Husband Jailed For 16YrsFor Wife's Murder

As he stabbed his wife 22 times, sherepeatedly apologised and begged himto stop. Now he has been jailed for atleast 16 years.A man who repeatedly stabbed his wife

to death while she pleaded with him tostop has been sentenced to at least 16years in prison.Fijian born Adi Cavora BaleimaleaBoe Tavuki died at Narrabeen caravan

park in Sydney's northern beaches inOctober 2012 after she was stabbed 22times in the face, chest and abdomen

by her husband, Ratu Serutawake. The Supreme Court heard that whileshe was being attacked, the nursingassistant repeatedly said she was sorryand begged for him to stop. But it was only when the handle of theknife broke off that he did.In sentencing him, Acting JusticeJane Mathews said the murder wascompletely out of character for

Serutawake, who now suffers from post-traumatic stress as a result of whathe had done.Serutawake told police he had killedhis wife after an argument broke out

between them early on October 21.She had started throwing things andsmashing things, had punched him andat one point threatened to leave. After a second argument in which she

smashed something else, Serutawakesaid he snapped."I didn't plan it that way ... we weresupposed to celebrate her birthdaytoday. I'm so sorry for what I've done,"he told police that afternoon. He had pleaded not guilty to murderon the basis of self-defence and

provocation, but this was rejected by a jury who found him guilty in Octoberthis year.Acting Justice Mathews said hisresponse was "completely out of

proportion" to his wife's actions."Far too many killings occur in adomestic setting such as this, and it isincumbent upon the courts to imposesentences which will hopefully operate

to deter others from behaving in asimilar way in the future."She sentenced him to a minimum of16 years and a maximum of 20. Hisearliest date of release is October 2028.

Bollywood Deal Set To Transform Fiji Into Hub ForIndian Film Productions

Fiji could be transformed into aBollywood production hub after asix- lm deal was struck by a Nadi

production house and a Bollywoodlm studio.

Bollywood lms are wildly popular inFiji, partly due to its large ethnic Indianminority.About 40 per cent of Fijians are ofIndian descent.Stardom Entertainment andPromotions director Mohammed Khanhas established a partnership withIndia's Once More Studios, which hehopes will bring the world's biggest

lm industry to Fiji for the long haul.He says he has six productions in the

pipeline with a view for many more."Through our partnership with OnceMore Studios, we can do a lot, we can

bring a lot more movies," he said."We've got some major productionscoming up soon, big banner movies."

Though Bollywood lms have been produced in Fiji before, Mr Khan saysthis deal will establish a long-running

partnership between Bollywood andFiji.West Indian producer-directorJaykishan Patel is making his nextthree lms in Fiji.He said he had always dreamed of

lming in the island nation."One of my childhood dreams was tovisit Fiji, and Fiji is the perfect locationfor our script and story," Mr Patel said.Shooting on Mr Patel's lm DesiDhamal - Pagal Panti began this week.He was also planning a horror movieand a romantic comedy in Fiji.Bollywood is the world's biggest lm

industry, producing hundreds of lms per year shot across the globe."Bollywood industry is going likeanything nowadays and more than 300movies are made in Bollywood [peryear], with more than 1,000 movies

made in India," Mr Patel said.He said Fiji's huge Indian populationmade it a natural t for Hindu directors."Indian population is there in Fiji sothat is also one of the good points thatmany lmmakers, and I think manytalents from Fiji, extras and crewmembers will get chance to work inlots of movies," he said. The deal is set give a huge boost to thelocal industry. Mr Khan said Fijianswill make up 70 per cent of the castand crew."Actually we want to utilise [locals] asmuch as possible, we want utilise ourFiji people who have talents in thesethings," he said.

"We are also planning to open an actingschool here soon, so later on we'llhave our own photographers, assistantdirectors and stuff."Bureaucracy creating hurdles for

lmmakers

Mr Khan said he has been greatlysupported by government lm industry

body Film Fiji."The government has been verysupportive of what I'm doing, and theyknow, they commend my work," hesaid. But Mr Khan said some of his

producers had complained about the project approval process."There are some hurdles in thegovernment, for example when these

people lodged their application forrebate pre-approval, they had to submita lot of stuff," he said."To promote Fiji, the Fiji governmentshould do something to fast-track this

application."Film Fiji provides rebates and other taxincentives for foreign lmmakers, butthese come with many requirementsand conditions.Mr Khan said the process was taking

too long, and said it may deter forelmmakers when they should

encouraged."I gave them a lot of incentive, I hto promote Fiji, to get them to Fiji

shoot," he said."So [the government] needs to chansome legislation in Fiji as well

promote Bollywood movies."But Fiji Film CEO Dallas Fsaid Mr Khan had still not provisuf cient documentation to apprthe projects, and had announced soof the productions prematurely."It is generally ethical for AV ageto not make announcements ab

productions until they have receivapproval to proceed to production,"said in an email. He believed it was in many ways easfor foreign lms to get approved, long as they met the requirements."Any approved production for

has to meet certain criteria and documentation submitted has provide suf cient credible detailsupport the application," he said."These requirements are actually anymore different from most other commissions, in fact it is much easin most respects."In Mohammed's case, he is a rst tiaudio visual agent and his applicatiostill had basic detail pending befwe could start evaluating. We are sawaiting this information (eg. a budin Fiji dollars, etc)."Mr Patel said the approval procwas standard procedure around world so he did not think it would de

lmmakers.

"No, I don't have any problem, thea legal procedure that's required,"said."It takes a bit of time but it takeseverything. I don't think there's issue with the rebate scheme."

It’s no contest. Voreqe Bainimaramais our 2014 Fiji Sun Person of the

Push For Minimum WageHike Renewed In BC

South of the border, 20 US states will be seeing increases to their minimumwages on New Year’s Day, and herein this province, the BC Federation ofLabour is making a push of its own forour province’s minimum wage workersto get a raise. When former BC Teachers Federation

president Irene Lanzinger won lastmonth’s election to become the

president of the BC Fed, she statedone of her main goals is to bump BC’sminimum wage to $15 an hour.“We know one of the ways that we

produce greater equity in our societyis to raise the minimum wage to get

better wages and bene ts for workers,”says Lanzinger.

That’s up from the current $10.25an hour wage for BC’s lowest paidworkers.“There is no downside to raising theminimum wage,” Lanzinger says.“It lifts people out of poverty. It putsmoney into the economy, because

people who earn $15 an hour generallyspend all of that money.”BC’s current minimum wage was putinto place in May of 2012, but the BCFed argues that isn’t high enough for

people to pay their bills.Critics suggest a higher minimum wagewould put a strain on some businesses, andcould cause layoffs. Other say increasingthe minimum wage only results in anincrease in the price of goods.

What Foods Really HelpShed KilosA PROFESSOR has shared his years of

research into what foods really keep offthe kilos, and the results may surpriseyou.Eating unripe bananas, avoidingmashed potatoes, skipping the tofu andavoiding sweet smoothies can all helpdieters maintain a healthy weight.Eat green bananasDieters should eat green, unripe

bananas, which are high in resistantstarch, which doesn’t cause blood-sugar to spike, meaning it doesn’ttrigger hunger. It also encourages therelease of hormone glucagon, whichmakes us burn fat faster.Skip the mashed potatoesAvoiding sugar is key to losing weight. And 25 per cent more sugar is releasedfrom a potato when it is boiled andmashed, compared to cutting it intochips. The way we prepare food oreven how much we have to chew them, can have a huge effect on the sugarreleased into the blood. Heating andmashing starches turns them into sugar.Drink more waterDrinking water can help reduce

back pain and keep the weight off byreducing dehydration.Go easy on tofu

Tofu is made from soy beans thatcontain phytic acid, which can blockthe absorption of essential minerals.Vegetarians who rely on tofu as a meatsubstitute should follow the Japanese’sexample and eat it with miso, whichcontains bacteria that lowers the acid.Don’t be afraid to eat fatToo many of us have shunned highfat foods in favour of re ned carbslike rice, pasta and bread, which don’tleave people feeling sated. Instead, meals that are high fat promotehormone glucagon, which promotesthe breakdown of fat.Skip sugary smoothiesSugary drinks and treats like fruit

juices and smoothies contain highlevels of fructose, the sugar found inhigh-fructose corn syrup. Unlike othersugars, fructose slips past our insulinsystem, which normally controlssugar getting into the bloodstream andcontrol appetite. That means fat buildsup in the liver, causing obesity anddiabetes. But controlling your hunger is far moreuseful to dropping kilos than countingcalories. Eat foods high in protein andfat, which are digested more slowlyand keep us feeling fuller for longer

Eat Oranges To Lose WeightSweet and juicy to taste, orange is one ofthe most popular fruits. RelationshipHow To Get Rid Of FacialHair

There are many ways of removingfacial hair. The method should bechosen according to quantity orthickness, location and rate of growth.Read on to nd out more temporarymethods of facial hair removal.PluckingThis method involves the use oftweezers and removes hair from thefollicles. Therefore, re-growth takestime. Plucking is suitable for strayhairs on the chin, between and underthe brows. It should not be used forhair on the upper lip. The area should

be rst wiped with cotton wool, soakedin a mild antiseptic solution. Oneshould also take care not to pluck outhair from a mole, before consulting adoctor.ThreadingIt's the most common method ofremoving facial hair. The disadvantageis that the effect is temporary andthe procedure has to be repeated

periodically. It is useful for areas likethe upper lip and the eyebrows. Infact, threading is done to shape theeyebrows. Frequentthreading can cause skin irritations. Onsensitive skins, there can be rednessor a rash. Avoid threading on areaswith eruptions, like pimples or acne. Azinc ointment or ice can be applied tosoothe the skin.WaxingMany beauty salons offer "katori"waxing for facial hair. Cold wax would

be safer for the face. Waxing strips areavailable. However, large areas of theface should not be waxed. It would begood for smaller areas like the chin, area above the lips or sideburns. Forexcessive facial hair, many womenuse a combination of methods, likethreading chin and area above lipsand bleaching the rest of the face.Or, threading chin and upper lip andwaxing sideburns.EpilatorAn epilator is a small gadget for hairremoval. Epilators for facial hair aredifferent from the ones for body hair. The effect lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks.Epilators pull out the hair by the roots. It is said that the smallest hair can beremoved with an epilator. There is

some initial pain, which may decreasegradually.ElectrolysisAlthough this is said to be a permanentmethod of hair removal, re-growth canoccur. In electrolysis, the diathermymethod was common. It involves theuse of ne needles, through which anelectric current is passed. But now anew procedure is being used, knownas transdermal electrolysis, in whichneedles are not used. Also, super uoushair can be removed from larger areas. In the earlier method, needles wereintroduced into the hair follicle tocauterise the hair root. This checkedre-growth. It is extremely important tomake inquiries, as scarring can occurin the hands of an unskilled operator.LaserThis is the latest method of permanentremoval of facial hair. Laser producesan intense beam of light, which isabsorbed by the hair follicles. Thelaser disables the hair follicle's abilityto produce hair. Cooling devices areused to prevent damage to the rest ofthe skin. The advantage of laser overelectrolysis is that the laser light canscan broader areas. Therefore, fewersessions are required. However, itis more expensive than electrolysis.Re-growth occurs in some cases,

but is slower and scantier. It is veryimportant to nd a good laser clinic. The temporary known side effects areredness, swelling and itching. The mainrisk in laser treatment is the possibilityof skin burns. So, before choosingthe clinic, it is essential to nd outits reputation, by making inquiriesand talking to people who have beenthrough the treatment.Home remediesFor very ne hair, scrubs and exfoliationcan help. This would discourage hairgrowth over a period of time, if usedregularly. Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it inthe direction of hair growth. Wash offwhen it dries. Apply it once or twicea week. Apply a paste of turmeric

powder and milk and rub this on theskin with a circular motion. It is said todiscourage facial hair, but it may leavea yellowish tinge on the skin.

How To Roast A Turkey

The essential guide to making a turkeydinnerTurkey is the centrepiece of the holidaydinner table, and one of the mostanticipated avours of the season. But

cooking a turkey with all the xingscan be a daunting task. We've takenthe guesswork out of your celebrationthis year with our complete guide to aturkey feast. From preparing, roastingand carving the bird, to stirring up tastystuf ng and making rich gravy, we'vegot each step covered.1. BuyingBuy one pound per person. You may

want to buy a fresh turkey, as opposedto frozen, to avoid days of thawing.2. ThawingThaw turkey in unopened wrapper,

breast-side up, on a tray in the

refrigerator. For every four pounds ofturkey, allow one day of thawing.3. PreparingRemove neck and excess fat and gibletsfrom chest cavity. Rinse cavities andoutside of turkey with cold water. Blotwith paper towels.Season cavity and area under the skinwith salt, pepper and herbs. Try poultryseasoning, thyme, sage or marjoram.

Stuff the bird with prepared Stove TopStuf ng Mix.Help turkey cook evenly by making itas compact as possible. Tuck legs intoring of skin that they were originallyin when you unwrapped bird. Fold rst

joint of wings underneath bird's back. You can make gravy even more

avourful by cooking turkey on a bedof quartered carrots, celery and onions.Brush skin with vegetable oil to preventit from drying out during roasting.Insert a meat thermometer deep into thethickest part of the thigh next to the body.Make sure it does not touch the bone.4. CookingPlace in foil roasting pan and bake at325°F for required time. There's noneed to baste - the natural juices willseal in tenderness.Check bird after indicated cooking time. The internal temperature should registerat least 170°F on a meat thermometer.Thigh juices should run clear, not pink, when pierced with a fork, and leg jointshould move freely when cooked.5. RestingRemove turkey from oven. Placeon cutting board resting in a largecafeteria-style tray with a lip or on a

at aluminum foil tray.Tent the cooked turkey with foil. Letstand for 30-45 minutes. This resting

time allows the juices to saturate meat evenly for the most tender turk6. Stuf ngStove Top Stuf ng is great prepaon the side and you can make as muas you need - you're not limited by size of your turkey.Prepare Stove Top Stuf ng according to package directions.Add in a few handfuls once the whas boiled. Some add-ins to try: choppdried fruit, Kraft Shredded Chechopped toasted nuts, orange segmechopped cranberries, grated apples, pecarrots or zucchini, cooked sausage.7. Carving1. Start by removing the wings.2. To remove legs, pull back legexpose the joint while you cut. Thcut through the joinT.3. Cut each breast off the turkeya whole piece. Make an incision either side of breast bone and cut aloribs until the breast is free.Remove any other large portionsmeat still attached to the bones. The remaining carcass can be pickapart the next day for use in sandwicor soups. Simply wrap up in aluminfoil and refrigerate.Choosing the right-sized turkey knowing exactly how much time yneed can be challenging.

Devils Fire Head CoachDeboer

The New Jersey Devils have been ona slide since going to the Stanley Cup

nal in 2012, and coach Pete DeBoer paid the price.DeBoer, who took the Devils to thechampionship round in his rst season, was red today, with his aging andshort-handed team in danger of missingthe playoffs for a third straight season.Lou Lamoriello, the Devils' presidentand general manager, won't say whowill be the next coach until he speaksSaturday with the players, who areon a three-day Christmas break. TheDevils will have a pregame skate at thePrudential Center on Saturday morning

before playing the Rangers in NewYork that night. There are a number of potentialcandidates, including Adam Oates, aformer Devils assistant; Dallas Eakins, who was red earlier this month byEdmonton; and former Penguins coachDan Bylsma.Lamoriello has hired a couple offormer Montreal Canadiens coaches tolead New Jersey, and Jacques Martinhas been in the press box to watch theDevils in their last three home games. He was an assistant under Bylsma lastseason and was promoted to senioradviser of hockey operations.

New Jersey has been hit with injuriesin a 12-17-7 season. It has not wonconsecutive games since early lastmonth, going 3-8-5 in its last 16. TheDevils were missing six regulars toeither injury or illness Tuesday nightwhen they lost 2-1 in a shootout tothe Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL'ssecond-worst team."I know that no one wants to hearexcuses, and I am not going to makeany, but I am de nitely not going tothrow our guys under the bus," DeBoersaid Tuesday. "Guys are trying."The problem is the guys are not astalented as they used to be, and it showsin the standings. The Devils are 14th in

the Eastern Conference, nine points outof a playoff berth and fading.

New Jersey has 15 players over the ageof 30 on the roster, including 42-year-old Jaromir Jagr, who is tied for theteam lead in scoring. Not only are theyold, but the Devils have not gottenmuch help from their minor leaguesin recent years. Defenceman AdamLarsson, the fourth pick overall in2011, has been a disappointment, andStephane Matteau, the rst-round pickthe following season, has one goal withthe Devils' top af liate this season.DeBoer is the third NHL coach to

be red this season, following PaulMacLean in Ottawa and Eakins.DeBoer was 114-93-41 in his three-

plus seasons with the Devils. Beforecoming to New Jersey, he coached theFlorida Panthers for three years, nevermaking the playoffs. The 46-year-old DeBoer was hiredin 2011-12 and immediately took theDevils to the Stanley Cup nal, wherethey lost to the Los Angeles Kings. The Devils, however, lost Zach Pariseto free agency after the season. Theytook an unexpected blow after thelockout-shortened 2012-13 seasonwhen goal-scorer Ilya Kovalchuk leftto play in Russia. Those were the team'stwo best players, and their losses werekeenly felt, especially in shootouts. The Devils were 0-13 in shootouts lastseason and 2-6 this season, their rstsince not re-signing goaltender MartinBrodeur, the longtime face of the three-time Stanley Cup champions.DeBoer had provided some stabilityto the Devils' coaching position. Sincewinning their last Cup in 2003 under PatBurns, the Devils have changed coachesnine times, with only Brent Sutter lastingtwo full seasons until DeBoer camealong. During that span, Lamoriello hastwice lled in on an interim basis andJacques Lemaire has twice come out ofretirement to coach the team.
