Warm Up – What do we know? Diagnostic – 5 Stars• What is photosynthesis?

• What is respiration?

• What do you need for these processes to occur?– Ingredients? End products?

Chemicals? Formula’s?

• How are they related?

Essential Learnings:Photosynthesis and Respiration

1. Understand how cells get their energy

2. Explain in your own words what photosynthesis means

3. Write the “ingredients” and “final products” of photosynthesis in words AND chemical formulas

4. Describe the RESPIRATION process

5. Illustrate this cycle in which ENERGY flows between plants and animals in nature

6. Understand that mass IS conserved in nature

Photosynthesis

Four Ingredients needed- Chloroplasts - part of a plant cell that capture sun’s energy

- Sun – Energy reaches the Earth

- Carbon Dioxide – CO2 - gas in the air – enters plant through the stomata

- Water (H2O) from the soil

Photosynthesis

Two PRODUCTS (end up with)

• A sugar called GLUCOSE

symbol = C6H12O6

• Oxygen gas (O2) (waste product)

Page 7: December 3-4, 2009 Diagnostic for Photo/Resp. Introduce Essentials of Photosynthesis and Respiration Work to be done at Home.

Photosynthesis Equation:

6CO2 + 6H20 C6H12O6 + 6O2

carbon water sugar oxygendioxide

• On a global scale, photosynthesis is the most important process to the welfare of life on Earth.– Each year photosynthesis synthesizes 160 billion

metric tons of sugars per year.

6 waters + 6 carbon dioxides will make 1 sugar

molecule and 6 oxygen molecules

Introduction to Respiration

Process in which animals CONVERT stored energy in sugars to put to use for living (movement etc)

• Need 2 things Oxygen and Sugar

• Results in Energy, Carbon Dioxide and Water

• Lab Write-Up– Problem Statement– Hypothesis– Materials – Procedures – refer to page 54– Data

• Data table– Conclusion

• Answer Analyze and Conclude # 1,2,3,4

Explain BTB

• Indicator that changes color based on pH

• Carbon Dioxide is an acid

• Adding Carbon Dioxide changed the pH of the solution

• Blue if pH>6.8

• Clear/Yellow if pH < 6.8

Respiration equation:

glucose dioxide

The Cycle

Products of Photosynthesis (plant happy and growing)

Sugars and Oxygen

Respiration – Energy for organism produced

Product of Respiration – (animals healthy and happy)

Water and Carbon Dioxide

Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts

Eat sugars and use oxygen to respire or breathe

Waste products are

Chloroplasts capture suns energy

Illustrate the Process

• Develop a Poster that represents the Photosynthesis and Respiration Cycle

• Criteria:– Show the connection between the Sun, plants

and animals.– Include names and Chemical formulas for each

“ingredient” or “product”– Properly “Name” each step of the process– Include how many of each “part” are required to

make the process work

Time to Summarize

• All voices will be heard and shared

• Compact all your thoughts related to your prompt into 4 or LESS words and then prepare to share..

• Example: Tarheels take it all!

• Surfing…say no more!

Journal Entry #2

Use your journal notes to answer the following questions

1. What 4 ingredients are needed for photosynthesis to occur?

2. What is the result (products) of photosynthesis?

3. What is cell respiration? What is needed? What is produced?

4. How are photosynthesis and respiration connected (cycle)

Page 18: December 3-4, 2009 Diagnostic for Photo/Resp. Introduce Essentials of Photosynthesis and Respiration Work to be done at Home.

Demo to get kids thinking

1. Make observations of the solution in the beaker?

2. What will happen when Ms. Keever drinks the solution?

3. What will happen if Mr. Blank blows through the straw into the solution?

4. Conduct Demo5. Record observations and try to

explain it.
