The very first Graduation Ceremony for the Barrie Learning Centre took place on Octo-ber 13th - and what a day it was!!!

The ‘Celebration of Achievement’ consisted of: a Ceremony of Dedication; Donor and Volunteer Recognition; the presentation and recognition of our first ‘Certified Tu-tors’; and the grand finale - the Graduation Ceremony itself.

We welcomed a number of special guests and dignitar-ies including: LGC Terry A. McLean & Bonnie, PSGC and President of the SRCF C. Robert Town-shend & Pat, PSGC and Executive Director of Learning Centres in Canada Matthew F. Todd, Grand Chancellor and Past President of the SRCF Allard B. Loopstra, Deputy for On-tario and Vice-President of the SRCF Gareth R. Taylor & Karen, Grand Prior Mi-chael D.H. Farr & Kathleen, and Active Member and Treasurer of the SRCF Dun-can S. Skinner & Carole.

As this was our first graduation ceremony we started the afternoon off with a Cere-mony of Dedication conducted by David Boyd, Terry McLean, Gareth Taylor, Mi-chael Farr and Robert Brethour.

Following the Dedication we recognized individuals and groups who have made a significant financial contribution to the Learning Centre, and also to those dedi-cated volunteers who assist us in so many ways.

Next up was the recognition of two of our Tutors who have completed the require-ments to become ‘Certified Tutors’. Con-gratulations to Tutors Bill Martin & Pat Hubbert on this significant achievement!

Finally, the highlight of the afternoon, the presentation and recognition of our gradu-ates – Josh Wilkinson & Ashley Merker.

Ashley was the Class Vale-dictorian and did a marvel-lous job. She certainly rein-forced the value of our Learning Centres and the difference this tutoring makes in the lives of these young people.

It should also be noted that, while this was our first formal graduation ceremony, we have had two other children

who received their certifica-tion earlier – Luke Pletsch & Sheldon Linfield. We were very happy to wel-come and acknowledge Luke and his family at the ceremony. Sheldon was unable to attend as he now lives out of Province.

While there were a large number of people who worked so very hard behind the scenes to make the day the huge success it was, special mention must be made of Learning Centre Director Ross Martin, Board Chair-man David Boyd, and in particular Paul Fockler. Their efforts and attention to de-tail resulted in a first class program and a fitting tribute to our young graduates.

THE DUTY OF A SPONSOR

It is an honour and privilege to sponsor a man into our rite. But with this comes responsibility and duty.

The candidates are the most important component in our reunions, and their sponsors must play a large role in ensuring their experience is a positive one. The sponsors need to advise and guide their candidates before, during and following entry into Scottish Rite.

Before - make sure they are aware of ‘what, where & when’ they will be needed; During - support your candidates by accompanying them throughout their journey through the degrees; and Following - encourage their involve-ment in Valley activities and their attendance at our reunions.

Things are progressing nicely with our plans to host the 2013 Annual Session of Supreme Council at the Blue Mountains Resort. Our various committees have been hard at work in the planning process with the goal of making this Session an unforgettable ex-perience for those who attend. Our General Chairman John Imrie has a lot of great ideas to achieve that goal and we are very ex-cited about the venue itself and particularly its location. Never before has an Annual Session been held at a resort type facility - and we think it’s going to be great!

While most of our Committee Chairs have had a complete site inspection, we had the opportunity to escort SGC Richard Brown to Blue Mountain on Oc-tober 26th. He was accompanied by LGC Terry McLean and GSG Brian Gilkinson with John Imrie, Bob Brethour and Rae Hutt representing the Val-ley of Barrie. While it wasn’t the nicest of days for a tour, it did give the SGC a full look at all of the facilities and accommodations. All are in agree-ment that this is a first class venue for the Session with a tremendous amount to offer those attending.

Our goal as hosts is two-fold: to actively promote the facility and all that it has to offer; and to ensure those who attend are welcomed and cared for to the very best of our ability. To achieve the first goal we will be sending out information about Blue Mountain and the Collingwood area to 33rds across the country, and we will include as much information as possible on our web-site (follow the link at barrievalleyscottishrite.com).

To achieve the second goal we need help - lots of help! We’ll need people at the airport in Toronto, people to welcome our guests when they arrive at the resort, people to help register our guests, people to help at the banquets and church service, people to help set up and take down the Lodge Room - in other words we’ll need a lot of help from a lot of people over the course of the 5 day Session. You don’t have to be a 33rd, or even a member for that matter! Several spouses and members of local Masonic Lodges have signed on to assist us, but we still need volunteers for all aspects of the Session.

If you haven’t already done so, please offer your assistance in whatever area you prefer. Or simply contact one of our Committee Chairs or General Chairman John Imrie (705-734-2730 or [email protected]) and we’ll steer you in the right direction! Events like this are a lot of work, but they’re also a lot of fun to participate in. Come join our 2013 Team!!!

The Fall Reunions of the Valley of Barrie were named in honour of Ill. Bro. Doug Culham 32°. Doug grew up on the family farm in Sunnidale Township and later worked for Ontario Hydro and then the OPP. When the opportunity presented itself, Doug and his wife Martine purchased and operated a hardware and building supply business in Wasaga Beach, later affiliating with Home Hardware. After his retirement Doug returned to his roots on the farm. We congratulate Doug on having these Fall Reunions named in his honour.

The candidates of the Doug Culham Reunions this fall were:

Mission Statement

to stimulate interest in activities throughout our jurisdiction.

The Barrie Valley Triangle is published twice a year in May & December.

ANCIENT & ACCEPTED SCOTTISH

RITE OF FREEMASONRY OF

CANADA

Half of the proceeds from the 11th Annual Jackson's Toyota Scion

Community Golf Tournament were graciously donated by Bob Jackson

to the Barrie Learning Centre. We had several teams entered and it was a

great day! Pictured at left is Greg Jackson presenting Learning Centre

Chairman David Boyd with a cheque for $11,000. Also in attendance

were Learning Centre Director Ross Martin and Active Member Robert

Brethour. Thank you Jackson’s Toyota!

The proceeds from the 2nd Annual William J. Hay Memorial Golf

Tournament also went to our Learning Centre. A big thank you goes out

to organizers Joe Malek & John Alexander for their donation of $2,400.

In other fundraising news, Grey District DDGM Robert A. McCulloch

has designated the Learning Centre as the charity of choice for his 2012-

2013 District Project. Thank you to the Masons of Grey District for

your support! And one of our most faithful supporters - the Lakeland Chapter of Eastern Star in Bracebridge - has once

again made a significant donation to the Learning Centre - $1,332.50. Thank you!

Congratulations to our three newest Honorary Inspectors-General, Coro-

neted in Winnipeg this past September. We welcome David Ferrie (Laura),

Chris Hedges & Steve McIntyre (Marta) to the ranks of 33° Masons in our

Valley. David, Chris and Steve are pictured at right immediately following

the ceremony. In Winnipeg, five additional members were elected to receive

their 33° next September in Blue Mountains - Michael Coyle (Marie), Doug-

las Crawford (Penny), Dale Hunter (Catherine), Brian Johnson (Gwen),

and Chris Toole (Jacey). We look forward to welcoming them in 2013.

For many years now the Valley of Barrie has had two 3rd Degree Teams

available to confer that degree in Craft Lodges throughout our jurisdiction.

These Degree Teams permit us to explain and promote Scottish Rite within

those Lodges. They are a golden opportunity to attract new members anxious

to expand on their Masonic experience. We have now expanded this pro-

gram with several additional degree team coordinators. In addition to

Gordon Spencer (Georgian North) and John Harrison (York), we now have

Directors for the following areas in our jurisdiction: Brian Shannon (Grey),

Mark Linnemoller (Georgian South), Steve McIntyre (Muskoka) and Gary Morgan (Victoria). Please contact these Direc-

tors if you would like to have a Scottish Rite 3rd Degree Team visit your Lodge!

And last but not least, plan to attend our Installation Ceremonies and Joint Advisory Meeting on January 19th. This is

your chance to have a say in Valley activities and the decision-making process. All members are welcome to attend.
