Hello Bullpups!

We are just about half way through the school year. As we begin our Winter

administration of MAP, I want to encourage all students to do their best and work

hard! Please be sure your children are well rested and in school by 9:00 am daily

to begin testing on time. As we prepare for Winter Break, please take your

children to the library daily to continue supporting reading and learning.

As you know, being able to read fluently and comprehend what you are reading

will prove to be successful. Each student should be setting a goal to go higher

than their first MAP RIT scores. Lastly, if I do not get a chance to personally

inform you, I would like to wish each of you Happy Holidays.

Parents, if your child is absent, please send in a note with the student’s First AND Last Name on each

piece of paper. This will help me greatly and prevent having unexcused absences. Also, if your child is

NOT going to be in school, please call the school office and leave a message on the machine to make us

aware. Per Toledo Board of Education you MUST have your ID out and ready when picking your

student up. This is a MUST for all parents/Guardians NO exceptions.

MAP ASSESSMENT

December 4-15 – Grades K & 1 – Reading

Grades 2-8 – Reading & Math

This assessment will give us baseline data to determine what interventions

and/or additional support students will need. This assessment does replace

the STAR test and will still be given three times per year.

Please help us to help your child on test days by:

Getting to school on time

Getting a good night’s sleep

Having a balanced breakfast

Reassure and encourage your child that he/she will do well on tests

December 2017 2 Hour Delays; both Scheduled and for Weather If the school is on a 2 Hour Delay, medicines that are taken at school after breakfast in the

morning must be given at home. These medicines are ordered by the Dr. at 9 AM, not at 11 AM

when school will start on those days. Thank you in advance for planning ahead.

Christmas Giving for Students For this holiday season, consider some gifts that encourage learning, creativity, or fitness

and good health. Gifts that promote safety are so important-like bike helmets-for anything that is

on wheels, including; skateboards, scooters, skates, etc. . Any sports safety equipment will make

a great gift too.

To promote learning, gifts like books, educational games, and apps are wonderful. Toys that

promote building things are a great way to expand a child’s engineering skills. Does your child

love art? Art supplies can provide endless fun. Love music and/or dance? Gifts of music,

instruments, and music lessons can spark a lifelong passion. Workout gear, exercise or dance

clothes promote fun, healthy habits, and brain stimulation. So do videos, games, apps and lessons

in their chosen hobby/interest. Does your child like to cook, enjoy science, nature, wildlife?

Think about gifts that promote learning, or involvement in areas that spark their interest. Does

your child struggle with a subject in school? Ask his/her teacher what might be a gift that

promotes learning in a fun way. Remember $$ is not as important to a child, it is quality time

spent together that is children really want. Parents are a child’s first and best teacher.

Cold and Flu Season Colds and flu’s are spread from person, so it is important to help stop the spread of viruses and

bacteria. Make sure your child knows how to do this by:

Wash hands properly before meals or handling food, after play and after blowing nose or

touching anything possibly dirty.

Teach your child HOW to blow nose, one nostril at a time and properly dispose of

tissues & wash hands.

Teach your child to COVER THEIR COUGH, have them cough into their elbow, not

hand.

Do not share food, drink or personal items with anyone else. People can appear healthy

but actually carrying a cold or virus, etc.

All family members over the age of 6 months should get a Flu Shot. It is still not too late.

Keep sick children at home, and if they have a fever of 100 degrees or higher they must

not come to school.

DISCIPLINE & ATTENDANCE

• Our school day starts at 9:00 am. If students will be eating breakfast they need to be here no later than 8:50am to avoid being late to class

• Please make sure students return to school after an absence with a note of excuse. Our truancy mediation

program begins this month . Students who have 3+ days of unexcused absence may be referred for a meeting with Lucas County Juvenile Court to address attendance.

• Discipline is an area in school that we all must address in one way or another. If students violate the

TPS disciplinary code of conduct teachers and/or administration will issue consequences based on the violation and communicate with parents and guardians. Parents and guardians please make sure we have correct contact information for you. Although discipline generally has a negative connotation, we at Glenwood work hard to make sure that self-discipline is our students’ responsibility. We make it a point to promote and reward positive behavior

IMPORTANT REMINDERS DRESS CODE……….

With the weather turning colder, many students want to wear some type of sweater or jacket in school. While that is permissible, please remind your student that hoodies and jackets with hoods are NOT to be worn in the school during the school day. Any student wearing a garment with a hood will be asked to remove that piece of clothing or call home for appropriate clothing. If you would like to review the Dress Code Policy for elementary students, visit the district website at www.tps.org. That policy clearly states that there are to be NO hoods on ‘cardigans, pullovers, jackets, sweaters and vests.’

ELECTRONIC DEVICE……….

The TPS Electronic Device policy, strictly bans cell phones and other devices from being used in school. Many of your students carry cell phones for use before and after school; however, they must turn them in to the administration every morning to be locked in the office. These cell phones will then be returned to students at dismissal. From this point forward any cell phones or other devices that are confiscated will be sent to the Board of Education Security Division.

Being in school every day on time and remain in school for the entire day. This means your child will not miss out on learning. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours. If your child is absent due to an illness, please call the school at 419-671-4600 and provide a written note upon their return. Student’s needing to be dismissed early will not be dismissed until someone is here to pick them up and the person must show their photo ID and be listed on the emergency contact forms. There is no early dismissal after 3 pm and we cannot take message for student’s dismissal procedures as we cannot verify the caller.
