the Ultra business model
Why Ultra is different
9
Ultra businesses constantly innovate to create solutions to customerrequirements that are different from and better than those of theGroup’s competitors in a way that the customer values. In identifyingdifferentiated solutions, prime consideration is given not to whatUltra would like to sell but to the problem the customer wants toaddress. This flexibility covers not just the technical attributes of theproduct or system but also the commercial package, the trainingand the support in which the customer is interested.
The Group is agnostic as to the source of the technology that isrequired to deliver the solution. When proven technology thatmeets the customers’ requirements exists outside the Group, Ultra ishappy to form teaming partnerships to access it. Ultra sees theseteaming arrangements as a source of competitive advantage, allowing Ultra to deliver differentiated solutions that meet customerneeds efficiently. It is important that these teaming arrangementsare of benefit to all parties – by working together, the teammembers are able to achieve something that would not be possiblewithout teaming.
ULTRA’S CUSTOMERSUltra’s independence allows it to work with the world’s majorprime contractors in its markets and to sell its wide portfolio ofspecialist capabilities to a broad range of customers around theworld. Within the Group’s top customers, such as the USDepartment of Defense (DoD), the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)and BAE Systems, the Group actually supplies to a wide range ofdifferent project offices, integrated project teams and platformteams. Therefore, Ultra deals with a larger number of differentcustomers than it initially appears and is positioned on more than350 platforms and programmes worldwide.
ULTRA’S POSITION IN THE SUPPLY CHAINWithin the definition of the supply chain shown in the graphicbelow, Ultra’s specialist capabilities are mainly at tiers 3 and 4,supplying equipment and components to support tier 1 and 2sub-systems and programmes. The Group does undertake tier 2sub-system integration but does this mainly when integrating itsown tier 3 offerings. Therefore, Ultra understands the tier 3detailed interfaces and so is able to manage the risk inherent intier 2 sub-system integration activities.
Ultra has no strategic aim to be a tier 1, top level platform provider. The Group is therefore non-threatening to the tier 1 primecontractors such as BAE Systems or Rolls-Royce and counts themamongst its largest customers. They can rely on Ultra to provide thespecialist capabilities at which the Group is expert. Concentrating ontiers 3 and 4, rather than aiming to be a tier 1 platform provider, means that no single platform or programme typically accounts formore than 5% of Group revenue for the year, so the cancellation orcurtailment of any single programme is unlikely to have a significantadverse impact on the Group.
SUPPLY CHAIN
Typical tier offerings
Tier 1 (Platform provider)Responsible for being the prime contractor of the platform inquestion, examples being a naval vessel or a terminal at an airport.
Tier 2 (Sub-system integrator)Responsible for integrating equipment or components that willmake up a functional element of the platform. Examples ofsub-system integration that Ultra has completed include integratedsonar systems and wing ice protection systems.
Tier 3 (Equipment supplier)Ultra has a large presence at this level of the supply chain, supplyingequipment such as data links, cryptographic equipment and largeelectrical transformers.
Tier 4 (Component supplier)Ultra also provides a broad range of smaller components onto manyprogrammes worldwide, including sensors for measuring theperformance of a nuclear reactor and joysticks to control UAVs.
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS – DELIVERED IN PARTNERSHIPIn its specialist capability areas, Ultra’s understanding of the customer environment and theprojected capability gaps that the customer would like addressed – in short, its understandingof the customer ‘problem statement’ – is a key differentiator.
