This Month’s Highlights
LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER New York Philharmonic Gala with Yo-Yo MaTuesday, December 31 at 8pm
The New York Philharmonic rings in the New Year with a gala concert from Avery Fisher Hall featuring guest cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert will feature dance-inspired orchestral works, including Azul by Osvaldo Golijov; the world premiere of an arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s La serie del Ángel by Octavio Brunetti, and two classics by Maurice Ravel: Alborada del gracioso and Boléro. Audra McDonald hosts.
AMERICAN MASTERS Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For LoveFriday, December 27 at 9pm
With new interviews with family, Barbra Streisand, Steven Soderbergh, Quincy Jones, Christopher Walken, Sir Tim Rice, Joe Torre, Woody Allen, John Lithgow, Lucie Arnaz, Ann-Margret, and others, this program reveals the events that led to both his staggering success and, ultimately, his even greater humanity: his creative process, struggles, inner turmoil and breakthroughs.
Extreme By DesignWednesday, December 11 at 10pm; Friday, December 13 at 1pm
At a time of unprecedented global challenges, the under-30 millennial generation has every reason to be disengaged. Yet as this hour-long documentary shows, plenty of millennials are engaged. Call it the empathy revolution. Extreme By Design brings this revolution to life by following three Stanford University students as they design and build products to meet basic needs of the world’s poor.
INDEPENDENT LENS: How to Survive a PlagueMonday, December 30 at 10pm
The story of two groups whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry to help identify new drugs and move them from experimental trials to patients. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, the film reveals the controversial actions, heated meetings, heartbreaking failures and exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.

The Metropolitan Opera: RigolettoSaturday, December 7, 1pm
Verdi’s tragic masterpiece Rigoletto commands the respect of critics, performers, and audiences alike. Immensely popular from its premiere in Venice in 1851, the opera resonates with a universality that is frequently called Shakespearean, and it remains fresh and powerful to this day.
The story is one of the most accessible in opera, based on the controversial Victor Hugo play Le roi s’amuse. It’s the tale of a hunchbacked jester, Rigoletto, who struggles to balance the dueling elements of beauty and evil in his life. The score contains a wealth of melody, including one that is among the world’s most famous: “La donna è mobile.”
This new production is set in Las Vegas and was a hit of the Met’s 2012–13 season. Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings the title role, Matthew Polenzani is the womanizing Duke, and Sonya Yoncheva is Gilda.
Glad Tidings of Great JoyTuesday, December 24, 7pm
This holiday special hosted by Bill McGlaughlin takes us from medieval England and Germany to baroque London and Leipzig with the music of Henry Purcell and Johann Sebastian Bach. From the glorious cathedral chant “Veni Emmanuel,” to Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, this program offers some of the most splendid Christmas music ever to come from northern Europe.
Two renowned musical institutions band together in this early music tour de force: the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral Indianapolis, and the Early Music Institute of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, directed by Paul Elliott.
