HEALTH AND BEAUTY

1. Instead of shaving over and over, with the hairs coming in darker and thicker each time, try waxing. Waxing to remove hair will result in softer hairs each time and result in permanent hair loss after a few sessions.

2. Drink plenty of water and get eight hours of sleep every day.

3. Good posture can make you look much slimmer.

4. Wearing less make-up makes you look younger.

5. Wearing clothes that are tight make you look heavier. Even a slim girl can bulge over too-tight jeans.

6. Sleeping on your back will prevent many wrin-kles and breakouts on your face.

Top 12 Beauty tips for 20127. Vitamins and minerals are needed for health

and beauty, but more is not always better. Too much Vitamin A or Selenium can cause hair loss.

8. Exercise while dieting is a must or your skin will be too large (and sag-gy) for your smaller body. It is much, much tougher to tighten skin after your body shrinks than as you go.

9. Wearing very high heels too often will give you a mascu-line, muscular calf instead of a feminine, rounded calf.

10. Wearing a low heel will give you better posture than wearing flat shoes.

11. After washing your face, rinse in cold water (fair-skinned people should use cool instead of cold) to close the pores and tighten the facial muscles.

12. Last but not least, smile often! It’s good for the soul, mind and spirit and most importantly it will make people wonder what your up to!

SENIOR FOCUS

Many seniors find themselves wanting to exercise more often and might even think about joining a gym but are worried that their bodies just won’t be able to take the exertion. While your body is definitely not the same as it was when you were 20, research has shown that a regular exercise program is extremely beneficial. Studies conducted have concluded that the physical decline we normally associate with aging may not have to do with aging at all, but a lack of physical activity that usually happens when people get older. But it’s not too late! Developing a safe exercise program brings you closer to a healthier, active lifestyle, which is extremely important. Here are some tips for exercising safely to optimize your results and reduce the risk of injury.

1. Know Your Limits It’s very important that you know your body. Being able to tell the difference between a good level of exercise and when you are pushing yourself too hard is absolutely crucial to your well-being. Talk to your doctor about your wish to exercise more frequently. If you know what you shouldn’t do and specific warning signs, you will be able to keep your exercising as safe as possible and know when to slow down before your body suf-fers any serious harm.

2. Strength Training – Free Weights and Resistance Bands Using free weights and resistance bands are a great, safe way to combat muscle loss that can be so prevalent with age. For some seniors, these are often a much better workout choice than using weights machines.

Safe Exercising for Seniors3. Cardio Exercise

Come up with a plan for how you will attack each cardio ses-sion. A few times a week do short, intense exercise and on alternate days do longer, less intense exercise. Machines like ellipticals and stationary bikes are ideal as they are much easier on your joints than treadmills.

4. Utilize Personal Trainers When you are first beginning to exercise, schedule a few ses-sions with a personal trainer. Make sure you share with them any important information or advice that your doctor gave you and together you can begin to de-velop a program that is safe, but effective.

Exercising is essential to staying healthy, fit, and slowing the effects of aging. Talk to a friend and join a gym as exercise buddies. Having a support system in place is key to your success! And, perhaps most important of all, remember to have fun! Any safe exercise is good exercise so don’t stop gardening, taking walks with your spouse around your neighborhood, or chasing after your grandchildren! Christmas!Merry

No matter how much society tries to change the meaning of Christmas,

lets remember the true reason why we as a nation celebrate this time of year.

Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Christ-mas is derived from the Old English word “Cristes maesse” which literally translates to Christ’s Mass. Although no one knows for sure the exact date of Christ’s birth, the date chosen to cele-brate it is related to the Roman Saturna-lia festival that lasted from the 17th-21st of December. This date was chosen somewhere during the 4th century AD by the heads of the church and the fol-lowing is how Christmas evolved.

Christmas and Gift Giving

Gift-giving, likened the activity to that of the Magi, who gave gifts to baby Jesus, in this regard it became symbolic and necessary to the grand tradition of Christmas.

Christmas and Santa Claus

The character of Santa Claus is said to be inspired by Saint Nicholas of Myra, a bishop, who went around giving the poor children of his village gifts. The legend of Santa centres around the North Pole and his magical workshop of elves. Every year he makes presents for those children who were nice. Those who were naughty received nothing but a lump of coal. The figure of Santa

has become inseparable from the tradi-tion of Christmas on a whole.

Christmas and Carols

Another important part of the Christ-mas celebrations are the singing of carols. These have their origins in the past well before the concept of Christ-mas carols was actualized. Most of the popular carols we now sing were writ-ten in the 19th century and were sung from house to house near the Christmas season. Soon the church adopted this tradition in the 1820’s, giving these songs a greater sense of reverence.
