There has been so much valuable learning happening in Room 2! We have been keeping very busy in the month of November. In math, we have continued working on our number sense from 0-10. Everyday we play fun games that include building and writing numbers! Encourage your child to show you the different ways of representing numbers 0-10. You can also play fun games at home like the Domino Challenge! To play you will need dominoes... Both players turn over one domino and identifies the amount of dots total. The player with the greater amount takes both of the dominoes. If the two dominoes have the same number of dots, they both turn over another domino. The player with the greater amount takes all four dominoes. Keep playing until you run out of dominoes. The winner is the player with the most dominoes! Each day we enjoy reading a story together. It has been so exciting to discover that we are all readers! We have been doing an excellent job recognizing sight words and growing as book detectives by looking at pictures if we are stuck on a word we don’t know. Encourage your child to continue reading at home! A great start is reading environmental print around you (ex. stop sign, Lego, Barbie, Cheerios, etc.). We also have started exploring different letters of the week! Each week we are introduced to a new letter and each day we have a theme. One day we focus on identifying

the letter, another day we focus on writing it and then on another day we focus on the sound it makes! Each day we also answer a fun “Question of the Day” following the letter theme of the week. So far we have explored the letters Aa, Mm, Tt, Pp and Oo. We look forward to continuing to spend time outside every day, so please remember to pack ski pants, hat, mitts, scarf/neck warmer, boots and a warm sweater to put under a winter jacket. One of our favorite activities outside is tobogganing down the hill on our playground! It is going to be even more fun with more snow in December! We are also super excited to share student’s celebration of learning at Student-Led Conferences over the phone or Google Meets. We have been working hard on our online portfolios to share our growth as a kindergarten student! So much more fun activities are planned for December. We are looking forward to continuing to learn and grow together!

Room 1 is having a great year! We are exploring our oral communication development, which will lead to every student becoming a great writer. During the morning question, I have been challenging the students to not simply answer my questions with a one word answer, but rather with a complete sentence. A challenge for home will be to continue to get every student to use their words when asking for something or when answering a question. We are continuing to learn the letters of the alphabet. A challenge for home will be to show your child the alphabet in a random order and have your student tell you the scrambled alphabet. We have also been starting our reading workshops in Room 1 and I wanted to let you all know that every student is a reader! Reading pictures and environmental print is the first step in reading and will lead into students being able to read words. A challenge for home will be to have your child read a book to you at home. In math we are continuing to practice our counting up to 30, as well as from 10-0. We are also focusing on playing some games with dice, dominos, and fingers. These games are crucial for students to recognize the numbers instantly and really become familiar with what these numbers represent. Thank you for helping your child have a great November, looking forward to a great next month!

Wow, I can’t believe it is already December!! It has been a busy month for students of room 8! We have started our nonfiction reading and writing units! Students are choosing topics they are experts on writing an information piece to teach their readers. Students are learning about nonfiction text features and gaining more knowledge everyday. We have started the Home Reading Program, please take the time to read with your child and ask questions before, during and after you or your child are finished reading the book. Asking comprehension questions helps your child understand the meaning of the story, process the text and make personal connections with the story. In math, we are learning to use different mental math strategies when solving addition and subtraction problems. They are modeling and communicating their strategies during daily number talk lessons. We are practicing our skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s and counting forwards and backwards from 100. Dreambox is a great way to add extra math practice at home. https://play.dreambox.com/login/d7qd/lords If you are not connected to your child’s Seesaw account, please let me know. I can walk you through those steps. Students are excited to share what they are doing in the classroom. Please have your child practice a few seesaw activities at home using their individual Seesaw class QR code. Let me know if you need their QR code printed. A reminder, as the outside temperatures start to drop, please make sure your child is coming to school with a hat, snow pants, mittens and scarf. It is important for your child be on time and attend school everyday to ensure they are receiving the academic instruction they need to be successful at school. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and fun winter break. Take some time to unwind and spend time with your loved ones. I will see everyone in January 2021. Happy New Years!

Ms. Mulvenna Grade 1 Room 4

Wow! December! We have been so busy here in Room 4 this past month. We have narrowed down our Roots & Shoots project for the year! We went on a few community walks with Room 8 to see how we can help the community; focussing on either the people, environment or animals that occupy the Elmwood neighbourhood. On one walk to the river, we noticed a lot of litter on the ground. We are very concerned about what this can do to the animals that live within our community. We have decided to narrow our focus to help with this issue. Throughout the rest of the school year, we will be writing to people within our community to help us keep our animals safe. In math, we are continuing to work on various strategies that help us solve addition and subtraction math problems. Some strategies include “make 10”, counting on/back, and doubles! We are also learning our compatible pairs to 10 & 20 which will also help us solve various addition/subtraction problems. As well, we are continuing to work on representing numbers in different ways (building it with math tools, and representing on paper). In writing, we have begun our new writing unit! We have started to learn about writing information books! We are learning that authors of information books are experts about the topic they are writing about. As well, we are learning to label our pictures to help teach our readers more about our illustrations. We can’t wait to showcase our writing at student led conferences! In reading, we are delving into a variety of strategies that help us solve tricky words when we are reading. As well, we are learning different sight words through poems every morning that help us quickly navigate through snap words when we read! We review our word wall daily to help us with our fluency.

Ms. Tien Grade 2 & 3 Room 15

Room 15 is currently working on an Exploring the World research project. We will be discovering the life of people from different countries, identifying how life has changed for them over time and studying their culture and customs. We will also be holding art talks about the art from these countries and creating our own world art pieces. This will also tie into our study of structures and materials in Science, where we will investigate how buildings and bridges are made and what they are made out of. In Writer’s Workshop, we have begun our Writing About Books Unit. During this unit, students will have the opportunity to write about beloved books in ways that persuade others to love them as much as they do. Encourage your children to form opinions about the books they read at home, thinking deeply about characters, favourite parts and retelling important points. Math is all about money this month! We will investigate the organization of money, how to count money and problem solve with money. This will help us with grouping numbers and repeating addition. I hope that everyone has a wonderful and restful winter break! Please also take some time to read together and gather more tokens on Dreambox! Happy holidays everyone and stay safe!

The past month has been a busy one in Room 17 (or 3…). We spent a good deal of time adjusting to our new space and figuring out how to stay two meters apart while still working together. The students have been hard at work in math, learning about place value and adding 2 digit numbers. In writers workshop, they have been busy writing realistic fiction stories to share at conference time. I have enjoyed reading about their made up characters. We have worked hard on reading strategies such as blending sounds, as well as on sight word practice and learning about nouns! The students in Room 17 are very hard workers and impress me every day with their hard work and focus. They completed a life cycle project for science as well as a mapping project for social studies! Our Roots and Shoots community map is now complete and I have posted photos on Seesaw! Great work, Room 17! A reminder to please take some time to log your child on to Seesaw at home and try out a few activities using their Home Learning Code( if you have not yet done so.) This is very important in the event that schools have to switch over to a code red situation - Seesaw will be the platform students will use for learning from home. If you have lost the code or need any help with logging them on, please let me know! I am more than happy to help out!

Ms. Stern Grade 2 Room 17

In our Writer’s Workshop students learned that writer’s draw readers in by telling stories in scenes. Writers make their storytelling voices stronger by making a mental movie of what happened and tell it in small detail, so that the reader can see, hear, and feel everything. Students wrote stories to show exact actions and exact words the people in their story said. In Math, students continue to practice strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. They learned to use basic facts to 10 to add and subtract tens and hundreds. Students discussed in groups what “peace” means to them, as part of our Social Studies theme. They wrote their ideas to match their images of peace. Students listened to and read stories with a theme on “kindness”. Later, students wrote about how classmates had shown “acts of kindness”.

Ms. Ladouceur Grade 4 Room 40

The rock stars of Room 40 had a terrific month in November. We were inspired by the Love Grows Postcard Project and decided to join the initiative. The students in Room 40 wrote hopeful messages or upcycled motivational quotes from old calendars to create one of a kind pieces of art on postcards. The postcards are going to be delivered to front line workers around Winnipeg and seniors in care homes. Some postcards are on the wall of the staff room in St. Boniface Hospital Emergency. In addition, we have been taking community walks to drop off postcards to businesses in our community. We are in the process of deciding whether or not to continue the Postcard Project for our Roots and Shoots Project this year. If you would like to read more, we were featured on the Winnipeg School Division Website. Here is the link: https://www.winnipegsd.ca/about%20wsd/news/pages/lord-selkirk-is-spreading-the-love.aspx I am so proud of Room 40 and their kind hearts! In math, students are learning different strategies for subtracting three digit numbers from four digit numbers. In our Writer’s Workshop, students have been writing up a storm, focusing on the elements of a story (plot, characters, setting, and using figurative language). Keep up the hard work Room 40!

Room 35 have been working very hard on their small moments stories this month. We are starting to publishing our stories and can't wait to share them during our Student Led Conferences on December 3rd and 4th! Thank you to all of the families that regularly check their child's Seesaw profile. It means so much to them when you like or leave a comment on their work. We have been practicing using Seesaw everyday in class just in case we need to move to home learning for any reason. Students are gaining confidence adding text, pictures, and recording their voice. At home it would be great if they could practice working on activities. I want them to try and troubleshoot any problems that may arise using a different device from what they use at school. As the weather is now cold, please make sure your child is prepared in the morning with appropriate clothing for the day. Please contact me if you have not paid student fees this year ($35) so we can make arrangements.

Mr. Telford Grade 3 & 4 Room 35

Ms. Quincy Grade 3 Room 36

Hello Families of Room 36! We have been working together to finalize a research project about Canada. Each student has chosen a province or territory and began to collect information. After, students then drew a picture of the flag and used water colour to paint the provincial or territory flower. We have combined all of our information into a green screen video where students are able to put themselves in that place and share their learning. We are excited to share our final projects during student-led. In math, we have started to learn about fractions and where in life we see and

use fractions. Students have been looking around us to notice fractions. We even saw fractions in our artwork while creating our self portraits. Room 36 is excited to share all of their hard work with their families during Student-Led conferences. As a reminder, as the weather gets colder, please make sure your child comes dressed according to the weather everyday. Please make sure they have a warm jacket, gloves, hat, boots and ski-pants. We continue to go outside daily for different activities and it is important students are dressed appropriately so they can participate and have fun.

Welcome to room 30/the library! Let us (Ben and Cam) tell you what kind of shenanigans we’ve been getting up to. In math we’ve been doing fractions as a whole and we’ve been having a special guest by the name of Mr.McMahon. He has been giving us strange math questions like make every number between 0 and 10 with only four fours. An example is 4/4 + 4/4 = 2. In writing we’ve turned our writing into comics and most of them are pretty good. In Science we have been working on growing two tomatoes, one that has been exposed to space and one that has not been exposed to space and we are seeing if they grow differently. Thank you for reading.

Mr. Shannon Grade 5 & 6 Room 32

Ms. Hasanally Grade 6 Room 30

Room 25 had a terrific November, full of learning! Students did a wonderful job exploring our community to identify areas which we would like to improve for animals, people, and the environment. We then used our amazing Minecraft skills to map out our school and community. Our Roots and Shoots project is beginning to take shape, ask about our vermicomposting bin! In Math we have begun our exploration of rational number, specifically looking at fractions. I would like to remind students that they should be on Dreambox and taking home reading to do nightly or reading on Epic. Continue to practice safety routines at school especially wearing our masks and physical distancing. Keep up the great work room 25!

Mr. Frank Grade 5 Room 25

Time is flying by in room 32! In math we have been working on patterns and fractions. The students are becoming confident in their ability to compare mixed and improper fractions. I am so proud of them. In English language arts, we are starting our personal and persuasive unit. We will be focusing on how to properly structure an essay. In social studies, we will are finishing up our First Peoples unit. The students are excited to continue learning about the people and stories of Canada. As for science, we are starting our biodiversity unit. The students are excited to continue their studies in each of these subjects. Keep up the great work room 32!

Ms. Balkaran Grade 4 & 5 Room 27

Can you believe it is already December? November was a busy month, starting with learning about and observing Remembrance Day. We continued our Science exploration of the Human Body Sys-tems and are continuing our learning with individual inquiries. During our community walks we no-ticed the amount of small businesses in our area! We decided to build representations of these businesses in Minecraft for our community mapping project. There are some Minecraft experts in Rm. 27! We continued building our multiplication and division skills by solving Thinking Classroom Problems. We’re getting into the routine of sharing our thinking and making sure we can prove our answers. As we head into the holiday season, we reflect on things we are thankful for. I am so thankful that I get to spend my time learning alongside Room 27. Happy December everyone!

Lord Selkirk School December 2020 Page 7

As we are unable to safely host a Winter Concert this school year, we are excited to announce the new ways we will showcase our learning in The Arts! Students in Grades 4-6 (and Room 35) will be performing Reader’s Theatre performances which will be put on Seesaw for families to view. Students have selected their method of performance between Stop Motion, video play performance, and puppet shows. Performances will be shared with families via Seesaw. In keeping with safety and security, our students will be filmed individually or in small groups. We know things look different this year but we are proud of the creativity and learning happening in The Arts and look forward to sharing our performance with you on December 18th! After Winter Break our focus will be shifting to Music.

We have been having so much fun in the Arts. With our focus for the term being Drama, learning about puppets was a natural fit. Our Grades 1 to 3 students learned about how different kinds of puppets are built and brought to life by puppeteers. We learned about the puppets of Sesame Street and those of the stage adaptation of the Lion King. We took this to the next level and designed and created our very own sock puppets. Students used Seesaw as well as paper and markers/crayons to design their puppets and then we made them together in class. These puppets will be used to create mini puppet shows. We had an absolute blast making these together. This project came together with the help of many teachers supporting our needs for supplies which currently cannot be purchased in person due to pandemic restrictions, we want to say a big huge THANK YOU to our community for supporting our learning and fun in the Arts.

What is a Tri-conference? A tri-conference is a conversation involves three parties: teacher, parent, and student. In the conference, the participants share the goals of learning. Then, they discuss strengths, areas to strengthen, and next steps. The process involves students in reflecting on their own growth in the presence of both teacher and parent /guardian. Appointments with other teachers (resource, physical education, music) can also be arranged. When/How are Report Cards Being Issued? Report cards will be sent digitally on December 1st. Lord Selkirk School is part of a divisional pilot program to distribute reports using School Messenger. Report cards have been digitally signed by the principal but not by the teacher. Teachers will be signing the copy of the report card that is placed in the student’s pupil file. As part of the report card process Ms. Johnston and Mr. Teixeira read each report card (staff send to specific admin.) and provide feedback. Should you require a paper copy of your child’s report card, there was an place to indicate that when you signed up for your tri-conference.. If you forgot to do so and would like a paper copy, please contact Ms. Hourd in the office (204-667-8495). Those parents who requested paper copies, will also have report cards sent home in an envelope on December 1st.

How to support your children during the COVID-19 Pandemic Information provided by Jennifer Shroff Pendley, PhD for KidsHealth.org

1. Manage your own anxiety It’s completely understandable to be anxious right now (how could we not be?) but how we manage that anxi-ety has a big impact on our kids. Keeping your worries in check will help your whole family navigate this un-certain situation as easily as possible. “Watch out for catastrophic thinking,” says Mark Reinecke, PhD, a clin-ical psychologist with the Child Mind Institute. For example, assuming every cough is a sign you’ve been in-fected, or reading news stories that dwell on worst-case scenarios. “Keep a sense of perspective, engage in solution-focused thinking and balance this with mindful acceptance.” For those moments when you do catch yourself feeling anxious, try to avoid talking about your concerns within earshot of children. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, step away and take a break. That could look like taking a shower or going outside or into an-other room and taking a few deep breaths. 2. Offer Comfort — and Honesty Focus on helping your child feel safe, but be truthful. Don't offer more detail than your child is interested in. For example, if kids ask about stores closing, address their questions. But if the topic doesn't come up, there's no need to raise it. If your child asks about something and you don't know the answer, say so. Use the question as a chance to find out together. Check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for up-to-date, reliable information about coronavirus (COVID-19). That way, you have the facts and kids don't see headlines about deaths and other scary information. Speak calmly and reassuringly. Explain that most people who get sick feel like they have a cold or the flu. Kids pick up on it when parents worry. So when you talk about coronavirus and the news, use a calm voice and try not to seem upset. Give kids space to share their fears. It's natural for kids to worry, "Could I be next? Could that happen to me?" Let your child know that kids don't seem to get as sick as adults. Let them know they can always come to you for answers or to talk about what scares them. Know when they need guidance. Be aware of how your kids get news and information, especially older kids who go online. Point them to age-appropriate content so they don't end up finding news shows or outlets that scare them or have incorrect information. 3. Help Kids Feel in Control Give your child specific things to do to feel in control. Teach kids that getting lots of sleep and washing their hands well and often can help them stay strong and well. Explain that regular hand washing also helps stop viruses from spreading to others. Be a good role model and let your kids see you washing your hands often! Talk about all the things that are happening to keep people safe and healthy. Young kids might be reas-sured to know that hospitals and doctors are prepared to treat people who get sick. Older kids might be com-forted to know that scientists are working to develop a vaccine. Kids over 2 years old can wear a mask to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. These talks also help kids manage changes to their normal routine. Put news stories in context. If they ask, explain that serious illness and death in kids from the virus is still rare, despite what they might hear. Watch the news with your kids so you can filter what they hear. Kids and teens often worry more about family and friends than themselves. For example, if kids hear that older people are more likely to be seriously ill, they might worry about their grandparents. Letting them call or video chat with older relatives can help them feel reassured about loved ones. Let your kids know that it's normal to feel stressed out at times. Everyone does. Recognizing these feelings and knowing that stressful times pass and life gets back to normal can help children build resilience. 4. Keep the Conversation Going Keep checking in with your child. Use talking about coronavirus as a way to help kids learn about their bodies, like how the immune system fights disease. Talk about current events with your kids often. It's important to help them think through stories they hear about. Ask questions: What do you think about these events? How do you think these things happen? Such questions also encourage conversation about non-news topics. If you or your children are struggling to manage anxiety during this time, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for support at [email protected] or by calling the school at (204) 667-8495. Take care and stay safe! Cristina Almeida Guidance Counsellor

At Winnipeg School Division, one of our greatest priori#es is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each

and every day.

Safe Arrival allows parents to report their child’s absence quickly and conveniently in one of three ways:

1. Parents can call into an automated interac3ve telephone system via a toll free number (1-855-278-4513)

through which absences can be reported.

2. Parents can log into a website, h<ps://go.schoolmessenger.ca to authen3cate their Portal account to report

absences and update contact informa3on.

3. Parents who have authen3cated their accounts and have either an iOS or Android device can download an

app that can be used to report absences.

The system will be available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future Absences Can Be Reported At Any Time.

By repor#ng your child absent in advance using SafeArrival, you will NOT receive a call.

Please do not contact the school or classroom teacher

We appreciate your support with our entry/exit procedures. To support us in reducing the congestion as classes are dismissed from the playground doors, we ask that

caregivers, please remain on the grass at the edge of the hardtop while waiting for your child(ren). We also ask that caregivers picking up children, please wear a mask

when entering the school yard or in the front area around the school, which can become congested. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

As we are unable to safely host a Winter Concert this school year we are excited to have found other ways to showcase our learning in The Arts! Students in Grades 1-3 will be performing sock puppet performances of Robert Munch stories and they will be shared to families on Seesaw. Students in Grades 4-6 (and Room 35) will be creating their own Infomercials. Students are inventing a product, writing a script, casting the script and recording their Infomercials. These will also be shared on Seesaw with families. There are a few things that make this project extra special. In using an online platform, families will be able to share these performances far and wide. With safety in mind, performances will be completed individually or in small groups to ensure we address privacy concerns. We know things look different this year but we are proud of the creativity and learning happening in The Arts and look forward to sharing our performance with you on December 18th.
