THE HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME FOR

REFLECTION—especially this year as we

recover from the aftermath of Hurricane

Sandy. As 2012 comes to an end, ushering

in a brand new year of possibilities, we at

THIRTEEN reflect on the indispensable

support from members like you. Your con-

tributions help us to create the programs

of consequence that we present on-air

and online each and every day. So, in

that spirit of holiday reflection, here’s a

look back at some memorable THIRTEEN

moments from 2012—our 50th year on-air.

The year began on a high note with a

second season of Downton Abbey and a

new weekly series from Bill Moyers. Great

Performances brought a diverse line-up

of extraordinary talent from Tony Bennett

to the 75th anniversary of Tanglewood,

while Nature continued its 30th anniver-

sary season with Raccoon Nation and

Cracking the Koala Code.

American Masters had an outstanding

year with a portrait of Johnny Carson

that was enjoyed by more than six mil-

lion viewers. Harvard scholar Henry Louis

Gates, Jr. provided another audience

favorite, Finding Your Roots, which

explored the intersecting genealogy of

notable Americans.

SundayArts became NYC-ARTS and

moved to Thursday nights. The NYC-

ARTS website was expanded and the

team created an award-winning mobile

app. MetroFocus provided New Yorkers

with a consistent source of local news and

insight online and then went on-air with

monthly specials. The MetroFocus news

crew also worked tirelessly during Hur-

ricane Sandy to provide vital information

about the storm’s impact on the region.

When proposed public television fund-

ing cuts took center stage during the first

presidential debate, tens of thousands of

people in the tri-state community spoke

up through THIRTEEN.org to tell us how

much public television means to them.

In September we kicked off our 50th

anniversary with the premiere of Pioneers

of THIRTEEN and a special 50th anniver-

sary website (THIRTEEN.org/50) where

videos of classic THIRTEEN programs

can be accessed. American Graduate

Day, broadcast live from our Tisch WNET

studios at Lincoln Center in September,

engaged the tri-state area and the nation

in a dialogue about keeping kids in school.

Appearances by Bryant Gumbel, Brian

Williams and representatives from orga-

nizations including United Way and Boys

& Girls Clubs of America made for a pow-

erful program that we plan to duplicate

next fall.

As we look ahead to the new year, we

continue to be committed to providing

the exceptional programming and com-

munity service that we began 50 years

ago. Thank you for making it all possible.
