Year End Giving Considerations THANK YOU to all who have generously helped to support Saints Peter and Paul this past year. Your thoughtful gifts to our parish and its ministries are a wonderful example of your faith and commitment to our parish community and the Lord. As the end of year approaches this is traditionally considered the season of giving. In addition to gifts we give to the important people in our lives, this season of generosity is also the prime time to show support for the causes we love. When we look back at the days and months of the years and the countless blessings we have received, we hope that you will consider special ways to give back to the Lord for all He has given each of us. There is still time to make a difference with a gift based on your unique situation. Here are a few ideas for consideration during the time that is remaining in 2019. Of course, traditional monetary gifts are always greatly appreciated. • Donate appreciated stock – Gift your appreciated stock and eliminate capital gains tax. Refer to the Parish website

for stock donation instructions. • Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from an IRA (if age 70½ or older) – Regardless of whether you

itemize your taxes, this gift helps you fulfill your IRA required minimum distribution (RMD) and is not considered taxable income. The distribution from the IRA is made directly to Saints Peter and Paul. Contact your IRA fund administrator for specific directions on how they would handle this type of transaction.

• Employer Matching Gifts – Some companies have matching gift programs. If your employer has this type of program, please consider utilizing this program. There are many companies who offer employee matching gift programs for educational purposes.

Please consult your attorney or tax advisor to determine what is best for your unique situation.

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Novena Immaculate Virgin Mary, you were pleasing in the sight of God from the first moment of your conception in the womb of your mother, St. Anne. You were chosen to be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I believe the teaching of holy Mother the Church, that in the first instant of your conception, by the singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race and beloved Son, you were preserved from all stain of original sin. I thank God for this wonderful privilege and grace he bestowed upon you as I honor your Immaculate Conception.

Look graciously upon me as I implore this special favor: (mention your request). Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from your throne in heaven turn your eyes of pity upon me. Filled with confidence in your goodness and power, I beg you to help me in this journey of life which is so full of dangers for my soul. I entrust myself entirely to you, that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, but may always live a humble and pure life. I consecrate myself to you forever, for my only desire is to love your divine Son Jesus. Mary, since none of your devout servants has perished, May I too be saved. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death, Amen.

In this study, Bishop Robert Barron illuminates six biblical stories of conversion, demonstrating how six ordinary people, just like you, were met by Jesus where they were and called to a better life through Him. The common theme in each story is the turning of all one's attention and energy toward an ever deeper, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In his characteristically energetic style, Bishop Barron explains how conversion is not so much a one-time event, but a life-long process. He explains, "Jesus Christ calls us in thousands of different ways to follow Him, as we strive on the path for spiritual excellence."

Each year we welcome the grandparents of our students to come and visit our school. The day before Thanksgiving break approxi-mately 300 grandparents who live nearby, as well as those who had traveled from miles away, were able spend the morning at Saints Peter and Paul School. The first part of the morning our guests were invited to travel around the school and visit the classrooms. Some of the classes were interactive, and in some classes, the grandparents could watch and listen to a new lesson being taught. After touring the school we invited everyone to celebrate the Holy Eucharist as we finished up the morning at an All School Mass. We are very grateful to those who were able to be with us on Grandparents Day!

We Need Your Help! Please prayerfully consider joining our Saints Peter and Paul volunteers to offer an hour of prayerful witness outside of Planned Parenthood on Friday, December 20th. We have volunteers in one-hour shifts from 7am-2pm every third Friday of the month. Your prayers on the sidewalk outside this abortion clinic help support the efforts of pro-life sidewalk counselors to offer abortion-bound mothers the help they need to choose life. Your prayers help open those wom-en’s hearts to life. They may even help convert those working in the abortion clinic. Pray in whatever fashion suits you—Scripture reading, the Rosary, interior prayer, hymns, etc., but pray quietly, to be heard by God and His angels, not passersby. Offer prayers for the abortion-bound women in the clinic. Pray for their babies. Pray for the clinic staff to be converted. Pray for any pro-life counselors who are there. If you see a specific woman enter-ing the clinic, pray for her and whoever has brought her to the clinic that day. Please call Jane Fonner at 630-851-8433 or email [email protected] for more information, or to let her know you are available this month. We can all call upon God to grant us power over the evil of abortion.

BAPTISM INFORMATION

What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God’s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Saints Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Saints Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore, the inability for Saints Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words.1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason.”2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents’ statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1CIC 1983, canon 849. 2CIC 1983, canon 868, 2.

Godparents

When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who “will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it.” This godparent must: • Have completed the sixteenth year.3 • Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation.4

• Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.5

• Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared.6

• Not be the father or the mother.7

A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life.

A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomi-nation may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate.8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female.9 The rela-tionship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological par-ents who are of the same sex so is it impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing your godparents. Your godparents will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godpar-ents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements.

SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on the first Monday of each month beginning at 7:00pm in the Ministry Center. If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby’s baptism. Both mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend. Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office at 630-355-1081. (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Saints Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby’s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to pro-vide a letter of verification.

We baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month at 2:00pm. Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized to four. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $20.00. Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office.

Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than 14 business days prior to the baptismal date or your date may be rescheduled. This includes all necessary information regarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation clas-ses and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and commu-nity, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.

Saints Peter and Paul Youth Ministry

All are invited to break open the words of our gracious and merciful LORD during the Season of Advent by encountering Him in the Sunday Gospels using the practice of lectio divina. A way of praying Scripture that dates back to the early Church, lectio divina is an invitation to enter into silence, to pray the Gospel text, to listen to the text, allow images and memories to unfold, to tend to the invitation to sit in stillness and discern God’s call to you and to discover God’s wisdom that may emerge during the stillness. Lectio will take place from 7-8PM on Thursdays during Advent (12/5, 12/12, 12/19). Sister Maryann Dosen, SSFCR, one of our Sisters here at Ss. Peter and Paul, will guide the weekly sessions. All are welcome – no experience necessary!

FRANCISCAN PILGRIMAGE FOR VETERANS OF THE MILITARY May 21-29 to June 4-12, 2020 (Nine Days)

The service of our veterans to our country has been one of sacrifice. It has taken its toll on their body, spirit, emotions and faith. Re-entering society after living in a life-threatening place is a difficult journey. It is a journey, one of making sense out of situations that seem senseless. In “violence and where life is threatened” one can easily fall into “a culture of death” that questions

God, goodness and the meaning of life. Francis lived in a violent world. He was a prisoner of war for over a year. Through God’s grace he found life and goodness – God’s light shattered all of the darkness of his heart, filling him with a great capacity to love and show compassion. Franciscan Pilgrimage Programs has journeyed with many pilgrims over the years. We believe the path of St. Francis and St. Clare through their own life-threatening experiences may help our veterans make sense out of what they have witnessed and felt. Walk with us. Together we can experience God’s love, a healing of memories and a life in peace. For more information about this and other pilgrimages, call Sr. Maryann at SSPP Convent at 331-401-5125 or the Franciscan Pilgrimage Program Office at 414-427-0570.

NEWS FROM THE KNIGHTS Saint Vincent de Paul Our lives are not entirely our own. They are meant to be shared with others. Life must be used in the service of a cause greater than oneself. Service is never easy. Life is at its

brightest and best when lived in the service of others. Service is love made visible.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-

person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Please call 630-718-2127 to

learn more or to request assistance.

Transitional Housing Ministry

As we enter the Advent season, we ask that you pray for our four Transitional Housing Families, and most especially for their children. This time of year is traditionally the most difficult for our families as their personal struggles are magnified against the significant celebrating that occurs as we approach Christmas. Thank you again for your tremendous support throughout this year. If you have questions about our ministry, or would like to learn more about how you might help the families in need, please feel free to contact Tom Dorn directly at 630-270-7303 or at [email protected].

Come join the SSPP Chapter of World Apostolate of Fatima, USA

We invite you to join us as we increase our devotion to Our Lady of Fatima and bring Our Lady’s Blue Army to Saints Peter and Paul. Our Lady has given us the formula to bring about peace in our times and to save souls from going to Hell.

As Mary instructed the children

at Fatima, we will pray the Rosary and commit to the pledges

Our Lady promised.

Through May, we will meet on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30pm in the Holy Family Chapel in the Ministry Center. We will pray the Rosary and continue to review the Fatima Prayer Cell Program. Please bring your Rosary and, if you did not do so already, $5.00 for the Fatima Prayer Book.

Contact Joan Nocera at 630-484-7320 with any questions.

The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Sunday 9am Friday 12am Monday 1am Saturday 9pm Wednesday 4pm

COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT...

Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7

Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.

EVENING PRAYER AND BENEDICTION

Please join us for Evening Prayer (Vespers) and Benediction, held every Thursday at 6:00pm in the St. Francis Adoration Chapel.

Rosary

Come pray with us on Tuesday evenings

in the Church beginning at 7:30pm.

With our Rosaries, we will ask Our Lady to intercede for our Holy Father’s special intention of the month, as well as for our own intentions, and for world peace without the threat of terrorism. If there is a special intention that you would like to have remembered during the weekly Rosary, please email [email protected] or come to the Tuesday Rosary to add your intention.

Legion of Mary Become acquainted with the Legion of Mary by joining us each Tuesday morning at 10:30am in Room 227 in the Ministry Center in the spirit of faith and in union with our

Blessed Virgin Mary. The Legion of Mary is the largest lay apostolic association of Catholics worldwide who serve the Church by visiting the sick and homebound and by performing many works of promoting our Catholic faith.
