Alternative medicine (Best Of)If you want to live a long time I have some good advice for you. Stay away

from doctors. Before health insurance was invented most people did just fine living on prunes and proverbs. No prescriptions. With this in mind I have collected the following cowboy cures and home remedies.

Stomach Ailments- Cinnamon is said to cure vomiting, baking soda will aid indigestion and the singed hair of a black dog in mother’s milk will cure cramps.

Rheumatism- Mix vinegar and live fire ants in an empty whiskey bottle and apply lavishly to the skin. If this doesn’t work take a swig of the mixture. Drinking vinegar also is said to work for hiccups, only leave the fire ants out.

Toothache- Remove the skin off the frog of a horse’s front foot (it must be a front foot). Char the skin over an open flame and apply it to the tooth.

Rattlesnake Bite- If you get bit by a rattler on an arm or leg, kill a cow and slit open its gut and stick the bitten appendage into the middle of the cow’s guts and leave it there for awhile. This draws the poison out of your system. However, when you consider that a good cow may be worth more than you are, you may want to just try crushing a Texas milkweed plant and applying the milk to the bite. You still might die but your heirs will at least have the live cow to fight over.

Corns- This sounds a little drastic but I was told by my friend Nita Lowry one time about a friend of hers who actually chopped off his toe afflicted with a bad corn with a ball peen hammer and a chisel. If you follow this advice refer to the following treatment.

Gangrene- If you contract gangrene obtain a rubber inner tube and and pack it with fresh cow manure. Wrap the inner tube around the skin as a poultice.

Whooping Cough- Drink mare’s milk.Pneumonia- Apply a poultice to the chest of hot cabbage leaves and vinegar.Frostbite- Hold a sliced potato next to the frozen skin.Black Eye- Apply a big fat juicy beefsteak and pick on somebody your own

size.Hair Loss- Rub the leaves of the sotol plant vigorously on your scalp. It’s a

lot cheaper than Rogaine and any hair that grows will be all natural and organic.Hay Fever- If you are having wheezing fits and don’t have enough air to

blow out a candle put some coffee grounds in a pipe and smoke them. Insect Bite- Hold a chaw of freshly chewed tobacco on the sting area. The

sting of the tobacco will supposedly take your mind off the other sting.External Parasites- This trick comes from watching a fox get rid of fleas.

Put a wood chip in your mouth and slowly walk naked into a lake. As you get deeper in the water the bugs will keep crawling up your body to avoid the water. When only your mouth is above water all the bugs will hop on to the wood chip. Just drop the chip into the water and get out of the lake. Remembering you are naked, of course.

Coma- Bury the foot of a badger under the patient’s bed. Hey, it can’t hurt and it probably works just as good as what they do for you in hospitals. And it’s a LOT cheaper!

Everything Else- Whiskey. It must be strong whiskey, strong enough to kill any germs. You wouldn’t want to just antagonize them now, would you?

These cures are said to work for man or beast. But I don’t recommend this last tetanus cure for humans. The instructions are to drive two dozen nails through a board in three rows so that their sharp points stick out about a half inch. Then lay the board on the horses forehead and hit the board with a hammer. The air holes thus created by the sharp nails are said to relieve the intense heat created by tetanus.

Sometimes don’t you wonder just how these cures were ever invented in the first place?

treAsurer’s rePort There has been a continued decrease in registrations and transfers for 2012. Thankfully we have kept our expenses

down as well. With that said, we need to find other creative ways to generate some cash flow for our organization. One idea that was already carried through was the 35th Anniversary T-shirts that have been on sale. Not only do these promote our breed, but they serve as a fund raiser for our organization. Please consider purchasing these quality shirts.

If you have other financial ideas, please consider joining the 2013 Finance Committee. Diana

Merry Christmas! Hope this finds all of you with plenty of hay in the barn and not too much snow on the ground. For those of you who did not make the National Show in Wisconsin, you missed a great time. Those in the Midwest really know how to get it together. As much as I’ve been talking DNA, some of you are listening. To date, I have 16 animals tested. I am encouraged by what I’ve seen. If you haven’t pulled tail hair yet, please, please do so now and send me the results. We need this info in order to move the breed forward. Speaking of forward, be sure to watch your mail in the coming weeks. Our committees have been hard at work trying to come up with creative ways to get the Association back on track. Would a lifetime membership work for you? Would you like to get your animals and your farm back into the registry? We want to work with you so that you get the most out of your membership. That said, if we can help you, feel free to call or e-mail any of your board members. We’re always willing to talk Pinzgauers. Remember the semen auction will be starting on Jan. 1. We want everyone to participate. Hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season. Lisa

This year the Hall of Fame recipient was, Duane Mick-elsen, D.V.M. from Pullman, WA. Below is an article about Dr. Mickelsen’s history with the breed. He appreci-ates this award and thanks everyone who had a part in it.

I was born June 27, 1936 in Coulee City, Wash. I graduated from Coulee City High School in 1954

and played basketball, football and baseball lettering in all three sports for three years. In fact, sports was my passion and I knew I would never succeed if I went to college so I joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years and was stationed in Naha, Okinawa; Atsugi, Japan and then in Astoria, Oregon. After I came to Astoria I married my high school sweetheart, Gayle, and we have been married for 55 years and have four wonderful children and six grandchildren. After I was discharged from the service we moved back to Coulee City and I farmed wheat and raised Polled Hereford cattle and Poland China hogs for seven years. During this time I decided that maybe I should go to college and become a veteri-narian because we lived a good distance from any vet and often when I would call them they did not want to come out and they would tell me what to do and when I did it and it worked, I felt like “I can do this.” So I drove 110 miles a day a went to a community college while I continued to run the farm. In 1966 I graduated with an Associate in Science degree and was accepted to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washing-ton State University where I graduated in 1970 with a DVM degree. I then practiced medicine at Weiser, Idaho and Wenatchee, Wash. until 1973 when I was offered a position teaching bovine reproduction at my alma mater for 33 years, retiring in 2006. During this time I also got a Master’s of Veterinary Science degree from the University of Idaho in 1978. I continue to do

some beef reproductive work on my own but mostly work with Gayle (fig. 1) maintaining a small farm and home in Pullman, Wash. In 1974 while teaching at WSU, one of my clients was Alvene Leinweber of Colfax who wanted to artificially inseminate his Hereford cattle with another breed of cattle. I had been in Calgary, Alberta learning how to do embryo transfer and while there I visited some bull studs where a lot of exotic bulls were in se-men collection facilities. I saw Fox, Lord, Tyrol and Komet Supreme while there and later saw Wotan at the Denver National Stock Show. So I talked Alvene into breeding his cows to some of these Pinzgauer bulls. The next spring he was excited when he had the half-cross Pinzgauer calves and he went to Canada and bought Judith with Blitz at her side and a heifer named Sonja. Blitz was later named the National Champion bull in 1977 and 1979 and Sonja the Reserve Cham-pion female in 1977. It was then that I started doing some embryo transfers for Alvene, collecting over 50 embryos from Sonja alone. I traded Alvene some of my work for Pinzgauer cattle and that is how I got started in 1978. One female called PPB Lisa was first in class at the 1985 Denver National Western Stock

Show (fig.2) and Grand Champion at the 1986 Pacific International Livestock Exposition. I sold her first two calves, along with several other females, to Robert and Chris Bianchi in California to help establish their herd. In 1990, Lisa had a beautiful heifer calf sired by PBL Jack Attack that was the best cow I ever owned. We named her 4M Jackie (fig. 3) and she won several shows for us over the years as did her offspring. One of my finest moments was in 1995 when Judge Alex Dees picked Jackie and her calf first in a class of 13 cow-calf

new APA members

pairs from all over the United States and Canada. She won the Omar Thompson Cow-Calf award several times over the next several years as well. In the 1980’s and 1990’s I served eight years as APA director from the Northwest and 12 years on the board of the Northwest Pinzgauer Association. During this time I met some of the finest people that I have ever known in the Pinzgauer cattle breed and would like to think that we made a difference. Some of the breeders provided bulls for the USDA Meat Animal Research Station breed data. This data clearly showed that Pinzgauer beef was ever bit as good as Angus, and

better than most other breeds, in flavor and tender-ness. And yet we have a long way to go because Angus have done a better job of promoting their breed. In addition to cattle, I also marketed and sold over 7500 doses of Pinzgauer semen from about fifty bulls to breeders all over the United States and some into Brazil. Many breeders got their herds established from this semen. Over the past twenty-five years I have authored many articles in the Pinzgauer Journal with one of the first being published in the June, 1987 issue of the North American Pinzgauer magazine, as it was called then. I like Pinzgauer because of their beauty and docile nature. When I raised my Herefords – they had problems with foot rot, pink eye and vaginal prolapse. Most of these problems are non-existant in Pinzgauer cattle. In fact, the Hereford breeds problems are what made up my mind that I wanted to be a veterinarian. In the future, I would like to see the Pinzgauer breed promote the breed in areas outside our breed journal so that more people would find out about them. I would also like to see more calving-ease bulls developed because we have had calving problems in a lot of the bulls that we have marketed in the past.

Success! That is the best word we can use to describe the 2012 National Pinzgauer Show, held in Wisconsin in September. From the Show Ring, to the Banquet Supper, to the Silent Auction, to the Meetings......Smiles were on everyone’s faces. What more can you ask for? As much as we would like to look back at our successes of 2012, we need to move ahead to 2013.

The Midwest has a vision of growth for 2013. How are we going to accomplish that? Stay tuned. Our committees are already in full force with that goal in mind.

We are Midwesterners, however, so we have to also have a little playtime. First will be the Badger Kick Off Classic Show November 30-December 2. Next, our winter get together, January 12, complete with good friends, food and hot tubs.

There are so many people to thank that helped make this year great, we don’t want to miss anyone, so with that...thank you....you know who you are! Have a wonderful and safe holiday season, and we will see you all in 2013.

Maison Mathews became a new Junior member when his grandparents Kenny

Mathews and Lori-Lee Moulton, of KLM Farm in North Berwick, Maine, bought him his

first heifer, PRF Sierra from the Haskell's of Pleasent River Farm in Windham, Maine.

Pinzgauer Breeders LTD., were in on the ground floor of importing Pinzgauer cattle into North America which began in earnest in 1971. Dave and Irene Morgan were PBL. They first imported Amigo in 1971 and offered his genetics upon his release from quarantine. For those of us who study our pedigrees with some seriousness, we can find PBL heritage in our animals today. The Morgan’s also imported Gaucho. Gaucho was a bull they sought out because of his non related genetics to so many of the live animals being imported at the time. Dave passed away a few years ago and his wife Irene was laid to rest October 26, 2012. It is with my sincerest sympathies to their family and to recognize the Morgan’s as true Pioneers of the Pinzgauer breed in North America.

The Pinzgauer Journal - December 2012 11

By: DuAne mickelsen, DVmboVine Virus DiArrHeA

Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) virus is a pathogen that can affect cattle in many ways. The virus can cause abortion (fig. 1), mummification (fig. 2), birth defects and maflformations, stillborn full term calves, normal looking calves with immune

deficiencies (persistently infected animals), acute or chronic illness in cattle. The virus is also an indirect cause of many other diseases because it has adverse affects on the immune system. It has been estimated that 80 percent of cattle in the United States have been exposed to BVD and another 80 percent do not show typical signs of disease.

I’ll never forget in my first year of veterinary practice in Southern Idaho, we saw a large number of beef cattle in our practice that would range in the mountains during the summer and come down to the valley in the fall. I saw several cases of BVD related pneumonia and just plain off feed yearlings that had been vaccinated for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) problems. An owner of a 1000 pound steer told me “if you can save this one he is yours”. Needless to say I tried everything I knew to try and save the steer but to no avail. After he died I autopsied the steer and found small ulcers in the esophagus and digestive tract indicative of BVD viral infection. The cattle often show severe diarrhea which is often fatal as in this case but this is just one of the symptoms of infection. In many herds today you won’t find diarrhea but you will often find the virus and so it is one of the first rule outs by a veterinarian when they see sick cattle. Part of the reason it is so elusive and causes so many different syndromes is because there are two types. First, there is a cytopathic strain which infects the cells of the lymph system and kills them and then there is the non-cytopathic strain which

does not kill cells. Then there are two types of each called Type 1 and Type 2. These two type genotypes can both be in the same animal at the same time and they can all change their genetic compositions at various times making them able to cause new forms of disease.

The BVD virus is a common cause of respiratory infection and it also can cause mucosal disease which is a slow degenerative infection like I was treating in the steer above which died. It seems to be able to cause most any type of disease and a big problem is when it infects the fetus before birth (in utero) and may not show any symptoms but be persistently infected (PI) for life. Many respiratory vaccines for BVD may not cause immunity. In fact, in my early days of practice the vaccine was often indicated in causing the infection in cattle. This is not usually the case in modern times.

Some research today has shown that acute mucosal disease starts in utero and results in a persistently infected animal which may mutate within that particular fetus into a different form that then kills the fetus. Research has also shown that BVD virus weakens the animals immune system making them more vulnerable

to other diseases. Even if cattle are not persistently infected (PI) or exposed to BVD virus in utero, they may have an increased susceptibility to respiratory disease (fig. 3). In the PI cattle it is not known whether the virus directly knocks out the immune system itself or changes the way the respiratory tract forms in the fetus making it more susceptible to infection. Some cattle may have lesions in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs causing inflammation of the vessels in acutely infected animals.

In Alberta, Canada they have seen calves slough their feet shortly after the stress of entering the feedlot. Again this may be related to the blood vessel pathology situation seen in the other study. Cattle entering feedlots in Alberta have also seen increased numbers of respiratory disease, decreased production and death.

Diarrhea used to be the major sign seen, however, more commonly now we see the many signs listed above without diarrhea. The thought is that before good vaccines were present

Figure 1

Figure 2

Figure 3

12 The Pinzgauer Journal - December 2012

on the market, diarrhea was the major sign. Today there are many different strains of the virus. For instance, in eastern Canada they see bone marrow abnormalities and cattle that have bleeding disorders but in western Canada respiratory disease is seen more commonly.

Part of the problem is that cattle are transported from one area of the country, to another, more frequently today than in the past causing more strains of the virus to show up in cattle. The only way to prevent this is to keep a closed herd where you don’t bring in any new cattle. This may not be easy to do because we are always wanting to improve our cow herd, or buy a new herd bull.

Semen from infected bulls may contain the virus. Reduced conception rates may occur in otherwise healthy cows that were bred to PI bulls or inseminated with infected semen from PI bulls (fig.4). Also the virus can be shed from one cow to

another when being palpated for pregnancy. Some stockmen are now using a blood test to check for pregnancy to eliminate the need for rectal palpation, unless a separate glove is used between cows.

Persistantly infected (PI) cattle are also at risk for other diseases because the BVD virus in their bodies hinders the immune system. PI calves have a higher incidence of scours and pneumonia and a higher mortality (death) rate. They may fail to grow and not gain weight well.

Diagnosis of BVD virus: To determine if your herd has a problem look at the current pregnancy rates and death loss in the herd. Also whether you have added new cattle to the herd. PI animals are created before birth, when the cow encounters BVD virus between 40 and 120 days of pregnancy. Once a calf is PI it will always be infected. If a calf is not PI at birth it can never become PI. Once an animal has tested negative for BVD it never needs to be tested again for PI status. The key is protecting your pregnant cow herd so no fetuses become exposed.

Cattle can be tested. If BVD virus is present, it can often be isolated from a blood sample or from tissues of an aborted fetus or an infected weak or unthrifty calf. Another diagnostic method is taking a small skin sample from an ear notch sample using a pig-ear notcher. In the first year of testing, all calves,

heifers and bulls and any cows that may have lost a calf, should be tested before the next breeding season.

There are several killed and modified live vaccines (MLV) containing many strains of the BVD virus. It is best to use two MLV vaccinations before the animal is old enough to breed, to gain proper immunity. The cow can be immune to BVD and the fetus can still sometimes be infected, especially in early pregnancy. Annual fall vaccination with killed products will also not correct the problem that may have already occurred. The best protection against BVD is to eliminate all sources of infection, vaccinate with a MLV vaccine ahead of breeding or a oil-based killed vaccine during pregnancy, and never let cattle become exposed to infected animals. Even though I loved to show my cattle it was always dangerous as far as bringing new diseases, such as BVD, into the herd. Without testing, it may take three years of vaccinating and culling by removing cows that are late breeders, or produce unthrifty calves, to rid a herd of BVD. Figure 4

Midwest Semen Auction to start Jan 1, 2013. Watch Web for Details!!

A Kansas State University study used a computer simulation model to compare costs of natural service breeding with several synchronization of estrus and artificial insemination systems (AI). The study also aimed to identify important factors in determining the differences in expected economic returns between systems.

The researchers modeled three herd sizes (30, 100 and 300 head), three cow-to-bull rations (20,30 and 40), and seven estrus synchronization and AI protocols (3 heat detection only systems, two combination heat detection and cleanup timed AI systems, and two fixed-time AI systems).

In each of these models, the breeding season consisted of one synchronization and AI period, followed by a natural-service period. Breeding cost per pregnancy ranged from $46 to $95 and largely reflected the difference in synchronization product inputs.

Averaged across the three herd sizes and three cow-to-bull ratios, the AI systems were economically preferred over natural service 33 % to 49% of the time.

Heat detection and clean up fixed time AI synchronization systems, strict fixed-time AI systems, and heat detection only systems were favored over natural service 33%, 41% and 49% of the time, respectively.

This data illustrates that heat detection only systems were most likely to have lower costs than natural service. These simulation models also showed that as herd size increased, AI was more likely to have lower costs than natural service. It was reported that heat detection only systems in large herds (300 cows) using low cow-to-bull ratios (20) demonstrated a net economic advantage relative to natural service 85% of the time.

Whereas, the proportion of times AI was less costly than natural service was less than 5% for herd sizes of 30 and cow-to-bull ratios of 40 regardless of the synchronization system. In addition, the models showed that the AI systems were more cost effective at lower cow-to-bull ratios. The frequency of lower breeding costs for AI than natural service for cow-to-bull ratios of 20, 30, and 40 was 63%, 46% and 14%, respectively.

These simulation models showed that genetic value premiums and semen cost were consistently included in the top three factors that determined expected economic difference between natural service and AI systems across herd sizes and cow-to-bull ratios.

The increased value of the AI sired calves based on genetic strengths of AI sires and semen costs were the most important variables at higher cow-to-bull ratios and larger herd sizes.

The most important factor when the cow-to-bull ratio was low was the variability in bull purchase price. Higher bull purchases prices resulted in AI systems becoming more economically competitive because as the bull price increased the cost of natural service increased.

In summary, these researchers concluded that estrus synchronization and AI were economically advantageous compared with natural service when a sufficient genetic value premium could be obtained from AI sired calves.

Mmmmm…..did everyone understand all that analysis? Some reading this will completely understand this and have a question or two and others will be bug-eyed and wonder what in the world they are getting at, usually the two schools of thought when one studies

an research study. As I went through this, I have only one question: the cost of

semen of was not addressed, while the purchase price of a bull was addressed. It would be my belief that $50 a unit semen would not alter the results much in regards to $25 per unit (or less) semen. But I cannot be sure of this point.

After being a dairyman for twenty years, the constant drum beat is: bulls are bad, bulls are dangerous, and bulls cost way more money than AI. Of course, for the most part those saying this are AI organizations and Land Grant Universities. Needless to say, when I raised my first Pinzgauer bull and turned him out (I had sold numerous Red Holstein Bulls to producers for many years and only established fertility by pen mating, they were never out of their pen—BUT, a Holstein Bull clearly is not a Pinzgauer and that is a topic for perhaps another article) Having heard all of this, I can list literally thousands of dairymen who culled thousands of cows because they could NOT get them bred AI—I am one of those. So what is the right thing? Or correct thing?

Here is how I interpret this study. If you want to make strides in your herd genetically speaking (by strides I mean leaps and bounds, never forget, bovine generations are somewhat longer than say rabbits…) you will breed as much as possible AI and utilize a bull for cleaning up those cattle that you just could not settle AI. If you do not care about trying to produce a superior female or male with each calving cycle, then use the ole bull, and use him time and time again.

To me there is nothing more satisfying, if your thing is genetics and animal husbandry and you have dedicated yourself to the attempt to be considered by anyone as perhaps a master breeder, to start a new calving season and have calves hitting the ground by two, three, four, five or more bulls. Follow that up by having potential buyers visit your facility and see numerous calves sired by numerous bulls. While I might admit, this was somewhat easier as a dairyman, through hard work, time, and money invested, I can now play the same game as a Pinzaguer breeder that I did as a Red Holstein producer. I had the same problem wanting to breed Red Holsteins….half a dozen bulls to choose from…until I went on the hunt and suddenly had 30-50 non related Red bulls in my tank. If you are truly dedicated to the end result, there is no reason any of us cannot benefit from utilizing AI in our operations. Yes, you might have to buy a tank. Yes, you will need to keep the tank charged. Yes, you will need to seek out and purchase semen.

Here is the bottom line from where I sit. First, when you see that Heartland Maquire bull standing in your barn, or that FTF Gabby heifer, or that PPB Holz cow in the field, or your Awesome Saber influenced Ms. Woodie Talbot based seedstock…and when you look at them you grin from ear to ear. Second, when your fellow breeders see them, or a beef judge sees them on your farm and their reaction is Holy Cow! That tells me I am on the right track. For me I care not if I ever sell one of my animals. I will spend whatever money I can to pursue breeding the best. Because here is a little thought of fact: it takes the same amount of money to feed a superior animal that it takes to feed a lack luster animal.

The Junior GazetteHello everyone,I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather we had during

World Beef Expo this year. Having such great weather really helped with all those who traveled any distance to get there. I would like to thank everyone that was part of making this show possible, and everyone who participated in the show. We had a great time meeting some new faces, along with the familiar faces. I would also like to thank all of the people who either purchased or bid on any of the auction items. The money all went to wither scholarships or to pay the National Show. Thank you again to everyone who helped make this year’s National Pinzgauer Show possible.

This year we had twelve juniors participate in the National Pinzgauer show. These juniors are as listed: Kylee Beckius, Emma Leis, Pearl Franke, Lauryn Hacker, Iliana Hunsberger, Mark Leis, Brady Calaway, Brooke Calaway, Nick Curtin, Jill Foshee, Gloria Kesler, and Stephanie Page. The junior show is not possible without each of you, continue showing and do your best at helping others. I would also like to give a big thank you to the 2012 Midwest Junior Pinzgauer Royalty. They did amazing job at representing our breed during the supreme drive on Saturday night at World Beef Expo. The royalty are as follows: Queen- Brooke Calaway, Princesses- Jill Foshee, Pearl Franke, and Stephanie Page. We each got to walk in one of the champions from the Pinzgauer open show. Congratulations to Jerry at Woodhaven Farm with the champion heifer and cow calf pair. Also congratulations to Fairchild Pinzgauer Farm with the champion bull. They all looked amazing, especially Regan

(the champion bull) after the royalty surprised him with a can of spray glitter.

Throughout the summer the Midwest juniors showed at many county fairs. While the Northern Wisconsin juniors were showing at Calumet County fair on Labor Day, the Southwest had many fairs that they were going to participate in. Hillsboro Fair was a fun fair for the juniors. Nick Curtin, Mark Leis, Emma Leis, Samantha Kerian, Ben Kerian, and Stephanie Page all participated in the fair. Then it was time for Richland County Fair, where Nick Curtain and Pearl Franke participated, and after the Richland County Fair Mark and Emma Leis participated at the Vernon County Fair.

As 2012 comes to an end we welcome the snow and bitter cold days. However, don’t forget we still get to show all together before the year ends. Don’t forget to send in your entry forms for Badger Kickoff Classic. Badger Kickoff Classic will take place in Milwaukee December 1st and 2nd. This is a fun show for the younger juniors to watch and learn from the older juniors. I hope to see you there.

Also as the New Year arrives, we can look forward to the Midwest winter get together in January. This event is always one of my favorites. It is fun to get to together with old friends, relax, and eat all the good food everyone brings.

2012 scHolArsHiP reciPientHi y’all! I am Cheyenne Hooks and I have received the American

Pinzgauer Association Scholarship this year. I currently attend Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. I am majoring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Food/Animal Production. I have been showing Pinzgauer cattle for nine years and I have enjoyed showing this breed immensely. I have learned so much from the people that belong to this association. Thanks to Dennis and Pam Bryant for helping me get my show string ready when I first started out and any time that I needed help. I also want to thank Mary Ann and Ken Meredith for all that the have done for me. One of the people that have done the most for me, is Johnny McNutt. Johnny has gone to almost every show that I have shown in and always helps me when I need it. I consider him a grandfather. Also, I want to thank my father, Craig Hooks, for teaching me all that he knows about the breed and teaching me what a quality show heifer and bull should look like. I plan to expand my herd when I graduate from college and attend more shows. I look forward to what lies ahead.

The Pinzgauer Journal - December 2012 15

The National Show and Silent Auction are now in the record books. Speaking for many, just not myself the entire time spent in Milwaukee was more than I could have expected. Meeting other breeders for a first time in person, seeing their cattle, discussing the breed, their perspectives and just plain getting to know them was a hoot! It was a great four days.

Work on the silent auction began many months ago with 130 invitations going out by mail and numerous emails hitting the electronic air ways seeking Lifetime and longtime Pinzgauer breeders support via donations of any and everything historical dealing with the greatest breed on this planet. It was my privilege to chair the committee and it simply was a labor of love. Getting to know again, many Pinzgauer folks for a first time was insightful and more than worth the price of admission as some would say.

I began getting calls and emails a few weeks after everything hit the airwaves. Items had already begun to reach my home from those contacted initially with the concept for the auction. Those who followed the items on the two web sites, and for those who participated in the auction either via phone, email or in person can attest: the items available covered the entire spectrum. Semen from foundation bulls, Grand Champion bulls, and newly collected bulls, Grand Champion and Reserve Champion bells, Pinzgauer items which many people did not know even existed (which includes myself), new hand crafted items donated specifically for this auction: well, to me it was simply inspiring. In honesty, when one is a collector, you can never be sure others will share your interest to the same degree. I was hopeful the auction was on the right tract Thursday when we put most of the items on display. Producers from

other breeds mingled by our displays throughout the day and the recurrent comment I hear was: “look at all this cool old Pinzgauer stuff --- we should have an auction with items like this representing our breed.”

While I have been Johnny on the Spot getting almost all of the personal thank you letters in the mail, again, my heartfelt thanks to all Lifetime members, past members and current members for their extremely generous support. It goes without saying a monumental Thank You to all who bid and purchased items. Items went to all parts of the country and one item was sent out this week to a German bidder. It was also gratifying to see Pinzgauer youth in attendance, bidding, buying and giving some of the adults a run for their money. I would also like to thank Diana and Adam for donating their purchases back to be auctioned off again.

Proceeds (according to what I was told) more than doubled from 2011 which made this a great success. Money went into the APA Scholarship Fund, the Midwest Youth now has their Scholarship Fund in place for the next two years and the remainder paid for the expenses of the Midwest Association to host the show. One for the record books, thanks a million!

One last thank you to our generous donars: Betty Bradshaw, Kathy Dombroski, 4M Pinzgauers, Circle S Stock Farms, Woodhaven, Woodie Larsen, Paul Swisher, Twin Brooks Farm, JD Cal Farm, Bob and Sheri Schmidt, Circle P Pinzgauers, Lazy W Farms, Red-Hill Dairy, Kesler Family Farm, Fairchild Family Pinzgauers, Kevin and Diane Leis---I sincerely hope I have not missed anyone. And last, thank you to each and every bidder and buyer. The success is to be attributed to all who took part.
