    SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS ON PRACTICUM ARRANGEMENTS FORSTUDENT TEACHERS

    Programme: Bachelor of Arts/Science (Education), Year 3Type of Practicum: Teaching Practice 1 (TP1)Duration: 5 weeks

    Cooperating Schools in NIEs Practicum programme are kindly requested to assist the studentteachers in their professional development through the provision of guidance and practicumlearning experiences. To this end, some guidelines are suggested:

    1. Appointment of experienced members of staff as Cooperating Teachers (CTs) to help andguide the student teachers in their professional development.

    2. Induction of student teachers into the school establishment and culture by the Principal/Vice-Principal/School Coordinating Mentor (SCM).

    3. Introduction of student teachers to the staff and students of the school, and provision ofworkspace in the staff room.

    4. Arrangement of Timetables to provide

    a. Primary Schools: a total of 20-24 (10-12 hours) teaching periods per week

    a total of 15-17 (7.58.5 hours) teaching periods per week forstudent teachers with only 1 CS subject

    Secondary Schools: a total of 16-20 (10-12 hours) teaching periods per week

    (Note: For PE student teachers, at least 50% of the periods assigned should be for PElessons)

    b. opportunities to teach the CS subject(s) as indicated on the computer printout, in no morethan 2 levels per CS, and

    c. Primary Schools: opportunities to teach classes in both upper and lower primarylevels, but NOT Pri 1 and the very weakclasses in other levels;the school decides which session the student teacher shouldteach in;

    Secondary Schools: opportunities to teach only non-graduating classes.

    5. Arrangements for student teachers to observe how some CCAs are conducted, but NOT totake charge of the CCAs.

    6. Student teachers may be asked to help relieve classes when staff is on medical leave. Therecommendation is no more than 2 periods per day.

    7. Arrangements for student teachers to begin TP1 by helping their CTs plan lessons, prepareresources, manage students, and assisting their CTs in some guided teaching1 in the initialperiod before moving on to teaching whole lessons independently.

    8. Student teachers are also required to write reflections on their own teaching (as aparagraph at the end of their lesson plans).

    9. Student teachers to be given opportunities to observe their Cooperating Teachers and otherexperienced teachers teaching and managing the classes/levels/streams in Week 1 andthroughout the TP1.

    10. Observation by Cooperating Teachers of student teachers classroom teachingperformance of complete lessons in the last 3 weeks. Recommended number of formalobservations: a total of 4 for the CS subjects.

    11. The student teachers NIE Supervisor (NIES) will be making 1 lesson observation visit.

    12. Moderation is compulsory for the award of Fail grade. Please refer to the TP1 Schedule fordeadline to confirm moderation cases.

    1 Guided teaching can take the form of a progression of practice from teaching of lesson segments, to

    co- or paired-teaching with the CT, and finally to monitored independent teaching of complete lessons.The progression of guided teaching can vary among student teachers depending on the individuals levelof progress.
