Overview
Post-harvesttechnologydealswiththescienceappliedto agricultural produce after harvest for thepurposeofpreservation, conservation, processing, packaging, storage, distributionandmarketingtomeetthefoodand nutritional requirements of consumers.
Post-harvest technology ensures the quality ofperishables while improving the sustainability ofthe fresh chain. This is achieved through the useof optimum harvest factors, reduction of losses inhandling, packaging, transportation and controlledatmosphere (CA) storage with modern infrastructureandprocessing intoawidevarietyofproducts.Post-harvest technology is fundamental to achieving foodsufficiencybyavoidinglossesandprovisionofqualityfood and nutrition as well asmore rawmaterials forprocessing, thus ensuring better returns to farmers.
Experts who work in post-harvest technology applyaninterdisciplinaryapproachwhichincludesscientificcreativity, technological innovation and commercialentrepreneurship.

There is also a shift from general practice to specialisation.Forinstance,inInternalMedicinealone, thereisaglobalshiftfromtraininggeneralphysicianswho handle a wide variety of diseases to physicianswho specialise only on certain parts of the humananatomy such as cardiologists, gastroenterologists, renal physicians, dermatologists, neurologists, andendocrinologists.
Another trend is the rising cost of drugs whichforms a substantial part of medical treatment. Forthis reason, patients with limited financial means orwithout insurancewillfinditdifficulttoaccessqualityhealthcare.
The roles of doctors are also expanding. Aside their primary roles as healers, doctors are taking onadditional responsibilities as administrators, business executives,book-keepersandstore-keepers.
