Presidents Letter December 2013 What an exciting month November has been! 116 members and guests

enjoyed a splendid evening at the Club’s 25th Birthday Party at Tiki-

tano. Thanks to Jo-Anna for organising it. Excellent service, good food

and music that we all enjoyed dancing to. Our Theatre Group was well supported over three evenings and the performers gave their all as

usual. Thanks to Yvonne for producing it.

To make things happen in the Club, we need volunteers in any capacity and we are especially desperate for bar staff, so even one session a month would be a great help

and Maureen needs hosts or hostesses for Thursday mornings – even one day A

YEAR would help. Christmas is once again upon us with the Club Christmas Lunch on the 19 th Decem-

ber in the clubhouse, so thanks in advance to Brenda and all the catering brigades.

Maureen will once again be hosting the Christmas morning celebration in the club-

house and is looking for small gifts to wrap up so that everyone who attends receives a gift.

All these require holding down the Alt key while entering the numbers on the

Urgent Warning: A particularly nasty computer virus was released in September 2013. Cryptolocker encrypts all your files and then asks you to pay a ransom (US$300) within 4 days to decrypt them. If you don’t pay within 4 days, they can never be decrypted and you have effectively lost them. While your anti-virus soft-ware may detect it, it’s always best to avoid the problem. Don’t open any attach-ments to emails, the source of which is not recognised.

Scam of the Month December 2013

DISASTER NEWS SCAM

Sometimes a person’s email account is hacked and all the contacts receive an email purport-

ing to be from the person and stating such information as she was on holiday, had been

mugged and had everything stolen It then went on to ask for help settling a hotel bill, getting a flight etc.

Take no notice – the person is probably still at home

So Where Were We During November

Off we went to discover Porto in Portugal and include a 6 day river cruise. The holiday was

great, a long drive the first day to Porto and if we did it again we would stop half way for the

night.

But the roads were very quiet, a pleasurable drive, and some really nice country side and vil-lages to drive through

We started from home at about 6.30am and took a pack up with us and just had a few short

stops for fuel and drinks. On the first stop past Seville by the time we had eaten and drank

they had closed the slip road back onto dual carriageway entirely for roadwork's, we needed

to go back towards Seville and detour well out of our way to get back in the right direction.

And tom tom had a little mad moment as we were nearly at Porto telling us to keep left and

take the exit, but that was on the right and we were on a 4 lane busy motor way with us on

the left as he had told us, but we sorted it out by the next exit We arrived at the hotel at about

7.00pm well ready for a beer and a glass of wine.

The boat cruise from Porto on river Douro was very good, compact cabin with a very big

window so you could sit in your cabin and watch the birds and other boats. The food was

very good a mixture of French and Portuguese, but with a three course lunch and a four course dinner every day, with wine kept flowing, at both was no good for the waist line.

The excursions from the boat were interesting and not that expensive.

Terry and I were the only English on board but some of the French and Swiss spoke English

and the Russian couple on our dinner table one of them could speak it as well, so we man-

aged fairly well. All the crew spoke good English, and on the excursions we had our very

own guide, some of the others joined us so they could improve their English.

It was a very relaxed trip and we would do it again as with only 142 passengers to look after

you are very well looked after, the evening entertainment was good the gala night was maybe

the one night that was a bit of a letdown.

Our last couple of nights on the trip home we stopped at a hotel in a town called Elvas just

15km from the Spanish border, it is a walled town on the lines of Chester but far more walls left as it was double walled with a lot of grassed area between. A lot of history here with

many battles on the border that could be seen from the towns elevated position. Wellington

was actually based here at one time during battle with the French. The hotel was a converted

old convent and very beautiful and far more luxurious than I thought it would be as we only

paid for the two of us 110€ for two night B & B and they even had a cooked breakfast on the

menu.

We found eating out in Portugal to be cheaper that Spain, of good quality, and except for

tourist area’s in Porto we never paid more than 70cent for cup of white coffee!!!

But it’s back to normal now washing and ironing coming out of the wood work I don’t know

where it all comes from, and of course I have to remember how to cook!!!

Tuesday 15th 0ctober - ICE Golf Society Autumn Cup 2013

A rocket was fired at 08.45 at Valle Romano Golf Club and 16 intrepid ICE Club golfers,

placed strategically around the course, teed off at the beginning of the ICE Club Autumn

Cup. Another 15 started as the first groups moved on to the next holes. The course at Valle

Romano was in excellent condition and many people returned very good scores. There were prizes for ‘Nearest the Pin’, both ladies and gents prizes for ‘Longest Drive’ and, of course,

the Winner’s Trophy plus a very elegant new trophy for the lady with the highest score.

Alan Davis, the ICE Club Golf Organiser, had gone to a lot of trouble to work out the group-

ings and order of play, liaising with Valle Romano to ensure that the day went smoothly.

After playing all 18 holes we returned our score cards to Terry Byrne and Alan, who together

checked them and worked out the prize winners. Most people returned excellent scores

(unfortunately I was not among them) and after refreshing showers at the clubhouse, we all

made tracks for Restaurante Swing where Doug Mitchell had organised the Presentation

Lunch.

Over 60 club members enjoyed a delicious meal, some to such an extent that Alan had diffi-

culty making himself heard for the prize-giving.

Overall Winner was Fernando Mata with a very good 40 points – unfortunately Fernando had not renewed his ICE Club Membership and was therefore not eligible to take the Trophy,

which instead went to Derrick Simpson with a score of 36. The Trophy was received on Der-

rick’s behalf by his wife Doreen.

Highest Scoring Lady was Christine Johnson with 29 points (on countback): Longest Drive

(Men) Terry Byrne, (Ladies) Mariska Turkinburg : Nearest the Pin was Marcella Clancy and

the Best Score by a Newcomer was Aileen Hyde with 16 points.

Thanks to Alan for all the hard work he put into the organisation of a great day’s golf – we

look forward to the Spring Cup which will be held on 22 April 2014, Autumn cup 14th Octo-

International Club of Estepona - Golf Society

We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club

where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly

competition is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ bases and we play individual sta-

bleford, using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent upon the time of

year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all

very friendly, light hearted and is open to all.

We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, held in April, and

The Autumn Cup in October. These have become great social events with a very popular

celebratory luncheon after each.

The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player re-

cording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘Roll- Ups’ during

the 12 months between each Spring Cup.

In addition we also arrange ‘Away Days’, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within

the local area. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually given a

Saturday 19th October - Autumn Fayre

What a great turn out we had this year, all the games and stalls on the ground floor were kept busy, as was the bar, and good trade done with sausage and bacon butties (very tasty they were too). Unfortunately there was a noticeable absence of competitors upstairs for flower and vegetable arrang-ing, cooking, and could have with more photo’s. Well done Doug for the organising, Mac and Jackie for manning the busy bar (ran out of cava due to demand). Thanks also to all helpers and competitors. A great event for the club. Wednesday 23rd October - Trip to Seville Rather an early start for our trip Seville, first pickup in Sabinillas at 8.00pm continuing picking up mem-bers along the way, then off we went to Ronda on a very misty morning not the best of days to see the wonderful views however this did not dispirit the club members, after the coffee stop we set forth to Seville the weather improved as we travelled along. The coach dropped some of the members off at the Gold Tower the rest of us stayed on the coach the driver took us as near possible to the Metropol Parasol which was the main destination of our trip, the building is quite amazing, designed by a German architect Jurgan Meyer the area chosen for the pro-ject was a very run down area of Seville it consists of different levels the ground floor has ruins which are covered with a glass floor enabling the public to walk over the ruins, a lift takes you to the top of the building which has a circular walkway of some distance where you have the most amazing panoramic view of Seville. Plenty of free time to explore Seville, back to the Gold Tower to await our coach for our return home a very good trip. Thank you Joan. Submitted by Pat Brookes

Sunday 27th October - Club Open Day A very successful lunchtime, a number of prospective members attended and Doug was busy signing some up on the day. Some who have been previous members said how nice the club now looks. Thanks go to all those that helped on what was a very busy morning. Les thought it would be a quiet day, after not long returned from his and Audrey's holiday trip, offering to man the bar, thanks to them. Thanks also to Peter for help behind bar and Brenda for the tapas.

Friday 25th October - Bird Watching Group Meeting 6 of us met with John Brooks, our leader for the day, at Duquesa Golf Club at 8.30 am for the inaugural meeting of the Bird watching section of the club. Having carried out our introductions, we proceeded to Palmones Estuary, collecting Catherine on the way at the Pot shop. John knew a way to get in to the disused nature park in Algeciras, so we followed him through the back streets of Algeciras to this nature reserve. This reserve apparently was made several years ago with the help of unemployed youngsters, >>12

<< 11 but some 5 years ago, the gate was locked and all access was denied. However John knew of a place where the fence had been partially removed and we made our way, somewhat in trepidation, as the path was adjacent to a very foul looking tributary. We made our way on to the road, that had been built to circumvent the reserve and came across a 2 story hide overlooking the estuary. Here we saw many different species of Birds including about 12+ Grey Herons, and some very active Cormorants, One apparently an expert fisher. We also saw a Kingfisher in the distance, and many dif-ferent species of gulls. We also had a large flock of Goldfinch, who were consistently flying in and out of a nearby tree, together with the occasional Greenfinch flying with them, and a large number of Storks on the marsh in the distance. We were just about to leave the hide when our attention was drawn to a Marsh Harrier flying in from the West so we stayed for another ½ hour to watch the activities of this Bird. We then drove to Palmones village where there are many watering holes along the river bank, and most took advantage of the Tostada and Coffee for 2 Euros. We all sat outside as we were still able to observe the birds, and later we walked to the end of the river where it joins the Bay of Gibraltar. Looking across at the mudflats we saw what we all thought was a flock of sea-gulls, with John’s aid, he was able to identify for us some 4 different species of Birds, and on the walk back to the cars we were entertained by a Ringed Plover walking across a boat tied up on the mudflats. We departed around 1.30 pm to return home having seen 27 different species during the morning. We all agreed it was an excellent idea of John’s, and we all look forward to the next trip that John is organ-ising. Species List: Marsh Harrier, Sardinian Warbler, Kingfisher, Mallard, Grey Plover, Little Grebe, Little Ringed Plover, Black winged Stilt, Ringed Plover, House Sparrow, Black headed Gull, Yellow Wagtail, Yellow legged Gull, Sandwich Tern, Mediterranean Gull, Redshank, Cormorant, Blackbird, Grey Heron, Goldfinch, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Common Sandpiper, White Stork, Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Cetti’s Warbler. Saturday 2nd November - Club 25th Birthday Celebrations 116 ICE Club members and guests donned their best bib and tucker to celebrate the clubs 25th anniversary. The venue - Tikitano - provided a glittering backdrop to a fun filled evening. Jos Huisman captured guests on arrival (good idea to get those photos early!). A welcome aperitif was offered, before guests mingled and took their places for the delicious, three course meal, served promptly, and efficiently to all. As the wine flowed, conversation became louder and everyone seemed to be in the mood for enter-tainer Mel Williams, who managed to get the movers and shakers on to the dance floor from the mo-ment he started playing to the very end! We could have done with a bigger dance floor! During Mel's well earned break, the much awaited raffle was drawn. The prizes were sponsored by Blevins Franks - a big thank you - and the first prize was won by Sue and Rob Potter, congratulations. Just as the evening drew to a close, and we thought it was all over - a wonderful firework display took place - provided by the 50th birthday party taking place in the room next to us. The Old Bull and Bush In November rumours reached the CAP Club that a great evening could be enjoyed at The Old Bull and Bush. Unwilling to resist the promise of such a spectacle, one Friday two carloads of CAP members set off, bound for the ICE Club, all eager to experience not only the entertainment and beer, but also the culinary delights of pies, though whether these would be served with peas and pickles was a subject of

debate! Well, we were not disappointed … a top-hatted Master of Ceremonies orchestrated events, lines were delivered confidently and solos sung beautifully - accompanied by the hidden organist. We lustily joined in the communal singing of well known songs, chortled at modestly dressed nuns behaving inappropriately and laughed uproariously at an immodestly dressed ‘substitute’ behaving entirely appropriately! Well done also to the oft-forgotten behind-the-scenes crew – the set builders, the lighting team, the costume collectors, the ticket sellers etc. etc. Everyone did a grand job! It would be unfair to single out any cast member for praise, as all poured their hearts and souls into the enterprise, but congratulations must be given to Yvonne Harrison who not only wrote but also directed the play. Friday 13th December - Trip to Malaga Christmas Lights First pickup Sabinillas 4.00pm, return Malaga 10.00pm. Time for a drink, supper and shop. 8€ members, 11€ guests, tickets required. The city authorities put about 2.5 million Christ-mas lights downtown, at night the streets are full of people who come to visit. Calle Larios is the main street (famous for being paved with marble) and there are portals above the street with lights every few meters so the whole street is alight. Each street with a different coloured decoration. You could not ask for a more beautiful Christmas street scenes.

Sunday 15th December - Christmas Concert at the Clubhouse A night to remember and sing your favourite Carols and have some fun with the 12 Days of Christmas and other popular Christmas Songs. Song sheets will be provided and now is the time to let me know if you would like something special included in the Programme. Even if you are dining later, you can still spend a pleasant few hours with friends in your club. As usual there will be a free raffle, hopefully I can collect lots of prizes (hint – hint). A year in the life of an I.C.E. Club member. David & Diane Hackett

We joined the Ice Club in December 2012, on the Thursday following the Open Day, which

was held on the last Sunday in November..

We soon realised that the main reason for joining the club was to experience various activi-

ties that the club is involved with, and we are of the opinion that you get out what you put in. The club is always looking for volunteers, so we became very involved in the club, Diane

helping in the Kitchen preparing the meals for Thursday lunches, and David with his interest

in Computers, helping beginners find their feet.

We try whenever possible to go on all the coach trips, including the stay away trips, the

coach trips are usually to places away from the normal tourist areas, so we are able to experi-

ence other parts of Spain, within the local area.

The Ladies lunches are another pastime that Diane enjoys, and David goes to the Men’s

lunches as the driver. These are very good activities to partake in, as you get to meet other

club members in a social atmosphere.

We have both recently taken up bowls on a Monday morning, we both enjoy bowling, and

although beginners, we have won bottles of wine for being nearest the jack on 7 occasions

out of 11. We usually support the theme nights that are held on Saturday evenings, once a month, and

again this is a very social evening where you meet other members.

Every Thursday, Mavis sells “Lottery” tickets for 1 euro, and a draw is held on the last

Thursday of the month, for the winning 3 tickets. To date we have won between us 3 times,

so as they say, you have to be in it to win it.

Throughout the year functions are held, corresponding to the time of year, and David is the

current holder of the Men’s Pancake Race, two laps around the swimming pool, tossing a

pancake three times at 7 different points around the circuit. This will be undefended in 2014,

as we will be out of the country, so come on you Men, and Ladies, support the Pancake Day

celebrations on 4th March.

We met up with Rambling section on several occasions in the early part of the year, but found that for us, the rambling was too difficult, as we are not experienced walkers, so we

need to start this activity, at our time of life a little more sedately. You never know until you

try it, and it may well suit other people so give it a try.

That is one of the beauties of the club that the various activities can be tried, and you can find

out if it is for you.

We have also attended music nights, held once a month and we particularly like the evenings

when videos of Andre Rieu are played.

The drama group put on 2 performances a year, one a pantomime, and this is another activity

that we try and support.

Many of the older members, no, the longer standing members of the club, think we have been

in the club for many years, but no, it is just a year.

Come on you NEW Members, and some of the older ones too, VOLUNTEER to get in-volved, and you will get much more enjoyment from being a member.

Norma's Tip. My tip for people with large plants on balconies or patios. I bought a round

metal frame with four small wheels from my local ferretería (made for moving heavy gas

bottles). It was red so I painted it green. It is ideal for moving plants in large pots to facilitate

sweeping or re-arranging. Helps to avoid back pain. Submitted by Norma Danby

Gardening Club News

Although our visit to Molino del Santo hotel/restaurant in September

was the last meeting this year for the Gardening Club, we have certainly

not been idle. Our President Doug asked me if the Gardening Club

could improve the garden in front of our newly refurbished ICE club. As we know the club has truly been enhanced inside and out and it

was only the front flower beds that were still looking very untidy. We asked our gardening

members to offer any shrubs, plants etc. they no longer wanted. Unfortunately most of the

shrubs, cacti, plants offered were not suitable. The first thing to do was to prepare the flower

beds and so Keith and Helen Rumsey and myself spent a Sunday morning digging up all the

weeds and getting rid of stones, roots etc. Keith measured the flower beds and drew a

plan. Off we went to a Garden Centre to sort out suitable bags of soil and to decide what

shrubs/plants could be suitable. We made a note of all the names and Keith kindly checked

his gardening books and his computer as to their suitability for a north facing flower bed, size

they grow to etc. A morning was then spent spreading the soil and manure into the flower

beds and a further Sunday and Monday morning planting all the shrubs, plants etc.

The next problem was irrigation. Again Keith stepped in. He spent some time and a lot of effort into solving this problem so the front beds will be watered efficiently.

Lastly, the kitchen staff had also requested some herbs for their flowerbed outside the kitchen

and so we also bought herbs suitable for the soil and others to grow in their pots.

A lot of hard work and time has been taken in improving the flowerbeds and a huge thank

you to Keith and Helen in helping me so much with Doug’s request. I know I couldn’t have

The Reg Astle Trophy was played

on the 21st October and there were

twelve competitors. The four highest point scorers to reach the semi-finals

were namely Denis, Diana, Terry and

Vic, producing Denis and Terry as the

finalists’ Well done Terry who pre-

vailed and duly presented the trophy

by Reg.

1st and Trophy winner was Terry,

runner up Denis, 3rd Diana, 4th Vic,

all received a bottle of wine.

Benavista Club Challenge Match

was played on 28th October with joined forces under the banner ‘Independent Club of Este-

pona’ this increasing our numbers to nineteen competitors formed into six teams. We had hoped to better last years defeat losing by four to two. Unfortunately we went down six to nil

against a strong and experienced team. We put up a good fight as ‘part timers’ versus league

players, so looking to improve next year.

We always finish the Monday games with a ‘shoot out’ for bottles of wine. Vic as with others

have always been vociferous about the quality of the wines I offer as prizes. He and others

cast doubt simply because at times the bottles don’t have labels or they leak through the

corks! Then we have inferences that the wines have the qualities to sterilize certain bathroom

fixtures! I reject most vehemently these falsehoods and should like to point out that there

have been no reports of death by wine-poisoning!!!!!!!!

Late arrivals can not be guaranteed a game. Players are organised by

‘ranking’ in order to have teams of more or less equal standing.

Most matches are played over 16 ends but this can be 18 by mutual

agreement of all players.

Dress code is predominantly white but the critical factor is footwear.

Shoes must be smooth-soled with no ‘pimples or crinkles’. This is to

prevent undue damage to playing surface which is the duty of all to maintain in good condi-

tion.

Beginners will be coached by prior arrangement to achieve the required level to compete.

The title was deliberately chosen as most of us play Monday only.

We are an informal group and not ‘Officially Recognised’. Hence this gives us a degree of license when interpreting the rules as officially prescribed. Alan Whiteman

This Months Recipe - Rib Ragù

Ingredients:

1 rack pork ribs 3 tbsp olive oil 2 carrots, chopped

1 celery rib, chopped 1 onion, chopped 500ml/18fl oz stock

A little oil 200g/7oz pappardelle pasta

Preparation Method:

1. Heat half of the oil in a large pan. Cut the ribs into thirds with

a sharp knife and add to the pan.

2. When the ribs are brown, remove them from the pan, add the

rest of the oil and soften the carrots, celery and onion.

3. When the vegetables are softened, return the ribs to the pan

and pour over the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer on a

low heat for three hours.

4. Cook the pasta according to packet instructions in a pan of

boiling salted water until tender. Drain well. When 3

hours have elapsed, pick out the rib bones and discard.

Serve with the cooked pasta.

30 minutes preparation, over 3

hours cooking time, serves 2-3 people.

Coach trips: See trip information for times. Please ensure that you sit in the seat numbered on your

ticket. We regret that we cannot stop at any other point unless agreed with organiser, to pick up or put

down. The organiser reserves the right to refuse to include any member they feel is not sufficiently

able-bodied to follow the itinerary. Members are responsible for their own travel insurance.

Buying your ticket: Please produce your membership card together with the correct money. Have

prepared your choice of menu if applicable. Final ticket booking: All tickets must be booked and paid

for on or before the last Thursday coffee morning before the event. Late phone bookings cannot be

accepted. Members are advised to attend the last Thursday before a trip in case there are any last

minute alterations.

Refunds: Cannot be given for either deposits or tickets, unless the organiser is notified in time,

always providing the trip is full and a replacement can be found from the waiting list. Tickets are not
