Reading aloud to kids has clear cognitive benefi ts. For example, brain scans show that hearing stories strengthens the part of the brain associated

with visual imagery, story comprehension, and word meaning. One study found that

kindergarten children who were read to at least three times a week had a “signifi cantly greater phonemic awareness than did children who were read to less often.” The landmark Becoming a Nation of Readers report from 1985 concluded that “the single most important activity for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”

PARENTSThis month, countless little girls and boys will open their presents and fall in love with the new toy they had been wishing for. It’s always so much fun to see

the joy on their faces when this happens— but as an educator, I wish more of the presents that children opened were books.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see a child open a present to fi nd a book that was selected just for them—and have that same look of joy and excitement on their face?

I will likely never forget the look I got when I gave my little brother (from Big Brothers Big Sisters) a book as a present when he was 10 years old. His face showed more confusion than happiness that morning— but over the years, he came to love reading and even started asking for gift cards to the local book store as his Christmas presents.

In his case, a life-long love of reading was sparked by the gift of that fi rst book. Imagine what could happen if more people took the time to give it a book as a gift.

Every winter, local educator Mrs. Vens and her friends get together and wrap books she picked from the shelves at WQPT and gives them to her students as gifts right before winter break. Think of how great it would be if more educators did this fortheir students and other children.

One can only imagine how many children Mrs. Vens has inspired to become lifelong readers with her simple act of wrapping the books WQPT provided for her students. Just think how many children YOU could inspire with such a simple act.

This month, I invite you to give the gift of literacy for those special children in your life. Select and give a book that you thinka child will like this holiday season. You might just change the projectory of their life!
