1st Christmas Classics a success

Winter officially begins tonight at 9:48 P.M. Teword solstice comes rom the Latin words or “sun” and“to stand still.” In the Northern Hemisphere, as summeradvances to winter, the points on the horizon where theSun rises and sets advance southward each day; the highpoint in the Sun’s daily path across the sky, which occursat local noon, also moves southward each day.  At the winter solstice, the Sun’s path has reachedits southernmost position. Te next day, the path wiladvance northward. However, a ew days beore andafer the winter solstice, the change is so slight that theSun’s path seems to stay the same, or stand still. Te Sunis directly overhead at “high-noon” on Winter Solsticeat the latitude called the ropic o Capricorn.  Question: Why is there such a time lag betweenthe shortest day o the year (shortest amount o daylighthours) and the lowest average daily temperature o theyear?   Answer:  Tis is the shortest day o the yearmeaning the one in which we experience the leastamount o daylight in 24 hours; it is also the time when

the Sun reaches its southernmost point in the skyAlthough this part o Earth is cooling, its great thermamass still retains some heat rom the summer and allAs the gradual cooling process continues over the nexttwo months, temperatures will continue to all, and thecoldest temperatures will be recorded. Te same patternholds true or the summer solstice in June, as the year’shighest temperatures are recorded later, in July andAugust.  “A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.”–Steve Martin
