SA would like to wish all students and families a happy holidays. We encourage all families to take this break to spend some quality time with their loved ones. Students are also encouraged to spend some time each day completing homework and/or reviewing the material they have learned in the first term, in order to get a head start for next term.

• Religious Assembly December 5th (Martyrdom of the Char Sahibzade)
• Report Cards (Term 1) December 10th • Parent Teacher Conferences December 11th
(Student early dismissal at 12:00PM) • Book Fair December 15-‐17 • Destination Imagination Day December 17th • Winter Assembly December 18th • Winter Break (School Closed) Dec. 22-‐ Jan 2 • School Reopens January 5th
Book Fair Sikh Academy will be hosting its annual book fair at both the Newton and Fleetwood Campuses in December. The book fair will be
open from December 15th to 17th at lunch time and after school from 3:30-‐4:15PM. Students will have a chance to browse the book fair the week before to see what items are available. More information will be sent home with your child. We invite all students and parents to come support this great event, as it helps to raise funds for the school library and books for students. Parents who can volunteer their time can note their names at the school office.
Kindergarten Registration (2015-‐2016) Kindergarten registration for the 2015-‐2016 school year will be open on January 5, 2015. We encourage all parents who are interested in registering their child in Kindergarten to register as soon as possible to
guarantee your child’s spot at Sikh Academy. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate, care card, immunization record, passport-‐size picture of the child, driver’s license of parent, proof of parental residency, and proof of parental address (ie. Utility bill). We want to advise parents that Kindergarten spots fill up extremely quickly due to a limited number of seats. As a result, we are unable to hold any seats without full registration.
Sikh Academy Toy Drive Sikh Academy is proud to work alongside Guru Nanak Free Kitchen to host a toy drive from Dec 1st to Dec 12th at both campuses. Students and parents can donate new toys, which will be wrapped on Dec 13th at the Newton Campus and handed out to those kids in the community
who are not in the position to be given gifts during the holiday season. SA is proud to support these students and families. SA would like to invite all parents to help support this great cause. Any parents who can volunteer to wrap gifts on the 13th can note their names at the school office.
Report Cards Term 1 Report Cards will be handed out on December 10th. We ask parents review the report card with their children and then sign and return the personalized envelopes to acknowledge you have seen the report cards. Parents are to keep the original report card for their records.

Parent-‐Teacher Conferences Parent-‐Teacher conferences are scheduled on December 11th from 12:30-‐4:30PM. To accommodate the parent-‐teacher conferences, students will be dismissed at 12:00 on December 11th. We encourage all
parents to schedule a time with their child’s classroom teacher to discuss student progress. Schedules will be posted outside the classroom for parents to sign up. We remind parents that appointment times are necessary to allow for you to meet with the classroom teacher.
Newton Weekly Schedule SA would like to inform all parents at the Newton Campus that there has been an official change in schedule for our Academic and Gurdwara period. The first academic period begins at 8:25 to 9:05AM, and the Gurdwara assembly has been moved to 9:05-‐9:40. The reason for the change was to make both the academic and Gurdwara periods more efficient and effective. We ask that all parents make an effort to have students in class before 8:25 so they are not missing valuable academic time and instruction. Classroom teachers will be sending home updated weekly timetables for your reference. If there are any questions, please feel free to speak to your classroom teacher or the school administration.
Winter Assembly SA would like to invite all parents and families members to the SA Winter Assembly held on December 18th from 10:15-‐11:30AM at both campuses. Come and see some great student presentations as we celebrate the Winter season.
Winter Break (Dec 22-‐Jan 2) SA will be closed for Winter Break from December 22nd to January 2nd. School will reopen to all students on Monday, January 5th, 2015. We want to remind all students that all homework assignments or projects are expected to be complete upon returning to school in the New Year. SA would like to wish all families a wonderful holiday break.
Sikh History Classes Mr. K. Singh has requested that students in both campuses from Grades 2-‐7, who are taking Sikh History, purchase a hard cover notebook/journal with lined paper inside. Any questions or clarification can be directed to Mr. K. Singh.
Religious Assembly On December 5th, SA will be hosting a religious assembly to commemorate the martyrdom of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s sons Shahidi Char Sahibzade. The PAC will also be providing langar service all students. During this day, SA will bring all Fleetwood students to the Newton Campus for langar, and to have a meet and greet with their peers. Primary students will be leaving Fleetwood at 9:45AM and returning at 11:45AM. Intermediate students will be leaving Fleetwood at 11:45AM and returning at 1:45PM. Any parents interested in helping can notify the school office.
Parent Advisory Council (PAC) The next PAC Meeting at the Newton Campus is scheduled for Dec 8th at 3:30PM, and then January 12th at 3:30PM. The Fleetwood meeting will be on December 3rd and January 7th at 7:00PM at Tim Hortons on Fraser Hwy and 156 St. We invite all parents to come attend. If you cannot attend, but would like to share some information, you can talk to the Administration team to have your voice put forward.
PAC Family Movie Night (Fleetwood) The Fleetwood PAC will be hosting a movie night (Home Alone 2: Lost in New York) on December 17th, 2014 for students from both campuses. The event will be held at our Fleetwood campus, with doors opening at 5:00PM, and the movie beginning at 5:15PM. Tickets will be sold in
advance, and students will be able to purchase snacks. We encourage all SA families to come out and support this great fundraising cause.
School Closures – Extreme Weather As we head into the winter months, there are at times extreme weather conditions which make it difficult to have the school open. To ensure the safety of all parents, students, and teachers during these times, the school may be required to close. If extreme weather is forecasted, please visit the Sikh Academy website and listen to local radio (CKNW and RedFM) for up to date information on the possibility of school closures. SA will make every attempt possible to remain open as long as it is safe for everyone.

Destination Imagination Morning Students at both campuses will be participating in Destination Imagination Morning on Wednesday, December 17th. Teachers will set up activities throughout their classrooms to promote student creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving and community skill building. Students will rotate between activities and learn with their peers.
School Uniform This is a reminder that all students MUST be wearing proper school uniform. From November to March, all students are required to wear their SA sweaters, as per the school policy. Parents are also reminded that navy blue hoodies and zip-‐ups
are NOT part of the school uniform, and as such are not to be worn in school. Students can only wear these items when they go out for recess and lunch. All items worn must have the Sikh Academy school logo and match the school uniform colours. Sikh Academy will begin sending pink slip discipline warnings for students who are not wearing appropriate school uniform.
PAC Subway Lunch The PAC Subway lunch will run once again in December. Subway lunch at the Fleetwood Campus is on Friday,
December 4th, while at the Newton Campus, Subway lunch will be on Friday, December 12th.
Fleetwood Basketball SA Fleetwood will be running after-‐school basketball from now until March. We encourage all students in Grade 3-‐6, who are interested, to participate.
Student Planners We remind parents that they should be checking the student planners daily, and signing it to confirm that all homework has been completed. Teachers, at times, will also use the student planners to send home messages about student progress, or any areas of concern. Parents can also use the planners to send information to the teacher.
FLU Season FLU season is upon us once again. If your child is sick, please do not send them to school, as it raises the concern of the virus being spread to other students. Students, who are sick, should stay home, get their work for the days missed.
Classroom Websites Your child’s teacher has established a classroom website for the class. We ask parents become familiar with the classroom website to keep up to date with what is happening in the classroom. Websites will often list homework, information about projects or any special events. Teacher websites can be accessed from the Sikh Academy website at www.sikhacademy.ca under the Teacher Pages link.
Kirtan Competition SA students have begun to practice for the annual Bhai Mardana Keertan Keertan Competition 2014, which will be held on December 13th at the Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar in front of Sikh Academy from 9:00AM-‐4:30PM. SA will have 5 team from the Newton Campus and 2 teams from the Fleetwood Campus participate. We invite all SA families to come and observe the student presentations. If you have any questions, or you can volunteer to help on this day, please see Mr. Phull at the Newton Campus.
“Caught You Doing Something Good” Each month Sikh Academy will try to highlight students caught doing something good to show how our students take extra steps to be great citizens at school and outside of school. Congratulations to Arshpreet Garcha from 3B in Newton for being “caught” helping others without being asked. Also, congratulations to Simret Shergill from 5A in Fleetwood for being “caught” sharing her swing with other students. We remind all parents to read the Sikh Academy newsletter that is sent to your email or online at www.sikhacademy.ca
