Dear Friends,During Advent we prepare for the Christmas Season, which includes Jesus’ birth, his manifestation to the world and the beginning of his public ministry (Christmas, Epiphany and Jesus’ Baptism). Isaiah dominated the First Sunday and today the herald of Jesus, John the Baptist, tells us to prepare the way of the Lord. Advent has a three-fold character. We remember Jesus’ first coming but look forward to his second coming at the end of time. We are also directed to be aware of the many ways Jesus comes to us during our time on this world. Advent is a time of devout waiting and joyful expectation. The pervasive symbol of Advent is silence/darkness, to be followed by the exuberance/light of the Christmas Season. The origins of Advent are found in prehistoric times. Primitive peoples in our hemisphere were awed by the annual disappearance of light and their struggles with cold and darkness. It was a quiet, somber time, a time to wait silently for the first signs of the return of the sun. In other words, people were “keeping advent” long before Christians invented this liturgical season. Advent has its beginnings in the deepest experiences, longings, fears and quests of the human spirit. We moderns are still “afraid of the dark.” Our response is NOT to know darkness, silence and cold as natural to the human condition, but to fight against darkness with a blaze of light and a fury of activity that extends from late October to December 25, when we collapse, exhausted, by our death-defying activity. On December 26 we declare Christmas is over, when, in fact, it is just BEGINNING! Each of us must heed the Baptist’s cry and find a way to prepare the way of the by letting Advent be Advent. We must find the time to contemplate our “sunless” lives and understand why we cry out to the Lord to come to bring us light and life. Only then will we know why and when we celebrate Christmas.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE REMAINDER OF ADVENTKeep homes a little darker and cooler than normal. Keep some visible reminder of Advent in a prominent part of the home. Create a spirit of expectation. Find the quiet time needed to ponder the dark side of the human condition. Record the TV Specials and watch them during the Christmas Season. Have a family discussion each Sunday on the Liturgy and homily of the day. Have your Christmas parties during the Christmas Season. Put up your decorations GRADUALLY during the four weeks, but no lights until Christmas Eve. Keep your decorations up at least until Epiphany. It is okay to send Christmas Cards during the Christmas Season and not weeks ahead of time. Remember the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Try to give gifts throughout the season and not just on December 24-25. Be imaginative! Have your home brighter and warmer during the Christmas Season.

Legion of Mary The Legion of Mary is a lay Catholic organization whose members are giving service to the Church on a voluntary basis in almost every country. EVANGElIZATION 101 WITH

SISTER DIANE MARIE

Many have a devotion to our blessed mother, Mary. This week we celebrate two feasts dedicated to her, The Immaculate Conception which this year is transferred to Monday, December 9th and Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrated on December 12th. She provides us with a perfect example of who an evangelizer is. The gospels reveal her as one who knew what it means to evangelize. She was graced by God with a deep and growing relationship with her son Jesus. Mary was a woman of prayer as seen at the time of the Annunciation, when she said “yes” to God’s request to be the mother of Jesus or when she met her cousin Elizabeth and joyfully praised God, praying the Magnificat or when she prayed with the apostles in the Upper Room as they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit. She listened to her son, learned from him and followed him all the way to Calvary and beyond. Mary was a woman who showed concern for others in a quiet, selfless way. The Wedding Feast at Cana portrays her requesting a favor from her son, Jesus, in order to avoid the young couple and their family the embarrassment of running out of wine. One can just imagine her interaction with her neighbors in Nazareth and her selfless acts of kindness. She was one of the first disciples, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to spread the gospel message and encourage others to fearlessly move forward in faith. When Mary said “yes” to God her whole life was turned upside down. We are called, like our mother, Mary, to say “yes” knowing that our lives will never be the same. Let us pray for the courage to say “yes” to being missionary disciples in our parish, our neighborhood and our world today. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

PARISH ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE

During the season of Advent, we wait in the darkness of winter for Jesus our light to come and fill our hearts with hope and joy. As we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, we are reminded of God’s generous forgiveness and mercy, available to us through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Join us on Tuesday, December 17, at 7 p.m. for a bilingual Advent Reconciliation.

Estimados Amigos,

Durante el Adviento nos preparamos para la temporada navideña, que incluye el nacimiento de Jesús, su manifestación al mundo y el comienzo de su ministerio público (Navidad, Epifanía y Bautismo de Jesús). Isaías habló el primer domingo y hoy el mensajero de Jesús, Juan Bautista, nos dice que preparemos el camino del Señor.

Adviento tiene una triple representación. Recordamos la primera venida de Jesús, pero esperamos su segunda venida al final del tiempo. También se nos indica que seamos conscientes de las muchas formas en que Jesús viene a nosotros durante nuestro tiempo en este mundo. El Adviento es un tiempo de devota espera y alegre expectación. El símbolo dominante de Adviento es el silencio / la oscuridad, seguido de la abundancia / la luz de la temporada navideña.

Los orígenes del Adviento se encuentran en tiempos prehistóricos. Los antiguos pueblos de nuestro hemisferio estaban asombrados por la desaparición anual de la luz y sus luchas con el frío y la oscuridad. Era un momento tranquilo y sombrío, un tiempo para esperar en silencio los primeros signos del regreso del sol. En otras palabras, la gente “mantenía el adviento” mucho antes de que los cristianos inventaran esta temporada litúrgica. El Adviento tuvo sus inicios en las más profundas experiencias, anhelos, miedos y búsquedas del espíritu humano.

Las personas de hoy en día todavía tenemos “miedo a la oscuridad.” Nuestra respuesta es NO saber enfrentarnos a la oscuridad, al silencio y al frío como algo natural para la condición humana; luchamos contra la oscuridad con un resplandor de luz y una furia de actividades que se extienden desde finales de octubre hasta el 25 de diciembre, cuando caemos exhaustos por nuestras actividades que desafían la muerte. El 26 de diciembre declaramos que la Navidad ha terminado, cuando, de hecho, ¡apenas está COMENZANDO!

Cada uno de nosotros debe prestar atención al clamor del Bautista y encontrar una manera de preparar el camino dejando que Adviento sea Adviento. Debemos hacer tiempo para contemplar nuestras vidas “sin sol” y entender por qué le pedimos al Señor para que venga a traernos luz y vida. Solo entonces sabremos por qué y cuándo celebramos la Navidad.

SUGERENcIAS pARA El RESTANTE DE ADVIENTOMantengan sus hogares un poco más oscuros y frescos de lo normal. Mantengan un recordatorio visible de Adviento en una parte prominente de la casa. Desarrollen un espíritu de esperanza. Encuentren momentos de silencio necesarios para reflexionar sobre el lado oscuro de la condición humana. Graben los episodios especiales de televisión y mírenlos durante la temporada navideña. Compartan una discusión familiar todos los domingos sobre la liturgia y la homilía del día. Hagan sus fiestas navideñas durante la temporada navideña. Coloquen sus decoraciones GRADUALMENTE durante las cuatro semanas, pero sin luces hasta la víspera de Navidad. Mantengan sus decoraciones por lo menos hasta la Epifanía. Está bien enviar Tarjetas de Navidad durante la temporada de Navidad y no semanas antes. Recuerden la canción “Los doce días de Navidad”. Intenten dar regalos durante toda la temporada y no solo del 24 al 25 de diciembre. ¡Sean creativos! Hagan que su hogar sea más brillante y cálido durante la temporada navideña.

SISTER DIANE MARIE

Muchos son devotos a nuestra bendita madre, María. Esta semana celebramos dos fiestas dedicadas a ella, La Inmaculada Concepción, que este año se festeja el lunes 9 de diciembre y Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se celebra el 12 de diciembre. Ella nos proporciona un ejemplo perfecto de quién es una evangelizadora. Los evangelios la revelan como alguien que sabía lo que significaba evangelizar. Ella fue agraciada por Dios con una relación profunda y progresiva con su hijo Jesús. María era una mujer de oración como se vio en el momento de la Anunciación, diciendo “sí” cuando Dios le pidió ser la madre de Jesús o cuando se reunió con su prima Isabel y alabaron alegremente a Dios, rezando la Magnífica o cuando rezó con los apóstoles en el aposento alto mientras esperaban la venida del Espíritu Santo. Ella escuchó a su hijo, aprendió de él y lo siguió hasta el Calvario y más allá. María era una mujer bondadosa con los demás de una manera tranquila y desinteresada. El banquete de bodas en Cana la describe pidiéndole un favor a su hijo, Jesús, para evitar que la joven pareja y su familia se avergüencen de quedarse sin vino. Uno puede imaginarse su interacción con sus vecinos en Nazaret y sus actos desinteresados de bondad. Ella fue una de las primeras discípulas, concedida por el Espíritu Santo, para difundir el mensaje del evangelio y animar a los demás a avanzar sin temor en la fe. Cuando María dijo “sí” a Dios, toda su vida cambio. Estamos llamados, como nuestra madre, María, a decir “sí” sabiendo que nuestras vidas nunca serán las mismas. Oremos con valor para decir “sí” a ser discípulos misioneros en nuestra parroquia, nuestro vecindario y nuestro mundo de hoy. María, Madre de la Iglesia, ruega por nosotros.
