Welcome to the Autumn/Winter season atDéda with another fantastic programme

of performances, classes and visual art.

All eyes will be on the UK next year with theLondon 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of the countdown, Déda has beenworking with a stellar team of artists on GamesTime, funded by Legacy Trust UK. For moreinformation, and for details of when we’ll bepresenting this spectacular outdoor performancein Derby, visit www.gamestime.org.uk

We’re proud to once again be involved with theDerby Festé – now in its fifth year! Within theusual packed programme we’re especiallypleased to welcome back Spanish street artscompany Sarruga. They previously broughtDragons and Insects to the streets of Derby, andthis year they will transform the city into anunderwater wonderland, populated by giantilluminated fish and creatures from the deep.

Another welcome return comes from Derby’sown Maison Foo. They were Resident Artists onthe Déda|Artist scheme when they createdMemoirs of a Biscuit Tin, which went on to be thesmash hit of the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival,so it will be a treat to see this poignant topsy-turvy tale for adults back in Derby as part of anational tour.

Dance performance highlights this seasoninclude Stephanie Schober with her strikingnew music and dance piece Traffic and thereturn of the energetic and ever-popularTavaziva Dance Company. And in the run-up to Christmas, we have two fantastic shows for families, with 3D Derby Deaf Drama’s A Christmas Carol and John Hegley’s AnimalAlphaboat.

As usual we have been busy lining up an arrayof class and workshop activities for you andyour family to participate in. We have made a few changes to our class programme, introducing Streetdance, Breakbeatz andBallet for younger children on Saturdays. We’re also introducing a new urban danceperformance company called Reactor, for that Got To Dance experience. For adults we’ve divided up our programme into four easy to follow categories: Styles andTechniques, Health and Well-Being, SocialDancing and Urban.

For all the information about Déda’sperformances, classes and participationactivities, visit our website atwww.deda.uk.com.

We hope to see you at Déda again very soon.

Kate SmithGallery Déda

Kate’s current body of work began in 2002and deals with the marks and residues weleave behind as we move through spaces, and investigates drawing as an expression of gesture, mark, imprint and trace.

The work reveals an individual movingthrough space and explores the differencesbetween marks consciously made, and those which imply the presence of another.

The exhibition concentrates on ‘reveal’drawings, marks of movement created bywax applied to hands and feet, exposed withpencil. Alongside, are large drawings ofunconscious scribbles and scrawlspainstakingly recreated with pencil andballpoint pen.

Barbara BristowGallery Déda

Inspired by science, Barbara is fascinated by how chance and uncertainty can lead her to find new images. She starts by makingspontaneous arbitrary marks using a processof dripping, throwing and pouring the paint as well as tilting and shaking the canvas. Using her intuition to add to or dilute themedium, startling images emerge.

This experimental way of working produces a combination of simply deceptive images and complex original forms.

Alysn Midgelow-MarsdenCUBE café|bar

Alysn works primarily in copper, bronze, stainless steel and pewter metals with wovenmetal fabrics. She alters the original surface byburnishing, texturing, printing, patterning andpatinating and by using textile and embroiderytechniques.

The works are composed of evocative patterns, forms and figures articulated with complex, undulating, knotted and interwoven designsand text. Patterns emerge slowly as the work is viewed resulting in warm harmonies through subtly gentle, yet obsessive mazes. The finished works are at once personal, disconcerting and fascinating.
