25TH ANNIVERSARYHarry Gill epitomized STMA

members camaraderieThe late Harry Gill along with George Toma Dick Ericson and the late Dr WIlliam Daniel founded the Sports Turf Managers Association in 1981These men believed that sports turf could be improved through the sharing of knowledge and the exchange of ideas between goundskeepers

Mike Schiller former STMA president and1993 recipient of the Harry C Gill MemorialAward was a good friend of Harrys Hewas a great storyteller and he loved to pullpractical jokes He loved to hear peoplelaugh especially if it was at his intended tar-get I was lucky enough to share a roomwith Harry at the conferences for almost 10years Often I was the subject of his jokesand it made everyone laugh and it brought atwinkle to Harrys eye and that always madefor a good time Schiller says

Mike Schiller lett with STMA founder the lateHarry Gill at Milwaukees County Stadium in 1982

STMA braintrust at the 1985 meeting in SanFrancisco (from left) Dale Sandin Orange Bowl DrKent Kurtz Cal Poly Melissa (last name unknown)the STMAs first secretary Tom Lujan SteveWightman then with Broncos and now with theChargers and Mike Schiller Lujan took over MileHigh Stadium duties when Wightman went west

Harry loved people he loved growinggrass and he loved the idea of sports fieldmanagers sharing ideas In 1982 hisBrewers lost in the World Series but thememento Harry gave my wife and I is atreasure that reminds me of one of thenicest people I have ever known

We made regular trips to CountyStadium and he would take my kids for

50 February 2006

rides on his gaif cart Although they are alladults now they stiil talk about and treasurethe times we got to visit Grarnps as mykids called him I did too just to aggravatehim a little Schiller says

Friendships and lasting memories iswhat makes STMA so special

Speaking on his STMA experiencesSchiller says Over the past 25 years somany new and innovative ideas have comeforth from this industry whether it was anoutlandish idea that worked once and oth-ers tried it or a plant being propagated forresistance or a certain growth habit or anew piece of machinery [invented]

I have learned so much at the sessionsand trade shows our vendors are great eou-

cators It has been 25 years of knowledgegrowth for me The best thing to come fromthis association beyond education are thefriendships that you make they are priceless

Tom Burns director of grounds forTexas Ranger Baseball and a veteranSTMA member says The most valuablething that I have come by through STMA isthe people who make up the organizationI have never been exposed to a group thatis as willing to help solve a problem be itpersona or professional

When I first started in this businesseveryone held onto their secrets That isnot the case any more I know that I wouldnot be where I am at in my career if it wasnot for the people who took the time tohelp me along the way The people of STMAare quite good at giving back to the indus-try and I think that is their best qualityBurns says

Dale Getz CSFM and US sports fieldsand grounds sales manager for The TaroCompany (and formerly a turf manager atNotre Dame) says Without a doubt themost valuable thing from my membershiphas been the reretronstuos I have formedthroughout the years I have been associat-ed with the STMA Getz adds that he also

greatly values becoming a Certified SportsField Manager

Without a doubt the most valuable partof my STMA membership has been the net-working opportunities with other membersfrom all categories throughout the countryMany management procedures I now employhave come from ideas and methods of otherSTMA members The educational opportuni-ties afforded by an STMA membership aresecond to none and run a close second tonetworking for me says Steve Wightmanstadium turf manager for OuarcornrnStadium in San Diego

Another influential and legendary turfman was the late Dr Fred Grau A greatfriend of turf managers Dr Grau was thefirst turf extension agronomist (at PennState) in the US STMA Historian Dr KentKurtz reports that Dr Henry Indyk whopassed away last year started the Dr FredGrau Scholarship with funds left over fromthe National Sports Turf Council after it wasdisbanded subsequent to Graus death

STMA annually awards a student scholar-ship in Dr Graus name Dr Kurtz says thisscholarship fund is running out of moneysince it is not endowed He encourages allSTMA professional and commercial mem-

bers to con-tribute to thisworthwhile fundto help futureSTMA leaderswith their schoolexpenses now bullAll photos courtesy

Harry loved people he loved growinggrass and he loved the idea of sports fieldmanagers sharing ideas In 1982 hisBrewers lost in the World Series but thememento Harry gave my wife and I is atreasure that reminds me of one of thenicest people I have ever known
