FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA

Is Family that Important?

We have probably all heard of children experiencing severe difficulties being raised in their families. Children certainly can be badly effected by poverty, alcohol or drug abuse, bitter arguments between husband and wife, etc. Some people may even wonder, “Why should children be entrusted to a family at all? Wouldn’t children be better off in an institution, raised by professional educators and licensed social workers?” Yet the great importance of family cannot be denied from the central mystery of our faith and our life, that the One God is Himself Three Divine Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. From before time began, God-the-Father, with life-giving love, eternally gives life to His Son. God-the-Son eternally loves His Father in return. And from the perfect love between the Father and the Son, proceeds the Holy Spirit. The Original Family, Three Persons related to each other and united in perfect love, teaches us that we come from family and our fulfillment is to be found in family.

When the time came for God-the-Son to become one of us, He could have come down from heaven fully grown as an adult man. He could easily have avoided the hardships of family life by coming to this earth as a fully grown adult. As we know, He did not choose that easy way. Instead He chose to enter this world as a tiny unborn baby inside of His mother Mary and to be totally dependent upon others in His early years. He chose to become a little child, to put Himself in obedience to Joseph and to Mary, mere human beings whom He Himself had created. Jesus chose to spend the first 30 years of His life in the hardships, joys and loving unity of a human family, the Holy Family of Nazareth. Since God chose to be a member of a human family, there is no doubt that the family is a most important part of God’s plan for all of us!

Holiness, however, may not be as evident in our own families, since we probably are not yet all saints! If all the members of our family were perfect, life would certainly be a lot easier. But then how would we learn compassion, patience and mercy? If we were perfect, how would we learn to bear with one another? If we never made mistakes, how would we learn to forgive others as God forgives us? If the Word of Christ dwells in us, and if we spend some time every day in sincere prayer, we will come to see that every hardship of family life offers us an opportunity to grow in God’s own love, and to help the other members of our family to grow in God’s love. Fathers and mothers, remember that your most important job is to help your entire family to get to heaven. Health is important, education is important and a good job is important, but what good are those things if your family is not one day forever united with God in His Family? Show your children a good example by always putting God first, by praying every day (even a few minutes together as a family) and by participation in Holy Mass on the weekend. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the Holy Family of Nazareth, help our families to grow in God’s love so that we will be more united to Him and to each other. Amen.

Eucharist. The Holy Mass. For Catholics, this is often a sacrament they’ve participated in nearly every week of their lives. For non-Catholics, it is a foreign rite that many are cautious to approach. In both groups there is a varied understanding of the Eucharist and what the Church teaches about this sacrament, described as the “source and summit of the Christian life.” Over the course of this study, Dr. Brant Pitre will take us back to the biblical roots of the Eucharist. Together we’ll see how this sacrament is deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture. We’ll explore its origins, its foreshadowing in the many mysterious and miraculous events of the Old Testament and gospels, and the essential purpose and reality of Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper. In the end, we’ll examine how the Eucharist is not just a something, but rather Someone with whom we are meant to be in communion. Class dates: Thursdays, January 9 - March 12, 2020 Class time: 7PM - 8:30PM Workbook required - $10 cost per workbook (spouses can share workbook) Number of classes: 10 Registration Deadline: Friday January 3, 2020 *If you have any questions on the course please contact Carlos Guzman at 210-316-5950. *

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and

free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
