LIMITED DOMESTIC MARKET,INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGES
Today, the Swiss Avionics, Security and Defense Industry containsaround 100 companies, larger enterprises as well as SME‘s,subsidiaries of large multinational corporate groups, companieswhose activities are dedicated to armament completely or to a largeextent, companies with strategic business in armament as well asin other areas, companies acting as suppliers to domestic andforeignOEM‘s with production of all sorts of equipment, assembliesand parts (often dual use), provision of special processes andvarious engineering services etc. The so-called “SWISS-ASD”Industry offers more than 10,000 valuable positions for engineers, scientists and qualified professionals, including a wide range ofapprenticeship programs.
A stable domestic market is highly important for the progress and thedevelopment of valuable ASD industry jobs. It is imperative, that theSwiss industry is able to participate substantially in the annualarmament program of the Swiss Army. But the local market is verylimited and wavering demands are a fact. Export can compensate for these ups anddowns - or much better - enable substantial growth. An important prerequisite for theadvancement of export is success in the domestic market. SWISS-ASD companies fight forthe right to sell their products, services and military equipment abroad, based on fairand transparent export laws, similar to those of our neighboring countries, in other words:
“A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WITH EUROPEAN COMPETITORS”.
Apart from the limited local market and the restrictive export law, the high labor costs, theunfavorable exchange rate of the Swiss Franc against USD & EURO and the non NATOmembership are major handicaps for the export market as well. Of course, there arealso some very strong points speaking for the Swiss industry: the latest technologies, a highdegree of innovation, excellent quality, on-time delivery and the proverbial reliability.
Another significant and necessary enabler for the domestic industry is Switzerland’s offsetpolicy, the industrial participation (direct and indirect) program in huge armamentprocurements (e.g. Fighter Aircraft replacement). Capable Swiss companies and researchinstitutes get a chance to capture new market domains, to participate in technologytransfer and enter into long-term foreign business relations, exceeding the volume ofcontractual offset obligations. Although, Switzerland’s offset policy offers local companiesmany opportunities, but it does not guarantee a piece of the pie per se.Competitiveness and leading edge technology are key to being awarded.
Last but not least, maintaining a robust and competitive domesticDefence industry assures us independent national security.
