The Communiqué Santa Clara United Methodist Church 1700 Lincoln Street • Santa Clara • California • 95050 Vol. 43– issue 6 June 2017 Dear Church: Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we conclude Easter season, Pentecost Sunday is on June 4 th . It is such an important day of our Christian faith. It is known as the birthday of Christianity. The focus on this article is the Holy Spirit. Who is the Holy Spirit? People have been trying to define it and describe it, but all fall short. In this article, I would like is to focus on the work of the Holy Spirit on that Day of Pentecost. First, the presence of the Holy Spirit became evident in an overwhelming way. The book of Acts reports that “suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting” (2:2). The Holy Spirit manifested its tremendous power in the movement of the wind. Many times strong gusts of wind hit me while I was walking or hit my car while I was driving. Air turbulence easily knocks around a big airplane. Those moments make me amaze at the power of wind. Second, the presence of the Holy Spirit touched the disciples in the upper room during that Pentecost Day. People of faith from all backgrounds, various languages, and different nationalities could not deny the presence of the Holy Spirit in a personal, powerful, life-transforming moment. During my lifetime, I have experienced the Holy Spirit during a worship service or a spiritual rally. Although there is much emotion, the best parts of those experiences are the love, peace, joy, and unity felt among the participants. The group of people can be big or small, but the presence and power of the Holy Spirit are evident. In those precious moments people are greatly blessed with a profound sense of forgiveness, of new hope, new life, healing, and reconciliation. For me, the most exciting work of the Holy Spirit is its third action on Pentecost Day. By enabling the people to speak different languages so that non- Aramaic-speaking people can understand the message, the Holy Spirit breaks all kinds of barriers, indeed frees the gospel from a particular Continued on page two-Pastor’s message

Dear Church:Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ. As we conclude Easter season, Pentecost Sunday is on June 4th.

Food Barrel ProjectMany thanks to everyone who has helped keep the food barrel project going.  For the first Sunday in June, we would like you to bring canned fruit.

Anything else is appreciated. As last month, the barrel will be in the front of the church and you will place it in the barrel during Communion. Pastor will

bless the food after Communion. If you have any other ideas to make this a fun project, please contact Donna West. Thank you all and God Bless.

Why choose SCUMC?  I was originally baptized as an infant by my great-grandfather, a Methodist circuit-rider Pastor. My life since has taken me from the Presbyterian faith to being a Lutheran to an Episcopalianto the last 20-plus years as a Pentecostal Pastor and bible teacher.  When I married Berta Lee in 2008, I started attending SCUMC.  After moving permanently to Santa Clara in 2015, God encouraged me to join SCUMC and contribute my leadership and managerial skills to help our church grow.  God is in charge of His church and our job is to listen to Him, and love and accept all the people He sends us.  I pray we can all do this together.  Jack Schenaker

Let us pray: Lord, your Word speaks promises of healing and restoration and I thank you for the miracles you still perform today. Today I

claim those promises over my friends. I believe in the healing power. Please reach down and surround my friends with supernatural peace and strength and give them the faith to believe that all things are possible for you. Amen.

Pastor’s message... first-century Galilean rabbi to a universal message of hope and salvation for all people.

We see that Jesus repeatedly reached out to the marginalized, the poor, the sick, the social rejects, women, foreigners, military, nonmilitary, known sinners, the religious, and the wealthy. Jesus’ closing words before his ascension are that his followers are to go to all the nations of the world to baptize and preach in his name. The Holy Spirit gives Jesus’ followers the power to carry out the commandment Jesus gave them.

I once was a Buddhist. While I was attending college in Cambodia, I studied English with a missionary from Oklahoma. I was so intrigued reading about Jesus that I got a Bible to read more about Jesus. Soon, I encountered the living Christ and became a Christian.

For the first time in my life, I felt forgiven and redeemed. I left a life of confusion and uncertainty for a life of assurance, hope, faith, and love. I began living a new life, a life based on the living Christ. The Holy Spirit inspired someone to became a missionary, who introduced me to read the bible and be touched by the message about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Can you think about your Pentecost? We can experience the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in worship, in the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion, during prayer time, during Bible study, during missionary outreach, during service work, in whatever activity helps us have an open heart and mind to the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also present in times of personal suffering and even death. God sends us the Holy Spirit in such moments to comfort us but also to give us the courage, faith, and power to deal with our suffering and grief and then move on.

The Holy Spirit helps us experience God’s presence and gives us the power to be faithful followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is God’s way of staying in touch daily with his people as they share the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed. Thus the whole world can

Santa Clara United Methodist Church June 2017

rejoice in the hope that God’s love in the Lord Jesus Christ is also for them. Let us pray that as disciples of the Jesus Christ, we have open hearts and open minds to the presence and movement of the Holy Spirit. Amen.Blessings,Pastor Vathanak Heang
