Write of Way, by Suesan Way

Canadian Geese

Well it is almost another year under the collective belt of the Grand Prix Region... And it has been quite a year.

We upped and moved to a new club house for our Saturday morning breakfast meeting, and we are doing fine at the new location. We are averaging about 75-85 people at each break-fast and all seems well. We had 9 board meetings in 2013, and will have produced the club magazine, the Circuit, 10 times. Our magazine reaches about 2000 people electroni-cally and of course all of our members by the US post. Ad-ditionally, our Circulation Manager, Albert Franco, makes sure that the Circuit is delivered to our advertisers and other supporters of the Grand Prix Region each month.

During 2013, we did 5 performance driving events, our two traditional Day Away from Work (started many years ago by Grand Prix Region members, Michael Dolphin and Perry Bradshaw). Both on a Monday, with the original idea (I believe) being that, basically, that once or twice a year mem-bers of the Grand Prix Region (and friends) just might not be available for work, on certain Mondays of any given year.

We did several great tours, organized by our Tourmeister, Marty Goldsmith. Perhaps it was because we were preparing for Escape, but GPX did more tours in 2013 than any year in recent memory.

We partnered for the 4th year with our friends from San Gabriel Valley Region (SGVR), and did two DE and Zone 8 Time Trials at the historic Pomona road course. We also did a joint event with the Los Vegas Region at Spring Moutain. This was a PCA Club Race and Zone 8 DE/Time Trial.

Grand Prix again partnered with SGVR to Co-Host this year’s National PCA Escape to LA. This Wednesday to Sun-day event was packed with tours, socials, meals and a show-stopping edition of Steve McQueen’s Bullitt at the most fabulous Drive-In Movie you have ever been to, which was packed with rows of nothing but gorgeous Porsches. Watch for much more coverage on the 2013 Escape to 2013.

Our Region put on another beautiful Concours d’Elegance at the Lakewood Country Club in May. We enjoyed the

company of many members of the 912 Registry and of GPX member Wayne Dempsey, owner of Pelican Parts, who brought out his wonderful 959 to be our guest car for the 2013 concours.

We again participated in the annual All Porsche Swap Meet at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim. We had a great day host-ing a Hospitality and Membership tent and enjoyed the day meeting and visiting with all kinds of Porsche friends and enthusiasts.

GPX had many volunteer hours invested in the 2013 edi-tion of the California Festival of Speed. Our members were involved everywhere from managing the grid to getting the perfect photograph for the shot of the year of the 50 years of 911 and a car for each year. What an amazing moment and what a fabulous picture.

At the annual Porsche Club Parade in Traverse City Michi-gan, Grand Prix Region very proudly took first in class for The Circuit, our monthly magazine, with Editor, Skip Carter. A huge congratulations on making the region and the President very proud.

This Saturday, to top the year off, we will have our annual Holiday Party at the Long Beach Yacht Club. We will have just over 80 people joining us for what we believe will be a wonderful evening and great way to end what has been a very successful and fun year for the Grand Prix Region.

We have already started thinking and planning for 2014 and, if you blink, the year and the opportunities will have again passed by, and you will have missed all of the fun (or enjoyed it vicariously through ready the Circuit or going to our website). So don’t let another month (or especially another year) go by. Come out and hang around with other people who have a love for this beautiful marque named Porsche. It comes in many colours, sizes and shapes. They all perform admirably and are guaranteed to supply their own-ers will tons of fun…

The Porsche Club is around to ensure the tons of fun part…Come see us soon.

December 2013

Have we been busy? You betcha! It doesn't matter if you're talking about Suesan and myself or the Grand Prix region in general. We've been busy!

October started with Breakfast Club on the first Saturday and our Day Away from Work DE the next Monday at Streets of Willow. Later in October we had our Escape to LA, of which Suesan was the co-chair and I was tours chair. Years in the planning and crazy nuts work the last several months heading into it. We walked away feeling, well... Feel-ing like we did a good job, all of us. We had so many people tell us how much they enjoyed seeing an LA that few visitors get to see.

The day after Escape ended we had a drivers ed at the Fair-plex. We were home for about a few days before heading to Buttonwillow for a 3-day driving event (what a blast). We left there on Sunday morning to a hotel in Solvang. We were there for a few days checking out the town, the countryside (did I mention the bakeries?), but most of all to spend some time visiting Ruth Levy and her husband, Hog. We had met Ruth through Escape. Ruth was a Porsche racer back in the '50s. Our national Panorama editor, Pete Stout, had wanted to interview Ruth. Suesan managed to put it all together at Escape. Ruth is an outspoken firebrand, and a thoroughly delightful person (if you stay on the good side of her).

We thoroughly enjoyed that visit. Hog is an avid bicyclist (you won't ever catch me doing three 200 mile mountain rides to win a jacket). He took us on a 50 mile drive into the mountains that really gave me a chance to see the country-side, including vistas overlooking the Channel Islands. I can see why they love riding in those hills.

We got back to LA for the LA Auto Show (great Porsche display), then headed home for 1 night. Just enough time to swap clothes in the suitcase, do some laundry, SLEEP IN OUR OWN BED, the head to Ontario for Tech Tactics and the Zone 8 President's meeting.

We thoroughly enjoyed everything, and the Buttonwillow/Solvang part actually felt like a vacation (anything where we're not somehow managing an event qualifies as "vaca-tion." We did have fun.

So in December we've got our first Saturday Breakfast Club followed by our annual Holiday Party that evening. Once those two things are done, we switch to club off mode (OK, it's never really off, just turned down a couple of notches),

WE NEED A NEW EDITORI've decided it's time for me to step down from the editor's job. The hardest part for me (that takes the most time) is the actual production work in InDesign. Sourcing the articles and photos and organizing the content is the easy part (for me). For someone who KNOWS InDesign, that would be the easy part.

So, we're looking for someone who can do anything from the InDesign production part to the whole thing. I'd be happy to work with you for a few months, but it really is time for me to pass the torch.

Like all Porsche enthusiasts, I have had keen interest in the progress of the much anticipated Porsche Experience Center which was announced to us at the Los Angeles Auto Expo in November, 2012. James Taylor, the manager of this entire project for Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), was kind enough to meet with me for an update.

James is based at Porsche headquarters in Atlanta, but he frequently comes to the west coast to oversee the development of the Center. Simultaneously he is supervising the construction of another Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. He has much expertise in building these Experience Centers, having created one in Silverstone, England near where he spent his youth involved in motorsports.

Porsche has broken ground on the 53-acre site in Carson, California next to the 405 Freeway. Broken ground is actually quite an understatement, as grading of the former golf course and importation of up to fifty truckloads of topsoil per day have been ongoing over the last several months to prepare the site for construction.

The most visible parts of the construction have yet to begin. They include the tight road course and training track, a skid pad to simulate varying road conditions, an all-terrain track, and the facility’s main building. The building will include a driver fitness center focused on motors-port, classrooms, and a gift shop. There will be a casual family style restaurant on the ground floor and a more businesslike dining room upstairs suitable for corporate meetings.

Porsche Motorsport will be relocating to this facility from its current location in Santa Ana. It will be bringing its collection of vintage race cars for display.

James’ vision for the Porsche Experience Center is to bring more people into the Porsche family and engage prospective and current customers in the enthusiasm that we all share for the brand. This can be done with new product rollouts, dealer support events, and club involvement (that would be us, folks). Driver training will be available for those who want to discover the immense capabilities of Porsche vehicles. Porsche drivers might want to include members of their family since the center will have a focus on youth and developing street-driving awareness.

This effort by Porsche really distinguishes it from any other brand of auto manufacturer. It’s exciting to imagine the endless possible uses of this facility. I’m sure we all have great feelings of anticipation for the grand opening scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2014. I look forward to our club hosting events at the Center since we’re fortunate to have it in our own back yard.

I've attended 18-20 Porsche Parades since my first in San Diego in 1992. They have all been fun — some better than others, but all wonderful experiences.

This last June Suesan and I flew to Detroit, grabbed a rental car for the 4-hour drive North to Traverse City. Somehow the subcompact turned into a Dodge Charger (they were crowded and I was directed to pick the color Charger I wanted). Of course, when we turned the car in there was a $300 upgrade fee included (It only took one phone call to get that changed).

We stopped for lunch. I thought about digging the Valentine out of the suitcase, but laziness got the better of me. I could have guaranteed that ticket. The good part was that Michigan has a no-points program. It still cost money.

Having never been to this part of the country, I had no expectations about Traverse City and the surrounding area, but ever since Traverse City was announced as the Parade site, people have been telling us how wonderful the area was, and that 80% of the world's cherries are grown there. We did find the cherries and, boy, were they good. Since returning home I've mail order purchased more than one 4# box of dark chocolate covered dried cherries (yum).

We are accustomed to being Porscheless at Parades. I'm not saying it's my first choice, but the extra days we'd need to drive don't currently fit with running a company. Not to mention that, until recently, the 356 was our only Porsche choice and... Well, that's another story.

Driving a non-Porsche restricted us to driving tours, of which were in good supply. There is a lot of water up there, and a lot of natural beauty. The Gimmick Rally was particularly fun. By its nature you need to drive slow and pay attention trying to identify 25 or so photos along the way. That rally is designed to show off some of the great things to see, and it did an excellent job.

Our other favorite tour was to Mackinac Island. It was a 3-hour drive one way to the ferry. Fortunately our Garmin alerted us to a significant road closure and we easily diverted east to avoid the problem.

Mackinac Island is open during the warmer months of the year and has no motorized vehicles. Everything is horse drawn or human powered (there are a few exceptions - ambulance, etc). The tour included ferry passage and a drive over the magnificent Mackinac Bridge. The highlight of the island was the fabulous buffet lunch and the famous Grand Hotel. If was patently clear that this was going to be a long, slow lunch. It had nothing to do with the quantity. The quality was very good. The Grand was built in 1887 and is famous for several reasons, including its 660 foot long front porch, a great place to sit and look out over the island and waters that join Lakes Michigan and Huron. It is also well-know as the setting for the movie Somewhere in Time.

Suesan and I both have volunteer jobs. Suesan operates Parade Concierge and I oversee the Concours Prep areas. We enjoy being part of the team that works hard so people have a great experience at Parade. It's fun.

You could not ask for better weather. Parade had the entire Traverse City Resort. There were Porsches everywhere. We noticed a lot of media personnel hanging around. It didn't take long to figure out why. Porsche debuted two new 911 models in Traverse City: the 50th Anniversary 911 and the 991 GT3. Not only did they get unveiled in front of us, but they were there for the weeks for us to get to know a little better.

When Parade ended, we headed north to Sault Sainte Marie, then east towards Toronto, with a lovely drive to the ferry on Manitoulin Island. After visiting family and friends in Toronto, we looped back to Detroit to visit Suesan's cousins. We got to spend some time in the Ford Museum (need to go back to that one) and enjoyed some great deep dish pizza on Woodward Avenue (need to go back there too).

It was a great two weeks, not too rushed but still got to see a lot of new and very great country and drove some fun roads. The people were, as always, fun. There's a buzz a Parade. We enjoy being part of it.

Angeles Crest Highway Tour story by Jason Zammit

photos by Kelly Pape & Jason Zammit

DAY ONE:The plan for the day was for some exciting mountain driving on the Angeles Crest Highway, visit Mt Wilson Observa-tory and talk everything Porsche with like-minded new friends.

Our group of about 50 Porsches drove 35 miles from The Sheraton Fairplex and gathered at the Shell station at the base of Wrightwood and the I-15. As the tail vehicle, my responsibil-ity was to ensure any drivers that got lost or had problems were taken care of and, with the aid of walkie talkies, I kept in com-munication with Jeff Peck, lead driver for our group.

Tourmeister Marty Goldsmith assured us that although we were driving near the Mountain High Ski Resort, there would be no snow. But with recent rain and colder weather, the dark sides of the mountain had considerable ice and I needed to put the top up on my cabriolet as the seat warmer just wasn't cutting the mustard. The brisk air added to the exhilarating scenery and the excitement of the drive. The sheer rock cliffs jumping out of the side of the road with diagonal lines are an all frequent reminder that we are on major fault line and these mountains are growing in height annually.

We were scooting along at a fine pace when we suddenly slowed to a crawl. I radioed ahead and learned that there had been a rock slide. Whilst no one was hurt, all were taking care to avoid the rock strewn section of pavement. Unfortu-nately, I noticed my 996 was not handling right, so I pulled over and found a tire almost completely flat. Shortly after pulling over, Patrick and Linda Schmidt from Diablo region stopped in their '84 Targa and helped change the tire. Before long we had caught our group at a view stop. I asked about an air compressor and Laverne Thomas (another Diablo region member) was quick with the goods. We found the sidewall damage, so I would have to drive on my spare.

We continued to Newcomb's Ranch and while my friends enjoyed their Porsches in all their glory, I slowly made my way up the mountain keeping the speed and the G forces off my emergency wheel. I decided that it was better to retire the car for the day than for the car to retire me permanently, so I took a look at some of the cars and spoke to some of the owners before heading in for a late "Country Breakfast."

Ed: The recent Porsche Escape had five mountain tours, Angeles Crest Highway being one. Marty Gold-smith and Jeff Peck were the tour leaders, with several other " locals" helping. Jason Zammit was one of our volunteers for the two days we ran this tour. As the Escape Tours director, I want to take this opportunity to thank Jason and every else who helped make Escape the wonderful success it was. Thank you!

After my appetite was quelled, I took up that responsible rate down the hill and soon came across some of the group as they were leaving Mount Wilson Observatory. I pulled over to let them pass. The only thing more beautiful than watching those Porsches zoom through that canyon was for me to experience it myself (maybe another time).

The handling on the spare was better than expected, but I was not going to drive another two hundred mountain miles and a further 70 freeway miles home on this emergency tire that was rated for 50 miles per hour. DAY TWO: "Too Spare or not too spare" or "When Goo Just Won’t Do" After the sidewall damage the previous day, I felt I needed to return to the mountain to complete what I had started. I collected my repaired tire, mounted it and then headed up to Newcomb’s Ranch. Based on the previ-ous days schedule, I thought I could meet the group about 10:30 and, if I was late, I would see them coming from the opposite direction. I started up the "2" from La Canada Flintridge with an open road, rarely seeing vehicles in either direction. When I came across "less spirited" driv-ers, they pulled over and let me pass. The previous day I returned from the mountain drive in my crippled 996 in a slow manner, so I wanted to make amends today (I love the smell of cosmoline** in the morning!). After arriving at Newcomb’s Ranch I met Jeff and Marty to plan our descent. I was privileged to be able to take the lead of the "spirited group" and set a hearty pace to the entrance of Mount Wilson Observatory. When I arrived I recognized Ted Lighthizier and Doreen Pankow from Santa Barbara, who were there to help the second half of the tour. Once parked at the observatory we soaked in the magnificent views, swapped war stories and prepared for the next leg of the tour. Marty called the group to order, presented options and let each member decide whether they wanted to go the long route (another 100 miles of mountain driv-ing) or the short way (30 miles to Pasadena and lunch).

Myself and six other cars chose the long route, which Ted and Doreen would lead. We headed west towards La Canada, but turned right at Angeles Forest Highway. The environment was desolate yet beautiful, and the weather magnificent. The air was fresh and clean with very few cars in either direction, so we took advantage of this opportunity and let our cars express our feelings with the suitable speed for the occasion. I felt like I was at Six Flags on a roller coaster with each turn better than the last. Porsche roads!

I signaled Jimmie Mitchell to pass me so that I could pull over and take my camera off the wind-shield. Even though it only took a minute, the group was well out-of-site. I got back up to speed in no time and then notice a beautiful Seal Gray 997 coming towards me — it was Jimmie. He doubled back to make sure I was ok. When I got to Mount Emma Road I waited for Jimmie to catch up so he would not miss that turn. Jimmie and I travelled a few miles before finding the rest of the group wait-ing for us on the side of the road. It was now time for some mostly straight road driv-ing, but the roller coaster ride continued with some rises up and down in the road. The scenery was changing back to more trees and with that the color in the leaves from every shade of green through the fall colors of reds and yellows. We continued through Fort Tejon Road and then Pallett Creek Road. I felt sorry for the coupes. Those of us in cab-riolets couldn't ask for better "top down" conditions — absolutely perfect. Another 20 miles of driving and we were back in Wrightwood for some lunch. We chose the Evergreen Cafe as suggested by Marty. After lunch we all went our separate ways, some back to the hotel heading east to Interstate 15. Our guides, Ted and Doreen, headed west back to Ven-tura County via the 138. Me, I had not had my fill of twisties, so I drove the 60 miles on Angeles Crest highway back to La Canada and the I-210 freeway. I headed home with a smile on face.

Thanks Marty and Jeff for a great two days of driv-ing through the forest and spending the time to work out the route, practice it and deliver it to us. **Cosmoline is an oil-based protectant applied to Porsche (and some other vehicles) engines to mini-mize deterioration from the environment. When suitably heated it will produce a sweet burning smell.

by Bruce Herrington, Orange Coast RegionBook Reviews for PorschephilesPORSCHE 911: 50 Yearsby Randy Leffingwellpublished by Motorbooks, Minneapolis, MN

Bruce Herrington

Randy Leffingwell's books are always a visual delight. This book is much more than a book of pictures of 50 years of 911s, and really, it is more than a book about 911s. The ini-tial chapter tells more about the evolution of Porsche designs in the '50s and early '60s (and the design numbers involved) than this reviewer has seen anywhere else.

The publisher calls this book: "The definitive history of one of Porsche's most storied and enduring cars. Featuring over 200 photos, extensive interviews and inside looks....” To this reviewer, they are selling their book short — it has many more than 200 photos and the interviews documented inside cover much more that just “one of Porsche's... cars”.

Unlike previous Leffingwell books, the majority of all these photos are not by him, but come from the Porsche Archive instead. Similarly, most of the words are by factory employees describing their experiences over the years with Porsche AG. Really, this book functions as the Porsche Factory History — collected, compiled and edited by Randy Leffingwell.

Though the title is very timely and meaningful, this book does deal with the vehicles and design efforts produced over the dozen or so years leading up to the first production 901. It also touches on the alternate vehicles which have carried the Porsche name during the 911 era. Particularly interesting to this reviewer is the number of photographs of full-scale mockups of design alternatives for the 901, many with com-peting designs on each side of a single mockup.

PORSCHE 911: 50 Years is not a sequence of write-ups on the 911s of each of the 50 years they have been produced. In fact, the book is divided into only four chapters: Colli-sion Course; Evolution Version 1.0; Evolution Version 2.0;

and Racing the 911. The first three chapters flow as continuously as did the design evolution of Porsche automobiles.

Porsche has generally presented a solid, focused image to the outside world, but this book clearly documents infighting between design teams and the on-going schisms that occurred be-

tween those promoting the evolution-ary next Porsche, and those advocating a revolutionary new Porsche. Many sig-nificant members of the Porsche design team left, for whatever reason, only to return to even more significant leader-ship posts. Perhaps the best illustration of the thoroughness and completeness of the research on which this book is based is the coverage given to the controversy over what material should be used for constructing the mockups of proposed designs.

Much of the story is told in first person by individuals both known and un-known. The collection and compilation of all these recollections and reminis-cences must have been a major effort, but the result provides an un-match-able, never to be improved upon, in-sight into the projects and personalities

involved in the first half-century of Porsche AG. PCA has its slogan “It's not the cars it's the people.” PORSCHE 911: 50 Years is not just about the cars; it's perhaps even more about the people of Porsche. It surly will be a classic that every Porsche enthusiast must have in his/her library, along with Ludvigsen's Excellence Was Expected.

There are 256 10x12-1/4 inch pages with 500 pictures, half in color. A very comprehensive index is included, with 5 pag-es of 3 columns each. By the time you read this, PORSCHE 911: 50 Years should be available for $50.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from http://www.motorbooks.com.

November Board Meeting Minutesby Marty Goldsmith, Secretary

Brita & Marty Goldsmith

The meeting was called to order at 10:50AM. Present were Suesan Way, David Hockett, Martin Goldsmith, , Susan Moard, Gail Sachs, Skip Carter, Dan Hockett, Jack Case, Brita Goldsmith, John and Patty Reilly, Charles Weaver, Bob Graia, Cathy Robson, Jimmie Mitchell, Roger Lubec, Rico Lopez, Arturo Chaparro, Michael Dolphin, David Moard, and Mike Mulligan.

It was noted for the minutes that Rochelle Booth has resigned as Treasurer and Linda Cobarrubias has been appointed in her place.

President Way said that the majority of this meeting would be devoted to discussion of the finances of the Spring Mountain driving event held earlier this year.

Suesan first reported that final financial numbers from Escape were not yet available, as the hotel and other bills were still being dealt with. She reviewed the events of Escape, and it can only be judged a great artistic success. All tours were successful, the meals were excellent, and the overall atmosphere was upbeat and convivial.

Skip then opened the Spring Mountain discussion. At our August Board meeting, we had an opportu-nity to review the event budgets, projections, invoices and final accounting. After much discussion, the board came up with a figure that we felt fair to offer LVR to resolve the finances. Skip then spoke with the LVR president, Salomon Braun. Salomon presented a number that he hoped would be acceptible to GPX and that he felt his board would find acceptible. Skip told Salomon that his number was in the ballpark of what the GPX board thought reasonable. Salomon intended to take this to his board at their next meeting.

On November 1 Skip received an email from Salomon which included a spreadsheet. LVR had in-creased their demand by 50% over the number previously discussed by Skip and Salomon.

The details of their position were discussed at length, and many aspects of it were thought to be unsat-isfactory. The GPX Board then passed a motion that the Secretary should prepare a summary of our reaction to the LVR proposal, and that that no further action will be taken at this time.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:45.

Tilted Kilt IIOctober was month two at our new Breakfast Club location, the Tilted Kilt on PCH near 2nd in Long Beach. The response has been very, very good. People love the food. It's a very comfortable place, and the omelette bar seemed to have a constant line waiting. They've got a great back room where we had our board meeting (while ordering lunch off their wonderful menu).

911 Design's Loren Beggs was scheduled to bring a couple of race cars out and do some schoolin' about building and driving race cars (and Loren certainly should know). Unfortunately, Loren came down with the flu, so we'll see him in a few months when we can reschedule. That will be one NOT to miss.

Madam President brought plenty of door prizes (which is always fun). This Breakfast marked the beginning of a very busy month for GPX. A DE at Streets of Willow, followed soon after by Escape to LA, immediately followed by a DE/Time Trial at Fairplex. And it didn't stop there. Suesan and I spent 3 days at Buttonwillow for the PCA Club Race / Time Trial, then a couple of days in the Santa Ynez Valley visiting Ruth Levy, then to LA for the Auto Show, home for one night then back to Ontario for Tech Tactics and the Zone 8 President's Meeting. But December promises a break, right after our Holiday Party (yeah).
