NAWL Congratulates Colonel Maritza Ryan on her Retirement from the U.S. Army
Today Head of the Law Department at the U.S. Military Academy
and former NAWL Board member Colonel Maritza S. Ryan retires
from the U.S. Army.
COL Ryan started her military career by graduating from West
Point in 1982 - no small feat as her class was only the third class
to include women. Following West Point, COL Ryan entered the
Field Artillery but was able to attend and graduate from
Vanderbilt Law School through the Army's Funded Legal
Education Program, perhaps the most selective educational
opportunity in the Army. Selected for her outstanding military
record and academic achievements, the then Captain Ryan was
chosen by the Army's Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps and
later was assigned as a military advisor to a brigade fighting in
Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. Not only was she
one of only a few women in a brigade of 1,000 soldiers, but she
was also a new mother who had to leave her husband and 14-
month old baby at home. In 2001 after a courageous battle with
cancer, COL Ryan returned to West Point as the Deputy of the
Department of Law where she was described as being its heart
and soul.
