Message from the President

Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday I was writing the article

for the month of November. As time flies by remember to seize the day and make the most of each opportunity. Speaking of time, I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season and had the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. I had the blessing

of having my parents come to visit from sunny Florida to celebrate Thanksgiving as well as my 34th birthday. We had a great time making memories together and, of course, we ate way too much.

Looking forward to the December Forum, we will be having a panel of representatives from several service organizations. They will be sharing with us their mission and focus as well as the avenues that they provide for us to SERVE our community. Having been part of several service organizations over the past five years, I must say that I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve, network, fellowship, and support our community through them.

If you’re not a member of a service organization, I strongly encourage you to find one that has a mission you can stand behind and then get involved. Giving of your time and talent is very rewarding.

Also, at the upcoming Forum you will notice some slight changes. Besides the lack of white hair on your Chamber president’s head, we will be having a service member from one of our five military service branches lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thereafter, we will have clergy from our community lead us in an invocation. We will also be replacing our Kidwiler Membership spotlight with a “Membership Recruitment” and “THINK CHAMBER FIRST” spotlight. This will be in-line with our focus this year and beyond of growing our

membership base as well as thinking Chamber first when we spend our dollars in our local economy. Doing this benefits us all. If you have helped to recruit a new member to the Chamber or have thought Chamber first this past year, we want to put YOU, and the business you either recruited or have done business with, in the spotlight at our Forum. Please contact the Chamber at (360) 491-4141 and either Sceni or Amanda will gladly take the information from you.

Our board of directors will be meeting on December 20 for our annual board advance. We will be revisiting our mission statement and core values, as well as creating ways to add more value to your Chamber membership. As we approach the end of 2011, many things have been accomplished this

year, as I recapped last month. I am looking forward to 2012 and those things yet to achieve in order to continue my pledge to bring value to your membership and develop the culture of Think Chamber First. I have heard many stories about changes our members have made in their shopping and buying

decisions already and they warm my heart. I know as we continue growing in our commitment to shop each other first, there will be more success stories in the future.

Our focus on growth is gaining momentum. With a number of new businesses and returning members, our membership has grown by 15-20 in the month of November. This is a great opportunity for you to place new people in your sphere of influence and develop more productive relationships. Much of this growth has come as a result of referrals from you, our members. Your help in growing the Chamber is key to our continued success and I thank you for your commitment to our future.

It’s nearly time for the Community Resource Guide, and I know you are looking forward to participating again in this great publication. We are expanding the value by increasing your choices and price points to promote your business in the Guide. Information will be coming to you in late December about these opportunities.

Another great and fun way to promote your business is in the Thrive. There has been a new addition since August called Hmmm…Didn’t Know That! We are constantly on the lookout for fun facts, trivia, or other tidbits that set your business apart from

others. If your business is on the cutting edge of something, sells more of anything, was ranked as the top of a category, or anything that sets you apart, submit that information to the Chamber office by the 15th of the month.

Holiday time is here and it seems like the years are going faster and faster. Employment Security Extends Program to Beat Back LayoffsBy Paul Trause, Employment Security Commissioner

With the economy stuck in neutral, many Washington business owners are adjusting

their economic outlook and beginning to consider the possibility of another recession.

This will force some companies to consider employee layoffs as a possible solution but it doesn’t have to.

Thousands of businesses in Washington have avoided layoffs during these tough economic times through the Employment Security Department’s Shared-Work Program. In the last two years alone, we estimate the program saved more than 50,000 jobs and more than $100 million in unemployment benefit payments.

The program is quite simple. Employers temporarily reduce the work hours of their full-time employees by up to 50 percent, and the workers collect partial unemployment benefits to replace a portion of their lost wages.

Over the past few months, I have traveled across the state visiting with businesses to learn how the program is working. I also want participating businesses to know that we are extending Shared-Work plans beyond the usual two-year window to help keep

businesses afloat. Previously, a company could be on Shared Work for only two years before having to take a year off.

During my tour, I have seen firsthand how the Shared-Work Program is making a difference. In Spokane, I learned how EZ Adjustable Boat Trailers is using the program to reduce its payroll costs by 20 to 30 percent and still maintain its skilled workforce.

In another case, the Center for Pediatrics in Kennewick is managing recent cuts in Medicaid reimbursements by having all employees work reduced hours until the company is able to expand its customer base.

And in Wenatchee, Papé Machinery was relieved to learn that the company could now apply for a third year of Shared-Work coverage due to the worsening economy.

No matter what area of the state, I have heard over and over again how grateful employers and employees are to have Shared Work as an alternative to layoffs.

Here in Washington, about 2,200 businesses and nearly 25,000 employees are currently approved to participate in the program. That’s down from 3,500 businesses and 51,000 employees during the peak of the recession in 2010—and probably a fraction of the businesses that would benefit from this program.

If your company is considering layoffs or nearing the end of its second Shared-Work plan year, call Employment Security at 800-752-2500 or send an email to the Shared-Work Unit. You might be able to prevent a costly layoff.

If you own or work for a business that uses Microsoft software, here’s a deal that you can’t beat. The Washington State Employment Security Department has extended its

contract with Microsoft to make the company’s entire suite of online courses available for free to Washington residents through October 2012.

The offer is open to anyone of working age—both the employed and unemployed. Employment Security Commissioner Paul Trause said the free e-learning is part of the department’s efforts to help improve the computers skills of Washington’s work force.

“Many people are familiar with Microsoft products, but few are truly expert on even one of the software programs—let alone three or four of them,” said Paul Trause. The free courses are a great way to improve the computer skills of one employee—or even hundreds of employees.

The Microsoft e-learning library includes hundreds of courses covering every software program produced by the company since 2002.

Mike Babauta has been hired to fill the posi-tion of Olympia Boys & Girls Club Branch Director. Mike has been serving as the interim director for the last two months and was for-

merly the Lacey Boys & Girls Club Program Director—having served in that position for approximately three years. He came to Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County with a great deal of experience, having previously worked for several other youth serving agencies. Mike holds a Bachelor’s Degree from West-ern Washington University. His leadership, experience and skill all make him an exceptional choice for Branch Director for the Olympia Club.

Tis the season to give back to those who deserve it the most, specifically our

soldiers and airmen of Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) and Camp Murray. November was indeed a very busy month while we made plans to give the 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team’s (SBCT) leadership a proper send off for their upcoming deployment. We also spread goodwill on

During the evening of November 16, the Captain Meriwether Lewis Lacey Subchapter hosted the 3-2 SBCT Leadership gathering at the Thurston County Fair Grounds. The Lacey Chamber, City of Lacey, and North Thurston Public Schools also helped plan the event. Approximately 200 people were in attendance, including the Mayor of Lacey, City Council Members, and the 3-2 SBCT leadership. Denise Burditus, the Lacey Subchapter president and Heritage Bank vice president, presided and it ended with a birthday celebration for Col. Chuck Webster and Command Sergeant Major Sam Murphy. In addition, special thanks to the evening’s sponsors: Heritage Bank, Harborstone Credit Union, Costco, and the Lacey Subchapter.

Murray. The turkeys were provided by the different subchapters of AUSA, Old Cannery Furniture Store, the Air Force Association, Harborstone Credit Union, and many other individual donors. For those who donated, thank you very much for your generosity. Next, we’ll continue down the road to collect donations for Operation Ham Grenade to support military families during the Christmas holiday season.

Overall, it has been a very busy holiday season. If any of you are interested in becoming more involved with the military, please feel free to contact me at carlene.joseph@harborstone.com. We’re already planning a welcome home celebration for the 3-2 SBCT even though their return is planned for twelve months away, so we need your help to raise $50,000.
