School Health Information

I would like to personally thank those that have donated monetary gifts to be used towards the backpack program. Your donations have helped provide extra nourishment weekly to several students in our school district. Those students that are enrolled are thrilled each week to get their pack of nutritional, accessible and easy to prepare foods for the weekend. We currently have 25 students in our district enrolled in the program. I would also like to thank the many community and church groups that have donated clothing , hats, gloves etc…. for children in our school district. It is very much appreciated!

I want to continue to remind everyone to use good hand washing, especially now that the weather is getting colder and we are having to be confined into closer quarters, in large groups. Diseases can spread very quickly with minimal exposure. GOOD HANDWASHING IS THE BEST PREVENTION FROM THE SPREAD OF INFECTION, DISEASES ETC…. If your child is ill, please notify the school of their absence. Attendance is checked daily.

Please consider others when allowing your child to return to school after an illness. Students should be fever free without any medication, be eating well and should be almost to their full potential before returning them to school. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in this matter. If you have any health questions or issues, please don’t hesitate to call me.

-Barb Sitzmann, School Nurse

“The Kingsley-Pierson CSD believes education enhancement requires consistently fair and equitable educational and employment practices without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, sexual orientation, marital status, sex, gender, gender identity, disability or socio-economic status.”

As I am writing this, it is early in the morning and snowing and it reminded me to remind you about our notifications when we do have a late start, early out, or no school at all. We have several avenues in which to let people know:

1. We will put the announcements on the local television and radio stations. 2. KTIV has a text notification system you can sign up for. 3. If you haven’t noticed, we have used PARENT LINK the last few years. This has been a reliable notification system, which allows us to send automated messages for both lunch balances and weather related information. We will be able to send out our notifications faster and by more than just text or email. End of Semester

The end of the semester is coming fast. December 3rd is the end of the 6 week grading period and with only 3 weeks left until the end of the semester, this might be a good time to have your child review their grades and talk to the teacher on what may need to be done to pass a class. Semester tests start on December 19 and continue on December 22 and 23. There is a 2:30 dismissal on December 23rd for the Winter Break.

ActivitiesThe district has numerous activities scheduled between now and the

Winter Break. Please come out to the concerts, games, and matches to support the kids for their hard work and dedication.

A Note from the Superintendent

Elementary Comments- Mr. Wiese

Greetings from the Kingsley-Pierson Elementary! The season has been changing and the temperatures will be a roller coaster. Please make sure your child has proper apparel for being outside. Elementary students can be outside three times per day plus before and after school. The precedent is to go outside if the temperature/wind chill is above 0 degrees and not raining or extreme snow fall. The following items are needed daily as weather conditions can/will change rapidly during the school day.

#1 Winter coat with buttons, snaps, or a zipper that works.#2 Hood that ties or fastens or a warm cap or hat (if your child’s coat has a hood that does not fasten, please provide a warm hat or cap in addition to the hood.)#3 Warm gloves or mittens (an extra pair in case the first pair gets wet is a great idea.)#4 Boots are required whenever there is snow, slush, or mud on the playground (boots should be waterproof and insulated for cold temperatures.)#5 Snow pants are required whenever there is snow on the playground.

If your child does not have appropriate clothing, the area they play in will be restricted to the pavement or the area right next to the building. Let’s work together to make sure every student is appropriately dressed for the winter weather. If we do have a 10:30 AM Late Start, we do not serve breakfast.

A “Food Drive” will take place in the elementary and middle school from December 1-12. Flyers were sent home on Wednesday, November 26. Students, faculty, staff, administration, and anyone else are encouraged to bring in a can of food if possible (they can bring one or more any time starting 12/3/12). Monetary donations are also accepted and 100% goes to great causes. Multiple venues will be given the items (all non-profit organizations). To celebrate this adventure, students will watch a movie with Mr. Wiese on Tuesday, December 23. Thank you for all of your help!

The annual Elementary Music Program will be held @7:00 PM in Kingsley on Monday, December 22. The 1st semester will end on Tuesday, December 23 at 2:30 PM (Kingsley town shuttle earlier). I want to wish all of you a “Merry Christmas & Happy 2015”!

Thank you for all of your support this semester! The 2nd semester begins on Monday, January 5, 2015.

The High School Holiday concert will be Monday, December 8. Students will have pencil drawings and pieces done in ink, markers, and acrylic paintings. The Middle School Holiday Concert will be Thursday, December 18. Students will display projects that include pencil drawings, mixed media, tempera paint, and watercolor. Finally, the Elementary Holiday Concert will be December 22. They have been experimenting with weaving, tempera paint, markers, pastels, and watercolors. Students are asked to take their projects home with them after the concert.

Curriculum CornerAmy Benson

Didn’t I just finish writing last month’s article??? Again, another month has flown by, and we are getting closer to finishing the first semester of school! December is a busy month full of family and fun. I hope you are able to enjoy the hustle and bustle with those you hold most dear! This month I have been busy working

on the 2013-2014 Annual Progress Report. Inside this report are all the data in Reading, Math and Science for the past five years. I am very proud of this over 100 page document! Inside you will find lots of interesting reading and a few pics of our students busy at work. There are copies of each document in the Kingsley and Pierson libraries. Stop by and peruse if you have a spare minute and please let me know what you think. I am always looking for feedback in this new position. Miss Hoffman and I are currently

working on writing a syllabus for a 2nd semester credit renewal class to be offered to the faculty. This class will be focused on technology especially looking at Google Docs and Spreadsheets. I will be facilitating the class and Miss Hoffman will be teaching as she is the expert in this field of study! I am hoping the teachers are enjoying these opportunities that have been made available this year. Currently I am offering 3 renewal credits at Kingsley-Pierson. In case you did not know, teachers need a minimum of 6 credits every 5 years. The classes I am offering this semester are: Using Pinterest in the Classroom, Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW), and those in a book study centered around 8 to Great by M.K. Mueller. Next semester I will be teaching the Pinterest class in Bronson on Thurs. afternoons. I really love what I do and am blessed

to be on this journey with wonderful administration, faculty, staff, parents, and community members. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Third Grade NewsIt is hard to believe that we are already approaching the

mid-way point of another school year. November has gone by especially fast as we spent six days completing the Iowa Assessments. Those are days of stress and concentration for both teachers and students. We hope our scores will show how hard we worked. Thank You to all of the parents who sent treats to make the test days more bearable!Once again the Kingsley Garden Club prepared Christmas

ornaments with Miss Hodnefield’s class. Beautiful angels were made by the students with the help of these ladies. These angels will adorn a tree at the Le Mars Festival of Trees. Each student also received a copy of the story that Darla Rock wrote about the angels. In the spring the Garden Club will return to do a project with Mrs. Bailey’s third grade. We thank the Garden Club for including us in their programs for the year. The LeMars Kiwanis Club presents the third grade students

in Plymouth County with student dictionaries each year. These dictionaries are great reference books with much interesting information in addition to the lists of words. The students received these dictionaries in September, and they have used them often. We sincerely thank the Kiwanis Club for a much used and appreciated gift!As we go into the winter months, many of our reading and

social studies units will focus on history. We will study Native American culture, then go on to Plymouth Plantation and the Pilgrims, and finally study the westward movement of the pioneers. Our science focus during this time will be rocks and minerals. With the holidays during the next month, this will be a fun and busy time of the year. We hope that all of you enjoy this season of thanks and

giving!

Composition Students Learn Zentangle

Zentangle is an abstract, patterned art form created according to the principles of the Zentangle Method. The method uses various types of lines, shapes and designs to create a new shape or pattern. Typically, Zentangles are made with black ink on white paper, but some artists prefer to implement color into their designs. When first seen Zentangles may appear to be doodles on a paper, but a closer look will reveal the method to the patterns and shapes.

Seizing the opportunity to create an interdisciplinary lesson, art teacher Mrs. Hackett collaborated with Composition teacher Mrs. Vondrak about the possibility of the Composition students using Zentangle to connect with a writing. Since the Composition classes had begun their 2nd Quarter Writing Portfolios with the viewing of the film Into the Wild, Mrs. Vondrak invited the students to write a poem based on the film using a technique studied in the 1st Quarter.

While Mrs. Hackett taught the 5th period Composition students, Mrs. Vondrak taught the 4th period class about art lines and how they create shape, form and structure, similar to how lines of writing create shape, form and structure. The students created a grid pattern sheet with thirty-six different types of lines. The students started with straight, zigzag, wavy, looped, crossed and dotted lines, then completed the rest of the grid on their own. These design sheets were then used to create their Zentangle letters.

The next step in the process was to trace a stenciled letter onto white paper. The students used the first letter of the first word of their poems. The blank letters then became filled with the lines and designs; students referred to their grids and borrowed ideas from one another. Over a two-day period, most students completed their Zentangles and were ready to back them with black to silhouette and accent the black lines on their designs. The final stage of the project required the students to attach their letters and write their poems on a large poster paper.

Each letter is uniquely individual and creates a stunning display outside Mrs. Vondrak’s classroom. The students enjoyed the opportunity to implement art with their writing, and even those who are not as confident in their artistic skills took great pride in completing their Zentangles.

Find Your Future in Business! A business exploration day for high school students. By Erin Hoffman On Friday, November 7th, five KingsleyPierson students had the chance to spend the day as a college business student at Buena Vista University. Andy Pratt, Michael Nafe, Bryce Weinriech, Nolan Quade, and Noah Becker, as a part of Miss Hoffman’s Accounting and Personal Finance classes, had an allaccess pass to student life with the help of an explorationrecruitment day offered by BVU. The students started their day with a conversation about the importance of attending college with the Dean of the Harold Walter Siebens School of Business, Ashok Subramanian. They continued their morning with a tour of the campus by a student ambassador. The KingsleyPierson students found it very interesting that the majority of the campus is underground. The KP students were even given the opportunity to discuss all aspects of student life with a small BVU student panel that their teacher was not invited to attend. They then had the opportunity to experience a college level class by attending “Accounting Foundations” with fortyfive other BVU business majors. The day ended with a trip to the dining hall where the soft serve ice cream machine was a big hit! All were very thankful for the tshirts they received to commemorate this special day.

In a thank you letter to the BVU School of Business the KP students wrote, “This tour greatly helped us broaden our view of what college life is like and what to expect in the future. Our visit has given us a more focused approach to our college planning.”

A Career in Word Processing: Stenography by: Erin Hoffman On Friday, November 14th, Miss Hoffman’s Word Processing Class had the privilege of having Misty Bubke and Judge Ackerman as guest speakers. Misty Bubke, a former KP student, is a stenographer that works as a Court Reporter for the Honorable John Ackerman.

They grabbed our attention immediately as Misty began typing every word that Judge Ackerman said as it was projected on the whiteboard for the students to see. Misty was a great guest speaker to have come in and talk to our students about a career that revolves around word processing. She told the class that stenography is career field that is currently in need of young professionals and that Des Moines Area Community College, DMACC, has a stenography program. Court Reporting, Closed Captioning, and Communication Access RealTime

Translation are some of the other careers within stenography that Misty introduced us to. Misty told us that being able to type fast is not the only skill that you need to be a successful stenographer; excellent hearing, good English and vocabulary skills are also a must in this career field. Judge Ackerman also taught us more about our legal system and how he became a judge.

The students really enjoyed seeing and being able to try Misty’s stenomachine. She taught us that she uses stenonotes to type out her sentences and that she can type 220 words per minute on her machine. She offered to let all of the students try out her machine, which by the way only has 24 keys! Misty and Judge Ackerman visiting our classroom helps with the implementation of the Iowa Core into our curriculum because having them as guest speakers helps our students with employability skills and their ability to demonstrate initiative and selfdirection through high achievement and lifelong learning while exploring the ways individual talents and skills can be used for productive outcome in their personal and professional life.

This was an excellent opportunity for our students to experience some interesting career options relevant to our class.
