I finish my work for the last edition of 2011 magazine and sign out for the day, with a lot of excitement and fulfillment within. It has been a successful annual completion of tulip. All I can look back at the year gone by and see are happiness that we shared with people of Hyderabad and how tulip had won accolades of many. I wish all the readers – cheerful Christmas and a very happy new Year.

An ec-static Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that he is grandfather to the cut-est baby girl, while first-time dad Abhishek tweeted, ‘It’s a Girl.’ Ash was accompanied to the hospital by her parents Vrinda and Krish-naraj Rai, brother Aditya, husband Abhishek and in-laws - Amitabh, Jaya and shweta nanda. earlier this year in June, the news of Ash’s pregnancy was broken by Amitabh Bachchan through twitter. As Bollywood’s first family and their well-wishers celebrated, the Big B received over thousands of congratulatory tweets from around the world and people thronged the Bachchan residence in Juhu to join in the celebration. the Bachchans chose a suburban hospital for the delivery, seemingly to avoid media glare.

Don 2In trouble?Legal problems aren’t new in Bollywood. But this time it involves Baadshah Khan. sRK’s much hyped Don 2 seems to have run into legal trouble. Apparently, the producers of the original Don (1978) nariman Films have sent a legal notice to the makers of Don 2 over the remaking and title copyright infringement. nariman Films are the producers of Don starring Amitabh Bachchan. Later, shah Rukh Khan and Farhan Akhtar approached nariman Films in 2005 for the remaking rights of Don. the original producers say that they gave remaking rights but only for Don - The chase Begins Again and not Don-2- The Chase Continues. Besides, the producers also claim that the agreement expired in 2009 and was never renewed. Hence, excel entertainment and Red Chillies have made Don 2, the Chase Contin-ues without having proper rights. they have thus infringed upon the title registered with nariman Films i.e. - Don and Don-2 - the Return of the King. so, this is second infringement.

sonAKsHI sInHALeft Race - 2Recent reports say that a call from Arbaaz Khan saw sonakshi sinha bidding a hasty adieu to Abbas-Mastan’s Race 2. It is said that Arbaaz Khan believes that all those who opted out of the sequel actually were going to be a part of Abhinav Kashyap’s next! You may recall that Abhinav, who directed Da-bangg, later had a fall-out with the Khan Camp. so, sonakshi had to make her choice quickly. since Abbas-Mustan who are very close to shatrughan and Punam sinha called them up requesting for sonakshi’s dates for their movie. When Arbaaz decided to shoot the sequel, from March 2012 onwards, son-akshi had no choice but to drop everything and make time for the film. It looks like she couldn’t let down the people who gave her first break. Anyway, Abbas confirms that he got a call asking to relieve sonakshi from Race 2. they said – ‘We got a call saying Sonakshi would be required to shoot Dabangg 2 from March 2012. We had no choice but to let her go.’

MADHu sHALInI And Her own stuntsever since tollywood’s Madhu shalini has made it to Ram Gopal Varma’s Department; she’s been hitting the headlines consistently. Freshly, the hot actress is being reported for per-forming her own stunts. You read it right! Madhu shalini is play-ing the role of a gangster and the actress says that she’s really fortunate to get such a role. ‘I have no idea about the kind of role I am playing and I even completed the photo shoot and I was looking exactly like RGV wanted me to. It’s a once in a life time opportunity’ says Madhu shalini. When Madhu was asked to use a body double in performing the stunts, the actress de-nied and instead performed her own stunt. But it wasn’t dif-ficult and risky. ‘I wanted to do stunts on my own. Initially it was a bit difficult but later I got used to it although it demands great physical effort’ adjoins Madhu shalini. He’s all set for another cop role in Dabangg 2 and salman is wea-ry of playing the same cop role in Dookudu apparently. salman saw Dookudu movie at Pixion theatre, in Bandra and his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri wanted to produce the remake and either sohail or Arbaaz were to direct the project. even his sister Alvira Khan also liked it and things are looking pretty bright for Dookudu Hindi remake. Moto GP 2012suzuki Pull outsuzuki have confirmed they will not race in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship after deciding to suspend their participation in the series. the Japanese manufacturer had been expected to quit MotoGP, having already lost rider Alvaro Bautista to Honda for next season, but suzuki have also announced a planned return to MotoGP for the 2014 season. A statement released by suzuki read – ‘Suzuki Motor Corporation has de-cided to suspend temporarily its participation in FIM Road Racing Grand Prix MotoGP from 2012. I have five working days. But I am workaholic. So at times, I work on Saturdays too. Just don’t feel like sitting at home! I love socializing, attending private parties and meet-ing new people. These days, I am into activities for Remy shot promo-tions. When I get time away from work, I spend time with Nirmal Singh Bagga, who supports and guides me professionally.

BREAKFAST TIME!I am health conscious! Breakfast includes – oats and Kellogs with milk mostly and any light and nutritious food. I avoid Rice as it has high amounts of carbs. I con-sume fresh fruit juices often.

13:00time for lunch and I have it always with my colleagues. Like I men-tioned before that I am health conscious, lunch includes lots of sprouts, egg-white, fruit-juices and coconut water. this will go for 30 minutes.

10:00 – 12:00I reach my work place. I check my mails, reply them and depending on the schedules, I visit my clients at hotels and distributors to discuss about marketing strategies. I love the work I do! I believe a lot in team-spirit. It’s always people who make a team. I would like it if my staff addresses me by my name and not ‘sir.’ A way to get work done successfully is by maintaining a good rapport with your colleagues. I respect my team and I don’t want to throw any pres-sure on them. I want to see them happy all the time.

7:00 – 9:00 It’s time to head to my gym – talwalkars. Monish Yadav; who is a close friend of mine, is my gym partner. We always go to gym together. If I miss a day, so would he. that’s the kind of rapport we share with each other. I never miss even a day at gym. not even weekends. I miss it only when I am travelling, but I make sure – if I am staying in a hotel, I run over a treadmill. I am planning to join Aerobics as well. Having protein drinks in between helps gain a lot of flexibility. I reach home by 9. I take bath and get ready to reach my work by 9:30.

At 5:45

I wake up at sharp 5:45. I indulge my-self into Yoga for 10 – 15 minutes. It helps me a lot be-fore going to gym. It helps my mind and body to relax. one doesn’t have to experience fa-tigue if involved in Yoga for a while.

Before marriage, I was into modeling and I had a dream of working in a fashion in-dustry. At 18, I involving myself into exer-cising at gym. I also walked for Anupama Verma at the Country Club. But it was all during my college days. After my gradu-ation on 1995, I joined a company called - Allwyn furniture. But in 1998, I got a bet-ter opportunity at Allied Domecq as a Sales Executive. I am now inspired by my own wine business.

20:00I come home! I spend time with my family. though I have my din-ners at home mostly, I love to take my family out some times. But there is nothing like home-food, at the end of the day.

MY FAMILY

I have one brother and two sisters. I am the most pam-pered, as I am the youngest. My mother is very close to me and I share everything with her. she is like my friend. I have a naughty son and a daughter (Aryan Raj and Joshita, respec-tively). I am blessed to have such an adorable family.

TRAVEL MEMORIES I had seen many places in europe (Austria, France and Italy) and Asia (singapore, Malaysia, thailand, Hong Kong and Makau). I had plans to visit Brazil carnival, but it was cancelled due to a sudden official work. Within India, I holidayed at Goa with my whole family. We make it a point to visit tirupathi or shirdi once a year. I would like to visit usA soon and meet my cousins, who stay at Washington.

lI am fond of wrist-watch collection. (I used to have around 58 watches. I lost a few and have just 28 now). My favourite brands are – Fossil, Omega and Seiko.

l I love giving surprises! I would never leave a guest empty handed.

FISH - the beautiful colours of fish would brighten up your mood and sooth you down anytime. the options are endless. While choosing fish, some of them are pond fish, marine fish, cold water fish and tropical fish. Fish need regular, me-thodical continuous care in order to live. And if you wish to have marine fish, care must be taken that they live only in salt water.

BIRDS – they make great pets, if you are staying in apartments. they are intel-ligent, simple to train and require minimal grooming. their chirps would instantly make your mornings beautiful. they are very affectionate but tend to usually bond with only one member of the family. RABBITS - It is an undeniable fact that Rabbits are one of the most adorable pets. they are very quiet, with extremely low malignance. they have a longer life span and provide a great first pet experience. try opting for them, if you have spacious living areas with a garden.

TURTLES - Keeping a pet turtle can be a fun and rewarding experience. they are omnivorous and when kept outdoors, hibernate from fall until spring. turtles can also be kept indoors, but it requires a lot of maintenance. When a turtle is kept indoors, it is best to create a habitat as close to their natural one as possible. An indoor turtle habitat needs light, shade, monitored moisture and a clean water area for swimming

Dhiren sasmal por-trayed the soulful eyes of little girls and boys in his works, which had a potential to captivate the on looker. nagesh Goud touched multiple sub-jects in his paintings, using pen, ink and metallic colours on canvas. Deepa Vedpathak worked on multiple colour areas and came up with soothing lyrical works. Jagannath Paul explored many moods and facets of women and men through simplified planes, in his works. this exhibition will be on, till December 3rd at Alankritha.

surya Prakash’s landscapes are a tribute to a lost sublime. the milieus that he creates are not of any specific region. they are the reflections of an imagined land. engaged in landscape painting for the last nine years, surya is known for the pointillist renditions of a verdure world. the present suite of paintings is a continuation of his impressionistic landscapes, but they also reflect a new turn in approach. abstract forms. the paintings evoked a sense of contemporariness and also marked surya’s predilection for Abstraction. the trend began with the series - Jargon of the Junk and continued to the subsequent cycle of works - Flight where leafy forms hung in space like potent signs of ominous arrivals. surya employs the laboured process of drip as well as pointillist techniques to create a medley of interlocking color dots that huddle together and eclipse any sharply defined boundaries. If one steps beyond formal representational skills, there are elements which suggest that surya is not capturing a slice of land, but rather conveying a yearning for an idealized terra firma unsullied by the pollution ridden world. Indeed, the defining feature of surya’s work is the exposition of such unnamed lands. the built up picture space initiate a sense of voy-age.

the Immortals of Meluha - first book in the Shiva Trilogy is thrilling. It cleverly inter-sperses fact and fiction, introduces un-

imaginable mythological and historical charac-ters and keeps you hooked all the time. the story takes place in the imaginary land of Meluha and how they are saved from their wars by a nomad named Shiva. It begins with the Meluhan king – Daksha, inviting tribes to stay at his country, one of them being shiva’s tribe. they soon come to recognize shiva as their fabled saviour called Neelkanth after he devours a poison which turns his throat blue. shiva decides to help the Meluhans in their war against the Chandravan-shis, who had joined forces with a cursed group called - Nagas. However, in his journey and the resulting fight that ensues, shiva learns how his choices actually reflected who he aspires to be and how it led to dire consequences. the plot moves at a brisk pace, most of the characters are well etched out and the readers’ attention is never allowed to flag with over-indulgence in any of the plot-points. the romance between shiva and nandi gives almost a Bollywood kind of feel but ultimately turns out to be im-mensely enjoyable. It brings out the human side of shiva and it does take time to adjust to his profanities and non-God side. Purists may have a little problem with the names of the weapons included, but if readers can relate more with the characters due to such nuances, it is absolutely fine. Finally, the book ends with a lot of prom-ise and a battle for the supremacy. the set-up surely leaves you wanting more.

In Mid 1980, I went to Delhi carrying handloom and salwar suits to south extension best stores for selling. At that time south extension store were known as leading stores in India. When I showed them up our collection they literary started laughing on me and said handloom is only meant for maids not for us. I was very much keen on my work and went store to store. At last, I got order from 3 stores for small consign-ment at that time handloom was only consider for lower grade people. But today handloom got its own status. But was funnier when the same stores, who were laughing on me, started selling handloom with status.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE - MACHU PICCHU – Lost City Of The Incas

It is the most familiar icon in the Inca world. the central buildings of Machu Picchu use the classical Inca architectural style of polished dry-stone walls of regular shape. Many junctions in the central city are so perfect that it is said not even a blade of grass fits between the stones. Inca walls had numerous design details that helped protect them against collapsing during an earthquake. Doors and windows are trap-ezoidal and tilt inward from bottom to top corners usually are rounded; inside corners often incline slightly into the rooms and L-shaped blocks often were used to tie outside corners of the structure together. these walls do not rise straight from bottom to top, but are offset slightly from row to row.

INTIHUATANA STONE the Sun-Tier is believed to have been designed as an astronomic clock or calendar by the Incas. the Intihuatana stone is one of many ritual stones in south America. these stones are arranged to point directly at the sun during the winter solstice. the name of the stone (coined per-haps by Bingham) is derived from the Quechua language - Inti means

sun and Wata - is the verb root ‘to tie, hitch (up)’ (huata- is simply a spanish spelling). the Quechua - na suffix derives nouns for tools or places. Hence inti watana is literally an instrument or place to ‘tie up the sun’, often expressed in english as The Hitching Post of the Sun. the Inca believed the stone held the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky. the stone is situated at 13°9’48” s. At midday on november 11th and January 30th the sun stands almost above the pillar, casting no shadow at all. on June 21st the stone is casting the longest shadow on his southern side and on December 21st a much shorter one on his northern side.

CHAVIN DE HUANTAR this archaeological site contains ruins and artifacts and is occupied by later cultures by the Chavín, a major pre-Inca culture. Chavín de Huántar is located north of modern day Lima at the merging of two rivers - the Mosna and Huanchecsa Rivers. As a result this site allows for easy transportation and, at the same time, limited access to outsid-ers. Chavín de Huántar itself is located on a lowland valley where the two rivers merge and high altitude valleys are located nearby. It has been suggested that Chavin de Huantar served as the meeting place of the natural and cosmic forces. the area is known to have natural hot springs as well as an awe-inspiring view of the Huantsan peak which could both add to religious significance of the site.

NAZCA LINESthese are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru. they were designated a unesCo World Heritage site in 1994. the high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometers (50 mi) between the towns of nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana about 400 km south of Lima. the hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, llamas and lizards. People trying to pre-serve the nazca Lines are concerned about threats of pollution and erosion caused by deforestation in the region.

UCAYALI the region of ucayali is in the Peruvian Amazon. Its capital - Pucallpa, is the second largest city in the Peruvian Amazon after Iquitos. the de-partment is home to a variety of geological monuments such as wa-terfalls. tourist lodges are abundant, allowing visitors to experience the Peruvian Amazon firsthand. the large bodies of water such as the Jun-gle Rivers and lakes are perfect for aquatic sports such as water skiing, rowing, and fishing. the ucayali river passes through the department and is the most important mode of transportation.

CUZCOIt is a major tourist destination and receives almost 2 million visitors a year. It is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru. the surrounding area, located in the Huatanay Valley, is strong in gold mining and agriculture, including corn, barley, quinoa, tea and coffee.

Calla Hutan Rumiyuq Street is the most visited by tourists. on the street Hatun Rumiyoq (of the old Rock) was the palace of Inca Roca, which was converted to the Archbishop’s residence. La Compania Church is considered one of the best examples of co-lonial baroque style on the American continents. Its façade is carved in stone and its main altar is made of carved wood covered with gold leaf. It was built over an underground chapel. this church has a valuable collection of colonial paintings of the Cusco school.

Huascarán national Park is home to mountains ranging from 2000 to over 6000 m in height. Huas-carán, the mountain from which the park takes its name, is the highest in Peru at 6768 m, and rises above nearby peaks such as Alpamayo and Pisco.

HUASCARAN NATIONAL PARK It was also pronounced as natural Heritage of Humanity and recog-nized as Reserve of Biosphere Core. the highest mountain in Peru is lo-cated in the park (also named Huascarán, reaching 6,768 meters high). It is possible to walk among mountains of over 6000 m in height without being an experienced mountaineer, although there are peaks which attract the most dedicated climbers. As well as this, ecotourism, horse riding, skiing and guided archaeological excursions are all popular.

Coricancha and Convent of Santo Domingo - the Coricancha (Quri Kancha) was the most important sanctuary dedicated to the sun god Inti at the time of the Inca empire. this temple was named the site of gold because all its walls were covered with gold leaf by the Incas.

Rio Abiseo National Park - the most famous archaeological site in the Rio Abiseo park is Gran Pajatén, a ruined settlement atop a forested ridge overlooking the Montecristo River canyon. nearby are the ruins of Los Pinchudos a series of cliff tombs discovered by Pataz villagers in the early 1970s. Gran Pajatén, Los Pinchudos and other archaeological remains identified in the park are usually attributed to the Chachapoyas culture. the most extensive archaeological work done in Rio Abiseo Park was led by the university of Colorado during the mid-1980s.

Ab belts, ab-rockers, ab-loungers and other infomercial ab-gimmicks – they are all a complete waste of your time and money. Despite the misleading infomercials, the perfectly chiseled fitness models in the commer-cials did not get their perfect body by using that ab contraption. they got their perfect body through real workouts and real nutri-tion strategies.

BULK IS OUT – LEAN IS INLooking back to models, actors in the movie industry a decade ago; they all believed in and had beefed up, well toned, bulkier bodies. While the urge to gain 6-pack abs continues within, people are aiming to have this new look on them. Many actors starting from Hollywood, like – Robert Pattison and Peter Facinelli from twilight fame, Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling; to many among tollywood like – Ram Charan teja, naga Chaitanya and others are now willing to maintain this lean body mass look, as it is the in-thing. CHEESE TIKKA CROISSANTIngredients - 4 croissant buns, 250 gm cottage cheese, 2 green chilis, 2 pieces of ginger, 1/2 cup curd, 1/4 tsp. chili powder, salt to taste, 2 green cardamoms, 1 tsp. gram flour, 1-2 drops of orange colour and oil for fry.

Method of Preparation -

• Cut the cheese into 1/2 square pieces.

• Grind green chilis, green cardamoms and ginger.

• Hang curds in a cloth.

• Remove all water.

• Mix together all ingredients and let the cottage cheese marinate for 2-3 hours.

• Heat a non-stick pan and fry cheese pieces, applying a little oil on both sides

or roast in an oven or tandoor.

• now cut the tops of the buns and scoop them.

• Fill the mixture in scooped buns, place the tops, apply a little butter over them and bake in a preheated over for 15 minutes at moderate.

• When they are done, serve hot.

BREAD PAKODAIngredients -

4-5 bread slices, 1 cup gram flour (Besan), 1/4th tsp. turmeric powdersalt to taste, 1/2 tsp. ajwain, red chili powder to taste,1/4th tsp. garam masala powder, water for batter and oil for frying.

Making of Bread Pakoda -

• Cut bread slices into desired shapes.

• In a bowl; add gram flour salt, chili powder, garam masala, ajwain and mix it.

• now by pouring little water at a time, make a smooth batter. Heat oil in a kadhai.

• Dip bread pieces in the batter and fry till crisp on medium flame.

• serve bread pakora hot with green chutney and tomato sauce.

HOMEMADE INDIAN PIZZAIngredients -2 pizza breads, 2 Amul or any other cheese cubes, 1/2 cup tomato ketchup, 2 onions, 1 tomato, 1/2 cup cheese spread and 2 capsicums.

Optional - You can add chicken, if you want.

Method of preparation -

• Cut the vegetables into rings.

• Grate cheese.

• spread the ketchup on the pizza bread.

• now spread the rings of the vegetables.

• Lastly spread cheese and cheese spread.

• Bake in a pre-heated oven for 10 minutes and serve hot.

Your Pizza is ready to eat now.

DAAL KACHODIIngredients - 3/4 cup skinless dried black beans (urad), 4 cups flour, 1 green chili chopped, 1/2 tsp. salt, oil for deep frying, 1 tbsp. anise seeds (saunf), 1 tsp. coriander seeds, 1 tsp. white cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp. red chili powder, 1/4 tsp. asafoetida powder.

Method of Preparation -

• soak the beans in water overnight then rinse and drain.

• sift the flour and gradually add enough water to make soft dough. Cover the dough with damp cloth and leave for 30 minutes.

• Grind the drained beans with the chili powder, salt and spices to make stuffing. Mix well and divide it into 16 equal portions.

• Divide the dough into 16, using wet hands and smear each portion with a little oil.

• Flatten and roll out into 2 inch round.

• Wrap one portion of stuffing in each round and roll into a smooth ball, using greased hands.

• Flatten and roll into a 3-4 inch round.

• Heat plenty of oil in a deep frying pan or a kadhai.

• now lift the rolled kachori and carefully slip it into the hot oil.

• Immediately start flickering hot oil over the top of it with a spatula, so that it will swell up like a ball.

• this should take only a few seconds. Flip the kachori over and cook the other side until golden brown. serve the Dal Kachori hot with chutney.

BESAN DHOKLAIngredients - 350gms gram flour (Besan), 1 cup curd (stirred), 1 tsp. green chilis (paste), 1 tsp. ginger (paste), salt to taste, 1 tsp. soda bi-carb / eno fruit salt, 1 lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder, 1 tbsp. oil - for tampering, few curry leaves, 1 tsp. mustard seeds, 2 tsp. oil, coriander leaves (chopped), 2-3 green chilis (vertically slit).

Method of Preparation -

• In a bowl add gram flour (besan), curd and water.• Mix well and make a smooth batter. the batter should be of thick

consistency.• Add salt and set aside for 4 hours covered with a lid.• take the ginger and green chili paste and add to the batter. Also

add turmeric powder and mix well.• Keep the steamer or cooker ready on gas.• Grease a baking dish (it should fit in the steamer or cooker).• now in small bowl take a tsp. of soda bi-carb or eno, 1 tsp. oil and

lemon juice and mix well.• Add this to the batter and mix well.• Pour the batter into the greased pan and steam for 10-12 minutes

or till done.• Cool for sometime and cut into big cubes.• Heat little oil in a small pan and add mustard seeds and curry

leaves. Allow to splutter. Remove and pour it over Dhoklas.• Garnish the besan Dhokla with coriander and slited green chilis.• serve with hari chutney.

WoRLDWIDeMeRRIMentA time when families and friends get together!Christmas is more about giving, than taking…

‘Biting-cold December! I was accompanied by my family on visiting friends; for dinner at their residence, on a pleasant Christmas evening. It was so cold, I wondered if there would be snowfall later. As a little boy, I wholeheartedly wished though for snow to feel once; while waiting for it all evening till late in the night, looking across the window at my friend’s home. And as a little boy (naughty and shy, but curious about nature and happenings around), I was looking forward for surprises, was keen to hear and understand more about Christmas and what’s about the festival – so much felicity, we can’t wait to celebrate it. As a matter of fact, there are people who plan the whole year, just to make sure the celebrations go perfectly.

A few moments before dinner, I was called up to a huge gathering inside to be a part of the much awaited moment – cutting the Christmas cake. I knew, I never did that before and so was more than glad, with elders surrounding me. standing so close to the cake, I was looking around at everyone with that innocent subtle smile, yet with deep sense of joy setting within. that day was also the first time, I ever saw a well-bedecked Christmas tree, subtly yet finely kept at one side of the home. And not too late after dinner, I was told by my friends there (who were rather too elder than I was, then) - the story involved in Christmas, the purpose of celebrations, responsibilities and human morals and the way it changes us every year, as we grow older. that was the best Christmas I had and wish I could bring that day back. I wish Christmas was like that every year. the festival never fades away without giving something good to everyone. It was and will remain special for me. While being drifted to how incredibly we were celebrating inside my friends’ home - entailed to sharing words and happy times together, time flew by faster than we thought, through utter excitement and bliss. But, sigh! My dream to feel the snow as a kid remained a dream.’

the real meaning of Christmas is to remember the birth of Jesus and why He came in - to save us from our sins. A time to re-member the meaning of sharing, not with family, but with everyone around! (Although this should be remembered all year round) - Gifts and meals are sent out to those who are less fortunate. Celebrations start the afternoon of 24th December with

families preparing meals for the next day. A variety of meats, salads and puddings are made. towards the evening, it’s time to head off to church and listen to the message about Christmas. An hour or so before midnight, candles are lit and carols are sung. the service ends with blessings and good wishes. once back home, gifts are opened or left for the next morning. Handing out gifts is optional. the next morning - December 25th; starts early with families getting together and greeting each other. the whole day consists of being together as a family and enjoying the meal. each second of life is a blessing and a miracle.

CHRISTMASCAKESTORy–Celebrating With Plum Cakes…the Christmas cake as we know it, today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian england. originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheat flour. A lot of efforts go into making a Christmas cake. It takes hours to bake. A lot of fruits, nuts and spices are used in the making. An old tradition and it still is, in the united Kingdom and it began as plum porridge. It then changed over time, becoming plum Christmas pudding. some use farthing coins, scotch or Rum also. the scotts and Irish vary slightly with alcohol types, but in essence, they are the same.

Kranti – sevagram, Mahatma Gandhi’s ashram, Maharashtra – 1980. I was living there. I, along with my brother and a close friend of mine, wanted to meet Yelan and interact with her, who then newly visited India with her grandfather. It couldn’t happen! Days went by and she was advised to take Chemistry classes from me and visited my home for the first time. I didn’t teach her the subject of Chemistry much, but the other kind of chemistry worked well (laughs). soon, I fell in love with her! But after knowing that her grandfather never appreciated this relationship and didn’t want us to be together, he wanted to take Yelan back to China. But her Visa got cancelled and she had to stay back in India, about which I was happy! We both then wanted to get married.

Yelan – My first visit in India was Chennai. We stayed at my grandfa-ther’s friend Ramchandran, who was Rajiv Gandhi Peace award winner. From Chennai, we went to Delhi and stayed in Gandhi foundation and from there; we went to sevagram, where my grandfather wrote a lot of articles on Gandhi. We lived there for three years. Like Kranti said, I came to India with my grandfather. He studied in shanti niketan with Ravindranath tagore. He then became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and sabarmati ashram. He was a celebrated Journalist from singapore (who worked for Nanyang newspaper). Chinese didn’t know much about India then, so my grandfather’s ambition was write about Indian history and civilization. He also wrote about Mahatma Gandhi’s life and was also a part of his ashram. My grandfather passed away then. We got married in 1982. After working in nagpur for five years, we got shifted to Hyderabad in 1988.

there and I used to help her with her cycling classes. My visit to Hyder-abad brought a lot of changes in me. I had quit smoking and joined the early-morning exercise sessions, but for some time; I started with just walking. It became monotonous and I wanted to jog but was a little shy, when someone saw me jogging on the roads. so I started doing that just before sun-rise at Hyderabad Public school which had a huge ground. one morning, I saw a man jumping across the compound wall into the ground. I had to stop immediately and pretend as if I was doing an exercise. Later, I realized that he was polio affected. that moment inspired me a lot. I gave a thought to myself – ‘If a physically challenged person can run, so can I.’ I soon started running bravely without any shyness.

Jwala – Initially, I was into Gymnastics and tennis, but my Mom advised me to skip to Badminton. My Mom was a good Badminton player too, playing for her school. she lived in Tian Jin which was a union territory in China. It was then a compulsion that every school student should be into sports and fitness. she also played Basketball for two years. After college, she came to India and was into sports when we settled in Hy-derabad too. I have always been into sports! I first visited LB stadium in 1989 and under the guidance of sM Arif (a Dronacharya awardee),

‘I had started practicing at the age of four. My Dad always wanted me to be a sportsperson. not a hobby or a pastime, but right from the day one; I always took Badminton as a profes-sion and nothing less than that. I still play tennis, Cricket and Volleyball when I get time.’ - Jwala

I learned Badminton and from then, there was no looking back. My coach played a vital role in my success so far.

I have travelled a lot on a professional basis, but London is somewhere I enjoyed a lot! It’s a perfect holiday destination. It has great places to shop and hang out at. I feel more relaxed there and wish to visit London again when I find time.

Insi – I am proud of Jwala’s achievements as a sportsperson. We are more like friends than sisters. our bonding is amazing! I miss her when she is away from India due to tournaments. though we argue a lot about things, we love each other and I guess that’s how sisters are. We shop together. though we have an age gap of eight years; she takes advises from me, at times.

one of the most elegant and proven supercars to arise out of the 1930s was the 2900B. It was Alfa Romeo’s most

prestigious grand touring car and was based on their successful motor sport engineering. on the track, the 2900 competition cars ben-efited from a decade of Alfa Romeo progress and became the most successful of their time. A trio of 2900As placed first-second-third at the 1936 Mille Miglia, while three specially built 2900MMs accomplished the same feat at the 1938 edition. the decision to make a road-going variant of these winning designs must have been easy. Called the 2900B, Alfa Romeo prepared around thirty slightly detuned 2900 chassis to receive some of the most excep-tional Italian bodies. Both a 2800 mm short wheelbase (Corto) and 3000 mm long wheel-

base (Lungo) were made available. touring of Milan was responsible for almost the entire production of 2900B bodies and his flowing designs on the 2900B were his masterworks. Particularly striking was touring’s exceptional Lungo Coupe which took advantage of the long chassis and exaggerated it with a huge rear overhang. In total, touring constructed around 20 spyders and 10 Coupes, while a unique and more garish grey cabriolet was designed by Pinin Farina as one of his first ever projects. Because of its high price, only 30 examples of the 2900B were completed for road use. After the war broke out and settled down, Alfa Romeo had a hard time living up to its glorious pre-war years.

BUGATTI TYPE 57C VAN VOOREN CABRIOLET

the shah of Persia’s Bugatti was among the more spectacular designs fit on a type 57 chassis. Mohammad Pahlavi was born the son of Reza Pahlavi who was the shah responsible for the modernization of Iran and he took a keen interest in Automobiles. Mohammad took over his father’s role and led the petroleum-rich Iran

from 1941 onwards. By 1979, conservative Muslims, led by the Ayatollah Khomeini, revolted and overthrew Moham-mad’s dictatorship monarchy. using the flowing lines of Figoni et Falaschi as inspiration, Van Vooren worked upon chassis #57808, a low slung Bugatti type 57C. Bugatti con-tributed a type 57C chassis that came equipped with a supercharger. It helped the car produce an impressive 175 horsepower (130kW) from a 3245cc (198 cu in) engine. until 1979, the shah’s Bugatti stayed in the Royal Court of Iran. Afterwards, the Ayatullahs, who had nearly scraped the car, sold it at a very low price. Fortunately, the buyer had the Bugatti shipped to the usA and saved it in the process. At that point, the car was heavily butchered to accommodate an American V8 until later shipped to eng-land for a full rebuild by Rod Jolly Coach building and Louis Giron. After the restoration, the shah’s Bugatti auc-tioned for $1,760,000 usD and has since changed own-ers several times. the car currently has a good home at the Petersen Museum in California alongside some of the most important cars in world.

In their factory in Courbevoie the brothers; together with mechanical engineer Joseph Ksandr, started modifying road and racing cars from other manufacturers. Albert and Angelo be-

wheel drive technology was still experimen-tal in those days and there were a number of difficulties yet to solve before front wheel drive cars could be presented for regular use. the Bucciali brothers decided to concentrate completely on developing a new chassis and drive system for front wheel driven cars. Be-cause of the lack of a longitudinal drive shaft it was possible to fit the cars with very low bodies. A small number of them were fitted with very tasteful styled bodies by saout-chik, set off by a large flying stork symbol on each side of the bonnet. this stork was the same as the one painted on the fuselage of Albert’s sPAD XIII fighter plane. the brothers never cared much about making money and the constant development of new technol-ogy rapidly depleted their funds. In 1932 a last new Bucciali model was shown, fitted with a V12 engine from Voisin and a striking 4-door sedan body by saoutchik, which you see here. After that the Bucciali name disap-peared from the car scene. While it is not exactly known how many of the Bucciali tAV models were produced; only two are known to still exist.

DIAMLER DOUBLE-SIx 50 (1926 – 1930)

Despite offering numerous models and having royal support, Daimler wanted to take an extra step after Rolls-Royce released their feature-rich Phantom in 1925. to stay competitive, Chief engineer - Laurence Pomeroy decided to make the most of Daimler’s engineering and adopt sleeve valves in a new seven liter Double

six V12. to do so, he mated two existing 6-cylinder, 25/85 hp engines to a common aluminum crankcase and refined the sleeves to reduce oil consumption. Daimler is one of Britain’s oldest marques and has a history stretching back to the dawn of the automobile. their very first cars were built under license from Got-tlieb Daimler and quickly became official transportation for British royalty. Fit for kings, Daimlers were well ap-pointed and this reputation was enhanced in 1909 with the adoption of sleeve valves. the Double six is named after a taxable RAC rating of 50 hp, but the modern rat-ing is somewhere between 130-150 bhp. Less than 10 cars were ordered with the Double six 50 engine. Built in four banks of three cylinders, each block of the Dou-ble six engine was independent with its own cooling, intake and exhaust system. It could be ordered in a vari-ety of sizes and the option of regular poppet valves was available for more conservative customers. For others that were more ambitious, the seven liter Double six 50 was the best, but only a few cars were ordered with it. since these had one of the most complex motorcar en-gines ever made, they demanded equally as dramatic coachwork to surround it.

DELAHAYE 145 CHAPRON COUPE (1938 – 1946)

Motivated by their racing success, Henri Chapron bought two used Delahaye type 145 competition cars to re-body them in his own way. With performance credentials to win events like the Pau Grand Prix, this chassis was one of the fastest in its day - a very special type 145 adorned with simple cigar body-

work won a million francs from the French government for breaking the speed record at Montlhery. With such a potent chassis and graceful body design to complement it, these two Coupes became Chapron’s masterwork. It’s obvious he had a keen sense to re-body Delahaye’s most sporting chassis, even if it meant including compli-cated racing engines which were difficult to repair. the first car, chassis 48772 entered shop in 1939, but wasn’t completed until after the war due to delayed payments. By 1951 the chassis was mated with its new body and it was shipped to new York. Af-ter a less than a year of driving, the used racing engine needed to be rebuilt. unfor-tunately, the engine was never completed and the car sat dormant for twenty years. After its restoration, the car was shown at the 1985 Pebble Beach Concours with its striking blue/burgundy paint scheme which helped emphasize the embossed ridge of the fenders. over the entire body a thin layer of pearl iridescence was painted under the clear coat which gave the car a distinct shimmer in direct sunlight.

there are few cars which are as dramatic as the Jonckheere Coupe. Its imposing length, menacing curves and oversize grill make most other pre-war cars look boring. And it certainly makes most other Rolls-Royces look staid by comparison. Furthermore, the benchmarks of size, stature, cost and risk will probably never be reached again. If we had to pick the most memorable Rolls-Royce, this would have to be it. such

a striking car would certainly have to have an eccentric owner and certainly be born in the Art Deco movement of the 1930s. the Jonckheere Coupe was very much a part of this movement with its stylish modernism and mathematical geometric shapes which were popular at the time. this is especially true of the car’s circular doors which give it a proper nickname - The Round Door Rolls. the doors, which are actually oval, required two half-moon pieces of glass that closed towards each other within a complex wind-ing mechanism. other details included slid-ing left and right sun vents, a sloping fast-back profile and an enormous rear tail fin. eventually the car made its way stateside and was saved by Max obie before being scrapped. He restored the car in a brilliant hue of metallic gold and refurbished details like the silk headliner and seats which fold-ed into beds. From here, the car was shown as a sideshow at fairs where anyone with a dollar well spent could have viewed the Coupe. After its freakshow days were num-bered, the golden behemoth was stored away for long time.
