Deeside Newsletter DECEMBER
Dear Deeside Members, Another year and come and almost gone; Deeside has gone from strength to strength with many new members and some great successes. Over the summer our Dressage teams did an amazing job, with 5 members going to the Pony Club Dressage Championships, first time ever Deeside sent a team. Well done girls a fantastic effort for the club. Camp went ahead despite the very late change of venue due to flooding at Auchlishie. Cabin did us proud and all attending members seem to really have a great time. This gave us the confidence to run a shorter October camp which was also very well attended and had a similar weather theme to the first – Rain! As a branch Deeside have continued to offer a varied disciplines and activities, some are going very well while other struggle to get much support. The committee really needs you, the members to let us know which disciplines you are keen to get involved in. Please take time to look at the Pony Club web site www.pcuk.org and see what Pony Club can do and give us some feedback. Over the winter we will hold our rallies at Loanhead and in the Spring we will return to our usual field at Cullerlie Farm Park. We will be outdoors again just as soon as the weather is good enough. The winter rallies will be taught by Calum Macdonald; who is well respected Show jumping Instructor and a variety of others depending on the attendees. We are keen to know who you enjoy teaching you at rallies so again please let us know if you have enjoyed any particular instructors or have suggestions of new Instructors we could try. 2013 should see a number of you ready to take your next Test and we will plan to test E, D and D+ at specific rallies. C and C+ will have scheduled test dates and B and above will be run by Area 1. We will share the dates just as soon as they are planned. Make sure you get all the training you can in for which ever test you hope to take. Merry Christmas and a Happy 2013 to you all! Regards Jane.

RALLIES From Spring to October rallies are ‘All day rallies’ and run from 10.30am to 3.30pm at the Pony Club field, Cullerlie Farm Park. With one or two exceptions when we need to vacate our field. During an all day rally you will ride in the morning and afternoon getting the chance to do flatwork and jumping. Do stable management in preparation for and you will probably have the chance to do games or some other fun activity if you wish. You also get a chance to catch up with all your pals over a picnic lunch. Winter rallies are held indoors and this year will be at Loanhead Equestrian. The indoor rallies are split into groups of similar age and standard depending on the attendees at the rally. The committee tries to send out the times and group members no later than the Thursday before. Sometimes due to bad weather of ice we have to cancel the indoor rallies. This decision is always made with safety in mind and usually due to icy conditions in the car park of the venue. During bad weather it is always worth calling one of the committee before you set off to ensure we are going ahead. To book your place at any rally you need to complete the appropriate Rally Slip and send it with your payment to Jackie Taig at least 7 days before the rally date. Rally slips are emailed out, included in the Newsletters and we hope to make them available via the Branch website soon. Our new Treasurer Janet is also investigating how we can update our system for paying for rallies but until we have that worked out please keep sending cheques with your rally slips. Don’t forget to use your ‘Free Rally Voucher’ you earned by helping with the end of season field clear up! The Christmas Rally will be at Loanhead on 30th December, so dust off your tinsel and festive fancy dress and come along for some fun. This rally is free to all members but please send slips in as usual.
INSTRUCTORS AT RALLIES During 2012 we used a wide range of Instructors at our rallies and camps and they are listed below.
Lucy Bailey Kirsty Blackmore
Dorothy Burnett John Crawford
Alison Fellows Julia Gourlay
Sue Hendry Jane Jeffries
Eilidh Middleton Anne Ratcliffe
Mark Smith Alice Strang Steel
Jackie Taig Jane Valentine
We are keen to use a variety of instructors again during 2013. Please let us know if there is an instructor you are keen for us to use.
INSTRUCTORS LUNCHS AT RALLIES It is a long held tradition that we provide a nice lunch for the Instructors who teach at our branch rallies. Each family takes a turn throughout the year. Lunch doesn’t need to be anything fancy. We usually provide sandwiches or filled rolls, some salad, crisps, fruit and nice piece of cake or something sweet.

TRATHALON AND TETRATHALON ROUND UP FROM DOROTHY Shooting is ongoing at the Burnett Park, Banchory on Tuesday evenings from 5:30pm. On 9th December we have former Pony Club Open Girl Champion Louise Heyler coming to do shooting and running training at the Burnett Park 11am. I am hoping that we will be able to do a monthly session with Louise. Scottish Tetrathlon Winter Series got under way on 3rd November in Aberdeen, as a club we were well represented with some really good results.
Open Girls Rachel Smith was 3rd run, 2nd swim and 2nd overall
Morgan Hartley moved up to Open and was 3rd in swim and 7th overall
Mini Boy Ryan Gauld was 4th shoot, 3rd run 1st swim and 1st overall
Adam Daines competing in only his 2nd Triathlon did very well with 6th shoot,2nd run,5th swim and 5th overall
Mini Girls was a huge class of 24 and Charlotte Clark shot a competition PB of 920 which was only good enough for 4th place, which shows how high the standard is in Mini’s this year, and she finished 7th overall
Page 7
Deeside Newsletter DECEMBER
Freya Hartley finished 9th overall
Katrina Seaton finished 16th overall A few of our members are off to Annan in Dumfriesshire for the 2nd Triathlon on 2nd December and we wish them all good luck. The winter Postal shoot is now under way and once again we have a few members taking part. This competition comprises of shooting three targets per month from Oct to Feb. The children have been put into leagues depending on their average shoot and scores are accumulated and an average taken to decided placings. We once again ran a very successful Triathlon competition at the Burnett Park and Banchory Swimming Pool, although numbers were low we had lots of first timers and the day proved an ideal start for them. Deeside results are below:
Open Boy: 1st Tom Robertson
Mini Boys: 1st Ryan Gauld 2nd Ben Mathews 3rd Adam Daines
Mini Mini Girls: 3rd Milly Pearson 4th Emmy Daines
Intro: 2nd Zara Gauld Any member interested in finding out more about Tri/Tetrathlon contact Dorothy Burnett or Mary Robertson
DEESIDE PONY CLUB OPEN TEAM SHOW JUMPING REPORT Deeside Pony Club held their re-scheduled Open Team Show Jumping at Loanhead Equestrian Centre on Saturday 17th November, and this time the weather was fine, no snow! Due to the moved date there Weren’t so many teams competing, although it was still a busy day. Those who came all went home with a rosette, many also with a prize or two! We are fortunate to have had sponsorship from several local companies; many thanks to:

GAMES UPDATE After what seemed a promising start to the 2012 Games season with many members and their parents keen to get a games team together and go to some of the bigger occasions. We unfortunately find that Games is again low on our members list of pony related activities. We are therefore taking a planned break and will resume Games training in the spring if we have enough interest. Thank you to Fiona, Pam and Lucy for all their effort this year.
DEESIDERS OUT and ABOUT This feature is designed to bring you news of things our Branch members have been up to with their horses outside of the usual club activity. We are really keen to hear from any of you so we can include you in the next newsletter.
Carmen and Bubbles represented Scotland at the British Young Riders Dressage (BYRDS) Home International held at Bishop Burton in the October holiday. They competed at medium level and won the overall pony medium championships.
Carmen was also recently presented with the BYRDS, A squad trophy by Ruth Edge which is the third consecutive year that she has won this.
Well done Carmen!
