In This Issue

Last year, our CSU Student Chapter took part in the AssociatedSchools of Construction Student Competition in Sparks, Nevada. At that competition, they were given a project, got only one day to

work on it, and then presented it to a prospective owner. They placed second lastyear, and we are very proud of them.

Last year’s president, Peter Martinez told me that our assistance helped them achievethat award by doing what we repeated last month.

At last month’s dinner, we invited the current members of the Student Chapter to comein and give us a preview of their presentation so that we may be able to assist themagain. They brought a team in to represent a Principal, Chief Estimator, ProjectManager, Safety Manager, Superintendent, and Project Engineer.

They presented on an office media building, taking turns to address different aspects:Square foot prices; site logistics; safety issues; value engineering; etc.

The Methodology for Estimating the Quantities and Costs of the Structural SteelComponents of a Simple Framed StructureF

EATURE

ARTICLE

More sketches on page 3...

by Gary W. Beatty, CPE*PART 3

2. The 2nd Floor Framing Plan. (See the attached 11" x 17" sheet labeled 2ND-01.)

a) Continuing with the columns, in order to complete the quantity take-off for them, theconditions existing at the top of the columns can be identified, to quantify cap plates, fasteners and beam web stiffener plates. Notice in this case there are two different types ofcap plates, a connection type and a static type. (Reference: - Section Drawings 1/SK-3, 1/SK-4 and 1/SK-5.)

Notes: -1. It is my personal preference to install the beam web stiffeners into the beamswith the quantity take-off for the columns. This ensures that, if there are no beamconnections at this type of connection, the beam web stiffeners are not accidentallyexcluded from the quantity take-off.

2. Once again refer to the structural steel specification source to hand to determine thelength / width and welding length required for the beam web stiffener plates.

See the following sketches and finally the take-off sheet, which will complete the take-offfor the columns for the project.

Part 4 will continue with the take-off for the beams, next time.

We had an enjoyable time throwingcurveballs and trick questions. We hadsome lively discussions and poked a littlefun.

More importantly, we gave them pointersand frank comments. I want to thank RalphKasper from Adolfson & Peterson, ChrisMorton from Howell, and Chris Hulse fromPCL for playing the part of the owners.I also want to thank all who attended andhelped out with their sage advice.

Most importantly, I would like to thank theCSU Students for being good sports. Goodluck in this years’ competition!
