the StarWagers: Exacta 6-3, Trifecta Key 6/1-3

Page 4: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

$1 Place Pick ALL (races 1-10): 6/2-6/7/5-6/3-6/7/5/7/5-9/12 ($16)

Comments: #6 Bobby Bo (6-5) dueled through above par splits and missed 3rd by a nose as the 1-2 favorite at SA April 3. Prat rides back, Baffert is strong with this type of layoff runner, and he drew outside and shows a pair of bullets for this. #3 Affable (5-2) is a $600k purchase with three runner-up finishes from as many starts. He adds blinkers and turns back in distance. He fired a local gate bullet for this July 17. #1 Who’s the Star (3-1) is a $375k purchase exiting a solid runner-up finish in his career debut. Sadler shows a +ROI with second timers and Hernandez has been clicking with this barn recently.

DMR 2 (MSW, 5.5f) Primary - #6 MURRAY, #2 Drink the WindSecondary - #4 Carbonite, #7 Barossa, #1 SumterWagers: #6 to win, Quinella 2-6, Trifecta Key 6/1-2-4-7, Trifecta 1-2-4-7/6/1-2-4-7

Comments: Baffert saddles three of the seven entrants, and #4 Carbonite (8-1) is the one with experience. The latter adds blinkers after an okay 3rd in his LRC bow, and Smith takes the call. #6 Murray (5-2) is a $300k son of Street Sense and dam has tossed one winner from two starters. His last four moves were from the gate. #7 Barossa (7-2) is the third Baffert and they paid $775k for the son of Into Mischief. Dam has produced two winners from four starters and his three July works were all from the gate. #2 Drink the Wind (2-1) had a big local gate work July 19 and Miller can strike with a FTS. Dam has

Page 5: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

produced one winner from three starters. #1 Sumter (7-2) is working like he has some ability for Mandella. The inside post can be intimidating for debut juveniles. Murray might be the right one for Baffert if he can outrun Drink the Wind.

DMR 3 (Clm-50k, 5T) Primary - #7 GATOR SHINING, #2 Gates of HeavenSecondary - #10 Hot Box, #3 ExhaultingWagers: #7 to win, Quinella 7/2-3-10

Comments: #7 Gator Shining (4-1) drops to a new low in his second start after a layoff. His lone win was at this course and distance last fall. I picked him a few times since his maiden win but he was never able to duplicate that effort vs. better foes. Take away his below par stakes efforts and he hit the board in two of three optional claiming turf sprint starts since his MSW win. #2 Gates of Heaven (5-1) was nabbed out of his last by Miller and the sharp turf sprint conditioner immediately puts him on the sod. Kantharos is a solid turf sire and Prat takes the call. He had a rough start from an outer post in his first turf attempt last fall, and chased and weakened in his other turf sprint attempt. He ran fine in his local July 17 return in a dirt sprint. #10 Hot Box (7-2) figures to flash early speed from the outside post. He fired in both turf sprints and cuts back a furlong. #3 Exhalting (6-1) drops in class and adds lasix, and he has speed. Bravo rides for O’Neill and he looks like the one to catch.

DMR 4 (Clm-32k, 6f) - DMR Best BetPrimary - #6 LITTLEBITAMEDAL, #5 Alexandros

Page 6: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

Secondary - #3 Major Cabbie, #8 California Street, #2 BiblemanWagers: #6 to win, Quinella 6/3-5, Trifecta 5-6/2-3-5-6-8/2-3-5-6-8

Comments: #6 Littlebitamedal (4-1) is a two-time local winner with a decent late kick, and he should get pace to chase. He drops into a good spot for Miller and he has struck three times at this distance. #5 Alexandros (7-2) exits back-to-back wins at OP and CD, and Mullins claimed him out of his last for $25k. He chased the pace in his last two wins and will probably try to get into a forward position under Gonzalez. Littlebitamedal’s stablemate #3 Major Cabbie (3-1) drops and turns back, and Prat rides for Miller. He made a wide move from the outside post before flattening out in an optional claimer at one mile June 26. #8 California Street (12-1) adds blinkers and turns back in distance. Rispoli rides back after a runner-up finish in a $20k/3L flat mile affair at SA. #2 Bibleman (4-1) was nabbed out of his last by quality conditioner Fincher and the Texas shipper might try to wire the field.

DMR 5 (Str-Alw, 8T) Primary - #6 DEISE DELIGHT, #3 SukiSecondary - #7 Viazar, #2 Little Miss Ellie, #1 Unbreakable Wagers: #6 to win, Exacta 3-6/3-6-7, Trifecta 3-6/1-2-3-6-7/1-2-3-6-720 cent Rainbow Pick 6 Ticket (Races 5-10): 3-6/7-13/2-5/7-8/2-5-9-10/3-8-12 ($38.40)

Comments: #6 Deise Delight (7-2) ran well in all four

Page 7: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

starts and followed up an 8T MSW win at GG with a good 2nd at SA. Prat knows her now and she will probably chase the pace. #3 Suki (3-1) switched to turf at CD in May and really turned things around with a trio of strong efforts. She showed improved tactical speed in both starts since the Matt Shirer claim, and she probably fits with this West Coast group. #7 Viazar (6-1) fired trifecta shots in all six turf routes and five of those races were at DMR. This is her first start since November 2020 and her winning rider Smith strings along. #2 Little Miss Ellie (8-1) switches to turf and the fairly reliable filly has a good tactical running style and an inner post for the productive Kent D/Cerin team. #1 Unbreakable (6-1) is 1-for-8 with five show finishes on turf. She should save all the ground before launching her rally and might be able to land a share.

DMR 6 (Mcl-50k, CA-bred, 5.5f) Primary - #7 THIRSTY CHAPO, #13 Floyd KnowlesSecondary - #5 City of Champions, #3 Medina Man, #4 I’m WinningWagers: #7 to win, Quinella 7-13, Trifecta Key 7/3-4-5-13, Trifecta 3-4-5-13/7/3-4-5-13

Comments: #7 Thirsty Chapo (3-1) rallied to finish a clear 2nd in his LRC bow July 3. We have seen Los Al shippers win more than once at the current stand and Baze wins races with Periban. #13 Floyd Knowles (4-1) worked from the gate twice at SA and had a nice local 5f move July 18. Miyadi can strike with a FTS. #5 City of Champions (15-1) debuted in a CA-bred MSW affair at LRC June 27 and he did not have a great trip that day. Truman has good stats in dirt sprints and Pyfer will probably try to get

Page 8: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

him involved early. #3 Medina Man (4-1) improved second time out and both starts were in the state bred MSW ranks. He adds blinkers and would not have to improve much to compete for the win. #4 I’m Winning (8-1) drops, turns back, and returns to dirt while facing state bred company. He removes blinkers and might show something.

DMR 7 (Daisycutter, 5T) Primary - #2 QUERELLE, #5 SuperstitionSecondary - #4 Constantia, #1 Bulletproof One, #10 Bruja EscarlataWagers: #2 to win, Quinella 2-5, Trifecta 2-5/1-2-4-5-10/1-2-4-5-10

Comments: #2 Querelle (6-1) needed her Wilshire (G3) return and she was clearly using that flat mile event to build up fitness. The late running turf sprint specialist should get lively splits to chase and might get there under Hernandez. #5 Superstition (5-2) is a consistent early-pressing type with a two-for-two local turf sprint record. She reconnects with her winning rider Prat and might get first run behind multiple speed horses. #4 Constantia (6-1) should get plenty of pace to chase but might run out of ground at this abbreviated trip. She has been a solid late runner since they turned her into a turf sprinter this year. #1 Bulletproof One (4-1) makes her first start in 10+ months for Miller, and her blazing early foot is frequently a dangerous weapon. She is not the only front runner signed on but might be the speed of the speed. #10 Bruja Escarlata (4-1) is a perfect three-for-three for Sadler and she is fast early. Baze stays put and she will have to

Page 9: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

hustle early from an outer post.

DMR 8 (OC-62.5k/2x, 6.5f) - DMR Best BetPrimary - #7 COLT FICTION, #8 Fashionably FastSecondary - #1 Canadian Pride, #2 HowbeitWagers: #7 to win, Quinella 7-8, Trifecta 7-8/1-2-7-8/1-2-7-8

Comments: #7 Colt Fiction (5-2) exits a solid runner-up finish behind fleet Thor’s Echo winner Brickyard Ride. That ended his two-race win streak but he was hardly embarrassed from the inside post and Rispoli knows him now. He is three-for-four at DMR and should sit a nice outer tactical trip. #8 Fashionably Fast (4-1) checked in a length and a quarter behind Colt Fiction June 12. He likes this course and distance, frequently fires trifecta shots, and projects an outside stalking trip. #1 Canadian Pride (7-2) owns early-pressing versatility and he went all the way from the inside post at SA at 6f March 12. The sharp gelding landed the place in both local starts and he fired in both starts at 6.5f including a dueling maiden victory last fall. #2 Howbeit (3-1) exits a front running win at this distance from the rail post at SA. He does not need the lead to be successful and he is a solid threat if he duplicates his last, but he is 0-for-4 at DMR.

DMR 9 (California Dreamin’, 8.5T) Primary - #5 INDIAN PEAK, #2 Wound TightSecondary - #9 Brandothebartender, #10 North County Guy, #7 Galilean, #6 Ward ’n JerryWagers: #5 to win, Quinella 5/2-9-10, Trifecta 2-5/2-5-6-7-9-10/2-5-9-10

Page 10: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

Comments: #5 Indian Peak (8-1) moves to the Miller barn and this is his first start as a gelding. Prat rides and this one captured the Snow Chief Stakes on turf at SA last year. #2 Wound Tight (6-1) exits an uncomfortable 4th in his much needed turf sprint return in the Siren Lure, and that was clearly a prep for this. He ran well in all four local turf routes and might be the one to reel in under profitable turf rider Kent D. #9 Brandothebartender (4-1) is back on turf and Rispoli guided him to a pair of state bred stakes wins on the sod at SA earlier this year. I have always liked #10 North County Guy (7-2) and he finished 1-2 in seven of his last ten starts. The versatile gelding won four of those races and he runs well fresh. #7 Galilean (4-1) won this event last year and this is his first start in 8+ months. He projects a decent tactical trip and has run well off a layoff more than once. #6 Ward ’n Jerry (8-1) ran out of stamina in the San Juan Capistrano (G3) at 14T last time. The two-time local winner shortens way up and will try to get involved late.

DMR 10 (Mcl-20k, 6.5f) Primary - #12 KIND BUT SHE LIES, #8 RowangoeshollywoodSecondary - #3 Be’esame Me Mucho, #14 Dynamite Queen, #2 Can FlyWagers: #12 to win, Trifecta Key 12/2-3-8-14, Trifecta 2-3-8-14/12/2-3-8-1450 cent Super High Five: 8-12/8-12/2-3-14/2-3-14/2-3-14 ($6)

Comments: #12 Kind But She Lies (3-1) improved in her

second start in blinkers at the $30k level June 11. Kent D strings along and she may have met a field she can topple. #8 Rowangoeshollywood (5-2) dropped in class and landed the show in her last pair, and she turns back and seems to fit nicely in this spot. #3 Be’esame Me Mucho (6-1) sports a trio of gate works for this including one at DMR July 19. Ellis can strike with a FTS and there is not much to topple. #14 Dynamite Queen (8-1) began her career in a better dirt route and she pulled up and walked off. Lewis is pretty good with second timers and she might go much better. #2 Can Fly (6-1) earned an improved number second time out and still has some upside. Let’s see if she can avoid breaking slowly in this event.

BONUS STAKES FROM SARATOGA

SAR 9 (G3 Shuvee, 9f) #6 CRYSTAL BALL (4-1) just missed in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at

Page 15: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

Saratoga last summer and went to the sidelines after finishing up the track in the Alabama (G1). She captured all three of her starts this year vs. lesser company and earned solid speed ratings each time. Luis Saez sticks with the early-pressing filly and she should be in the thick of things throughout at a speed friendly distance. #7 Royal Flag (5-2) always finishes in the top three for Chad Brown. Joel Rosario got to know her in a head defeat in the Doubledogdare (G3) April 16, and Letruska defeated her by a length in this race last year. #5 Antoinette (4-1) switched to dirt and chased Letruska home in the Fleur de Lis (G2) June 26. I like her early-pressing speed and John Velazquez was aboard for her victory in the $500k Saratoga Oaks on turf last summer. #4 Dunbar Road (2-1) made a middle move before flattening out in her first start this year in the la Troienne (G1). She has run fast enough to win this on multiple occasions and might be able to rebound at underlaid odds for Chad Brown. #1 Horologist (8-1) seems to have tailed off since winning the nine panel Top Flight at Aqueduct in her first start of the year. She was the beaten favorite in her last two stakes starts at this distance and needs to rediscover her best form to threaten these. She reconnects with her winning pilot Junior Alvarado. She won three stakes since moving to the Bill Mott barn, and she broke from outer posts in each of those victories. #2 Gold Spirit (8-1) is a South American import now conditioned by Chad Brown. She aired in a couple of stakes in Chile last year and might need time to acclimate to her new surroundings. She does show a pair of bullet workouts at Belmont Park for this engagement. #3 Liberty M D (30-1) won both of her starts at Churchill around one turn earlier this year.

Page 16: DEL MAR full card + bonus Saratoga stakes for Sunday (7-25 ...

She gets a class and distance test in this spot. Wagers: #6 to win, Exacta. 6/5-7, Exacta 5-7/6, Trifecta 6-7/ALL/5
