Chairman’s CommentsWelcome to what will be a much better year than last year! It is nice to see the progress of people’s restorations, both in the magazine and on Facebook. On a personal note, my early car is all welded up and Craig has made a �rm promise to have it back to me in the spring as the garage warms up. At my age that’s a ‘given’! Can I welcome all new members to these hallowed pages, in particular Aria who is most certainly our youngest member at 10 weeks old! (She is my �rst grandchild and I am getting in early because her wonderful Dad is a Porsche fan). Club rules state they must only have an interest and she has looked at a number of Cortinas online and had her �rst picture with me in my Cortina �eece, and she smiled!

Can I also take the opportunity to thank Maggie for her sterling work on the magazine over the last few years and her work in the background on other projects, which she has thrown herself into. She has been like a little ball of energy running around and injecting us with her ideas and enthusiasm and the committee wish her well with her new projects. It now gives me pleasure in welcoming back a former editor Tony who has had personal problems, but they are all sorted and he has resolved to take over from Maggie again. Welcome back Tony (the next mag is in his hands). I look forward to a smooth handover.

That’s me done with announcements, I hope Xmas was allowed and ok and I look forward to seeing many of you at the national this year.

Editor’s CornerHappy new year, everyone! Here’s hoping that 2021 is better for us all, and that we can �nally kick the virus into touch.

The start of the new year means that my time as editor has come to an end. I can’t believe that my �rst magazine was back in November 2017! Since then, I’ve put together 19 more magazines (including this one) and I honestly don’t know where the time has gone. Members of this club have always been so incredibly helpful and forthcoming with articles and pictures to be included, and I want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you. Without you, the magazine would be empty, and my job would have been a whole lot harder. I also want to thank everyone who is a member of our Facebook page for engaging with us, helping fellow members/enthusiasts with their questions, and for getting so involved in our virtual National last year.

Most of all, I would like to thank our fantastic committee for being so welcoming, supportive and just generally lovely human beings. I loved seeing you all at our meetings and you have always been open to trying new ideas, especially our now very successful social media outlets. I’ll miss seeing you all (and your dogs!).

Lastly, I want to wish Tony good luck! I know you’re looking forward to working with your son on the magazine and I hope that you enjoy your time as editor.

That’s everything from me. I hope that 2021 brings you all much happiness and thank you again for being so brilliant.

Guess Who’s Back!

Hi everyone, just a short paragraph to (re) introduce myself to you all. My name is Tony Harding and I will be taking over as Editor of the club magazine from the March issue.

You may remember that I previously held the position from 2013 to 2016. In the interim I have mostly been battling cancer but, following a heavy course of chemotherapy this year, I am con�dent I have �nally won the battle. A check will have been done early January so by the time you read this I’ll be in the clear.

This time around my son Kasey will be helping as he is �nishing school in 2021 and heading for a career in Art and Design. I’ll ensure there’s no mention of Subarus or F1 so don’t worry.

My Cortina is still tucked up in the garage with zero progress having been made but several new parts have been acquired for the project which I will let you know about as time permits.

I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the magazine again and I hope you all enjoy it. Happy Christmas and here’s to 2021.

This is my new Cortina, a 1966 Mk1 1500 GT export bought in June 2020. It comes from the South East of France and it’s now located between Tours and Angers.After some upgrading (new stainless-steel exhaust, fuel tank and headlights), everything works perfectly and it’s very pleasant to drive!

High �ve! (Well, 39’s really) Yeah-no (as the kids say). Losing my marbles, you’re asking? Well, probably yes but there is another clue in the �rst line. Right, where were we? Oh yes, we’re there at long last and the jobs a good ‘un! Well, nearly. Let me explain…

The car is now on the ground supported by £1,000 worth of tyres and she’s looking good. It’s got a few niggles but hey, what’s a 56-year-old girl going to look like? “Like new”, my mate Mike says. I reply, “yeah like new as a 56-year-old car was 56 years ago, and not a patch on today’s motors, but that’s all the fun of these restorations.”

When we left you in saga 15, I’m sorry to say that our photos got missed out so we are whisking them o� some more for you to view and drool over. In the last saga I had not started the engine or added any �uids. This is now all done, with the expectation of my �tting of seals, pipes etc., not holding true to form, so I’m diving

under the car inspecting for any leaks. I started with the brakes and with my dear wife, “up & down” was shouted to each other for the next two hours into the early evening silence (what the neighbours were thinking was anybody’s guess). This was completed with no leaks and a bit of back pressure on the pedal felt really good.It was then onto the water system – one weep from the thermostat housing after a week was not an issue in anybody’s book. Next was the steering box – hoorah no leaks. (I was questioning my ability on this one when I whacked the seals in two years ago with a rubber

mallet). We then �lled the di� using Redline shock oil to �nd one little drip from one of the bottom nuts I

hadn’t quite tightened up enough - tightened up and job done! Oil then went in the engine and yes, I did forget to �ll the oil �tter canister so that gave me a problem on start-up

– but no leaks on this one.Fingers crossed and the petrol went in (only a couple of gallons) as I wasn’t sure if the sender unit would hold out, it did and pipe work to carbs behaved themselves.

Then it was time for the big one…ENGINE STARTING. Wow was I bricking it when it came to this bit, I think I was more nervous about this than any driving test or asking my father in-law for my wife’s hand in marriage. But why did I panic so much? A few cranks of the old girl (original engine and head) she �red into life. With a couple of small adjustments, the engine sounded like music to my pokey out ears. (to whiz back to the start-up, I did

take the plugs out and �lled the oil canister up to gain oil pressure �rst).

Now I know what all the buzz is about with a Consul Cortina

Lotus. That soundtrack is not a patch on my MK2 Lotus with a silly exhaust looking box plonked on the cam cover. The other thing I’d like to mention – when was there ever a MK1 Lotus Cortina? There wasn’t. It’s Consul Cortina developed by Lotus and

yes, there is a MK2 Cortina as well so mine is not a MK1 and I’m sticking with that.

My next task was to contact the DVLA to get SGS to inspect the vehicle so they can issue my original registration document. If I do write about this, I will be very rude so I’m keeping my lips tightly sealed, as I think everybody out there knows what pulling teeth without anaesthetic is like.

So, back to the car. It started, I pumped the brakes a few times and with a bit of adjustment to the back drums – she’s really wanting to go! Clutch in, garage doors open, engine revving like an AC/DC track,

I trundle out of the garage. She’s moving for the �rst time in 42 years! A little burst of the throttle and I’m at the end of the drive, bugger that felt good. I fumble with the gear stick for reverse, clunk, she went in and now we’re going backwards with no scraping, clunking or whines (god I’m so happy). This went on for the next two hours back and forth. This is as, I quote, ‘sex on a stick’. I love it.With that thought in your minds, wait till saga 17.

The car is a 1966, US-market GT that was sold new in Southern California. Over the years, the car made its way up the US west coast, to the San Francisco Bay Area, to Washington State, and eventually to British Colombia, Canada.

I bought the car about 3-4 years ago, and brought it all the way back to Southern California. One of the previous owners had kept the original license plates, and he sent those to me, so they were reunited with the car after something like 20-25 years.

The car is basically standard, except the suspension is lowered, and it’s wearing Lotus Cortina wheels, and has a Lotus close-ratio gear cluster in the transmission.

I currently have 5 Mk1 Cortinas, and I’ve owned one of them for 25 years. My 6-year-old son and I regularly practice some ‘social distancing’ by taking

the car up into the mountains east of San Diego. We often drive for 100-150 miles at a time, up to 6,000 ft elevation.

The �rst picture below shows the car parked along the US/Mexico border, on Historic Route 80, which used to span the entire country, before the Interstate highway system was completed in the early-60’s.

Ever since I was young lad, I have had a thing about Cortinas. Although I could drive from about the age of 14, when I was 17 in 1964 my parents thought I should have a few driving lessons from a school, and guess what – the driving school car was a Cortina, and so easy to drive compared to my father’s Ford Zephyr. I passed �rst time of course.

When I left school, as an impoverished student I got a job in one of the Ford main dealers in Edinburgh, Cochrane’s Garage, working on petrol pumps in the evenings and doing a bit of car cleaning at weekends. In my holidays I even got to deliver a few new cars to customers, mainly company reps, and of course, most were Cortinas – I was in heaven! Even during term time, I would get to pick up a car the evening before, go to my �rst lecture the next morning, rolling up in ‘my’ brand new Cortina, then do the delivery in the afternoon.

In 1966 a close friend (and fellow petrol head) inherited a 1964 Humber Sceptre when his father died. He was not desperately keen on the Sceptre, nice motor though it was, so he decided to trade it in for a new Cortina GT in ermine white. He could not get a 2 door even in those days, and ended up settling for a 4 door – what a car! This was what got me ultimately hooked!

About the same time, I got my own �rst car, a hideously horrible 1954 Standard 8, which I managed to put up with for 3 months before selling it to another friend who promptly broke it. A series of cars, varying from OK to total rubbish followed, but when I got my �rst job as a land surveyor in 1969, I needed something reliable and reasonably spacious. I bought a 105E Anglia which was a bit on the small side, but adequate. Then, one day, while passing one of the more dubious second-hand car dealers in Edinburgh I spied a beautiful gleaming Mk1 Cortina Super in Goodwood Green, XCS 271 – £250. A test drive, a bit of negotiation and borrowing a

few quid from the folks later, the deal was done – I got £120 for the Anglia and the ‘tina was mine. In the 2 years that followed that car was overloaded, thrashed, driven across �elds, covered thousands of miles and never missed a beat (occasional problems starting on below zero mornings). Eventually the body seams started to leak and I decided before it deteriorated too much the time was right to pass it on, and sold it for the same money as I had paid for it - £250.

So, fast forward to the late seventies. In the meantime, my daily drivers had progressed to things altogether more modern. I had moved north to Inverness and amazingly enough I found that my neighbour, Roddie, was equally as petrol-headed as me and we did all the car projects together from then (1973) up to the present day. I certainly couldn’t have done half the things with cars without Roddie’s help. We had got heavily involved in road and special stage rallying and had decided to build a special stage car and there was no doubt what we wanted – a Mk1 of course! About that time Mk1s could be had for pennies as they had descended into the realms of bangerland. I spotted a nice looking Mk1 2 door Super in Alpina Green with a price ticket of £150 on it outside someone’s house. Looked just what we were after and had a bit of MOT left and had a nice registration BST111C. So, £150 lighter, we had the basis for the rally car.

The car was stripped to a bare shell, had much welding done and was resprayed in white with a red stripe. A rack and pinion steering set-up adapted from an Escort was �tted. A Capri Atlas axle with a 4.4 di� (I think), and a 1600 cross�ow engine on twin Dellortos and 2000E box completed the mechanicals. Roll cage, full harness belts, and all the required safety gear was added. The car went pretty well and handled well too. Its �rst outing in the 1982 Snowman Rally was a disaster. We soon learned that forest rallying is pretty hard on a car and basically the car fell apart! Many improvements were carried out – much more strengthening inserted into the shell and she was ready to go. The 1983 event was equally disastrous for a very di�erent reason – the car stood up magni�cently, but we ran out of petrol on the last stage! The next

year was the end of BST – it was written o� comprehensively in a forest in Morayshire and I could no longer a�ord to repair it.

About that time, I had gone into an unfortunate business partnership and lost a lot of money so I had to sell my daily driver and look for something much cheaper. It just so happened there was a 1964 Mk1 2 door �eet model AGN21B lying in a driveway a few streets away from me. Tentatively I approached the owner to see if they would sell. It was an old woman in her eighties who no longer drove and the car had belonged to her late husband. It looked pretty scru�y but drove well and had a couple of months test left. So, £100 did the deal and at least I had a set of wheels.

The car was not in the best of shape – a few days after putting it on the road one of the front spring pans gave way leading to major collapse on that side. A pair of struts later it was back on the road, but then disaster! One night coming home from work a car shot out of a side road straight into the side of the ‘tina. The car in question was a brand-new Fiat Uno which had just been picked up from the dealer. The Fiat was completely �attened at the front, but my car only su�ered a bent door pillar and a severely bashed door. The insurance company wrote the car o� and gave me £70, plus salvage. I manage to source a second-hand door, got the pillar straightened and a respray all for £100. Shortly after, as my �nancial situation improved, I got a more modern daily driver, but hung on to the Cortina for a while afterwards for my wife to use. I eventually sold it for £500 to a young lad who was going to do all sorts of wonderful things to it – I never saw it again.

In the next few years another 3 Cortinas came and went. A 1966 4 door with a Pinto 2 litre engine which was bought to do road navigation rallies. It went like stink but was a pretty rubbish car otherwise.

A nice red 4 door GT ASK710C co-owned with Roddie, which blew the top o� one of the pistons during a road rally, but otherwise pretty good. We entered

That was in the early nineties. Between then and 2018 I had various classics, some good, some not so good, but never another Mk1. By 2018 I had unfortunately become disabled due to a spinal disease, and could no longer get into the fabulous Capri V8 that I had at the time, so it was sold. I was no longer allowed to drive

a manual car but started looking around for something more accessible that I could be driven about in. I naturally thought Cortina Mk1. Lotus would be fantastic but so were prices, then I thought a nice GT, but shuddered at the prices being asked for even a 4 door! One day my neighbour said to me “have you seen the Mk1 Cortina for sale in Inverness on Gumtree?” I almost choked! I contacted the seller – to cut a long story short, did the deal and I had my Cortina – a 1966 4 door Super in Alpina green. It had been semi-restored but needed some �nishing, reg. no. CSE383D, a fairly local car too. It had spent most of its life in Orkney and Shetland, so mileage was low. It needed a new petrol tank, exhaust, radiator, front springs and struts, new front bushes, rear springs and some electrical work. It turns out the seller also owned ASK710C, the GT that I used to co-own! I managed one tour in CSE in 2019 before the dreaded Covid shut the world down in 2020, but it’s in the garage ready to roll at the �rst opportunity.

So, that’s my a�air with Mk1 Cortinas – loved them all, some more than others. I don’t suppose I’ll have another…but if a nice Crayford Convertible came along, I might just be tempted.

Chapter 1: In the Beginning...

So, where to begin with the story of our ‘65 Estate known as a�ectionately as “Bertha”? Well, like all good stories, let’s start at the beginning...

The car was built in Dagenham in October 1965 to ‘65 specs. On the 13th January 1966 the car was purchased by its �rst owners from Doe Motors Limited in Maldon, Essex. A few weeks later on the 26th January, it was registered and thus started the journeys of OPU546D.

The Faircloughs (the �rst owners) by all accounts from my family and their children (whom I met after their parents had passed away) were a lovely couple who cared for their Cortina well. During their tenure the car was sadly hit by a Steam Roller on the driver’s side rear door and also sustained damage to the passenger wing, so a pattern part was �tted. Thanks to the e�ort

they took to get the paint to match, it was never evident that the car had been damaged. To quote my Mother, “to them she was more than just a car and they would never put her to trash”.

Sadly, in 1984, the couple passed away and their nephew acquired the car and after a short while he chose to sell it on, as he needed the money to go to college. At this point in time my parents were living in the same street as the Faircloughs and had admired the car from afar, and also the care the Faircloughs gave to it. So, when their nephew decided to sell it on, my father jumped at the chance and purchased it from him in June 1984 for just £400. For

the next 6 years Bertha had many adventures as the family car and became part of our life.

In March 1985, having already amassed 45,918 miles, it was decided an engine upgrade was needed. So, with thanks to J.D. Robertson & Co. of Colchester, the old 1200 engine which was leaking badly was taken out and replaced by a 1500 engine, along with a fresh clutch plate and cover, all for the small cost of £264. The 1500 engine

was acquired by my Father from a work colleague of his just for £25. It was during my childhood that the car got named Bertha, as it was after the title character of a children’s television show (of the same name) which featured a green factory machine, with a mind of its own. The

show debuted in September 1985.

In 1986 my parents and Bertha were extras in the tra�c scene for the �lm The Fourth Protocol, which was �lmed o� Old Rectory Lane, Chelmsford between 18th-19th June 1986. Whilst they were there, the �lm crew asked if they could borrow the car and they took it for a few test drives up and down the yet to be opened dual carriageway (and up and down the grass verge as well). My Father said Bertha never

ran the same after that.

One evening a couple of years later, whilst my Father was on a Sunday night shift at the railway station at Colchester North, he parked Bertha up and went on shift. When he �nished at 6am the next day, he went to collect the car but found out it had

been stolen!My father sadly had to get a lift home and it was not until the next day that he got a call from Clacton Police station, which was 20 miles away, to say they’d found Bertha.Sadly, it was easy for the thieves to take the car because at that point the driver’s door lock had worn and

could be opened easily without a key, and the ignition barrel was worn too. The thieves removed the child seat from the rear and went on a joy ride it seems.

According to my Father, the Police told him “it was fairly easy to �nd, as it was a rare car”. Even back then in the late 1980s there were few Mk1 Estates in our area. Sadly, my Father lost a nice country & western cassette mix tape in the process!

In 1990 we visited the Colchester Institute car show where they let us in as “late entry”. We were parked next to many shiny vehicles but alas, Bertha was showing her age and needed repairs. So, later that year it was decided she would go in to the garage for a “rest” and it would be another 7 years before she would see the light of day.

Having read Roger Walmsley’s article in the November magazine, and as the owner of a Cortina GT, I thought I might add my observations to the discussion. Firstly, as to how rare GTs are, I think one has to take the �gures on howmanyleft.co.uk with a pretty large pinch of salt. The data they are based on, from the DVLA, is notoriously unreliable. I recall the late-lamented Roger Raisey commenting many years ago that not all GTs are correctly identi�ed as such in the logbook, and mine is a case in point. DGT 591C is an export-spec GT, absolutely genuine (I’ve owned it since 1976) with the correct spec, BA78 chassis no, etc. However, the original green logbook, which I have, identi�es it simply as a ‘Cortina’, and the modern V5 lists it as a Super! The latter error may have arisen as export - spec GTs have Super pattern trim, but whatever the case, there is at least one more GT than listed on the website. I can, however, easily believe that there are more Lotuses extant, the obvious result of their greater value over the years making preservation (or fakery?) likelier. Sheer rarity, though, isn’t the only factor in the value of classic cars and perceived

desirability is the major reason for the crazy prices those pesky Escorts fetch. Regarding Ford’s marketing of the GT, I was a car-mad teenager (only just) when the model was announced, and I remember being impressed by the rev counter binnacle on the steering column, the extra gauges, and the rear quarter badges. The original Escort Twin-Cam, a very desirable vehicle these days, had no distinguishing features, and only came in white. I seem to remember that go-faster stripes only began to be the thing in the early ‘70s. Where I very much agree with Roger is on the merits of the model, quick enough to keep up with modern tra�c, and easily tweakable if that’s your thing. DGT and I have been to many car shows over the years, and I’ve lost track of the number of times people have said to me, ‘I bet you wish that was a Lotus’. I don’t. Barry Freedman

BACKCHATThere are 55 million car users in the UK. 41 million drivers, plus their passengers, and yet we all bow to whatever is coming along. We may not be driving anything with a combustion engine by 2035, with di�erent political parties suggesting di�erent dates, just to be di�erent. Hey ho. Public transport is not going to recover anytime soon so it will be interesting to see what they all do!On a more upbeat note, there is now some ‘retarding’ of that �ight to take away lanes and pass them to cyclists. This has been as a result of feedback from motorists via several ‘routes’ who are getting angry with this. It has also had a knock-on e�ect for ambulances trying to get to the scene of an accident as cars couldn’t get out of the way to let them through.Lastly, as we seem to be heading for electricity, has anyone considered this yet? I saw one had been done in USA.Keep going! Regards Mike

Ending 2020 on a highFor those of you who buy Classic Ford magazine, and if you’re on our Facebook page too, you might have noticed that our club won Club of the Year alongside the MK2 Cortina Owner’s Club and the Anglia 105E Club, in their Classic Ford Awards! We couldn’t be happier about this! Lots and lots of hard work went into organising our virtual National with our friends at the other clubs, and it wouldn’t have been nearly as successful if it wasn’t for all of the lovely members that got involved.

GT that is looking for a good homeI have a 1965 GT that is looking for a good home. Brie�y, the car has

been stored for 40-ish years, the arch-lines have been modi�ed with the fronts removed. The strut tops have been modi�ed and the car currently

has VW struts installed just to keep it o� the ground. The rest of the car, apart from cosmetic exterior, is very good and solid. I had a look

previously just before we were to install a roll cage and there are some perforations about the front transverse box section in the cabin, and also

at the base of the rear damper turrets. We have a lot of parts and trim that I would like to go with the car. The person who takes the car should take all spares too please. A trailer and a van for car/parts will probably
