Luke Chapter 2, Verses 1-20
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'i-us was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered.
And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Christmas Love (Anonymous) Each December, I vowed to make Christmas a calm and peaceful experience. I had cut back on nonessential obligations -- extensive card writing, endless baking, decorating, and even overspending. Yet still, I found myself exhausted, unable to appreciate the precious family moments, and of course, the true meaning of Christmas.
My son, Nicholas, was in kindergarten that year. It was an exciting season for a six-year-old. For weeks, he'd been memorizing songs for his school's "Winter Pageant."
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd be working the night of the production. Unwilling to miss his shining moment, I spoke with his teacher. She assured me there'd be a dress rehearsal the morning of the presentation. All parents unable to attend that evening were welcome to come then. Fortunately, Nicholas seemed happy with the compromise.
So, the morning of the dress rehearsal, I filed in ten minutes early, found a spot on the cafeteria floor and sat down. Around the room, I saw several other parents quietly scampering to their seats. As I waited, the students were led into the room. Each class, accompanied by their teacher, sat cross-legged on the floor. Then, each group, one by one, rose to perform their song.
Because the public school system had long stopped referring to the holiday as Christmas," I didn't expect anything other than fun, commercial entertainment - songs of reindeer, Santa Claus, snowflakes and good cheer. So, when my son's class rose to sing, "Christmas Love," I was slightly taken aback by its bold title.
Nicholas was aglow, as were all of his classmates, adorned in fuzzy mittens, red sweaters, and bright snowcaps upon their heads. Those in the front row-
center stage -- held up large letters, one by one, to spell out the title of the Credit:http://www.goarch.org/special/advent/list song. As the class would sing "C is for Christmas," a child would hold up the en_learn_share/nativity/index_html letter C. Then, "H is for Happy," and on and on, until each child holding up his portion had presented the complete message, "Christmas
Love." The performance was going smoothly, until suddenly, we noticed her; a small, quiet, girl in the front row holding the letter "M" upside down -- totally unaware her letter "M" appeared as a "W."
The audience of 1st through 6th graders snickered at this little one's mistake. But she had no idea they were laughing at her, so she stood tall, proudly holding her "W." Although many teachers tried to shush the children, the laughter continued until the last letter was raised, and we all saw it together. A hush came over the audience and eyes began to widen. In that instant, we understood the reason we were there, why we celebrated the holiday in the first place, why even in the chaos, there was a purpose for our festivities.
For when the last letter was held high, the message read loud and clear:
"C H R I S T W A S L O V E"
And, I believe, He still is. Amazed by His presence...
Humbled by His love.
Have a Blessed Nativity! Me Agape, Fr. Kastanas

Little Halos
During the month of November the children at Little Halos were very busy. On Saturday, November 8th, we celebrated the feast of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel the patrons of Little Halos, and thus we discussed how they are the Guardian Angels of our school. Furthermore, children made little angels and made a Prosforo (Altar Bread) to be offered at the Divine Liturgy. For the rest of the month children spent a lot of time studying all aboutolive trees, since olive oil is so connected to Greek culture and our Greek Orthodox faith. Therefore, we started by identifying the parts of the tree and its fruit, the olive! Children tasted different types of olive, green and black, and rated their favorites. Children also had fun learning about the fact that in Ancient Greece people rewarded athletes with a wreath made out of olive branches, also known as “Kotinos”. Students held a day of Olympic Games and learned about the Pentathlon. Everyone was a winner and so they were all crowned with an olive wreath. Finally, they looked through paintings of olive trees by famous artists, such as Van Gogh and Theofilos, created their own by using finger paints, wood chips, and wood peels.

Hello GOYAns! We would like to thank everyone who attended this year's Annual GOYA Family Glendi.
We had a great turn out. Also, a huge thank you to the families who donated for the event. We all had
a wonderful evening! GOYA held our yearly Thanksgiving Pie Sale on Sunday, November 23rd. We
greatly appreciate all of the time spent on baking the pies and breads that were sold. Thank you all
for participating. We have donated ten turkeys for this years' Turkey Drive. A big thank you to all of
the GOYAns that helped load the turkeys! The upcoming events for December include Christmas tree
decorating and wreath making as well as the annual GOYA Christmas party. On Saturday, December

tree in the church hall and then planted on the church grounds after Christmas. The annual GOYA
Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, December 20th at 6pm at the Carayannopoulos house.
Thank you very much to the Carayannopoulos family for volunteering their home! During the party,
we will be decorating cookies for Rosie's Place, a Boston sanctuary for homeless women, which has
become a tradition over the past few years. All GOYAns are welcome. Signup sheets will be e-mailed
in early December for this event. We hope to see all GOYAns at these future events!

News and Announcements Sunday Catechetical School
November was the month of restarting our music and hymns program with the help of Alexis Mitchell and the
participation of all of our classes and teachers. The children are learning some of the Liturgy hymns with the goal of
singing them in Church before too long! All our students are very excited about this new activity and their voices
sound truly angelic! A big thank you to all that support and encourage this new activity.
For a second year in a row, on Sunday November 16th, we hosted a visit for the 7th grade youth group of the United
Universalist Church of Arlington. Our guests were given a Church tour, learned about the Orthodox Divine Liturgy and
received basic information about the Orthodox Church. In a follow up email our guests commented “We felt extremely
welcomed and felt privileged to have had a great tour of a space. It was very powerful to see 2000-year- old traditions
being handed down to elementary schools kids through such great stewards of the faith’. We are especially thankful to
Fr. Nick, Cassandra Chamallas, Curtis Mitchell and James Pagounes for assisting and introducing our visitors to the
Divine Liturgy.
As Christmas time approaches, our Catechetical School students, teachers and families participate in many service
projects and philanthropic efforts. This is a blessed opportunity for all of us to thank God for the gift of His Son to us
on that first Christmas day, and to show our love and appreciation towards our neighbors and those in need.
On Saturday, December 13th children and teachers of the Catechetical school will join other organizations of our
community for a visit to the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, MA. The children will make and bring along Christmas
cards to distribute to the residents. This has always been a well-attended, memorable and heartwarming annual
event, so please, come and join us.
On Saturday December 20th, the Catechetical School and Greek School teachers and parents will host the annual
Communion breakfast. Dads will prepare tasty pancakes, and it is rumored that a special guest will pay his annual
visit to the children of St. Athanasius! Please, bring along a toy/gift in support of our ‘Big Wishes Gift Drive’ for ‘The
Home of Little Wanderers’, an effort coordinated by our first grade class and their teachers Eleni and Marianna
Terzakis.
Preparations for the annual ‘Children’s Christmas Pageant’ are in full swing! Practices are held in Church from
12:15pm -1:00pm each Sunday. This beloved annual celebration is scheduled for Sunday, December 21st,
immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Come and enjoy our young children as they make this beautiful Christmas
offering!
The December monthly staff meeting will be taking place on Sunday, December 14th at 12:15 pm. Merry Christmas,
Καλα Χριστούγεννα to all of our students, families, and friends.
