December 2019 On Tuesday, November 26, HCI had it’s first band concert of the 2019-20 school year. The concert began with the Grade 6’s playing two selections “Lean On Me” and “Beginning Christmas Medley”. While nerves played a factor in the band’s performance of “Lean on Me” the band certainly redeemed themselves and played a very nice rendition of the “Beginning Christmas Medley. Next up was the Grade 7 class who played “Samba La Bamba” and “Deck the Halls”. The audience was thoroughly impressed with the improvement these students have made and how well they performed both their pieces. Following the Grade 7’s was the Grade 8’s who played “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Activity March”. Once again the students performed very well and demonstrated their improvement over the fall. Fol- lowing the Grade 8’s was the HCI Jazz Band who played three numbers, Mr. P.C., Clocks, and Bye Bye Blackbird. The students played very well and it was noted how much these students enjoy making music together. Next was the newly formed Park West Community Band who played four selections “The Thunderer”, “Somewhere Out There”, Frosty the Snowman” and “Winter Wonderland”. Everyone was impressed with the musicianship of these community members and their enthusiasm for making music. The final group of the evening was the HCI Senior Band who played “Ancient Dances” and “Castle Gate, 1924”. The band sounded very good and gave a very exciting end to the evening with the fi- nale of “Castle Gate, 1924”. The concert was well attended (to the point that more chairs had to be brought out), and it was a very enjoyable evening of music. The next band concert for HCI will be March 24, 2020 at 7:30pm. A quick note that if you would like to join the Park West Community Band, it’s not too late. Rehearsals take place Wednesday eve- nings from 7:30-9:00pm in the HCI Band Room. It is free to join and the group will be happy to have you regardless of your playing ability. A moment for families with Pastor Orland

“11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,” (Titus 2:11-12.

In the Bible we read that angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds. Ordinary people. Today ordinary people are still find-ing faith in Jesus Christ. Someone once told me that they do not believe in God because of all the bad stuff in the world. The problem of evil is ages old. While God does sovereignly work in world events, His primary way of changing the world now is through meeting ordinary people personally. The grace of God that appears to all people, is a personal faith in Jesus Christ. And that grace teaches us to deny ungodliness, lusts and to live soberly, righteously and godly in the present age we live. God fixes the world by fixing us individually. God sent His Son who paid the penalty for our sin by dying in our place on the Cross. When we receive Christ by faith the Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and an inner transformation takes place. He forgives your sins, He gives inner peace, He gives inner strength to face life’s challenges and one day He will take you to heaven. Sadly, many choose to re-ject the Good News of Jesus Christ. They forfeit the free gift of heaven and the peace and transformation that he offers. John 3:36 says this, “He who puts his trust in the Son has life that lasts forever. He who does not put his trust in the Son will not have life, but the anger of God is on him.” The new life that is in Christ is a free gift that God offers. Why not think further about what God has to offer and how He desires to change the world one person at a time.

From all of us at Cornerstone, may you have a blessed Christmas season!

Pastor Orland

The Hamiota Community Foundation would like to thank everyone for their support over the course of 2019.

We held the “Toonie Luncheon” again this year on Friday, November 15th to kick off the 24 Hour Endow Manitoba Giving Chal-lenge Campaign which was a great success with Committee Director Dave Rawlings providing greetings and thanks to those who attended the event as well as introducing our Grant Recipients who briefly described their projects and what their grant money would be used towards. We are very pleased with the outcome at this year’s 24 Hour Giving Challenge as we raised $7,528.17 in donations with the support of many contributors from within the community and without, and with the matching stretch dollars the Province & The Winnipeg Foundation will provide, our total donations amount contributed to the Community Foundation’s Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation is brought to $10,539.44.

Grant Applications for the 2020 intake year will go out early in January with a return deadline of February 21st, 2020.

Please have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

What’s Happening at the Arts Centre??

It has been a privilege to be administrator of your

arts centre for the past seven and one-half years, but the time has

come for a change. I have loved working with the arts council board;

getting to know the artists, musicians, students, and members of the

community; finding ways and means to help the art centre thrive, and

championing the important role music and the arts play in our lives

and our community. I have attended many Westman, regional, and

provincial arts meetings and the Hamiota area has been held up as an

example of how an arts council can improve quality of life in a rural

community while cooperatively working with local organizations

and businesses. We are called regularly for advice and toured by oth-

er arts organizations to try and understand the secret of our success.

We even were singled out to represent Westman art councils at con-

sultations with the provincial minister in charge of culture as they

reviewed policies. The Heritage Arts Centre is a jewel in this

community that attracts close to 2000 students and visitors each year

and teaches over 10,000 man-hours of dance, arts, crafts, and work-

shops both here and in the surrounding communities. But, the secret

of the success is not one person or policy – the secret is this commu-

nity. For example, most of the other art councils have had to drop

paint nights as fund-raisers because the artists and organizations in

those communities started to do them privately and there was too

much competition. Here, the artists said ‘we will use our skills to

help the art council raise funds through this means” and the organiza-

tions have said “ that’s an art council fund-raiser we will leave it to

them”. Our board also has remained flexible thinking up new ideas

and listening to what the community is interested in. We have so

many talented musicians, artists, artisans, bakers and organizers who

use their skills for concerts, classes, the Show and Shine, the Christ-

mas Craft and Dainty Sale, summer teas and Thursday Street Mar-

kets. The secret is everyone understands the important balance the

arts bring to our community and works together to help make things

happen. Administrators may change but the board is always there in

the background working hard: President MaryAnn Stevenson, Ken-

ton: Vice-president Melissa Hill, Miniota; Finance Chair Janice

Maxwell, Secretary Ruth Stewart, and directors Amanda Bawdon,

Gaye Sheardown, Alisa Holmes, Mary Lowe, Carol Forsyth (Oak

River), Marlene Andrew, Sheena Blanchard, and Celia Nolan

(always room for more if anyone would like to help out! ) Our new

administrator is Allison Gardham. She brings a lifelong interest in

the arts, and an amazing resume of organizational skills, program

planning, and office experience honed over her past seven years as

Senior Human Resource professional for Tundra Oil & Gas out of

Virden. She begins Jan. 6, 2020, and we are so lucky to have this tal-

ented and artistic professional as our administrator! Please drop in

and introduce yourself and make her as welcome as you have made

me feel all these years.

Thank you to everyone for your support and, as Rob and I will still

be volunteering, teaching, and helping out with events, have a won-

derful Christmas season and we’ll see you all soon!

Hamiota/Oakview Seniors

Well Christmas is upon us and winter has truly arrived. That being said please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, es-pecially ensuring you have proper footwear and using whatever mobility aids you need to remain upright on the slippery sidewalks and roads.

Our November flu clinic was busy. The Senior Council provided the refreshments and supplies this year. I also would like to thank the great group of volunteers that helped to make it a success, namely LeeAnn Haggarty, Heather Sheane, Lynda Mathison, Linda Rutherford, JoAnn Ramsey and Linda Mathison.

On November 24th a group of seniors took the Handivan to Virden to watch the Elf Production. It was a wonderful show and was thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you Edwin Rothnie for having the bus warm and ready at the door, the ladies truly appreciated it!

On Friday, December 20th we will be touring the town of Hamiota to see all the beautiful Christmas lights and decorations that people work so hard at to be enjoyed by all who pass by. Any seniors that would like to ride the bus need to call my office at 204 764-2658 to get your names on one of the 14 seats available. Unfortunately it is a first come first served basis and many thanks to Edwin Rothnie who gives of his time to give us the tour as well as a detailed narrative.

The Grade Three Buddy Program is once again underway and we will be getting together with our buddies again on Wednesday, December 18th for some Christmas fun. What an enthusiastic group of students we have again this year. We are looking forward to a fun-filled schedule of monthly visits.

There will be a lunch at the Lilac Lounge on Tuesday December 31, at 11:30, all seniors are welcome to attend. The cost will be $10.00.

We have our new signs up at the Seniors office. It will be much easier to locate. Thank you to Karl Kliev-er for putting them up.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year. I am thankful for everything that I have and always remember those less fortunate at this time of year. I look forward to whatever comes my way in 2020 and please don`t hesitate to contact my office if you have any inquiries or wish to chat.

Take Your Kid to Work Day - An Educational Experience

Danika Smith

On November 6, grade 9 students from all across Manitoba chose a parent with whom to go to work. Students went to the job site of one of their parents and learned about what they do for a day.

My name is Danika Smith and I went with my mom, Nancy Smith, to the Hamiota Municipal Office in town for “Take Your Kid to Work Day”. I learned some of the tasks she does as the Hamiota Economic Development Officer.

I started my day with a tour of the Hamiota Municipal Office then we got down to work. She taught me how she pays bills and then we made some welcome bags for new people in Hamiota and hand delivered them. We completed other jobs that she does outside the office: updated the bulletin board, revised the map signs, and posted the information on the highway electronic sign. Back in the office, I learned how she creates the Leader every month.

I think my “Take Your Kid to Work Day” experience was very informative and was a valuable learning experience.

Other career opportunities that grade 9 students in Hamiota shadowed were: nursing, plumbing, accounting, farming, and baking to name a few.

The Lions Birthday Calendars are in and available for pick-up at Rawlings Furniture Store. Please try to pick yours up as soon as possible. The cost is $10. There might be some extras for sale if you didn’t order one. The Lions thank everybody who purchased potatoes. Chase the Ace continues at the Hamiota Hotel every Fri. evening 6 to 7 pm.
