Unley Open Carnival
Saturday 13th November
Despite some rather disappointing weather on the day, this year’s Carnival was an outstanding success. With 240 athletes competing in over 1200 individual races, we saw some of the states best up and coming swimmers battle it out. This was evident in the final of the Male “Dash for Cash” where Marion’s Sam Wearing-Smith touched out Tim McNamara from PBA by a finger tip to take the $100 1st prize. Unley swimmers looked resplendent in their club uniform and rightly showed the opposition how proud they are to call the best outdoor pool in the state their home. Although a small club, the spirit shown by all our members both swimmers and parents on the day was fantastic and we saw our biggest turn out of helpers for some time.
Outstanding performances on the day came from Madeleine Larkin (Bronze medal 12-13 100m Backstroke) Annabel Lampard (Bronze medal 14-15 100m Butterfly) Claire Wilkinson (Silver medal Open 200m Breaststroke) & Jackson Pike (Gold medal 10-11 50m Backstroke) A special thanks to our visiting Technical
Officials who assisted on the day. With only 4 qualified technical officials registered with Unley, this meet would not have been possible without these generous people who gave up their time to help Unley.
As a club, we really need to increase our number of registered Technical Officials so we can run an event such as this with minimal outside assistance. As mentioned in the last edition of the Bluefins Bulletin, we will be hosting a Technical Official workshop in the new year and would like to as many parents there as possible. Thankyou to all the parents who volunteered on the day, the numerous people who helped out on the gate, setting up, packing up, the BBQ, the cake stall and the lucky envelope stall which was once again an outstanding success selling out in under an hour.
Thanks also go to Sue Howlett & Ros Leane - Club Life Members who always answer the call for help and come along on the day. Lastly a special thanks to the committee of the Unley swimming
Club. These special people put their hand up at the AGM and committed their time to assist with the running of the club making events such as these possible. On the day, they were the first ones there and the last ones to leave making my job as Carnival Director much easier – thankyou Tania Carlino Carnival Director.
2010 Open Water State Championships
Saturday 27th November
This year’s Open Water State Championships saw Unley enter the largest contingent of any club with 23 swimmers entered proving Craig is the foremost Open Water coach in this state. With his encouragement, many swimmers tackled the Open Water event for the first time and it was great to see them compete in the 2.5km swim, which was introduced to the program for the first time this year. Also held on the day under difficult and rough conditions, was the 10km event for the diehard & more experienced Open Water competitors. Unley achieved outstanding results finishing 2nd (53 points) behind a combined Queensland team (56 points) and way ahead of our nearest SA rivals South Coast (28 points) and Henley & Grange (25 points)
Unfortunately, conditions worsened on Sunday resulting in the 5km event being cancelled which meant many of our swimmers were unable to compete. Congratulations to all swimmers who
competed and achieved outstanding results.

Becoming an Official
You arrive at the pool ready to watch your child compete and as the meet begins, you notice all these people dressed in navy and white patrolling the pool deck. Ever wonder who they are? Well they’re our Technical Officials who volunteer their time in order to make the meet possible. Many of them have been officiating for many years and even though their children have long left the sport, they still enjoy the friendship and camaraderie their involvement in the sport offers them. On the 24th October, Swimming SA introduced mandating of officials. What does this mean to you? It means that Unley will now be required to provide not only time keepers but technical officials. For your reference, please find a condensed copy of the policy below:
POLICY MANDATED OFFICALS The purpose of this policy is to ensure adequate officials are present on pool deck.
THE POLICY
Each club will be required to provide an allocated number of officials depending upon the number of athletes entered from their club. People who are nominated by their Club as pool deck officials should undertake the Online General Principals Officiating Course https://learning.ausport.gov.au/jPortal/default.aspx
The formula used to determine the number required by Clubs shall be as follows. Total Club Athletes divided by the Total Athletes entered, multiplied by the number of officials required then rounded to the nearest whole person. (0.4 or < = 0 and 0.5 or > = 1)
e.g. If a Club enters 26 swimmers and the total number of athletes entered by all Clubs is 250, and we require 39 pool deck officials, the maths would be. ((26/250)x36~)=4 Pool deck officials
PENALTIES FOR NON COMPLIANCE SwimmingSA believes that all Clubs will intend to comply with this policy, however, it is evident through past experiences that some Clubs may not comply. As such, the Board have implemented a penalty system to entice Clubs to actively fulfil their responsibilities.
1st Offence Clubs will be counselled regarding the breach and no points
be attributed to the club for that meet
2nd Offence A $100 fine and no points to be attributed to the Club for that meet
3rd Offence A $200 fine and no points to be attributed to the Club for that meet
4th + Offence A $300 fine and no points attributed to the Club for that meet & exclusion from the next State championship meet.
As with most sports, the sport of swimming relies heavily on the
involvement and support of parents. As a club, we must be seen to
be proactive in embracing these new requirements and it is no
longer acceptable for parents to just drop their child at a meet and
return when it is finished. When entering your child to compete at a
meet, you will be reminded of your obligation and it will be up to
you to find a suitable replacement should you be unavailable to
attend. As mentioned in the policy, the number of officials is
calculated on the number of swimmers we enter however with this
in mind, you will not be required to officiate at every meet – a roster
system will apply to make it fair for everyone.
Technical officials have the opportunity of officiating at many
different meets including Open Water, National and even
International meets. The announcer at the 2000 Sydney, 2004
Athens & 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth
Games, Peter Graham, started his officiating right here in Adelaide
and his accreditations have taken him all over the world.
So what now? In the next 4 – 6 weeks we will be hosting a general
principles course in the Unley clubrooms. Shortly, you will be
advised of the exact date and time and instructions on how to
register so keep a look out.
Once you have undertaken the course, the next step is to decide which accreditation you wish to complete. These include: Announcer Inspector of Turn Check Starter Recorder - to name a few These can be done on line and once you have completed the work book, it will need to be returned to SwimmingSA for marking. A few meets on pool deck and a quick on the job assessment and you will be on your way to a becoming a fully fledged Technical Official.
