Colour Design Context

Mind Design is an independent London based graphic design studio founded in 1999 by RCA graduate Holger Jacobs. Mind Design focuses on integrated design which combines corporate identity, print, web and interior design. We work for a wide range of clients across various sectors; from startups to established companies.

Our philosophy and approach is based on a passion for craftsmanship and typography. We offer practical and friendly design solutions and believe that content and form are inseparable. It is important for us to work in close collaboration with clients, ideally right from the start. Every project is seen as a new challenge and we never follow an already established graphic house style.

“Ours is a simple approach: listen to our clients; understand their audience; solve their problems. We’ve learnt that it’s easier to make yourself understood when you speak in black and white. It helps to move beyond the grey areas and deliver a message loud and clear (or quiet and clear, if the brief requires). But there’s more to it than that. We’re avid collectors of all things visual. We’re passionate about creative colour – the bright idea that catches the eye, connects with an audience and makes a message memorable.”

Rick Berkelmans (1986) work is full of action and humor and consists of a strong mix of images, typography and color. Never being too much in your face, Berkelmans’ always makes sure his work is packed with a certain attitude, casual but well thought through. The finishing touch to his illustrations is Rick’s love for printing techniques, which combines his fresh illustrations with a unique vintage look.

Rick lives and works in Breda where he runs his oneman design studio Hedof. With a combination of commercial projects and exhibitions he raised his profile on an international level. Clients include Anorak magazine, Mini, Effenaar, Sony Playstation, Graphic Design Museum, Eight Magazine, Google, Red Bull, Zwijsen, Casio G shock, Arte and Red Cross.

MEMPHIS was a Milan-based collective of young furniture and product designers led by the veteran Ettore Sottsass. After its 1981 debut, Memphis dominated the early 1980s design scene with its post-modernist style.

“Edwin van Gelder is an independent graphic designer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After graduating from from Utrecht School of the Arts in 2004, van Gelder founded Mainstudio and has worked under the name ever since. Mainstudio’s projects include editorial design, books and visual identities for clients within architecture, art and fashion. Clients include Frame Publishers, Wiel Arets Architects, and the Dutch Fashion Biennial. Van Gelder has won various international awards (Art Directors Club New York, Best Dutch Book Design) and has been part of different international design juries, such as Art Directors Club New York, Selected A - Graphic Design from Europe, and the Art Directors Club the Netherlands. His work, as well as interviews, has been published in various books and magazines, including +81 Magazine, Slanted, and Process Journal of Design. Van Gelder loves typography, magazines, identities and books. His design approach is creating a clear concept, while always playing with the context of the information and looking for something unique in every assignment.”

Two years later we felt the call of the west, so we made the great migration to Portland, OR and started AWH”
