A Message from the

Chamber CEO... Conquering Stress….. It Can Be Done! Stress is inevitable in any industry. The more you add to your plate, the harder it is to feel like you are accomplishing projects to the best of your ability. From time to time we find ourselves overworked, overstressed and ready to give up. But what makes us hold on and keep trying? PERSEVERANCE and the

overwhelming joy that comes when you WIN! Today I want to share with you some practical tips I used to hear about all the time and it wasn't until I actually started doing them that I realized what a difference they make in helping you be more PRODUCTIVE! 1. DELEGATE This is the most difficult thing to do when you are a work hog. Trust me, even though someone else may not do the job with the same care and enthusiasm as you do, there are small tasks you do on a day to day basis that consume time and energy from you so STOP DOING THEM YOURSELF and let someone else do it! If you have a small office, find help from the outside. Interns are great at providing help with small tasks like phone calls, emails, calendar updates, social media posts, etc. 2. Get Out and Smell the Roses I am guilty of getting so caught up in daily meetings and projects that I don't event get out for lunch or fresh air. This is something I continue to struggle with, but I have made a commitment to get better at it. You need to get out and clear your mind more often to allow ideas to flow and to find solutions with a clear head. Take a walk, go for a drive or find a quiet place to stop and think. I never understood why someone would want to go out to lunch and sit by themselves until I did it one day. It was the best hour of my day and the most productive! 3. The Famous "To Do" List This is not new, but I will always swear by it because it helps me stay on track. With juggling so many projects at once, if I didn't use a list of things I need to do with notes on projects and reminders, I would forget things all the time. I hate to say it but every year that goes by, I find my memory becoming more and more fuzzy so my TO DO list is my bible! These are just a few tips that work for me everyday. Here is a great article that also gives tips on how to stop wasting time and be more productive: http://ti.me/1wlvHVl Work Smarter and not Harder! -Sofia Valenzuela, CEO, Tracy Chamber Did you enjoy this article? What’s Happening

in your City... Annual Leaf Collection Efforts Begin in Tracy Tracy’s annual leaf pick-up season will begin on Monday, November 24th and will continue through the first week of January, 2015. For areas of Tracy with large mature trees and heavier quantities of leaves, residents are asked to rake their excess leaves

curbside for weekly collection. Leaves must be piled curbside by 4 a.m. on your normal garbage collection day.

The City of Tracy is encouraging residents to keep their gutters clear of leaves to prevent flooding and polluting of local waterways. Debris such as garden materials, tree trimmings, brush, grass clippings, cans, paper, bottles, construction materials, or animal waste should also be removed from leaf piles. Garbage and debris in leaf piles will not be collected, as this prevents the material from turning into compost.

Residents with small trees, which produce a smaller quantity of leaves, are asked to place leaves in the brown yard waste toter. The toter will continue to be collected every other week on your normal yard waste collection day. Please contact the City of Tracy, Public Works Department at (209) 831-6300 or Tracy Delta Disposal at (209) 835-0601 for information.

Some of the new laws for 2015, such as mandatory paid sick leave, make significant changes to the states’ legal landscape. Other new

laws make changes to different parts of existing law or may affect only employers in specified industries, such as farming. Unless specified, the following list of new legislation goes into effect on January 1, 2015. More details are available in a free CalChamber white paper, available at www.calchamber.com/newlaws2015. Leaves of Absence • Mandatory Paid Sick Leave. AB 1522, the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, requires employers to provide paid sick leave to any employee who worked in California for 30 days. The effective date for employers to begin providing the paid sick leave benefit is July 1, 2015. The law contains many different nuances, such as detailed recordkeeping and notice requirements, including a new poster requirement. The law also contains penalties for noncompliance.

• Time Off for Emergency Duty: Expanded Category. AB 2536 adds new personnel to the list of employees eligible for protected time off for emergency duty.

• Employee Protections Protections for Unpaid Interns and Volunteers. AB 1443 adds unpaid interns and volunteers to the list of individuals protected from harassment under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).

• Nondiscrimination: Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Persons. AB 1660 makes it a violation of FEHA for an employer to discriminate against an individual because he/she holds or presents a driver’s license issued to undocumented persons who can submit satisfactory proof of identity and California residency. These driver’s licenses are scheduled to start being issued on January 1, 2015.

• Immigration-Related Protections. AB 2751 expands the definition of an unfair immigration-related practice to include threatening to file or filing a false report or complaint with any state or federal agency. Current law extended the protection only to reports filed with the police.

Several new laws will increase employers’ wage-and-hour obligations in 2015. Many of the new laws in the wage-and-hour arena deal with increasing penalties and expanding liability, instead of imposing significant new obligations on employers.

• Prevailing Wages. Bills signed include AB 1939, allowing a contractor to bring an action against “hiring parties” to recover any increased costs incurred because the work was performed on a covered public work subject to prevailing wage laws.

• Rest and Recovery Periods. SB 1360 confirms that recovery periods that are taken pursuant to heat illness regulations are paid breaks and count as hours worked. SB 1360 reiterates what is already in existing law in this area and was passed simply to clear up any confusion employers may have had.

• Waiting Time Penalties. AB 1723 expands available enforcement mechanisms for assessing waiting time penalties when an employer willfully fails to timely pay wages to a resigned or discharged employee. AB 2743 provides a waiting time penalty if unionized theatrical and concert venue employers violate any agreed upon timeframe for paying final wages contained in a collective bargaining agreement. • Protections for Complaints Under the Labor Code. AB 2751 clarifies that the $10,000 penalty against an employer who discriminates or retaliates against an employee who complains of Labor Code violations will be awarded to the employee or employees who “suffered the violation.”

• Timeframe for Recovery of Wages: Liquidated Damages. AB 2074 states that a lawsuit seeking to recover liquidated damages for minimum wage violations can be filed any time before the expiration of the statute of limitations that applies to the underlying wage claim, which is three years.

• Email for Workplace Safety Reports. AB 326 allows employers to email their reports of a work-related serious injury, illness or death to the Division of Occupational Safety and Health. To learn more about the 2015 New Employment Laws, visit the CalChamber website, www.calchamber.com
