If you missed the Floral Park video that was shown at theSeptember General Meeting, you can view it online athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm8-sCHscU8. The videois a compilation of old photos and footage of Floral Park inthe 30s and 40s. Thank you to Kim Sinclair and Doug Krausfor their work on this project.

Thank you for the honor to serve you asyour Floral Park Neighborhood Association(FPNA) president.

Election night was such a popular meet-ing. It was an evening where neighbors whohave lived in Floral Park for 40 years wel-comed a bevy of new residents.

As we enter 2012, the newly electedboard has several key projects under consideration.

Now that we are officially a 501(c)3 non-profit, the boardretained Guzman & Gray, a CPA firm specializing in non-profits,to outline some of the non-profit best practices for accountingand board procedures that we will be adopting for 2012.

Looking back on the year past, although the economic cli-mate around us has been challenging, the neighborhood associa-tion was successful in several areas:

Once again, we had a profitable Home and Garden Tourthat funded scholarships for SAUSD and Santa AnaCollege and also enabled contributions to over eight non-profit organizations in the Santa Ana community.

The vintage streetlights are scheduled for 2012 energy-efficient retrofitting. We are pleased to have worked withthe city to achieve a soft warm glow similar to what yousee today instead of the harsh bright orange glow of thepast.

The 10-year re-forestation program that is funded by theFPNA in conjunction with the City continues to thrivewith over 50 trees being planted this month throughoutFloral Park.

On the horizon, we are doing due diligence on projectsthat will help mitigate the increased traffic in our neighbor-hood and another that will enhance the three main entry-ways into the neighborhood (Santa Clara/Broadway,19th/Broadway, Flower/17th).

As the board transitions, we would like to thank KimSinclair, an active volunteer for our neighborhood. Kim has repre-sented our ward as a City of Santa Ana Planning Commissionerand representative on the City of Santa Ana Environmental &Transportation Advisory Committee. Kim has been a past presi-dent of the FPNA, serving on the board a total of four years, most recently in 2011. This past year Kim helped champion thepermit parking and traffic committee.

Also in the transition, John Schulte retired from the boardthis year after 11 years of service to the FPNA. John was presi-dent for four of those years. John and Linda championed the 2005Neighborhood of the Year award by the NUSA (NeighborhoodsUSA).

In addition, Erwin Schauwecker retired from serving as theFPNA treasurer for ten years. We will miss his great attention todetail and commend the transition from a checkbook toQuickBooks.

On behalf of the neighborhood, we thank each of them forall the dedicated hours of volunteering to improve our neighbor-hood and community.

We welcome to the FPNA Board the following new mem-bers for 2012: Treasurer - Linda Nelessen; Social Co-Directors -Jamie Simon & Cassie Shine; Membership Co-Directors - JessicaCarr & Joy Ridout; and Parliamentarian - Blake Anderson.

I would like to thank all of our neighbors for their continuedsupport of our neighborhood association through membershipcontributions or volunteering on a committee or working at oneof our many events. Our neighbors and our neighborhood are thekey reasons why we board members are honored to serve.

HELPING FOR THE HOLIDAYSThanks to the success of the 2011 Home & Garden Tour,

the FPNA was able to extend $5,000 in scholarships to studentsfrom Santa Ana high schools and Santa Ana College earlier thisyear. Additionally, the FPNA contributed another $4,000 in chari-table donations to local organizations doing good works, includingF.A.C.E.S., Southwest Community Center, WISEPlace, Taller SanJose, Latino Health Access and Santiago Elementary School.

We were also recently pleased to discover from the finalHome Tour accounting that we had another $1,050 available forcharitable donations! With the approval of the general member-ship, we plan to donate $500 of this to The Wooden Floor (for-merly St. Joseph Ballet) and $550 to the Orange County RescueMission.

To continue the spirit of giving to others, the SponsorshipCommittee is organizing an additional community outreach tohelp over the holidays. This holiday season, the FPNA is solicit-ing donations to WISEPlace, which will be collected and distrib-uted prior to Christmas. “WISEPlace is a community of housingand hope for women in crisis. WISEPlace offers housing and sup-port services for homeless women who are committed to chang-ing their lives. Calling all Watchdogs: The OrangeCounty Grand Jury wants you!

by Helen Alberts (Floral Park Resident and Member of the 2011-12 OC Grand Jury)

A thorn in the side of the body of politics? Afflicting thecomfortable and comforting the afflicted?

We tend to think of the OC Grand Jury as a bully pulpit ofthe people, by the people, for the people. Just a bunch of regularJoes and Janes who devote a year to putting local governmentunder the microscope, determining what’s amiss, and then suggest-ing ways to fix it.

Sometimes, it can cause great waves -- such as the last grandjury’s critical examination of executive compensation at local citiesand special districts.

What could be more fun that that? Sure, the pay sort ofstinks - $250 a week, max - but folks do it as a form of publicservice.

The grand jury’s recruitment drive for the 2012-2013 sessionkicked off October 1. Applications must be submitted by Friday,January 13. (Obviously they are not superstitious.)

Applicants must be at least 18, U.S. Citizens, residents ofOrange County for at least one year, able to communicate inEnglish, “and of sound judgment and character.”

“The civil or ‘watchdog’ responsibilities of the grand juryinclude the examination of all aspects of county government, including special districts, to ensure the county monies are beinghandled appropriately,” as stated on www.ocgrandjury.org.“During its term, the grand jury may select the government affairswhich it wishes to investigate. These investigations are conductedby grand jury committees in cooperation with the departments andagencies of the county. Committees may ask for support andadvice from Superior Court, District Attorney’s office, CountyCounsel or outside consultants.”

At the end of the year, the grand jury presents its reports, which local governments must respond to formally, and which weOrange County residents devour with great gusto. They considercomplaints and tips from citizen-types and can propose pursuing aline of investigation.

Interested? Visit the grand jury website at www.ocgrand-jury.org or call the hotline at 714-834-6747 to request an applica-tion packet.

As we approach the end of the year, asevery year, I begin to turn my attention tothe annual Floral Park Home and GardenTour. Believe it or not, this upcoming versionwill be our 20th concoction. I simply cannotfathom that it has been that long.

And, of course, this brings to mindhow much we’ve accomplished in that time.Perhaps in the summer when we’ve got a fullaccounting of our two decades of tours, I’llgive you a more formal recap, but let’s justsay for now that the intangibles have been

priceless.

There is no doubt that the Tour is the single event of theyear, among the many outstanding activities we have, that bringsour community together for two full days of enrichment. It wasperhaps the activity that helped us most win 2005 Neighborhoodof the Year from Neighborhood USA. We have a lot to be proudof.

So, since this is the 20th coming up, we want to make itas special as possible. Our dates are set for the last weekend inApril, the 28th and 29th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as usual. And, asa reminder, this year we’ll be in the north part of Floral Park, from Santa Clara and up to Riverside.

Of course the Tour is only as successful as are our vol-unteers and that volunteering begins with neighbors who offer uptheir homes and gardens for display. As of this writing, we haveonly two houses and one garden lined up. So, we’re in great needof help at this point. Won’t you be the one to come forward? While we try to line up houses and gardens early, we’ve had somefolks back out because of other commitments.WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Trust me, you don’t want me goingdoor to door in January!

While I’m kidding there, I do want toemphasize how much enjoyment our volun-teers get from making significant contributionsto the Tour, regardless of whether they volun-teer their home or garden.

In recognition of the good work that somany people do to help us, we sponsored afirst-time event in October, a docent breakfastthat was a fantastic great success. Over 70 peo-ple gathered as our local Santa Ana firefighters(representing the Santa Ana Firemen’sAssociation) cooked a pancake breakfast. It wasa great time to thank docents who have been so loyal for 5, 10and 15 years. The response was heartwarming and exciting. Also, Iparticularly enjoyed seeing our “quasi” Floral Park flag hanginghigh from the fire truck ladder! (See story on page 1.)

Sandy DeAngelisHome & Garden Tour

Director

Home Tourby Sandy DeAngelis

I want to especially thank the great team that puts the Tourtogether, particularly Nicki Curran, who organizes the docents

each year. I’m not sure how we’d pull the eventoff without her arduous work. And, of course, there are our indefatigable publicity expertLinda Schulte; designer extraordinaire LeaPascoe; vendor supervisor and general sidekickSusan Hart; community services coordinatorJohn Schulte; telephone queen Jane Martinez;advertising chief Nancy St. Jacques; the alwaysreliable boss of the set-up and take-down crewBoe Boezinger, classic car wizard JohnRichmond, and Tom Pataca without whosetenacious efforts we would never be legallyclosing our beautiful streets.

Finally, let’s all remember that this isalso the event that funds so much of our char-ity work. We provide five separate $1,000scholarships each year, support for other chari-

table organizations, and support neighborhood beautification projects.

So, let’s make the 20th the best. Join us in all the fun.

It’s All In A Day’s Walk ...by Jessica Carr

Karyn Cripps and her dog Remington (better known as“Remi”) have a quiet intensity that makes them the perfect candi-dates for my next story. Everyone has a story, and you can learna lot about yourself and your neighbor just by listening. Andafter getting to know Karyn and Remington, it’s clear to me thatthe destination may not be as important as the journey.

I first met Karyn when she was walking her cute brownpup, Remi who is a RhodesianRidgeback/Lab/Pitbull/ Boxer mix.Now that is a high energy combo, yetRemi is as quiet as can be and very, verycalm. Remi came from the pound whenshe was six months old and was from alitter of abused pups. Karyn was smit-ten with Remi from the moment she sawher and shortly after the first meeting, she came back with her husband Jimand took Remi to her forever home.

So one day Joy and I were walkingthe dogs and we saw Karyn and Remi.Karyn waved us over and she was grin-ning from ear to ear! Remi, of course, was acting as casual as ever. Karyn hadexciting news! “Remi is a print modelnow,” exclaimed Karyn proudly. Huh?Then Karyn explained. Recently afriend and neighbor had asked if hecould use the Cripps’ ultra pimped-outvintage garage to shoot photos of hisstreet rod for a magazine. (You knowtheir house. It’s a Spanish style home onRiverside Drive that was on the Home Tour in 2006 and 2010.)During that photo shoot the model asked if she could get someother shots of herself for a magazine called Retro Lovely, a pin-up model magazine where the models can showcase their talent.

Remi, in her Remi way, was just sitting and watching themadness, not making a sound or getting in the way. As themodel was getting ready, she discovered Remi’s porch (which is acool little shed in the backyard) and asked if could get someshots there. She forgot one thing … to ask Remi! I mean it’sher porch and she lets you know it! Just as they were gettingstarted, Remi casually walked up on the porch and sat down.Karyn called her down but next thing she knew, Remi was rightback up there and would not budge. The model decided to justgo with it and work Remi into the shots. Who knew that Remiwould be such a pro??? Apparently she behaved as if she hadbeen doing this all her life and knew just the right look to givethe camera and the model!!

The photos were amazing and now the Cripps have an awe-some moment in time captured with their beloved Remi.

Where do I start with Karyn’s story? Joy and I started play-ing Bunco with some gals from the ‘hood and that’s when I real-ly got to know Karyn … or so I thought. She is calm andassertive and most definitely our leader. It took about a year andmany bottles of wine later when Karyn burst out one of the

most unexpected, funniest stories I haveheard.

One day shortly after Jim andKaryn were married in 1966, Jim camehome and said, “I just quit my job, solet’s go bum around Europe for awhile.”Cool, huh? But here’s the twist. Theyhad a 16 month old baby!!! Three weeksafter that announcement they took all oftheir money and most of their belong-ings and found themselves in Europetraveling in a VW Camper. They justlived life and kept going until the moneyran out, which was about five monthslater. Karyn regaled us with stories oftheir trials and tribulations … and oneparticularly funny story that involved afield in Spain and the farmer that ownedthat field and one, sadly, that I cannotshare here.

Money was dwindling and theyknew the adventure was about to end.

Reality set in. They needed to get home.In order to get back to England for their flight to the US, theyhad to start hocking everything they owned (and I mean every-thing). They made it back with little to nothing and eventuallysettled here in Floral Park.

To this day Karyn and Jim still travel the open road. Thelast trip was in a fully restored 1950 Pontiac on a 3,700-mile driveto Cody, Wyoming. They made that trip in 17 days accompany-ing by nine other restored vehicles.

We live in an amazing neighborhood, and we have all kindsof stories and interesting people around us. So get out there andwalk your dog, take a stroll, and talk to your neighbor. Youmight have more in common with them then you think. I amfortunate to have met Karyn, Jim and Remi. I think it’s time totear a page out of their book and stop worrying about stupidthings. Just enjoy the journey and have fun!!

It is our first home together and we love it very much. We feel so lucky to have ourfirst home be in such a beautiful and festive neighborhood and we are enjoying tending to our home as newlyweds! After our cer-emony in Fountain Valley, we took pictures in and around the grounds at Bowers Museum (where I work) and we made a spe-cial stop with our wedding photographer at the Floral Park monument. Even pets need a special treat during the holidays. Here are a fewideas to try.

PINECONE SPECIAL - Bird Toy (can be used for birds of all sizes)Here are the things you will need:

1 PineconePure honeySeedsYarn

Directions:Take pinecone and wash it off with water to take off any dirt thatmay be lurking around on it. Take the honey and coat thepinecone all over (medium layer of honey). Take the pineconeand roll it all around in the seeds until it is covered. Take the yarnand tie it around near the top of the pinecone enough to hangfrom the cage.Voila! Your Pinecone Special! It is almost like the honey sticks atthe store only with this recipe the birds can play with the wholething. Eat the seeds, honey and break off pieces of the pinecone. The pinecone is like a toy in the middle. And honey is okay forbirds to eat.

PUMPKINS CAN BE USED AS A FOOD SUPPLEMENTFOR VARIOUS ANIMALSMost animals can eat pumpkins, but they should only be fed a lim-ited amount. Smaller animals especially, such as dogs, may experi-ence loose bowels as a result of eating too much pumpkin. Inmoderation and when served properly, house pets can eat pump-kin. Animals in the wild frequently eat raw pumpkins, much to theannoyance of farmers everywhere. Though not technically neces-sary to any animal’s diet, you can use pumpkins for food for ani-mals.Difficulty: Moderately Easy Items you’ll need:

PumpkinsKitchen knifePot

Directions:Boil a pot of water. Slice pieces of raw pumpkin. Remove allpumpkin seeds. Most house pets, such as dogs, are not able todigest pumpkin seeds comfortably. Boil the pieces of raw pump-kin until they are tender but not falling apart. Serve a smallamount of pumpkin to your dog or other house pet.TIPS & WARNINGSPumpkin is an appropriate food for dogs and other animals thatexperience frequent constipation. Replace one-third of your dog’sregular canned food with cooked pumpkin. Don’t serve yourhouse pet pumpkin in the afternoon or evening, as they may needto use the bathroom in the middle of the night and you couldwake up to a mess. Instead, only give your house pet pumpkin inthe morning.

Dog Owner Etiquette

Neighbor Gene Tidgewell reports that since the change todaylight savings time the sidewalk unscooped dog poop “hasincreased 200%.”

The Animal Humane Society encourages dog owners to“Scoop your poop! No excuses: few things sour dog-to-human relations morethan poop left where others can step in it. Bring an excess of bags on eachwalk to be sure you have enough. If you run out of bags, either come backand clean it up or ask another walker if they have a bag to spare. Cleaningup every time will set a good example for others and promote an image of dogowners as caring, responsible citizens…a good thing all around!” (www.ani-malhumanesociety.org/training/library/etiquette-dog-owners)

If you are one of the many Floral Park neighbors who enjoywalking your dog in the neighborhood, please be courteous toyour neighbors and clean up after your pet. Thank you!

TheirPortuguese Soup is out of this world, as is their spicy mac andcheese. Their prices are amazingly affordable, considering the sizeof the portions, and they serve beer and wine. They even have apatio which is perfect for dining at this time of year. They alsoserve a wonderful Sunday Brunch.

Taking a Break ...

After much thought and contemplation, I have made the decision to take a year off from involvement in the Board of Directorsof the Floral Park Neighborhood Association.

I still recall my first general meeting in November, 2000, when as a new neighbor, I raised my hand and volunteered for theposition of membership director, as there were no nominees. That led to 11 consecutive years of service on the Board: twice asmembership director, five times as parliamentarian, and four terms as president. It has been an honor and a privilege to represent theneighborhood, and to work on behalf of all of you who have chosen as your home this wonderful place we call Floral Park.

During my tenure, I have had the opportunity to get to know so many of you as neighbors and friends. And I was particularlypleased to have the opportunity, along with my wife Linda, to representthe neighborhood in the national competition in 2005 thatlead Floral park to be recognized as the Neighborhood of the Year in the entire country.

I am very pleased that several neighbors, new and older, have stepped up this year to take leadership roles in 2012. I wish all ofthem, along with the returning incumbents, great luck in guiding the neighborhood in the coming year, and I encourage other neigh-bors to follow the lead of the newest leaders to rise to the occasion in the future in service of the FPNA.

In the meantime, I look forward to continuing to see so many of you at our neighborhood events and general meetings. This isnot the end of my efforts to support the neighborhood in leadership, only a brief respite before carrying on.

Warm regards,John

Out and About...In my last installment, I promised

you an insight into Barcelona andSpanish/Catalan/Basque cuisine. However, I have been made aware thatone member of the board of the FloralPark Neighborhood Association reportedto our fearless editor that she had heard“at least 10 complaints” that my columnswere about my vacations and that I shouldstay closer to home. OK, I understand.

But, there’s always a dilemma for a writer. Do I writewhat’s on my mind and how I experience the world? Or do Iwrite what I believe others want to hear? Of course, it can beboth. I must admit I’ve never had anyone complain to me aboutthe column. Quite the contrary. But, of course, no single thing inthis world is to everyone’s taste.

So, let me fulfill my promise of Barcelona and try to capit off with a local spin. And, be sure to tell me if I succeeded orfailed. I’m a big boy and can take it if the latter is the case.

* * * *

Just as a reminder, Sandy and I were off to visit withfriends in a farmhouse in the Pyrenees region of France. Ourflight was through Barcelona, a city I had heard so much aboutbut had never visited. So, Sandy and I took three or four days atthe end of the trip to experience this historic place whereColumbus arrived after his initial voyage to the New World, whereCatalans don’t consider themselves Spanish, where countlessartists and architects made their indelible imprint on modern civi-lization and where the 1992 Olympics were held.

It is a city unlike any I’ve experienced. The best wordthat comes to mind is “comfortable.” It’s not a large megapolis, not unlike other European cities built before the automobile. Iwould say that Barcelona was built for walking in a grand way. Itsbroad lush boulevards are among the most inviting I’ve everenjoyed. Intersected by diagonals, not unlike what you find inWashington, D.C., the atmosphere just begs for the grand paseosso beloved by the Spaniards.

All of these boulevards are clothed in what has to be themost amazing panoply of architecture I’ve ever seen. Every blockproduces another “wow,” it seemed to us.

Let me just begin and end with Antoni Gaudi, the pre-eminent architect of late 19th and early 20th Century Spain. It isfrom him that the word “gaudy” derives. And, to a newcomer orone peering from afar, it would seem this was a man whose imagi-nation ran wild combining about anything he might find in therubbish bin. Well, that is as far from the truth as one can get, Icame to realize. His designs, most notably the Sagrada Familia, thefamous basilica that is the iconic image of Barcelona, visuallystunning.

What I thought were more or less random gatherings ofobjects are, in fact, all derived from nature. The inside of the

basilica is, in essence, a viewthe world in the midst of aforest built of various types ofstone that seemingly soar tothe heavens. While I’m not areligious man, I must say it wasone of the most inspiring andspiritual places I’ve ever been. Those of you know Sandywould understand how itaffected her.

So, one bottom lineon Barcelona is that it is aremarkable visual experience.

Culinarily speaking,as I often do, Barcelona isequally enticing. There are fewplaces on earth that are as cutting edge as Barcelona. But, alas, wedidn’t get to experience the most avant garde places because ofpoor planning and Monday night closures. Nevertheless, second oreven third choices are superb. I’ll mention a couple of restaurantsand the abundant tapas places.

Our friend Susan Hart had recommended Los Caracoles, translating as “the snails.” She had been there several years backwith her parents. Of course, Sandy and I both had to have thesnails. These were served with a reasonably thick gravy and wereexcellent. Clearly, the place is a tradition in Barcelona since therestaurant opened in 1835. I had rape estilo chef, or the chef ’smonkfish. I have to admit that it was about the ugliest damnedthing I had ever had on my plate. But, boy was it good!! Therestaurant is located down an ancient alley of old Barcelona thatjust added to its charm. Thanks, Susan.

On our final night, having missed our attempt at one of theavant garde we “settled” for another traditional, yet splendid, din-ing experience at La Dame. We enhanced America’s reputationfor promptness by arriving as the place opened at 8 p.m. wantingto be out of the hotel early the next morning and on our way tothe airport. If you have any knowledge of Spain, this is the equiv-alent of the early bird special. We finished about 9:20 and had ourfirst accompanying diners a few minutes before that. I chose pigtrotters (what else?) also known as pig’s feet. This is a delicacy Ihad enjoyed once in Paris and was delighted to find it again. Thisis one superb dish. And, Sandy, being the kid she is, had goat. Ifyou’ve not had it, think of a meat somewhere between beef andlamb. We don’t see it too often in this part of the world. We cameaway having had a most delicious meal with all the wait staff toourselves. Outstanding.

Finally, no trip to Spain is complete without a solid exposureto tapas. As you’re undoubtedly aware tapas may be the signaturedish of Spain, although that is certainly debatable given all of theoptions available. It’s certainly the most well-known Spanish foodin America. A meal of tapas is akin to what we call grazing overhere. Lots of appetizers, in essence.

Let me highlight two places we enjoyed. Both were along the

Passeig de Gracia which I take to be the walkway of grace. And,gracious it is. The first place, CostaGallega or Galician Coast, has itsorigins in the very northwest ofSpain on the Bay of Biscayne. Wehad wonderful anchovies that arenothing like what we get in cans,deep-fried aioli-dipped potato cubes, excellent calamari and shrimp, aseafood I can take or leave, that wasdivine.

Our second experience was ata Basque street-side restaurant,Txapela (pronounced “chapella” orhat). Most of the tapas come ontoasted slices of baguette (things likesagardoa/cider sausage, melted brie, anchovies, sardines, octopus, eel, morcilla/black sausage) but some are also served à la skewer(shrimp and barbecued pork). We loved this one as well.

So, now to bring the trip full circle, you might want to knowwhere you could experience such superior cuisine. Well, as luckwould have it, one is right here in our own backyard. While I’venot been there, Sandy and Susan were doing an early Sunday nightcocktail together at Lola Gaspar’s right here in good old SantaAna. Both have raved about the food there. And, it appears fromthe current menu that there are plenty of Spanish delights avail-able. I do know that it gets highly positive reviews for its inven-tiveness and overall quality.

Another choice would be the eponymously named TapasFlavors of Spain Restaurant in Newport. Off the beaten path, it’sbeen around for a couple of decades. It’s reasonably close and hasa loyal following, obviously. Paella is abundant on the menu. Giventhe passing of Black Sheep Bistro, this might be your best choicefor a paella evening. Lunches are available too. I ate there manyyears ago and found it delightful.

If Downtown Disney is an option for you there is CatalRestaurant and Uva Bar. It features a wide array of Spanish andother Continental dishes. And, of course, tapas are available aswell. It’s part of the Patina Group that owns our own neighbor-hood Tangata, the restaurant at the Bowers. This high-end chainalways delivers on an excellent dining experience.

And, in researching for this segment, I’ve recently located adinner place in downtown Fullerton, Lizarran, that I’ve put on mymust-visit list. The menu available on the Web page is quite entic-ing. I plan to make a visit soon, particularly since I work there.

Finally, I’d be remiss in not reminding you that a bit fartherafield in Chino is Centro Basco, a Basque restaurant that openedfor business in 1940. Now, if that’s not a recommendation, I don’tknow what is. I have always been partial to the place as it was thefirst restaurant I ate in on my job interview at Cal State Fullertonin 1975. Served family style, the supper was superb.

So, let me know about my ramblings. I do get carried away. But, regardless, get out there and help this economy get going.Restaurateurs need TLC, too. Happy Holidays, all.

FPNA and MOFP JoinTogether to Honor

Firefighters at Station #1 Every year the Floral Park Neighborhood Association

(FPNA) and the Mothers of Floral Park (MOFP) combineefforts to honor the firefighters at our local station on 17thStreet. The past several years these two groups have provideddinner for each of the three firehouse shifts. Mothers, grand-parents, children and neighbors visited the fire station over thethree days and were shown wonderful hospitality by the fire-fighters. Children brought drawings and other mementos forthe firefighters to show their appreciation for their hospitalityand service to the community.

This year’s event took place on August 16, 17 and 18 inorder to accommodate all three shifts. Fortunately, the fire-fighters were not out on a call and were able to spend timetalking with the neighbors and children about the equipmentat the station and their work. The children were given somevery valuable information on what emergencies warrant calling911 and how to properly respond to an emergency in theirhomes.

The firefighters seem to genuinely enjoy the neighborlytouch that this annual event brings to them, and the childrenare thrilled to learn first-hand about the firefighters, the stationhouse, the life of a firefighter, and the amazing emergency vehicles.

The annual Firefighter Appreciation event is a fantastictradition for our neighborhood and the MOFP to show theirgratitude for this wonderful station house and its crew. We areprivileged to have such kind and enthusiastic fire station as partof our community here in Floral Park.

Thank you to Catherine Boezinger for once again head-ing up the event this year and to all the neighbors who gra-ciously contribute their time and generosity year after year.
