Topic + Insight = Theme
With the topics we just came up with, what does the novel say about each of those topics? What does Harper Lee have to say about them?
In your group, come up with a theme statement for at least 3 of the 6 topics we listed. These will be written on a sheet of notebook paper and turned in at the end of class.
Example (follow this structure) In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the author
shows that topic + insight/claim about topic.
REMEMBER CREATING A THEME STATEMENT?
WHEN STARTING YOUR RESPONSE:
ELIMINATE “I,” “I think,” “I believe” from ALL formal writing.
WRONG: I think Mrs. Dubose shows courage by weaning herself from painkillers.
RIGHT: Mrs. Dubose shows tremendous courage by weaning herself from painkillers.
What action did Uncle Jack take in response to Scout’s use of inappropriate language? Support your answer with evidence from the selection.
Use the linked passage to respond.
PROMPT
In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Uncle Jack took action against Scout's use of inappropriate language by spanking her. After Scout gets home from her and Uncle Jack's interaction she surveys "the damage of seven or eight red marks" on her body. Also when Uncle Jack tries to talk to Scout and she tells him to go away, he responds "he would lick" Scout "again," which implies he spanked her earlier.
