Dear Members

All too soon Christmas is upon us again! It is a time of mixed emotions. A little excited and look-ing forward to the festivities yet sensing some panic as the days fly by and before we know it—its here! The shopping, cleaning, decorating, cooking will all soon be behind us and so will the day we’ve all been waiting for and another year will begin in the wink of an eye. Now that I have added ‘depression’ to your Christmas List, on a brighter note I would like to take this opportunity of wishing all of you good people a very Happy

My dear husband, have you fixed the crib and the Christmas tree lights? Good! Now go quickly and take a bath. When everyone’s ready we’ll take a bus to attend mass at the Bunga Raya Church. Philomena and Manuel, both of you will definitely have seats in the Choir loft. We will have to stand outside the church if we ar-rive late. Just observe, even if we are before the ‘upper tens’ they will have seats in church and we will not. They give a stipend to the priest each month to reserve their pews. That’s it! Those people are rich and they can afford it. It does not matter. Let us go early to church. If we are lucky we will get a place. Otherwise we could follow the Midnight Mass outside, in the church compound. After Mass we should wish the priests, both Father Pintado and Father John ‘tall’. Don’t forget, today is Christmas, so, when we greet them we should also kiss their hands and all the elders. Following are some traditional Kristang food served at Christmas – Curry Feng, Curry Devil (kari diabu), Ladeh and Curry Seku Semor, Sebak, Egg salad and vegetables, Pie, achar, Bolu Koku, Dodol, Agar agar, pineapple tarts, pang susees, sugee cake, fruit cake, butter cake, and the list goes on.... Bong Natal everybody!

NOMINATIONS The Management Committee are currently requesting nominations for the above position. Nomination forms and enquiries regarding the President’s position can be obtained from the Secretary Mr Frank Hedges on telephone number 9389 7105 or at email address [email protected]. Elections will take place at the Association’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday April 1st 2012

A note from our current President Genevieve De Souza

Unfortunately due to personal reasons I am unable to continue as President of the Association at the completion of my 2 year term in April 2012. It is imperative that I find a successor by the beginning of March so that an effective hand over can occur. If you think you have the credentials and desire to take on this position, please give it some serious thought. For me personally, it has been a rewarding and challenging experience. I have learnt much about my heritage and now have a better understanding and appreciation of what it is to be Eurasian. I have found missing links in my mother’s family and made good friends in the process. I visited Malacca last year for the first time and it was truly a ‘Mecca’ moment climbing to the top of St Paul’s hill and the unforgettable visit to graves of my ancestors at Bukit Serindit cemetery and my Mum’s ancestral home in Tranquerah. I am now a user of the Serani Sembang and Boudeville website (Dad’s family) and have only a week ago discovered that there is a town called ‘Boudeville’ in Normandy, France, a must when I next visit Europe. The highlight of my time as President was when I was given the privilege of meeting the mother of my dearest friend after 40 years. The last time we met was at her funeral, when at the tender age of 15, an accident cruelly ended a beautiful life. This emotional meeting took place at one of our Sunday lunches. It is so heartening to know that there is a great desire amongst the Eurasian community to ensure that this unique culture and tradition is not lost for future generations in Western Australia. For what I have given, I have received two fold. The support and encouragement from everyone in the Association has been tremendous and I hope that in some small way I have assisted the Association in its journey forward. Thank you for giving this request your kind consideration.
