Understanding the Myth of High Growth FirmsThe Theory of the Greater Fool

In this volume, the authors challenge some long held assumptions about entrepreneurial firms held by academics, public policy makers, investors and even entrepreneurs themselves. The first is assumption is that growth is what really differenti-ates an entrepreneurial firm from a small business. The second is that growth is always good. Third, if growth is rapid, and/or high growth, it is even bet-ter. Drawing from a fresh review of the literature, their own primary research and experience in entrepreneurial ventures, the authors argue that the relationship between growth and firm perfor-mance is, in fact, inconclusive.

Features 7 Challenges conventional biases in research, practice, and policymaking concerning the cor-relations among business growth, innovation, and profitability 7 Considers the strategic, financial, and organizational issues associated with generat-ing and sustaining business growth 7 Includes case examples from such industries as airlines, accounting, biotechnology, IT, and wineries

Decision-Making in Private Equity FirmsAn Empirical Study of Determinants and Rules

The decisions of private equity firms affect the de-velopment of industries and national economies, yet little is known about how these decisions are made. Mark Broere uses proprietary survey data from 136 private equity firms (venture capital and buyout) located in the US, Canada, and Europe to explore determinants and rules of their decision-making. The results exhibit new facts about their objectives, success measures, decision criteria, exit decision power and rules. A discussion in light of existing financial theory highlights, e.g. the role of reputation, and potential pitfalls in the decision-making of practitioners. The author suggests that private equity firms might improve their perfor-mance by a more careful choice of decision rules and criteria and by a more consistent application of these across varying decision types.

Mathematical and Computational Modeling of TonalityTheory and Applications

From the Preface: Blending ideas from operations research, music psychology, music theory, and cognitive science, this book aims to tell a coherent story of how tonality pervades our experience, and hence our models, of music. The story is told through the developmental stages of the Spiral Array model for tonality, a geometric model de-signed to incorporate and represent principles of tonal cognition, thereby lending itself to practical applications of tonal recognition, segmentation, and visualization. Mathematically speaking, the coils that make up the Spiral Array model are in effect helices, a spiral referring to a curve emanat-ing from a central point.

Features 7 First book to connect mathematical representa-tions of music with computational approaches to problem solving 7 Presents author’s Spiral Array geometric model for tonality 7 Author is known worldwide and uniquely qualified as both concert pianist and PhD in Operations Research

Contents Tonality.- An Abbreviated Survey.- The Spiral Array.- The CEG Algorithm (Part I).- The CEG Algorithm (Part II): Validation.- Determining Key Boundaries.- Argus Segmentation Method.- Real-Time Pitch Spelling.- MuSA.RT.- Visible Humor.- Sensitivity Analysis.- Model Calibration.- CEG Key Finding: Bach’s WTC book I.

Collaboration with Potential Users for Discontinuous InnovationExperimental Research on User Creativity

Creativity and innovation are important drivers of economic welfare and growth in contemporary societies. Collaborating with and learning from users in the early phase of the innovation process has been considered a successful approach to stimulate those creative sparks for organizations. However, the idea of users as innovators has also invoked critical responses especially in the context of innovations that are discontinuous to dominant designs. Martin Hewing and co-author Katharina Hölzle explore the potential that can arise through collaboration with potential users who are not yet users. Those users at the peripheries are perceived to contribute more novel information, by which they better reflect shifts in needs and behavior than current users at the center.

Earnings Accruals and Real Activities Management around Initial Public OfferingsEvidence from Specific Industries

The beginning of the new millennium was charac-terized by company scandals in accounting around the world. A transparent and fair presentation of financial statements is beneficial for capital market participants. Especially around initial public of-ferings different incentives of these players exist to influence financial statements in diverse aspects. Therefore, studies of earnings management try to identify abnormal behavior. Peter Ising covers ad-ditional aspects to shed light on substantial drivers of discretionary reporting behavior around going public. Factors like influence on real activities, industry affiliation, and specific years in the IPO process add further insight to this theoretical and practical topic. The dependence on these factors is high and confirms that company specifics are important for interpretation of financial results.

National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and SwedenIn the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveil-lance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capi-tal, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in to-day’s knowledge economy. The authors—pioneers in the field—present extensive data and a rigorous conceptual framework to analyze the connec-tions between the global financial crisis and NIC development.

Governance and Performance of Water Utility FirmsIn Italy, the debate about the reform process, that has involved the water sector for several years, cannot be considered concluded. It seems exclusively ideological and often it does not consider the business administration perspective, which certainly could make a contribution to the solution of different problems. Politicians and researchers, for example, show very little interest for the economic and financial performance of water utility firms, focusing almost exclusively on the different ways for providing the services or on the ownership structure. This work analyzes the variables characterizing the outsourcing process in the water sector. It also explores the connection of such variables with the performance of companies and local government authorities involved in the delivery process. Subsequently, the work explains the results of an exploratory analysis of different cases in the international context, making also a comparison about the performance. Lastly, the work verifies the existence of some best practices and evaluates the adaptability of these best prac-tices in the Italian context.

Features 7 Analyzes recent and undeveloped is-sues 7 Provides a theoretical model for the management of integrated water services 7 In-cludes a case study conducted on a sample of 39 mono-service Italian water operators compared to a presence of about 115 foster water companies

Energy and Environmental Concerns and Opportunities in Saudi ArabiaThe vast oil resources in Saudi Arabia have for decades encouraged a generous system of oil subsidies, making the Kingdom one of the leading countries in the world with the cheapest domestic price of oil. Such subsidies have, however, encour-aged inefficient utilization of oil, which is largely consumed in the power, water and transportation sectors, contributing substantially to CO2 emis-sion in the country. These problems are exacer-bated by demographic dynamics, urbanization, changes in income and consumption patterns, and industrialization.

Features 7 Analyzes the key energy and environmental challenges confronting Saudi Arabia 7 Investi-gates what incentive structures the Saudi govern-ment must put in place to attract private sector investments in clean energy technologies in the region 7 Analyzes the opportunity cost of do-mestic oil consumption in Saudi Arabia, and how might this impact on the Kingdom’s future energy security and government revenue

Issues in Supply Chain Scheduling and ContractingChristian A. Ullrich investigates the optimization potential of integrated supply chain scheduling approaches. Considering a company-internal sup-ply chain, the author´s first research question is whether the results of integrating machine sched-uling and vehicle routing are significantly better than those of classic decomposition approaches which break down the overall problem and solve the subproblems successively. The scope is then broadened to include the machine and trans-portation scheduling problems of two and more companies at consecutive supply chain stages. The last part of this dissertation addresses supply chain contracting issues.

On Collective Goods, Voluntary Contributions, and FundraisingAlexander von Kotzebue investigates the interde-pendency of charitable giving, fundraising, and governmental intervention. His study comprises a literature survey, a model of the donor-fundraiser relation, and finally, an econometric analysis of the impact of fundraising on giving behaviour. The survey introduces theoretical approaches to donor motivation, groups them according to their central assumptions, and assesses their empiri-cal relevance. The theoretical analysis takes for granted that fundraising is an integral part of the giving process, and models the potential conflict concerning the amount of fundraising exerted. Fundraising typically displays an ambiguous effect on donor utility. The empirical analysis employs two extensive datasets to investigate this complex donor-fundraiser relation, while establishing a convincing link of donor-level data to non-profit financial data.

The Heterogeneity Link of the Welfare State and RedistributionEthnic Heterogeneity, Welfare State Policies, Poverty, and Inequality in High Income Countries

This book situates ethnic heterogeneity in the larger discussion of the welfare state and its re-distributive outcomes, poverty and inequality. By using comprehensive, longitudinal data covering 1980 to 2010 from 17 high income countries, this analysis helps achieve a major milestone in com-parative welfare state research both conceptually and methodologically. Conceptually, it elevates the relevance of growing ethnic heterogeneity in thinking about how politics and economics of the welfare state operate, collectively impacting the magnitudes of poverty and inequality.

Features 7 Analyzes of the relevance of population hetero-geneity in determining variations in welfare state policies as well as inequality and poverty 7 Pres-ents integrative analysis of how heterogeneity may feed into inequality and poverty directly through low socioeconomic status of minorities 7 Inves-tigates the central roles of immigration in deter-mining welfare state policies
