• Transition metal complex– A ‘molecule’ with a transition metal at the centre
• Ligand– The molecule or ion that binds to the central metal in a complex
• Coordinate group– Another word for ligand, if the ligand is a molecule

• Add/subtract a proton: creates a different atom• Add/subtract a neutron: creates a different isotope• Add/subtract an electron: changes oxidation state / creates ion
Isotopes of hydrogen
• 3 forms of hydrogen:• Protium, deuterium, tritium
• Differ only in the number of neutrons they have• Adding another proton would make it helium

at·om [áttəm]• (plural at·oms) n
• 1. smallest part of element: the smallest portion into which an element can be divided and still retain its properties, made up of a dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by a system of electrons. Atoms usually do not divide in chemical reactions except for some removal, transfer, or the excha
nge of specific electrons.
• They are the single elements as they appear on the periodic table
• They are neutral (have no charge)
• mol·e·cule [móllə kyl]
• (plural mol·e·cules) n • 1. CHEMISTRY smallest part of a chemical compound: the smallest physical unit
of a substance that can exist independently, consisting of one or more atoms held together by chemical forces.
• Two or more atoms that are joined together by covalent or ionic bonding

of atoms that has acquired an electric charge by losing or gaining one or more electrons
